what are some gameplay elements and practices that you think are overused or just plain bad
skill trees: why dose it seem like every game nowadays has skill trees even if it doesn't improve the game or make anymore difficult to play and i can be the only one who thinks skill trees are overused in modern day video games

Escort and follow me missions. I hate having to keep the person alive but having to follow the person and keep him alive is even worse!

It's even worse when there are no checkpoints and it's a long mission. ha

I don't mind them too much as long as they stay the same each time you fail, when the buttons are random and you can just memorize the pattern then I really hate them!
Or if they come at the end of a hard part and you have to replay it to get back to the quick time that I really hate too!

Absolutely this. Totally ruined RE5.

non free world play when it is an rpg.. Nothing more than this bothers me... keeping borders tight and not allowing the person adventure and experience the world you create makes me feel bound and even with a game story it doesn't always help... There should be difference categories say to an rpg say Parasite evil or Fable/ Fable: Lost Chapters to say something like Final Fantasy series / Elder scroll series (Excluding Battlespire and Redguard) so on an so forth. Just sayin....

I don't mind this, but I've had broadband for 10+ years. It usually means I don't have to worry about DRM or keeping track of discs. I like being able to log into GOG, Steam, Etc and just clicking "install" without worrying about keys and discs years after purchasing a game. It also usually means a safer, hack/mod free gameplay that has ruined many games for me in the past.

always on drm is bullshit and dose not stop pirating but instead it just makes it more annoying for future players because now they need to hack it to play it

This has lessened in the years, but the "go find __ pieces of ______" scavenger hunt mechanics. It was THE staple of the 32-bit platformer era.

Seconded, on both accounts.
I also really hate disappearing platforms (think Mega Man). So freaking annoying.

Those platforms are tough. But I really like the rhythm of them.

Yep. I especially hate the falcons in Ninja Gaiden.

I used to hate Medusa heads. But now I can dodge them no problem. Flea men on the other hand are total bitches.

Quick Time Events. God I hate them. Hate hate. Hate hate hate.
This. So much this.
To explain my hate... Well, I have yet to find a single good QTE in the history of the gaming medium. They really add nothing to the gameplay and are just a time waster. Even in games I like I hate QTEs... like Bayonetta, amazing games but the QTEs just piss me off.
Even the first QTE game I can think of, Dragon's Lair, isn't what I'd call a good game *raises flame shield*. It's cool for the time, playing though a cartoon and stuff, but it's not fun.

I'm one of the few that actually don't mind QTEs. But I understand and agree with what you said.
In my opinion, Dragon's Lair is more of a fascinating experiment than good game. I really like Dragon's Lair. But it is not a "good" game. To possibly put this in perspective, I absolutely love the anime Initial D. But it is in no way a fantastic show. It is typical by-the-book shonen. Dragon's Lair is in the similar situation. People enjoy the game and have nostalgia for it. This gets confused with being good.

Question: are you me? I mean, other than the not minding QTEs thing :P
