I read this in the Guinness Book of Video Game Records 2008 and thought that sounded crazy. Yesterday, I stumbled across a copy of the game, CIB and naturally snatched it up. I'm curious if this is true or not and I'm wondering if anyone here has ever heard anything about this? I've sent Activision an email, but who knows if they'll be able to verify it if I even hear back from them.
It seems too good to be true. According to rarityguide, it's not listed anywhere near a rare game. I don't see it on any rare game lists. There's quite a few copies on eBay. Prices for it are really low too, so if it were really this rare I'd think it would be selling for crazy prices online.

I've never heard that before. I've seen the game a bunch out in the wild, but I've been waiting to pick up a CIB copy. I hope it is rare, but I don't think it is.

If it is rare then this guy is extremely lucky :

My guess is that this was misrepresented in the Guinness Book. 396 copies sounds unbelievably low, unless production began on it and they stopped production right after it started.
Regardless, it is cool knowing it was the last game released on the N64.
-
I HIGHLY doubt that only 300+ cartridges of THPS 3 were released on the N64. The way that series multiplied I'd say that's a typo of some kind.
-
I wouldn't think it's a typo, since it was featured in a list specifically because of the low number. More than likely, the writer got some bad info or perhaps a typo in their source.
15 people on VGCollect alone have a copy, so that has to be wrong. Too bad, I thought I stumbled across an extremely rare game.

Probably very false.

Such an incredibly rare game wouldn't cost 10-20$ on ebay :P

It is false. Very, very false. I laughed so hard when I read this back in the day.
Seriously, Guinness?

I thought it sounded plausible considering it was the last game released on the N64 and I'd never seen a copy of it anywhere. Not that I was going out of my way looking for it.

They actually printed that? Wow. D:
-
Yep, this is very silly. Maybe 30,000... but no way is it 396.
-
Do any companies even talk about release numbers? I always thought that they were closely guarded secrets.
-
It's impossible considering how popular THPS 1 and 2 were.
Hell, even Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer sold more than 396 copies...

Probably very false.
