Title: Wii U, who's getting it?
Post by: jobocan on September 14, 2012, 12:53:04 am
Yesterday was a big news day for Wii U, with the price and release date announced for the console (November 18th in the US), and a few other announcement including the mind-blowing announcement of Bayonetta 2 being a Wii U exclusive. The cool thing about that announcement is that, amongst Sony, Microsoft and Sega, Nintendo is the only company that WANTED to publish that game at all, so that makes me really love Nintendo right now :P
So who's getting the console? Here are the 2 bundles, for your information: http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu/buynow/
I was already planning on getting it, just because, but that Bayonetta announcement actually made me HYPED for it. And I see no reason to get the 300$ version when the 350$ version is a lot better for a relatively low price increase.

I may get it and convert back to Nintendo. But it won't be at launch, hopefully they don't pull a Wii and end up backordered everywhere for 2 years.

I'm in. I'm hoping to get one day 1. If not, it will be as soon as I find one.

I'm torn. I really want one, but I have three nagging things stopping me from pulling the trigger:
- Money is tight right now. Dropping $400+ (after taxes and a game) on a game console that's not much better than my 360 is a hard sell at this moment. - Power. I'm very concerned that the WiiU will not have the power it needs to get ports of AAA multi platform games on the next gen of XBox and PS hardware. - Support. Will support dry up once devs move on to the next generation? I get the nagging feeling the WiiU will die on the vine like the Dreamcast did.
That being said, I do still really want one. I've been a Nintendo fan since the 80's, rumors of the new Zelda game sound amazing and I really want to play Zombi U. It's packed with awesome and fresh ideas in the genre, my favorite being that once you die, you come back as another character and must track down your previous character who is now a zombie and kill them to get your gear back.

Then again, I bought the Wii on day 1. I bought the Gamecube on day 1. It's hard to not want to pick up the WiiU on day 1 as well. I have two months to scrape together the cash...

I'm still not sure if I will be getting one right away. I have not seen enough games yet to convince me to get one on day one.

I can't wait to get one!!! Once the price drops to about 100 and the games can be bought for around 10 dollars each. So excited!
There is nothing that I have seen that makes me want one day 1.

I don't see how they'll be able to drop the price much in the next year considering that controller costs $150+ to replace. They didn't even toss a Wii Remote in the package which they've probably got tons of laying around, especially in the unsold Wii boxes. That tells me they need to sell Wii Remotes to cover what they're losing on the Wii U (I assume they're losing money, just about everyone does when they launch a console).
Is everyone that is excited about the system simply a fan of all the Nintendo franchises? Being a Sega kid and the Wii being the first Nintendo console I acquired at launch, I don't see what's so appealing about the Wii U. Sure the controller looks interesting but I thought the same about the motion controls before the Wii was released. Does Nintendo Land look like fun or crap to you guys? Looks terrible to me. Although I also predominantly play games solo and that's clearly aimed at multiplayer. Since I own a Wii, Xbox 360, and decent PC, the only two games they've mentioned that I would like to check out are ZombiU and LEGO City Undercover. One could argue they might have one of the best launch lineups but some of their best games will already have been released on other platforms. I'm surprised they don't know the launch titles yet. Reggie said it's too early; two months is too early? The launch titles would be the ones whose developers are currently working on the first patch ::) Yeah, I'm joking but they must have some idea what will be ready and some are probably already done with development. Also, that base 8GB space seems small for patches and DLC; one RPG can have DLC that fills that fast.

I agree; that was crap about games being tied to the console itself. If someone spilled a Coke on your Wii, you were screwed if they had to do a factory reset to fix it.

If anyone planned on ordering it from Amazon.com you might want to find someplace else. There is some sort of dispute going on between Amazon and Nintendo that began last year with the 3DS. While Amazon fulfills orders through other sellers, they themselves have not been selling Nintendo hardware which is why the Wii U isn't available to pre-order on their site.

I'm still waiting for an announcement for the localization of Dragon Quest X.
This right here would also make the difference for me on when I pick up the system. I simply can not wait for this game to come stateside!
dragon quest x is an mmo and like a lot of mmos its gonna take a bit before it comes here if ever also their is a subscription fee for this game
Title: Re: Wii U, who's getting it?
Post by: soera on September 20, 2012, 06:03:39 pm
Yep. I dont mind subscription fees. I prefer to play a game like that and pay $10 a month than other stuff I end up doing for $10 or more a month. Thats the cost of 1 McDonald's meal for a month long of unlimited game play and customer support.
As far as the time difference, I would hope that it wouldnt take too long to come over or anyone other than the people who are playing now are going to be so far ahead of the curve that no one will ever catch up (depending on how the game actually works ... if its anything like Everquest, once you get behind the leaders, you never recover).

I'm getting one. I'm a Nintendo Fanboy, so I can't keep from it. I doubt I get one day 1 though. The money I had allocated for a WiiU got spent on a PlayChoice 10. Back to saving.

I'll get one eventually. The only game that interests me so far is the new Mario game, and I can't justify $400 to play one game.

...That's what happened to me with Metal Gear Solid 4. Except I totally justified it in my mind. I now have a whopping total of 4 retail games and a handful of Blu-Ray movies. Most of the time it is used as a movie/Netflix player.

I'll get one in a year or two once the price drops and there are other console colors. I seriously can't see myself paying $400 on a gimmick with not many games. I agree with Foxhack as well, Nintendo needs to pick up their shit.

Honestly, at this point, I'm not interested in it at all.
I'm gonna' sit this launch out and watch from the bleachers for awhile.
I mean, I haven't bought a Vita thanks to a lack of games that I want (and thanks to more of Sony's "proprietary" bullshit); although I absolutely love the power & potential of the system.
I haven't bought a 3DS because, well...if I got 1 at launch...I'd have been *pissed* at the big price-drop (20 free games that I don't own/can't touch be damned) ---and--- I'd have been equally pissed looking at/playing on my "Mini-3DS" once the 3DS-XL came out. What's next...the 3DS-XXL? :o
The last & only system that I bought day-one (well; since the 2600, that is) was the PS3.
Yeah, the $600 tag *was* high -but- I feel it was worth it seeing that (in addition to my working "Slim" PS3); I also still have my *working*, launch 60 Gig. (later upgraded to 500 Gigs). that will play all of my PS1, PS2, and PS3 games :)

I never heard of wal-mart doing pre-orders... Going there was my plan if I hadn't gotten a hold of a pre-order. Guess it's a good thing I pre-ordered from best buy minutes after they started :P

Well, I got a preorder. The employee found out about the preorder from me, literally minutes before the manager told her. Not the most organized bunch, but at least I got it done.

I can't bring myself to pay $465 (after tax) for the system plus the only game that interests me (NSMB).
I'm going to wait until there is at least two games I want. :D Plus, I want the system in white without being ripped off.

I'd just get the white one and add an external HD if storage is your deal. For $70, you can get 500GB right now. I'm not interested in Nintendoland or the stand, so that's the way I'd go if I was getting one on day one.
Actually, I don't really DL games anyway, so I won't really need a bigger hard drive. Heck, my 360 only has 8GB (the same as the white WiiU) and I still have several gigs free on it.
Title: Re: Wii U, who's getting it?
Post by: jobocan on October 16, 2012, 05:56:53 pm
I had no idea what its launch price was gonna' be, but, almost $500 (after tax) is certainly higher than I would have expected.
What all is included at that price?!
Well, 350$ for the deluxe version, which includes Nintendo Land, 32GB of storage, discounts on the Nintendo Network, and a bunch of stands for controllers and stuff. Plus 60$ for NSMBU... probably gets pretty close to 465$ with the tax.
On another note, Nintendo are doing some canadian tour thing for the Wii U, and for once one of these is passing through the country's capital (Ottawa) so I'll be able to try it out before it comes out, probably on November 1st.
Title: Re: Wii U, who's getting it?
Post by: zing on October 16, 2012, 06:33:03 pm
Even if you don't get the "deluxe" version, that is still $400 after tax just to play a single game.
I enjoy my Wii. I bought it two years after release thanks to Super Mario Galaxy. Looking over my collection, I see seven games I would buy again if I had to. That's approximately one game per year. I have no interest in modern games, but Nintendo's first/second-party games are still enjoyable. Maybe by this time next year, they will have their second game ready for release.

I went to a preview event (possibly the same sort of tour), and even though it was cool to see and try it in action, I'm still not completely sold on it. But hey, you should go and let us know what you think if you can!

Well let's see...I'm really tired of the LoZ formula, Mario doesn't really do it for me anymore, and there really hasn't been a Wii release that totally set my world on fire.
I'll most likely pass. The new offering from Microsoft has a much better chance of ending up in my home prior to anything new from Nintendo. I know most of us grew up with Nintendo, but the nostalgia for me ends with the N64 if we're talking about consoles. I'm tired of the gimmicks I suppose. My 3DS gets played approximately zero compared to my DS and GBA. Maybe I'm just getting too old, but Nintendo just doesn't do it for me anymore.

I had originally planned to pass on it for now, but I unexpectedly found about $350 that I wasn't expecting. Short story: payroll error at my part time job that I didn't catch for about 4 months. So now, I have the money to get one. I still don't have enough to buy a game, so I'll be playing Nintendo Land for a while.

I wouldn't say never, but I think the days of me buying consoles on launch day is past. I've got more than enough right here already and it's not as if the Wii U is going to be difficult to find in a few years time so I'm happy to wait until there are a few games I actually want to play first.
Title: Re: Wii U, who's getting it?

I'll probably wait a year or two before I pick up a Wii U, until more must-own games are out on the system like Bayonetta 2, the next Zelda and Metroid. I'm also reluctant since it's not drastically more powerful than the 360/PS3 and I'd hate to miss out on next-gen Bioshock and Fallout if they don't get ported to WiiU, since I"ll probably only pick up one system in the next generation.

I personally have zero interest in the Wii U. I highly dislike the Wii anyway (even though I have one... ::) ), and have very few games for it.
I am a little upset Bayonetta 2 was announced for Wii U, but no other platform.

I frankly don't get why anyone would be upset at that... It was either getting announced on the Wii U, or not getting made at all. Fans of the original should just be happy the sequel is coming out at all, since Sega originally cancelled it and both Sony and MS didn't want to publish it... I'm surprised Nintendo picked it up, but I'm really happy they did since I loved the original.

I won't be getting one. I never buy modern day consoles to begin with. It seems like it could be a new dreamcast to me. Not that it's going to ruin Nintendo, but the thing is being released early in the 8th generation of gaming. Meaning that the "Xbox720" and the "PS4" will have more time to make better systems. I think that it could be a flop, but again, this WILL NOT destroy Nintendo as some think. It takes a lot to bring down a company. It doesn't just happen with one console (if the company has established itself in the gaming market and made a profit before.) it also it pretty highly priced, but then again, remember the PS3's launch price? ;D > |$499 or $599|

Hmm... not exactly, since making better systems would involve using more expensive components and overall more expensive consoles, which would be a huge risk right now, especially for Sony who's bleeding money (if they're not careful they'll disappear before the 8th generation's halfway point). At this point I don't think either of their new consoles will be a HUGE leap from what they are now. Probably technically stronger than the Wii U, but not as much as what most people are expecting.
... maybe :P

That's kinda what I've been hearing too. With the WiiU hitting at the $300 price point, the most the other guys would want to sell at would be $399. $500 for a new console in this economy will put it strictly into the realm where only the rich and carefree or the most hardcore will pick it up. I'm perfectly happy with current-gen level graphics and feel no rush to drop half a grand to get marginally better looking games.

So I just came back from trying the Wii U! I played The Wonderful 101, Mario and one Nintendo Land minigame.
The first thing to mention is the controller... It's actually very comfortable and surprisingly light. It fits in your hands perfectly and you can press all the buttons easily, with the touch screen being easy to access by letting go of the controller with your right hand. I did have minor issues at first, specifically with the face buttons being under the right analog stick (and their overall positioning being a bit weird, at first I kept pressing B or Y when I wanted to press A), but after playing it a bit I did realize that I'll get used to it pretty fast. Otherwise? No problem, this controller is really good. I also got to hold the Pro controller and it was nice as well. Just a quick note on the console itself... It's basically a really long Wii. Other than it being almost the length of 2 Wiis (from what I could see, I couldn't touch it or anything), there's not much to say about it.
As for the games... The Wonderful 101 was really fun, it's basically an action game (kinda like DMC or Bayonetta) but from a really far-away perspective and a fixed camera angle. I didn't have time to figure out combos, but it was really solid and makes pretty fun use of the screen. Definitely getting this game as soon as it comes out... The funny part though is that the guy who was handling that particular "booth" (while I was playing, it was someone else right before) didn't actually know how to play the game or what the controls were, so I told him how the game was played as I was playing... Oh and the guy before him was calling the game "Powerful 100" for some reason... "Interesting" note, this was the E3 demo, as it still had the "Project P-100" title.
Mario... was Mario. There's really not much else to say, it does look pretty fun overall, but it doesn't seem to do much different from the other "New Super Mario Bros" games. The flying squirrel suit was fun to use.
Nintendo Land... My friends were playing the Luigi's Mansion minigame while I was playing Wonderful 101, and they told me afterwards that it was really fun. The minigame I played with my friends was the Zelda one, and it was BORING. But I'm still excited to see what the rest of the minigames will be like.
... Yeah, that's about all I have to say here. Oh, I got a Wii U shirt since I forced a friend to come with me :P

i finally got to try it this weekend and Rayman was the only playable demo, so I messed around with that for a while. The level I played was a blast, combining running platforming with a rhythm game set to a really great cover of Black Betty. It was really fun.
The gamepad felt great in my hands; all of the buttons were easily accessible, the screen was sharp and responsive and it felt light, but solid and well-built.
I'll be picking one up eventually, probably in the next year or so after more must-have games are released for it and we have a better feel for the system's longevity.

My Mom called today to ask, "Do you think your brother would like to have a WiiU? They have one here at Target." Of course, I said he would; but all I was thinking "I know someone who would love one of those."

I've been reading some complaints about freezing issues and potentially bricking the WiiU during the 5GB update that's already out.

This is the reason I never buy first release systems. RROD, YLOD, etc ... just always something wrong when most systems are released.
It's not a problem with the system actually, it's a problem with the users turning the system off while it's updating.
Oh, and the update is 1.5GB, not 5 :p
Even still. I really am skeptical of first release systems. The bugs are almost never truely worked out til the system is in the hands of consumers. Eventually something is found out and they remake the system better. Usually with a price drop too. Win-win for me. Plus paired with the fact that there really isnt a single game out yet that appeals to me on it, I dont mind waiting.

Weren't you just preaching how you never buy launch day consoles?? See above....and above above.

I finally played a Wii U yesterday, but all I tried were a few Nintendo Land mini-games and they all bored me :P I'm sure some must be fun and I very well could have played the worst ones (Yoshi's Fruit Kart, a ninja star throwing game, Octopus Dance, and Captain Falcon's racing game). The controller is larger than I anticipated, the screen is nice and big. Of course Nintendo Land doesn't look all that different than the Wii, I just didn't have time to look at the big budget games yet.

Nintendo systems are usually pretty reliable; even the first batch. I bought the Wii, Gamecube and DSi all on day 1 and none of them ever gave me the slightest problem. On the flipside, I got a 360 in 2008 that was dead within two years.

I concur!
Alot of NES pin connectors are still intact and functioning half decent. Whose ever really had an issue with a SNES anyways? N64s could be thrown from balconies. GameCubes had stupid little discs, but Ive never heard any issues asides from the power supply (which can happen to any ps) Wii's Ive also never heard any issues with unless you smash it around or put your disc in backwards.
Im excited for Wii U, but Id rather get a larger hard drive size when a newer model comes out and it's price drops.

I wouldn't expect a price drop on the Wii U any time soon unless Nintendo is in big trouble. They're taking a loss on systems, which they've never done before, so with margins that narrow I'd be surprised if we see a price drop on it in the next two years or before the next PS/XBox are released.
Personally, I don't need a large HD since I rarely download games. But if it were up to me I'd buy the $300 model and add an external HD; you can get a 500GB external from TigerDirect for $60, so for an extra $10 you can get over ten times as much storage. The $349 model comes with only comes with a 32GB HD.

I agree with everything except the NES. I have to wiggle games around sometimes to get them to work. Some do it some don't, but most have the problem

Our house full of gamers have been enjoying the Mario U game quite a bit actually. We have a lot of fun torturing eachother with the Wii U tablet while others are playing the game. (i.e. placing a "helper block" right above a cannon pipe, causing the person to hit the block and fall to their death)

Bought it and uite love it, only some small issues that will certainly be fixed in the future anyway :)
loading screens between applications are a bit to long and downloading an update takes to long :p

Yep exactly, super easy $10 fix. Nothing like Sony and Microsoft consoles haha

So I finally got a chance to set up and play my wii u last night. The first thing I did was video chat with my buddy for about an hour. ....could not be any simpler or clearer. Absolutely awesome. Then I hopped over and played some Nintendo Land. Seems like some fun little games to show off what the system is all about. So far I love it and I'm just really blown away by the controller. Will update more once I've played for an extended period.

I went to visit my Mom and sister last weekend and was able to find a Wii U at the Walmart my sister works at, so I got her employee discount. I set it up yesterday and played around with it today before work. My only problem is that I'm using it on a SD TV, not HD and there is a lot of overscaling on my TV. I hadn't seen this mentioned before, but it's an issue.

Went to Walmart to pick up some Nyquil for the wife last night. Saw probably 10 white systems and another 4-5 black systems. All the "wont see it on the shelf til the middle of next year" hype was blown way out of proportion around here.

One good thing about Wii U I noticed today, there's no achievement/trophy. I know some people really enjoy this, but some just try to get their gamerscore/psn lvl high and think it's the reason they play games.
I mean we were already trying to finish our games 100% few years ago when there was no trophies, i just think it's pointless. Just my 2cents.

I got my Wii U a couple nights ago :D I've been having a blast playing New Super Mario Bros. U and Scribblenauts Unlimited! I wanted to get ZombieU but I didn't have enough for it at the moment. These two games will last me quite awhile until some of the others start dropping in price. Overall, I'm impressed and it's alot of fun. The battery life of the gamepad is somewhat short, but whatever, it charges really fast anyways.

Im still waiting for one of three things : DQX or an old style version of Metroid or Zelda.
Dont see me getting the system without one of those three.

I don't have a WiiU, but really only because I restricted myself to a certain type of system to keep the personal collection focused.
I LOVE the original wii. Sin and Punishment 2 is one of my favorite games this generation. And the most recent Wii U title announcements are very exciting. Personally, I really like Nintendo and the direction they take.

I don't think I mentioned it on this thread, but my parents got one for both my brother and me. It's awesome. I'm 31 and he's 25 and our folks still get us a new Nintendo for Christmas. It's like I'm a kid all over again.
Anyway, I love it. SMB U has monopolized my (and my son's) game time. He wants to "Play the Mario Wii game" every afternoon. In fact, it's been a while since my Xbox has been on. I'm BIG on this console right now. If they keep adding games, I might not catch up on my Xbox backlog.

Haha! That's awesome about you and your son. I assume you have from your avatar... but have you seen the final Nester comic at the back of the last Nintendo Power? Your post reminded me of it.
