I don't know a lot of people who own both Sony and Microsoft consoles. For me, the PS1 came out first so when PS2 and Xbox were released, I stuck with Sony--then the PS3 and Xbox 360 arrived and I also continued with the Sony brand.
There were very few games I wanted that were exclusive to Xbox/Xbox 360 and I really had no complaints about my Playstation consoles. I did have an N64 though (Mario!) and I also bought a Wii (for family/party games).
Do you own consoles from both Sony and Microsoft? When a new console was released, how did you decide which one to get?
-
Because I was hated the Playstation, I went with the Xbox. I hated the playstation because I was still an Nintendo Fanboy and saw the Playstation as the competition for the N64. Sony was (and still is) evil.
-
I went with the PS2 because I won it at a party right after it was released. I really enjoyed it, but I bought the 360 to play online with some friends. They all had 360s so that's what I went with. I have all 4 of the consoles, but the PS2 and the 360 get 99% of the playtime versus the other 2.
-
PS2: Because I already had a Dreamcast and it was dead, I wanted something backwards compatible with the PS1, and didn't want anything to do with Nintendo home consoles after the N64 (at the time).
-
Playstation has been my favorite for years. I actually do have all the systems but the Xbox/360 hardly have any games that appeal to me (D&D and Morrowind are the exception). Xbox systems are known for problems and mine were no different. Our 360 doesnt even work at this time and only 1 of the 2 Xbox systems still work. The playstation always has the greatest available game line up and the best set of controllers ever! :D
-
My brother convinced our parents to get us the PS2 when we were younger, and I'm glad he did. While my friends had the Xbox, I just didn't see the appeal of any of the Xbox-exclusive games. PS2 still stands as my favorite console.
When I moved out and into an apartment with two gamers, one owned the Wii and PS3 while the other owned the 360. I was surprised to find that I preferred the available games for the 360, so when they both moved out, I got a 360.
But now it seems like the games for the 360 have tapered off (and less friends are playing their 360s [usually due to the consoles breaking]) and the PS3 is still living (kinda) large and I'm missing out on titles like Journey.
Tempted to get a PS3 now, but I think I can wait until more news comes out about the next gen of systems...
-
I chose the Gamecube! HA!
...
Later on I got a PS2, because I wanted to play... FFX-2? What? Well, quickly enough I got games that were actually good. During that generation I didn't like the idea of Microsoft joining the console market. Actually, I still have no idea what they're doing in it :P
I never bought an original Xbox until this year. Now that I have an Xbox I kinda wish I hadn't completely ignored it, it actually has some cool stuff.
-
IMO, the Gamecube is the most fun now. It has more games on it that I like to play now. In fact, my Wii has more Gamecube games played on it than Wii games.
-
I was a super Nintendo fan up until the PS1/N64/Saturn era. Then I jumped ship to Sega for the Saturn, but also had the N64 and the PS1 eventually. When the PS2 came out I hopped on to that first and picked up Tekken Tag, Klonoa 2 and The Bouncer off the bat. It wasn't til a while later that I picked up a Xbox to play online with friends. I'd say the PS2 is still one of my favorite consoles ever and if I didn't have my PS3, it would still be hooked up for gaming.
Funny enough, when the 360 came out, I jumped ship again and got a 360 first. I didn't like the price point of the PS3 and none of the original games for it did anything for me. I mainly stayed with the 360 for multiplayer w/ friends, but now I rarely play online too. But my 360 collection is sitting at 66 physical games and 69 digital games, while my PS3 is at 6 Physical and 2 Digital. Thats quite the reversal, when you consider that I have 79 PS2 games and only 15 Xbox. :P
-
I first picked the Dreamcast! Then after the Dreamcast support ended(which a blamed mostly on Sony) I went to the Xbox because of the hard drive and online. I eventually picked up a PS2 but that wasn't until after I bought a 360 since it was partially backwards compatible.
-
PS2: I bought Final Fantasy 10 and I knew I wanted to get the older games too.
-
I bought the PS2 when it launched only because I really liked my Playstation. Microsoft also wasn't part of the picture in the beginning. When the Xbox finally did drop I really didn't care too much for it. Only now do I realize that it had some really good games on it. I own it now but back then I wouldn't even bother.
This generation on the other hand. I didn't purchase either. I bought my 360 from a friend second hand with a bad drive. So I handed him $50, fixed it and have been happy ever since. I still plan on buying a PS3. I have a few games already. In all honesty both systems have games that I want to play.
As far a deciding what to get when new consoles drop, it all depends on the games. With what the Wii U has to offer at the moment I know I won't be buying one of those for a while.
-
I chose the Dreamcast! Between the xbox and Playstation 2... I chose the playstation 2 because it had backwards compatibility. Also for some irrational reason I have never wanted or owned an Xbox console. I guess one of the reasons for not getting one is because of space problems with the thing. It is huge.
-
I bought the PS2 shortly after launch because I loved the PlayStation. I always had an aversion to Microsoft, especially when they announced the Xbox. I stuck with my PS2 for the longest time (it's still my favourite console and game library) and refused to get a 360 (or PS3) when it launched. My boyfriend had gotten a 360 for cheap from a friend several years ago, knowing full-well I had zero interest in it, but he wrangled me into developing an interest for it when he bought me Oblivion and Fable. His sneaky plan worked, and I was hooked. :P
We bought an original Xbox a year or two later and got a few games for it as well. I now play mostly on the 360, even though the PS2 is still hooked up and gets attention from time to time.
I never really had a desire to get a PS3 after having the 360, but I'd like to get one when the next gen is available and the price drops significantly.
-
Well, I actually stuck with Sega genesis all through the PS1 era (First video game console, and for some reason couldn't move on) When the playstation 2 was out, my step dad bought a PS1 so I played that frequently but went right back to my genesis. Two years later, right after they dropped out of the market, I bought a Sega Dreamcast, not realizing that they were no longer supported, later selling for a Gamecube. Two years later, sold that for a PS2 (PS3 were already out) and next year a Wii...
Moral of my story. I'm a generation behind ::)
-
I was late to the 32-bit generation as I was busy with college and couldn't afford much. Having owned Sega systems since the Master System I got a Saturn when I could, not realizing that it was more or less on the way out. Although I waited a while to jump in, I did work at a toy store during the PlayStation launch and I remember we only had three pre-orders so I initially didn't expect much from it but then after it launched we were selling out of the system and just about all of games before Christmas. Anyways, jump ahead a generation and again I wasn't sure if I should spend money at a system launch. I did have my Dreamcast already so I could wait on the PlayStation 2, but then I played SSX and was hooked. Got a PS2 within a month of its launch. Being a Shenmue fan I ended up getting a Xbox when Shenmue II released.
This generation I actually got a Wii first even though I had never bought a Nintendo console before. Again, money was tight and at the time I was doing some freelance game reviews and figured I better get a new system, and the Wii was the least expensive. Admittedly, motion controls sounded intriguing at the time. The Wii had its moments but I'm not a Mario or Zelda fan so the system eventually fell flat and I needed something new. I chose the Xbox 360 since it was a less than the PS3 and the holiday bundle had Forza 3 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. This is October 2007 so I got it two years after launch. At that time Xbox 360 had more exclusives and I did try the system and liked the gamepad quite a bit (never too fond of the Dual Shock). Obviously the PS3 has had the better exclusives of late, though it doesn't matter much since I'm in a good position to borrow one and play the exclusives whenever I need to. In fact, I've had a PS3 at my place for some time now since it hasn't been needed at work. I have no loyalties to any one company, I really don't see any reason to. I like games and if there is something I want to play I'll find a way to play it.
-
I had a Dreamcast and a PS1 before those systems came out. For the first year (give or take a little) I was more than content with my PS1/Dreamcast combo especially since there were still PS1 games coming out. What finally convinced me was seeing Morrowind and to a lesser extent Halo: Combat Evolved on XBox. I just had to have Morrowind. The game looked so immersive, large, and explorable. And it was one those games that you couldn't just play at a friends house because it was so consuming. Needless to say, I went with the XBox. Plus the hard-drive was a big point for me. I actually used it as a personal jukebox in my bedroom. Great move on my part because I love action-RPGs and Xbox was chockfull of them, plus it had the best versions of multiplatform games that generation. And at the time, I definitely didn't want a Gamecube because the N64 left a sour taste in my mouth.
Now I own all the mainsteam systems from that generation: Dreamcast, PS2, XBox, Gamecube, GBA, & Neo Geo Pocket Color. And every one of them are fantastic systems with unique libraries that are more than worth owning, especially considering the low price that they go for now.

Heh - My decision between the PS2 vs. the X-Box basically came down to fate/a flip-of-the-coin :o
I'll admit to having a pretty 'unusual' gaming-history...
When I was 7-8 years old - I spent A LOT of time down the shore in a time & place where arcades were very popular & populated...I was quickly hooked-on the likes of Dragon's Lair, Zaxxon, Galaga (*Always* had my initials next to the top score), Donkey Kong, Robotron, Tempest, Joust, Dig-Dug, air-hockey, and; hell - even Pinball. Then...
...I started playing on Ataris (C-380 & 2600) when they came out.
I had an Apple ][E for stuff like Ultima.
I kept-up with/stayed current & connected to gaming on/during the Commodore 64, Intellivision, Colecovision, and then, in my early teens, the NES (Mario Bros. & Zelda) came out & I played those.
Nothing unusual, so far...right?
Well...this is where it diverges from most of the friends/other gamers that I used to game with...
They liked (and kept-up w/ gaming) - I liked (and kept-up with) the "wrong crowd", skipping school, getting high, growing my hair 1/2 way down my back, getting/learning how to play a guitar...and everything, good & bad, associated with having long hair, playing a guitar, joining a band, chasing (and, once in a blue moon - getting chased *BY*) girls who were into such things...
TL;DR - Let's say that I got..."detoured"/"distracted" from gaming until right around the time that the PS2 & X-Box were young.
By the time I was interested in buying one, I was so far gone & out-of-touch w/ gaming...that I didn't even know what the differences were between Sony & MS' consoles.
At the time I was ready to buy, it was in December (no stores had either one in stock *or* any idea when they might be getting more in); so, it all came down to me buying whichever became available 1st...turned-out to be the PS2.
I currently own a PS2, (2) PS3's (one's b/c with PS2 games the other's a Slim), a PSP 3000, a Game-Cube, a DS-i-XL, a 3-DS-XL, and a Game-Boy Color...I've also owned an X-Box & a 360.
All things being equal, I've come to find that I prefer Sony's consoles & controllers.
If/When everything is equal...Sony will still always be my 1st choice.
The "FAT" PS3 was the 1st/only console that I've bought at launch for full price, so far.
Next Gen...Sony's "got a lot of s'plaining & convincing" to do if they value & want to keep *This* customer!
However, not being a fanboy/feeling like I "owe" any loyalty to any company or corporation...despite my preference in Sony's products...when it came down to choosing between getting a 3-DS vs. a Vita first (I'll eventually get the other one, too) - I had to go w/ the 3-DS...well...the 3-DS-XL; actually - since I was lucky enough to not be an early-adopter -which is very good- because - had I bought a launch 3-DS at launch 3-DS prices...only to have Nintendo release a "bigger & better" version so quickly...I would *NOT* have been a happy customer :P
Really, what won me over to the 3-DS-XL was:
Devil Survivor: Overclocked,
SMT: Soul-Hackers, and Etrian Odyssey 4 (I was very confident that we'd be getting these when I bought it) *Compared* to Vita's (IMO) lack of any "must-have" RPG's out or announced & confirmed.

I didn't choose - I've had multiple formats every gen going as far back as the Amiga/ST.
That doesn't mean I don't have preferences, but I'd never want to be without a few options.

I was a kid/teenager through most of the generations of gaming, so I didn't have cash of my own to buy multiple systems. I had to beg my mom for one, and even then I usually got them a few years after launch when they were cheaper.
-
I was lucky enough to have parents that were actively interested in gaming :)
-
I originally had a lot of hope for the PS2, but eventually developed a grudge against Sony during the PS2 era due to them being f'in assholes (shutting down import shops and other nasty things)... Its too bad because I Love the PSX/PS1... The xbox1 was a superior system albeit lackluster 3rd party support and the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast, so it was an easy choice for me.
Over promise and under deliver is Sony's motto it seems. The hype machine that is Sony failed again with the PS3, So naturally the 360 (with its better hardware and software toolkits) have won over the PS3.
I am a collector so I own them all, but only buy Sony's hardware for exlusives. Just about every game performs better on Microsofts hardware.
-
For me, it wasn't really complicated: Own all the consoles and the problem is done.
Seriously, when I was young, my dad and I decided that, if we had to choose between consoles and exclusives, it was just better to own all the consoles and play a little bit of everything... Too bad we lost all of them to a fire...
When I restarted buying consoles, I went with Nintendo consoles, because I wanted to play with my family and they were generally cheaper. I later went with a PS2, because I am a fan of RPGs the Xbox selection of RPG is... well, limited.
Nowadays, I own all of the major consoles, though my main console is the PS3; it's easier to find good condition used PS3 games.

PS2 vs XBOX: I chose the PS2 because it had more games that appealed to me and I also got into the PS1 late in its life, so naturally I wanted a PS2. The XBOX was the new kid on the block and I think many of us had our doubts. While the XBOX has grown on me a ton since it first came out, I still vastly prefer the PS2.
PS3 vs 360: Funny enough, I actually went with a 360 before I bought my first PS3. I remember specifically wanting to play Forza, Mass Effect, Project Gothem Racing 3, and a few other XBOX exclusives at the time. There just wasn't as much on the PS3 around launch that impressed me that much, and the 360 got a 1-year head start. However, about a year and a hald into owning my 360, the damn disc drive broke and out of warranty would have cost like $150 to replace. I sold it as is on ebay, some guy fixed it, and then contacted me 4 or 5 months later because it went RRoD. He was wonderng about a partial refund even though it didn't have that issue at the time lol. I ended up not getting another 360 for a long time, and instead got a PS3. That system really grew on me and it's still my preferred system over the 360.
On a side note, it's crazy to think this thread was created before the Wii U, PS4, and XBONE came out. Freakin time flies...
-
I chose the 360 over the PS3 because I had no idea playstation existed. All I knew is my brother like Xbox so when I decided to jump back into the gaming world, I went with Xbox. I started noticing the PS3 when I would go looking for 360 games, and started to pick up ones I found cheap. Less than a year later, the Uncharted 3 bundle was too tempting and I got a ps3. Love them both. I'm on my 2nd 360 (Disc drive needs to be fixed on my original) and I'm still on my 1st ps3.
-
So I've always been Nintendo first and it wasn't until Final Fantasy IX came out that I got a PS1, them from there I always just went with PS consoles for Final Fantasy and Resident Evil games.
-
PS2 released before the Xbox and I was much more interested to see what that system had over the Xbox. I got an Xbox probably sometime in the next year after it launched, almost entirely because of Halo. I did play other games on it, but that console, for most people really, was a Halo box lol PS2 had more of the actual games to play though overall.
Things after that flipped, as it was the Xbox 360 that interested me and not the PS3. Xbox was starting to have the games I want, Halo 3, Dead Rising, etc..., I didn't see a lot with the PS3 that interested me and the PS3 had that super high cost. I never even got a PS3 till I got the slim as a gift and that was maybe a year or so before the PS4 launched. I was glad I made the choice as the PS3 did not have a lot for me outside of a couple games.
Things THEN flipped again, where Xbox went full stupid on the Xbox One, had zero interest in anything they were doing, while the PS4 seemed super decent and was absolutely the right choice.
Now the PS5 isn't super great, but it's fine, and Xbox might as well not exist for me because everything is coming to PC right away anyways. Sony is bringing stuff to PC also, but it's usually a good year or so after release, but there is starting to become less reasons to own a console if owning a PC, other than a Nintendo system.
-
Both of these were true at the time I purchased them:
- the PS2 was the cheapest DVD player on the market
- the PS3 was the cheapest BD player on the market
Xbox never entered my mind. By the point I got around to buying a PS3, HD-DVD was already dead.
-
PS2 was a dvd player, a ps one and a walkman all in one with at least 2000 more iconic games than og xbox. That one was easy money.
I chose xbox 360 because its what all my friends played om and in fairness its achievement system and UI was superior. Its controller as well. However rrod and lack of industry changing exclusives drove me to ps3 which im more into now.
-
Actually, it always mostly came down to which console was the most established, or the most affordable at the time, whenever I'd decided I was ready for an upgrade.
I was more than ready to pounce on the Dreamcast when it launched, and then, my brother and I not sharing so well with it - I decided to save up and buy another one for myself. Before I could do that, the PS2 was out and it was spring of 2001. They had just started to become more readily in stock, and I thought.... well, that's the latest and shiniest toy, may as well go for a PS2. So PS2 kept me occupied and I was not interested in any other console for quite some time after that. I didn't feel like I needed to own multiple competing platforms back then.
Similar as with the Xbox 360. It was more established in my mind, I knew friends who had it, it had more value-oriented bundles available by the time I decided I wanted a 7th gen console. So, Xbox 360 it was.
I never spent much time weighing the pros and cons of competing systems. It wasn't based on specific games, or system specs, or bias for a brand. Just a gut feeling.
-
I didn't
Choose the gamecube instead back in the day
-
I actually owned a N64 AND a Playstation, but I considered myself a Nintendo-Child. Well, up until I was introduced to Final Fantasy ... that actually FORCED me to buy an PS2 in order to te able to play Final Fantasy X ... that's a purchase I'll never regret.
I was actually in the lucky position to mostly own every actual big-name console, but honestly, the Playstations were the ones I played with the most up until today. Especially my beloveth Big PS2 which I pruchased at my 15th birthday, and that has never disappointed me. I couldn't count the 1000s of hours I put in this thing 8) and still am
-
For the PS2/Xbox gen, there were a few reasons I went with PS2 over Xbox.
- Backwards compatible with PS1
- I liked the controller already
- Onimusha looked really good (and remains good)
- Microsoft jumped into the console space by buying out talent instead of building it. Even back then I recognized this for what it was and wasn't a fan.
I didn't buy one at launch though as I had my Dreamcast and PS1. I waited until the following tax return came in... so April-ish of 2001. There was still a severe shortage of PS2 systems so every day I was calling stores within a 2 hour drive radius. Finally got lucky.
Well... lucky-ish. Got to the store where they were holding the PS2 for me. I had my PS1 with me to trade in and pay for the taxes. Went to pay for the PS2 and my card was declined. It hit me that I had forgot to transfer my tax return into my checking from my savings, not wanting to accidentally spend it. I told them I'd be right back and headed to the ATM. Savings accounts at the time had a max withdraw of $150 at my bank per day. So that was half. I scrambled having to leave the mall and head to Target to use my debit card and get cash back... $151 pack of gum. Then I had to race back to the mall as they were almost closing... the closest mall entrance had already been locked so I ran to the next and ran through the mall, full speed, looking like an idiot about to shit his pants. Made it to the store just as they were closing their gate. I was very happy they let me complete the transaction. I was sweating profusely, regardless of being in decent shape. Had the guys laughing a bit at me, but I had my PS2. I simply didn't have enough for the second controller or a game until I could transfer more money from my savings the following day.
It was the only Playstation I ever kept vertical and once I swapped it out with the PS2 Slim, I kept all systems horizontal from then on. As for the OG PS2 I had for many years... I fully upgraded it to play Resident Evil Outbreak at its best. I had purchased the HDD that came with one of the online FF games. I had purchased the online adapter. I even got it a USB keyboard for pregame chat. Good times.

For the PS3/360 generation, I continued to stick with Playstation for even more reasons than the PS2 gen.
- There were 15 games in production I knew I wanted to play on it; Uncharted being at the top.
- Launch PS3's were backwards compatible with both PS1 and PS2 games.
- Xbox 360 RRoD was in full effect already.
- Xbox fans had proven to be complete dicks... even those working at the stores; story to follow.
I bought my launch PS3 about a week after launch, just before Thanksgiving. I had missed the slim window for preordering due to being at work and every day, would meander the local shops, asking if they'd gotten any shipments of PS3's in. For some background, I had worked at one of the two local EB Games stores a little better than a year prior to this for a couple years.
One day, I walked into the EB Games I hadn't worked at and did the usual asking. The guy behind the counter straight up lied, asking why I wanted a PS3 when 360 was going to be getting every game the PS3 has and that there were no exclusives on Playstation anymore. I laughed and called him out on it, after he said they didn't have any in stock but pushed for me to buy the 360 instead. I understood he was trying to make the sale, but bold face lying like that isn't the way to go about doing it. It wasn't long before he was insulting people that preferred Playstation and that didn't sit well with me.
The following day, I made my rounds again, going into the same store. I immediately saw the same guy, and reversed course, not wanting to deal with the fanboyism anymore. As I headed up the escalator, a familiar face was heading down the other. He used to be a coworker of mine at the other EB Games and we were friends. Within the few seconds of the escalator ride, I found out he had been promoted to store manager of this location and not only that, they had PS3's in stock... but only the 20GB models. I didn't care.
By the time he reached the bottom and I reached the top, I quickly flipped around and joined him in his store. As he went into the back to grab one of the systems, I waited at the counter. The jerk from before asked me if I had changed my mind and wanted to buy a 360 instead. I told him I was here for a PS3 and he said they didn't have any and I need to let it go, offering the 360 again. I simply smiled and waited until my friend came out with the PS3 and put it on the counter in front of me, telling me that they had just gotten a shipment yesterday but wasn't supposed to sell them until Black Friday, two days later. He made the exception for me and I bought the in store warranty, an extra controller and Resistance Fall of Man with it. The jerk was a mix of confused and irritated. I loved it.

I picked up all of them first was the Ps2 it was the first to release then later the Xbox cause I wanted to play Halo and the next gen was 360 first then later Ps3 because I wanted to play Disgaea.
