Darko gave us a thread about games that really suck (http://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,2089.0.html), so why not have the opposite? Games you bought that you thought would be trash but ended up being enjoyable.
I'll open this up with this:

V.I.P.
I bought it thinking I'd get a trainwreck of a game... and I was wrong! What I got was a strange hybrid of Simon / Parappa The Rapper (push the button combination on the screen to beat up the bad guys), target shooting (shoot or snipe the bad guys) and puzzle games. The story sequences are scary, but they're decent for a game that's eleven years old. The only problem is that it's apparently very short, I played it for an hour and a half last night and I think I'm already halfway through the game.
Anyone care to share their own games that don't suck?
-
How could anything with Pam Anderson's thigh on it suck anyhow? :)
-
Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday: When I bought this one I was not expecting much, but it actually turned out to be a really cool platformer with interesting levels.
Baseball Simulator 1.000: When I saw this game I just assumed it would be an old boring sports game. Turned out to be a lot of fun and reminds me a lot of a game I used to own called Bad News Baseball.

Viking: Battle for Asgard (360) - I picked this up used at GameStop for about $6.99. There were multiple copies on the shelf, and at first glance I thought it was gonna be a stinker. I was so wrong! It's a great action, hack 'n slash game, and took me completely by surprise. The in-game world is beautiful and the battles are epic. I found the final boss fight to be incredibly difficult, though, and have yet to finish it for that reason.

All I saw from Soera's post was:
"suck...Pam Anderson's thigh" :P
Is she still considered Canadian if she's more than 50% silicone made in the US?! :o

The game was recently released for PCs, too, but since it was made by the developers of the Total War series, I thought it'd be a boring strategy game.
Also, I take back my comments on VIP. Why? I beat the game last night... AFTER AN HOUR AND A HALF OF GAMETIME.

If I could last 90 minutes with Pamela, Id personally be pretty proud! :)

I stand by my statement that Bionic Commando for 360/PS3 is NOT a bad game. I played it all day long when I first got it and enjoyed it quite a bit actually. Sure some of the story is wtf, and they totally make Spencer look retarded, but gameplay wise I found it very entertaining.

I've got that game for PC but my rig can't run it.
However, I like the developers, and I know they made good games while they still existed, so I'm sure it won't be bad.

The Boy is a big fan of The Incredibles. So, my wife finds the GameCube game at a thrift store and buys it. It's a little hard for my son, since he's only 3; but I had a lot of fun with it. It's not bad at all. He likes watching me play it, and I'm happy to let him watch.
-
Cosmic Carnage. That game is one of my favorite games of all time. It may be cheesy, and have some not-so good controls, but if you can dismiss that, then its a great game with amazing visuals and a great soundtrack. I recommend it.

Got like, sixes and sevens by reviewers, but was 4-5 bucks on Gohastings and Amazon. I figured it would be terrible, but I found myself having a lot of fun with it. The weapons are neat, and it is about the right length.

That's what makes me hate it so much. It is fun for the first few areas. Then it suddenly becomes nearly unplayable in it's difficulty. I mean radiation everywhere to the point that you can like never land, you are just constantly swinging while trying to battle enemies and those damn robot/mech things. Those annoying as hell flying orb things drove me insane, too.
The game just draws you in and then smacks the crap out of you.

Not in the slightest. You should give it a shot! Especially since it's now been released for PC (didn't know that BTW). :)

I thought you were trolling. But you're right, if you didn't tell us, i would think this game sucks.
Anyway,

Black for PS2/XBOX, thought it'd be just another mindless FPS, but i really enjoyed it.
No multiplayer tho, only single player campaign, but it's really good.
http://cdn3.spong.com/pack/w/e/wet307563l/_-Wet-PS3-_.jpg
Wet for PS3, got a lot of bad review, but it has a unique retro movie style, bit linear, for the gunfight etc.
http://cdn0.spong.com/pack/s/t/strangleho260890l/_-John-Woo-Presents-Stranglehold-PS3-_.jpg
Stranglehold, not sure everyone will like this one but if you like john woo's movies, it's enjoyable.

I just picked-up WET for the PS3 a few weeks ago for, like, $4 or $5 - haven't played it any yet, though...

Really cool thread idea! For my part, the hamtaro games on gameboy color/advance (Ham-hams Unite! and Ham-ham Heartbreak) are, of course, for children...but I ended up having so much fun playing them. Might just be some guilty pleasure though :P
Godzilla on good old gameboy was great, too. I first thought it would be another boring movie-style game, but the kind of puzzle-like gameplay is fun. I seem to be in a minority by thinking so, though.

I loved Viking: Battle For Asgard, as well. And anyone that I've talked to that actually played it seemed to enjoy it, as well. I bought it for under $10 at Gamestop. Best of all there is like no loading times, travelling between areas and going from inside to outside is seamless. Criminally underrated game. However, the combat can get a bit repetitive.
-
I was going to give some props to Viking: Battle for Asgard but it seems to be getting plenty of love. Which is a good thing I enjoyed the game a lot. Crank up some Amon Amarth during the siege battles and lay waste to everything.
I still have to beat it on hard, but it took me better part of 2 hours and an uncountable number of continues to beat the last boss the first time. So I'm a little daunted by it.
ko1ru
Don't give up man it can be beaten. Learning the Valkyries slash? or whatever is pretty much the bread and butter of that fight.

Nice! I'm glad to see others enjoyed the game as much as I did. You're right, Burningdoom, it's terribly underrated.
And thanks for the encouragement, ffxik. I'll have to give it another go. :)

Well you can, it's not a long game.
I dont remember for sure, took me around 8hours maybe.
Normal mode is too easy.
-
I hope I can pick up a cheap Steam key somewhere, I really want to try that game now. I had my doubts since the devs specialize in historical military simulation games (really awesome ones, but very much not my thing) but hearing that the game is good, I'll grab it sometime.

Deadly premonition or Red Seed Profile, heard a lot of bad reviews for this game, a few good review, mostly people said the graphics were PS2 graphics, but who cares about the graphics ? Seriously. Try this game.
It's awesome, great story, music, characters.
If you love twin peaks you gonna love this game.

Indeed!

Uh...what's Twin Peaks like - *seriously*; I see it mentioned pretty often on-line, but I've never seen it & know nothing about it?!
-
It's one of the best tv show, david lynch's tv serie.

That's for the serie but there's also a movie. I don't recommend you to watch it unless you watched the serie.
You'd be confused.
-
The movie spoils the series, so you know.
-
Right and too many characters, might be difficult to understand how they are related etc.

I see a LOT of people claiming this game sucks, and it seems that the hate is based solely on its cover art. It's kinda understandable just looking at the box AND the title, it looks like just another braindead generic grey-brown FPS... But it's actually really great.
There's actually original weapons, solid and unique gameplay, and it actually has fun with the genre, it's not just "take cover and shoot stuff". I love the scoring system, there's a ton of ways to kill enemies (and half the fun is figuring out all the ways you can kill enemies and what the different killshots are... and how to maximize your score) and the story even manages to be half-decent at parts.
Love this game, I feel it gets undue hate for no reason.

I totally agree with you.
The big thing that most people didn't like about Bulletstorm is that it was an old-school "We'll make a game about whatever we want and we don't care if it dosen't make a lot of sense, as long as it's fun to play". Seriously, this game is an absolute blast to play.

...this is one of the games that the fucking NRA (of all people!) are blaming for all of those poor, young, innocent kids killed in Connecticut >:(

the nra also blaming a obscure flash game (http://freegames.thetechherald.com/onlinegames/3933/kindergarten-killer.html) from 2002 and unless you specifically look for it, you will not find it

@HTimreimer -
You're right...I did see this game mentioned, too.
Now, some Senator (can't recall his name right now) -w/ Lieberman's approval & agreement- is trying to pass legislation to legally ban GTA5; as well ???
-
It'll never happen. And blaming gaming is just a scapegoat, they tried blaming games on Columbine and they'll try blaming games on this.
But, lets keep the thread on topic and keep out of political debates, please.

i'm pretty sure that that won't happen because a law like that would severely damage video game industry and video game industry gives the government money and law like that would stop that

My bad - I didn't mean to start any debate here (political or otherwise)...It just struck me as being pretty hypocritical that A/Any (organization that claims to be all about preserving people's rights) would blame something/anything (and try to ban/censor AKA "taking *other* rights *AWAY* from people) through use of a scape-goat.
Again, sorry for derailing the topic - the murderer & his mom didn't live far from me...and the school's < 1.5 hours from me...so it really kinda' hit close to home...I won't bring it up here anymore 8)

It's ok man, I wasn't trying to be a huge dick or anything.

I picked this one up at Goodwill today for only $3.99. Got home and went to test the disc and found myself going into race after race. The racing is fun, the cars handle well, there are plenty of car choices, and it has a great soundtrack that keeps you pumped (which is great in a racing game!).
But then I noticed bad reviews about the game when I went to check it out as I added it in my collection, surprised the hell out of me. Guess everyone back then was spoiled by the likes of Gran Turismo and Metropolis Street Racer.
-
Wow, I can't believe I didn't think about this game when I saw this topic.
It's another modern one that gets unwarranted hate:

This game is REALLY good. Moreso for fans of the originals, since it's essentially a remake of the first 2 games but it goes WAY deep story-wise. The combat is some of the best this gen, the story is amazing, the characters are great, the voice acting is perfect (especially Jim Cummings as the Terror Mask)... Not only that, but it includes the 3 first games as unlockables (with the arcade version of the first, rather than the slightly lamer TurboGrafx-16 version). Just a great package. It has minor problems (loooong loading times being the biggest one), but nothing that will really bother real gamers... Love this game.

I'm on board with Splatterhouse. I bought the game because it was cheap. When I started it, I wasn't a fan. I almost gave up after the first 15 min. I'm glad I didn't. It was a great time. The action was fun and the story kept me involved. It was a pretty cool game and definitely not a waste of time.

I actually hear that a lot and I actually totally get that, the game isn't terribly welcoming when you start playing it (with it not really explaining anything gameplay-wise), but once you get how it plays it's awesome.
