Title: Video Games/Series you like, but almost no one else does
Post by: pacpix on September 26, 2012, 11:00:09 pm
This topic idea popped in my head when I saw Turf picked up Super Hydlide for Sega Genesis.  For some reason I enjoy Hydlide on the NES.  I bought it expecting a crappy game and ended up playing it all day to completion .  I even replayed it over the summer just for fun.  I also bought the Japanese sequel, but have not had time to really play it yet.

How about you guys?

What a strange coincidence!  I just watched this yesterday!

SPOILER ALERT:  He didn't care for Hydlide.

I have a few low reviewed games that I like, but probably the first one that comes to my mind is Alone in the Dark (Xbox 360)/Inferno (PS3).  For some reason I really enjoyed the game.  I even played the PS2 version to completion.

When I play a game that I enjoy, but that reviewers didn't, I feel like I'm pulling for the underdog.

The PS3 cross-over RPG Cross Edge, is an *EXTREMELY* divisive & polarizing game...w/ the majority of players landing in the "hate" it side of this "Love/Hate" game.

Thing is, almost all of the complaints & flaws pointed-out by the "haters" - are accurate & valid.

- It has a horrible inventory/synthesizing system.

- The manual (and, even the strategy-guide) both come up waaaay short & fail miserably.

- In game tutorials aren't great...and...the "Help" screens would pretty much only make sense & be understandable to those who already know how everything works.

- A good amount of the story & dialogue is cheesy (but, I'll forgive it that one as it's to be expected from a game that mashes together characters from Disgaea, Ar tonelico, Mana Khemia 2, Atelier Marie, Spectral/Blazing Souls, Darkstalkers, etc --and-- it's a "NISA" game).

- *Nothing* makes sense (ex. once you open a menu, pressing "X" on a menu option may (and does) do something entirely different than pressing the Triangle button on the same option).

- It's brutally difficult & unforgiving, and, finally,

- There's never been a "Guide-Dang-It" game like this one.  You will never "luck into" or figure-out on your own how to get the "True End" because you must know when (which battles) you have to do such illogical, un-intuitive, and non-sensical things, such as, being locked-out of the True End for hitting/damaging the Boss that you're fighting.

In spite of all of this (or perhaps, because of it) I (and some others) absolutely *LOVE* the game!!!

(*only* after figuring-out & understanding how all of this game's complex bullshit actually works & functions).

Some other games that I had a lot of fun with were:

Radiata Stories,
Shadow Hearts: From the New World, and
FF X-2.

I'm not sure if these really count as series that not many people like, but I have two that come to mind.

1. Lego -----.  Most "gamers" don't care much for these, since they are widely considered to be kids games, but I have gotten 100% on most of them.  I know the formula doesn't change much from game to game, and they are fairly simplistic in nature, but I've enjoyed them all.  As long as they keep making them, I'll keep buying them.  Really looking forward to Lord of the Rings!

2. Guitar Hero.  The fad seems to have ended now, but I still play Guitar Hero with my family.  I think my enjoyment comes not from the games themselves, but from playing with the wife and kids.

I don't care much for the Lego games, they tend to bore me, but I wholeheartedly agree with Guitar Hero (and Rock Band).  I never really get sick of something that I enjoy, so like you said If they keep making them, or start making them again, I'll keep buying them!

Aww Yeah! Art of fighting! love those games, need to get them on the AES soon though haha.
Some of the Lego games especially the Star Wars ones.
I enjoyed Metroid other M as well but the series is pretty well liked so Im not sure if that really counts.
I enjoy SNK fighting games more than Capcom fighting games especially the newer ones, Fatal Fury,Samurai Shodown,The King of Fighters all great

I think a lot of people like Pokémon, including me, so I don't think that works. I'd say racing games, I don't know a lot of people who like racing games, and I think they're alright. Specifically I'd say Gran Turismo or Need for Speed. To answer the question in reverse, I'd say RPGs. Everyone likes those, except for me (except for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga!)

lego games are not kids games and anyone who says that has not played lego racers on n64 or ps1 and i dare them to played it and see how long takes them to give up in frustration

I was meaning the games like Lego Batman, Lego Star Wars, etc.  I've never tried the racing game.  Maybe I'll pick it up if I can find a copy locally.

None of my friends have the urge to catch 'em all like I do. It's so bad, I'm thinking about not getting White 2 and Black 2... I've even offered to buy copies for my friends so I'd have someone to play with. It never works.

Battle Arena Toshinden

I remember that vast amount of money we spent buying our first Playstation with Ridge Racer and Toshinden, I still have a soft spot for both of those games :)

The one series that comes to mind for me is Sega's Sangokushi Taisen - there have been two ace DS games and the arcade version's going strong (three main releases + updates + a Sengoku Taisen spinoff). That's the one series that I'd really like people to play.

Here are the most 3 neglected strategy games which come to my mind:

1.) Chess
(http://i.ytimg.com/vi/hqKDaIVWEEs/0.jpg)
The king of the turn-based strategy games. I don't know anyone who would be much into games playing chess. People who play chess do mostly play just chess and nothing else. However I play chess for more than 13 years already. Never gets boring.

2.) Axis & Allies
(http://www.toopix.eu/userfiles/e87e53e10357f48e41ee14fa5ebdcc2f.jpg)
This was an awesome game! I am saying "was" because I used to play it online through 2007 for hundreds of hours, but then the small player base in which everyone knew each other suddenly went inactive. The learning curve was huge but once you got into it it was loads of fun. This game required a lot of planning and teamwork and with the good players the battles mostly took more than 4 hours!

3.) Hogs of War
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2d/Hogs_of_War_Screen.jpg)
For so long I was fully in love with this game. The 25 single player missions were all great, especially in the end winning required a lot of skills and a group of highly leveled up pigs. Plus all the fun with friends? Priceless! Too bad my disk is scratchy after all these years, the game keeps freezing on a regular basis so it's unplayable. And here in Czech it's almost impossible to find!

@puracz:

If you haven't yet tried it/heard about it...ARCHON may be right up your alley...
 ;)

I didn't even get Black/White 1. Gen V pokémon just look to ugly to me, except for Oshawott. You sure are nice to your friends if you're offering to buy them games.

I have the same problem. Most of my friends/cousins don't really like Pokemon. There are a few though, but I still never really get a chance to duel them or trade. I usually pick up both copies of the game at launch and the guide and then just trade back and forth using 2 DS systems.

I don't think I really have a lot of games to add to this list though... lets see...

.hack both original and G.U.
Patapon
Klonoa
Onimusha
Jak & Daxter
Raiden
Deathsmiles
Persona
Metal Gear (At least within my family)
Assassin's Creed (same as Metal Gear)
Resident Evil (same again)

Funny story about Metal Gear Solid. I lent it to my cousin to play and he seemed to really dig it, until he had to contact Meryl by looking for her Codec number on the back of the cd case. I think the breaking of the 4th wall severely put him off and he's not touched a MGS game since. He also has the 1st Assassin's Creed game and "just couldn't get into it", I think it's because it heavily into sci-fi rather than all assassin, all the time.

Thanks for the heads-up about Archon! I think that I own an untouched copy on Steam, until I get an access to my online library I'll make sure I won't forget about it.

And yes regarding Reversi that's true, I also played it for some time, together with Gomoku. But unlike in Chess I did not experience the "discovering something new every day" feeling so I had not sticked with them for long.

So, when games started having more meaningful multiplayer, especially when you were playing at the same time, there were some games that we loved for that aspect and haven't aged well.  The original Battletanks game and Return fire for PSX.

Klik N' Play was released by Maxis?  I think for PC, and it was this uber basic, create a sprite and give it some programming, and you could make your own games.  Me and a good friend played with that for HOURS and HOURS.  I never found a game/development deal that was the same level of ease, or at least not one that I cared to give the time of day to.
