Title: Famicom NES converters
Post by: turf on February 10, 2013, 07:09:58 pm
You know those converters in black box games?  How do you tell one is in there without cracking it open?  I understand they are a little heavier, but I'm no good at that.

From what I've read, it's Gyromite that has them.

Not every gyromite.

I'm not too familiar with the NES, but I did find this video that MIGHT be helpful.

Here is the way I go about it. First it must be a black box game. Second it must be a 5 screw backing. Third (and this is the hardest part for everyone to understand when I explain it) is that the tooth on each pin of the board must be on the side. Let me try to draw a diagram.

Here is the board : [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]          [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] (those are the little gold contacts that you clean or blow on the bottom of the cartridge)

There are little teeth on tip of each one of them. They could be on either side or in the middle. You want them on the side.

Once you get used to looking for them, you will know them instantly.

Btw the most common games to have them is definitely Gyromite. And every single copy of Stack up has one but who wants to cut up a Stack up for a convertor.

So, there's no way to tell. The video says you want the contact to be on the side and soera says you want them in the middle.

There's no rhyme or reason to this. It looks random.

There is one sure way to tell. Just walk into the retail location with a gamebit and start taking the cartridges apart. If you dress up in a costume, like a ballerina or something, they usually skip past asking you to leave and just call the cops. This gives you a solid 5 minutes to find all the converters you can.

It's an old flea market trick.

Sounds like a plan. I make sure there's pictures. Who's got bail money?

I might help out depending on how many converters you get.... and how good the video is :D

You know I went and looked at mine. It is on the side. I cant believe I was thinking backwards. I went and adjusted the first post.

The contacts will be on the side, not in the middle.

How do I know? I've looked for them for 6 months (and have found quite a few).

Soera's also right about the 5-screw only thing.

I got super lucky with Gyromite on my 2nd try, just by going on weight. But ya what has already been said is your best bet. I believe darko posted a how to thread awhile ago too.

I almost bought a HoneyBee the other day.  I just didn't know what a good price for one would be.  It was boxed for $26, I think.  It was between $25-$30.  I probably should have pulled the trigger, but just didn't.
Just out of curiosity, what does a converter like that go for?

I looked into Famicom to NES converters before I decided to look into Gyromite carts. And I think they were like $40-50 bucks? I might have been looking in the wrong places though. For $2 for a Gyromite cart, I figured I could make my own for way less.

I was thinking the same thing. Only problem is that I've never actually seen a Gyromite cart in person, much less one with a converter inside. If you come across another, let me know.

Yeah, they seem to pop up quite frequently in OKC for some reason. I could probably pick one up for someone this weekend if they need it.

I just wanted one for the sake of having it. I don't plan on playing any imports.
