There are topics about your greatest finds but I want to hear about your worst ones. It could be something you overpaid for or maybe something you were really excited about until you realized it was the wrong one.
One for me was buying a Gamecube sports game. I had heard that one was rare so I took a gamble and hoped for the best but it turned out to be just a sports game.

for me its dark fall 2 lights out there is a lot to like but UI is shit and i have only played about 3 or 5 minutes of it and it big waste of 8 dollars

My worst pick ups that I can think off is buying a game system then finding out it that it doesn't work.
My first Fairchild Channel F i paid $40 for then got it, hooked it up and it played for five minutes then died.
Another time I bought an Atari Super Pong and seller claimed it worked and was in perfect shape.
When I got it I felt how heavy it was and opened the Battery Compartment and found that there was still batteries in it from the 70's or 80's and where corroded so bad they where practically dust. The corrosion was beyond repair and it spread to the inside the system. I tried using an adapter and it was dead. I payed $20+$15 shipping for this and i was mad, so i contacted seller and was told to ship it back for my $20 refund, I told him only if you refund all shipping i'm not paying another $10-15 (total $25-30) to ship back and get $20 back. he refused and he got bad feedback. lol

Umm...it's pretty blurry...but, I *think* that her name was Trina :-[

I've never seen a Channel F that didn't do that. It seems to be such a common problem that I doubt I'll ever get one.
The worst game I ever bought was my copy of Super Widget. The traces on the PCB were so corroded I had to do this to make the game work:

It wasn't so bad, though, since technically I got this game for free.

I bought an Atari Jaguar and a PS3... yep...
-
In a new game store(at the time) I got a "deal" on Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and what I thought was Super Double Dragon. Turns out I forgot there was another Double Dragon game on SNES, and that's what I got, Double Dragon V, and it's a pretty bad fighting game rather than a fun beat 'em up.

Ha yup. My PS3 is basically an upgraded PS2 with bluray and Netflix capabilities and wireless controllers.
I bought a copy of .hack//Mutation at GameStop once, thinking I needed it. But got home and realized I did already own it. So I took it back, the clerk wanted to give me shit about it too but I wasn't having it.
Once I bought some Saturn sports game on eBay, thinking it was $1 and didn't notice something like $12 shipping on it from Canada... I had been drinking that night... :(

Lol I have one of these. It was a late night after my shift at a warehouse (we got off work at 4am) and we all got drunk and I woke up next to someone. Well, a few months later, my mom invited me to the local bar that she goes to so that I could meet one of the waitresses there she thought I would like. Turned out to be the same girl. I left before she saw me. :P

I made an ebay and when it arrived there was a spider's nest in it, thankfully they were all dead already.
I have also bought a 7800 and Famicom and I haven't been able to get either to work.
-
Back in the early 2000s and eBay was the wild, wild west, I bought some old POS laptop thinking I could fix it up and get it to run Duke Nukem and Quake. Stupid thing had a black and white screen, no hard drive, and needed a proprietary power supply I could never find. I would up throwing it away a few years ago, fucking piece of junk.

Heh my other worst pickup : http://vpizza.org/~jmeehan/photo/data/00-vehicles/dodge-ram/640/IMG_0139.JPG
The cooling unit in it was broke so I had to keep 5 2L bottles behind the seat full of water. Everytime I drove somewhere, it would overheat and all the water would boil out so I would have to be somewhere for hours waiting for the motor to cool down long enough to fill it back up.

My bad luck has been with the Gamcube game Battalion Wars. I always used to rent it and I really like it, So finally one of the game store by my house had a complete copy for $7 I picked it up tried playing it and it didnt work on either of my gamecubes and wii, I took it back and they swapped out the disc, still didnt work. I ended up getting a full refund but damn.. I know it's a really cheap game but Im still hoping to find it in the wild but that hasnt happend yet

Blah not a single comment on either of my posts ... you guys are too focused!

So far I haven't played a single game on my genesis. I bought it, plugged it in and it just sits there <.<

I have a cart of Ninja Gaiden 3: The Ancient Ship of Doom that has a badly damaged label, and a board that was swapped with Goonies 2. Luckily, it was on eBay, so, I got my money back, but Jeeeez.

How does Godzilla fit in the passenger seat?
Also, hello there stranger!

Hey aren't you from Atariage?

This one is easy. I was at a pawn shop in the area and I spotted a CIB Stellar-Fire for the Sega CD. It had an old price tag on it of $15 dollars, that I thought was just there not marked by the owner. Since nothing else was marked. So I grabbed it and 2 Xbox games Def Jam: Fight for N.Y. and Mechassault.
Dropped them in my wife's lap and asked her to pay for them while I ran to the bathroom. When it was all said and done it was $35. The Xbox games were $10 a piece, which Def Jam didn't work. Of course that meant Stellar-Fire WAS in fact $15. I was so damn mad I could spit. It was my fault though I didn't think to ask and mother nature was being quite demanding. The only game that was reasonable was a coaster. I don't set foot in there anymore.

I bought a copy of Stinger for NES and about 6 years later it started leaking a brown, oozing fluid. It wasn't electrolyte, the circuit board was clean. This stuff was trailing all around the inside of the cartridge.
I'm thinking it was some kind of Venom-esque, interstellar, parasitic life-form.
-
That's mold. We've discussed that before.
-
What comes to mind is the Genesis/NES clone system I bought from Goodwill for $10 about six months ago. I brought it home and the thing was just dead. You're often taking a chance when you buy from Goodwill.

Sounds yummy! Did you lick it to get super powers?

*Dumb question alert*
How does a cart grow mold? Especially if taken care of. I have never seen this and am very curious. ???

Someone probably dropped it in something or spilled something on it at some point.

My bread grows mold all the time and I take care of it!

Someone probably dropped it in something or spilled something on it at some point.
Or it might've come from a very humid place. Or, maybe it was for sale at an outside flea market for a long time. Maybe it was thrown in with other things that are moldy, that thing spreads fast.
I've seen a lot of moldy games in my time but I didn't know it was mold until recently. I just thought it was dirt or soda.
-
I've got another dumb question. How hard is it to get rid of? I've never had a problem out of it spreading after I've cleaned my games. I just clean the outside of each cart before I put it with the others.

that would explain the weird brown stuff on my copy of NHL 94

Those reasons make sense, I'll keep my eyes open in the future, and be mindful of it.

It might have spread to the inside. I dunno how to get rid of it once it's done that.

My worst pickup in recent memory would have to be StarCraft II on release day. I played it for about a week. The campaign is boring. Multiplayer is boring. The game is far more enjoyable to spectate than to actually play.

I didn't know there was one on the PSX, I'll have to look into this.

Did anybody see the new movie? I thought it was pretty good! I'm saving up for the Ultimate Three Stooges collection right now...
-
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City was a disappointment for me. I really loved the Resident Evil series growing up. My favorite was Resident Evil 2 for PS1. I hadn't played RE for years and decided to pick up Operation Raccoon City for my PS3. It wasn't what I was expecting--I ended up playing for a couple hours than returning it. I guess I just miss the old RE; wandering around an abandoned mansion with creatures and zombies lurking around every corner, solving puzzles, etc.

It's garbage, it's a port of the GBA version. The NES version is superior in EVERY way. Just get that one.

Through reading this topic I noticed that I have the biggest losses of you! I am a Libra (well, happy birthday to me tomorrow!) so I get excited easily and often do things without deeper thinking or on a whim. :-[ Here are the bigger ones I can think of currently.
Recently I've paid 50 $ for Maximo because I was dying to play it and I thought it's the only piece in Czech based on the fact the site was advertising it as an uber rare game and through my finds I have not seen it anywhere else. Then I was so surprised when I found another shop selling it for like 13 $ .
Luckily for PS2 I've found the right sources finally so hopefully a loss like this won't happen again.
For PC it's at the moment every game which I did not manage to play but the worst is probably Battleforge. I pre-ordered this one for 50 euros in hope to play it's beta but in fact I have never played the game and soon after release it became completely free to play.
Another but even bigger waste of money for me was buying the Vita.
Well I have to be more careful with my future purchases!

Mine was the Coleco Vision Expansion Modual #3 (the Adam) I thought I was getting the stand alone one but I ended up with the one that you needed to hook up with the Coleco to run the system. This would be totally fine if I had a working Coleco at the time and since the reason why I got it was to play Coleco games I was very sad. >_> That was two years ago though so now I have a working Coleco Vision and the Modual #3 is kinda cool. It took a year and a half of neglect from me though as I kinda hated it.

More & more "October babies" surfacing up-in-here...
...FTW!!!

P.S.
@puracz:
I seem to remember you saying that you enjoy chess/chess video-games.
I don't have a Vita yet (waiting to see if the upcoming library for it sways me to or not), but, I've heard that it has "the best" chess game ever made for a handheld - may be worth checking out for you...I'm *pretty* sue that it's simply called:
Pure Chess.
Happy B-Day...mine's on the 25th!
Happy B-Day shoryuken4u, too!!!

Star wars the force unleashed 2 collector's edition- day 1
thoughts in my head at the time. I really loved the first one and I had the ultimate Sith edition with the steelbox, so I figured that I would get the collector's edition of 2 so both would be steelbook and the extra missions seemed like a good Idea. beat the story in 2 4-hour sittings. bad story, and the "missions" bored me... still have it though...
