Whenever I see these huge collections, I can never quite shake the feeling that most of them are all about quantity over quality. I never get the sense that I'm looking at the collection of someone with discerning taste, or someone who views it like a curator, bringing together what they personally consider to be the best of the best.

People can buy whatever they want obviously, it's just weird to me.

I started out with volume (you can see that in my NES collection), but I've decided that there are plenty of good games to keep my collecting focused for years to come. I don't know that I'll ever own a complete collection of anything unless I find a really good deal on a lot or something.

I guess for me there's always had to be a focus on prioritization and quality, mainly due to budget and space considerations. I could probably build up a sizeable stack of cheap NES stuff, but then I'd have... a big stack of games I don't even like. I could understand someone being a completionist if they really like a series though, and I'm slowly doing that with Megami Tensei :p

GREAT choice! The SMT games are awesome.

GREAT choice! The SMT games are awesome.

Yeah, I got lucky with that series, too. Back when SMT: Nocturne first came out, I saw it on the shelf at GameStop and, even though I knew literally nothing about it, I picked it up blindly. I've pre-ordered every game in the series since then, so I haven't missed a thing... even Devil Survivor Overclocked, and I don't even own a 3DS yet :p

Same here. When we started up VGC I was in hardcore Game Boy  buying mode. And was just starting up Saturn games. I've since decided that I'd rather focus on Castlevania, RPGs and SHMUPs Plus whatever series I enjoy the most.

I looked through your collection after we got going back-and-forth a bit about Cave, and whatever strategy you've taken seems to be working out well. Tons of great stuff!

It's all like "look at all this stuff I never ever use and just have because I'm cooler than you!"

I have a lot less games and consoles than he does (obviously) and even I have trouble playing all I want to play, let alone wasting money/time on stuff I don't want. I can't imagine him having any time to play anything he has.

Not that his collection isn't nice... but why? It's such a waste to have all this stuff and not using most of it, just putting it on shelves.

... And dammit this guy's voice is freaking annoying.

I made it through about 5 minutes of the first video and I really just got bored. When he started to drone on about the PS3 sign about non PS3 stuff I checked out. It looks like an impressive collection but he should have kept it to 15 minutes max!

I will buy pretty much anything that is cheap so I'm roughly in the same boat as this guy, if there is a game that I really want I will save up to buy it but I enjoy going out for the hunt and buying something so I would rather buy 5 average or common games in person for $10 than to spend $100 on something I have to order online.

^^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^

I have tons of useless shit.  Tons of it.  But you know what, I've bought 99% that useless shit in person and at a good price.  I'm not saying I've bought anything online, but its something specific that I really want.  That is just too much stuff, even for me.

I guess it's cool and all, if that's what you want.  He really does have everything.  I've spent a good amount to amass the pile I have. I can only imagine what kind of coin he's dropped.

The only coin he probably dropped was his parents.. An in no way could he have collected that working even full time burger flipping..... But I agree that is a pretty nice collection.. would I like to own a collection like that? don't know depends if I had alot of money to not have a job to enjoy it...

That dude could be 25 or so. My little brother doesn't look any older than that and he's 25.  If I wouldn't have gotten married when I was 24 I could have spent that much. Single, college grads can save (or spend) loads of cash.

I think, if I didn't have as many hobbies as I do. I could have amassed a collection (maybe not as large) like that. But, between everything I do and and the amount of money I've spent on each, I just have what I currently do. haha

Totally agree. That dude could be 30 for all we know. If I spent all of my extra money on video games that wouldn't be too difficult to pull off. It would be more about time and finding the items complete than the outflow of cash. This stuff really isn't THAT expensive. He mentioned buying lots in one of the videos which drastically cuts down on the per unit cost (NES games, for example). If I actually sold everything that I ended up with that I didn't need (as opposed to giving it away - which I do a lot) I could probably pay for most of my retro collecting.

So much this. Between video games, experimental/electronic music (much of it on vinyl), comics and manga, anime, and foreign films, my budget is already stretched pretty thin. So is the square footage of my apartment :p

Yep. Between this, miniatures, arcade building, movies and CDs/music. It's no wonder. Not to mention I keep eyeballing fancy personal audio upgrades...

Audio is dangerous to the wallet, hardcore. Thankfully, while I could use a better turntable, I'm pretty solid in that department. Splurged on some rather nice Focal speakers about a year ago, which were expensive as hell for me ($750 per pair), but I don't see myself upgrading any time soon :)

I could use another pair for surround, though. Hrm...

Ya last year I finally splurged on good headphones (and the quality jump was super noticeable) and upgraded to a new iPod Classic 160gb. But I could eventually see myself going for some over the ear cans and portable amps, etc.. sigh.

I had the same revelation when I finally got a pair of truly good headphones. Much more comfortable to listen to for long periods, and at the time I got them, that was the only way I had to listen to music on my computer.

I considered going for an amp (Head-Fi is convincing), but since mine aren't particularly high impedance and I usually only use headphones at home, I didn't see much point. Maybe if I get Sennheiser HD-600's down the line, just for a different flavor than my D2000's :p

I'm not knocking the guy's collection at all. It's pretty impressive. All I'm saying is it must be his only hobby. Since I don't think anyone w/ multiple interests could pull it off, especially if those interests all take cash to equally continue.

Please tell me you are joking right?

Here's my take on it: I think the collection is absolutely amazing and very impressive for one person to have amassed. Also, I think some of you are undervaluing just how much that whole collection might have cost the guy. I'm gonna guess he's  got a solid 50 to 75k into it. And the time....ohhh the time. Even if he just sat and pressed "Buy-it-now" on ebay again and again, there's a considerable amount of effort that would have to be consumed to get to this stage. I don't envy the guy, but I certainly respect what he's put together there.

I get the feeling this guy got everything on the cheap. I also think the displays make the collection look bigger than it is. Although it is still a big collection

There is a point where he mentions that he is trying to get all the Myst games. If he was spending money, he could get all of the myst games. He has a LOT of the games that you can easily get in trades and from flea markets.

A lot of the boxes (the konami laser scope for example) have gashes and such that make it look like flea market finds or things purchased on the cheap.

I bet he has spent a lot. But I saw nothing that would be mega expensive except a few pieces of hardware. No new systems. It is quite possible that his budget is less than a modern gamer buying new releases. Watching his pickups videos, he definitely digs around for cheap buys in the wild, does trades, etc.

You really think so? I was guessing he was probably between $20k and $40k deep. I don't know how much things like display cases and pre-NES boxed systems cost. Either way, I'm impressed with his collection as well.

I don't have a large collection of anything I don't think. I'm in all the hobby communities I participate in and I have seen other people's stuff. As far as video games go, without seeing Adol's auction last year, as well as that 500k auction from the past day or so, I already knew I had a small collection. I got into it late and like one of my others (Transformers) I've already had sold off stuff.

I wondered if Alpha would show up actually.  For those of you guys that don't know him check out some of his rants.  They are pretty good.  He holds nothing back, good or bad.  Sometimes ill-informed but nobodies perfect.  I would like to mention he's NSFW unless with a headset.  He tends to drop f-bombs at the rate of 1942's Germany on Europe.

People can buy whatever they want obviously, it's just weird to me.

This is the first thing I thought of when I saw shelves full of cart-only NES games - that's the sort of thing you buy by the box at flea markets. I'd much rather have a guy enthuse about a "small" (say, 50-ish games) Super Famicom collection and be able to tell me a little something about every game than this sort of "Look at the volume of games I own! I own lots of things!" type.

Ya. I feel like I could give info about most of the games I own. Except the ones I got in trade from my buddy for the arcade cab. Or maybe most of my Saturn games that were purchased to fill holes.

But then again. I could talk a lot about series like Castlevania, Metal Gear, Assassin's Creed, (maybe) Persona and a few others.

My recent decision to stick closer to my likes, rather than build a complete release list dedicated to a specific console. Is partly due to the fact that I'd rather have stuff I can talk about knowledgeably and stick with games I actually enjoy.

Exactly, there's no skill in spending money but being able to talk about a collection that's personal to you is another matter.

Yeah - I think that this little piece right here, though...makes all the difference :)

Not just stories about the games & series themselves -but- I'd bet that for ~90% of my entire collection that I'd still remember the 'story' and/or situations & circumstances of buying, getting, tracking-down, *amazing* garage-sale-finds (Pokemon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition SEALED for 50 cents, anyone), satisfaction w/ good deals & people/dis-satisfaction, anger, and frustration at not-so-good deals and people, etc...

I'd go so far as to say that it's these memories, *Connections* & *Associations* concerning the *provenance* ("back-stories") of my slowly-built, piece-by-piece collection that matter & contribute MORE to *MY* enjoyment of my hobby than the actual, accumulated little physical pieces of plastic & paper that have filled-up my shelves & closets over the years...regardless of how rare/valuable certain of those pages & pieces of plastic have become  8)

I try to keep my buying down to games that I either want to try, have played and like, or had at one point before the dreaded garage sale (one and only) where I sold off some of my games I had when I was younger. My OCD about having good cases for my Genesis games, and the fact that if I find a Sega CD or Saturn game in good condition I can't resist, has gotten me a few iffy titles. I also used to think I wanted a complete US NES collection. I've also purchased several lots that blessed me with some sports games and whatnot that I wouldn't otherwise own. Other than that, most of my collection is comprised of games I would rate between 7-10 (at least according to my preferences).

I've been toying with the idea of limiting the number of games I own by system. For instance, no more than 100 GBA games, 50 GameCube games,  etc etc etc.

I totally understand wanting a complete collection for one console, but since I collect for so many, it's something I doubt I'll ever seriously try to accomplish.

This may be awe inspiring.  I can at least say that my collection is definitely smaller.  Though 99% is stuff I like to play, and not just sitting in cabinets and on shelves collecting dust.  My collection is for show and play not just for show.  Still is impressive though.

I'm going to agree with ffxik I wouldn't really like a big collection like this if I didn't even play with half of it.. Though I do have some games that came with lot sales that no one would buy like mostly sport games...not hating but if I want to play sports I would be outside not in my room pretending I'm some great athlete.....

In comparison to a fair number of people here I do have a larger collection and I can tell you about 95-98% of them. I track when/where/how much I bought each item for and even without my list in front of me I can almost always tell you where I bought it, roughly how much it was and around the time that it was purchased.

Love those cabinets, must have hit up some store going out of business. Must have cost a fortune buying all those. I personally wouldn't know where to put those in my game room. But still love them.

It's funny youtube suggested those videoes to me yesterday, However if I want my collection to feel small I think I'll just stick with AlphaOmegaSin's Wall of Playstation

Has he ever said how many games he has? I'm subscribed to his channel and I always thought he and I were on a similar collection plain.

Makes two of us.  I don't believe he has put up a number.  Not even a ball park figure.  I thought he and I weren't too terribly far apart.  Until I seen his room tour.  I stood corrected, big time.  If I had to guess I would say batting 2000+ easy.

So I talked to this kid who made the videos after we were all taking guesses at how old he may be....turns out he's 20. Pretty large collection for a 20 year old. Well, not according to some people....  ::)

I'm glad that I am responsible for my own collection.

Mine forced me to get rid of most of my PC game boxes several years ago.

Weren't supportive at all.  Sure they bought me games now and then but I had to work my butt off for the small amount of allowance that I received.  Had to save a damn long time too.  When I left my parents place I had 30-40 total.
