What's your best deal to date? Roughly how much did you save and where was it hidden?
Like i said on our Facebook page, I snagged a complete copy of Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean on Amazon for $60-ish. The same game, regardless of disc art, sells for $80 to $100 on ebay. The downfall of Amazon buying is, I don't know which disc art this one is, but that's not a big deal. I'm just looking forward to playing it and fill the slot for the time being. I'll cross the variant collecting bridge when I get to it.

I got paid $70 to own a copy of Panzer Dragoon saga, and got paid $300 to own a copy of spider-man web of fire. Both are/were complete and in great condition. Sold Panzer Dragoon Saga kind of regret that, but still have web of fire, which is an awful game by the way. I also have had a few copies of Suikoden II that I only paid around $10 for when it was still fairly new, one at target on clearance and one at a local game store. Sold both copes for over $100. Kind of wish I would have bought more of the ones at target since they where new and unopened, but I had no clue they would be worth so much at the time. I also really wish I still had a copy for myself.
-
If we are limiting this to purchases, I bought a copy of the Namco Ms. Pac-Man for $5.00 and it sells on ebay for roughly $50.00. I found it at Play N Trade. Other notable deals that I've found over the years are:
An Atari 800XL complete with a handful of carts for $20.00 from a neighbor.
A Turbografx 16 and power supply, no controllers though for $12.00 from a thrift store.
4 Turbografx 16 controllers, a Turbotap, and original RF switch for the aforementioned console for $10.00 at the swap meet.
If we are counting stuff that was free, then I have even more!

I ran into an old friend who back in the day was a die-hard Saturn fan. He was interested in modding his original Xbox and proposed a trade of his entire Saturn collection if I modded his Xbox. He showed up with about 5 giant bags full of games...
The collection included Panzer Dragoon I, II, Saga, Albert Odyssey, Shining Force III, Guardian Heroes, Burning Rangers, Dragon Force and about 80 other games all in mint condition. I went on to nearly complete the collection before selling it all off a few years back.
-
Bubble Bobble 2 for the NES in the box for $4.99.
-
I'm truly jealous of @matt and this one time awesome Saturn collection.
-
TurboGrafx-16 w/ CD attachment + 10 games for $20 from a friend back in High School...
He regrets it to this day! lol
-
That's a crazy story, Matt. I have a few myself.
1. CiB, never opened copy of Mean 18 for the Atari 7800 for $3. This can sell for around $60 easily.
2. I also recently got a Sega CD with the cords (most important part) and a controller, and it even came with the gen 2 genesis still attached for $8. This can sell for $45.
-
I can officially say, Albert Odyssey was a super good deal.
1) The case has no cracks, or broken hinges.
2) The disc looks mint, no surface marks or scratches at all.
3) It's the Group Disc art, so that's a plus.
4) All the artwork and the manual are in great shape. Though it is missing the Working Designs order form.
Still in all, totally worth the savings when compared to ebay.

I picked up a Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition 360 fight stick pack at Best Buy a couple weeks ago on clearance for $60, marked down from $150. It included a new copy of MK and some DLC, which I already owned, so I sold that stuff on eBay for $40. $20 for the stick!
Also found some family's old NES system in a beat-up Snyder's pretzels box at Goodwill last year. The box was Saran wrapped big time to prevent water damage I guess. Inside I found CIB copies of Burgertime, Play Action Football, All-Pro Basketball, Bible Adventures, and Big Bird's Hide & Speak, an NES console, 4 original controllers, an NES Satellite, all the console's paperwork, and even the original 1989 receipt for the thing! Everything works great and is in really good condition. Goodwill charged me $15 for all of it. That was a nice day :)
-
I just recently snagged FFII (USA) on ebay for $50. It's complete, everything is extremely mint. The guy offered free shipping to Canada (from USA) and that cost him $10. A copy like mine sells for about $80-90 before shipping.
I found it just as it was listed.
-
Ive had several, But the best would Probably have to be Sonic Adventure Limited Edition for the Dreamcast. I found 2 of them from 2 different yard sales in same small town on the same day. One was $0.50 and the other was $0.25, both were only disc. One disc I haven't gotten to work but the other works fine.
other notable finds:
Sega Genesis CDX - $8
Shining force for Sega CD - $1 complete box not even broken and disc in perfect shape.
Atari 2600 - Swordquest: Waterworld for $4 Cart only from flea market in Cali.
Sega 32X - The Amazing Spiderman: Web of Fire complete in box $2 from same Flea market in Cali.
I've gotten lucky throughout the years with flea markets, thrift stores, yard sales and even pawn shops, I don't think I have ever paid more than $20 for any game that I didn't buy new.
-
I don't know if it's my best deal EVER, but I thought it was a good deal and I just got it a few days ago. It's a boxed and complete Sega Master System II. And when I say complete, it has the original system baggie and controller/power adapter baggies. I got it for 40 dollars. The box is in great shape, and the system itself looks brand new. I'm really happy with it.

-
ugh I need to get an SMS II. I remember seeing them stacked up at a discount toy store for $20 years back. *cries*

Ditto! They were like $20 at K B Toys... :*(
-
You know what I didn't realize about it until I got it though, was that they ditched the nicer A/V outs and went with RF only, and you also lose the ability to play the card based games on it. I guess it was the cheaper, late entry version a la top loader NES.
-
I noticed a year or so ago, that the Genesis I have is the same way. RF only, no AV. While the NES and SNES have AV on both.

Genesis 3?
-
Nope it's a model 2. I've had it since it was brand new.
-
Well, Model 2 has A/V out. It's a pin connector that that has RCA ends on it. The SMS II and NES top loader only have the option for an RF output.
-
Ah, cause I was looking for actually AV jacks. ha
-
You guys need to invest in a nintendo s-video adapter. I think I paid a whopping 12 dollars for mine. It works with the snes, n64 and gamecube....and do an a/v mod on your Geneses. I picked a model 2 up with the SCD modded with stereo rca jacks and component video for 30 bucks.

My husband and his best friend got our best deal ever while I was at work. (And before we were married...would not have the game collecting in my blood if it hadn't been for that fateful trip, I'm sure.)
He and the friend went to a local community garage sale that happened every Memorial Day. I was working to pay for my trip to Japan and felt bad calling in, joking that every day I called in was one less game I was coming home with. (So this would have been 2004.) He calls me the moment I'm off the clock to let me know that they got a good deal and they were coming over to my parent's house to divvy it up (I was still in college, and was off for the summer.)
An hour later, the friend's van pulls up, boxes stacked to the brim. I first start off with the obvious "How much did you guys pay?!?!?" to which they giggled and said they were out $25 each, $50 total. Without further ado, here's everything I can remember being in this haul:
9 Intellivisions (2 of them III's, 3 of them CIB)
2 Odyssey2s (CIB)
1 TurboGrafx16
Over 200 Intellivision games, many CIB
Every single U.S. release Odyssey2 game (all CIB...some, like The Wall Street Fortune Hunt, still have their game pieces in plastic)
Repeats on most of the Odyssey2 games
A decent haul of Atari games (I'd say maybe 25?)
A couple random games for other systems (TMNT: The Arcade Game for the NES is the only one I specifically remember)
We spent probably 5 or 6 hours playing random games on the Odyssey2, kept one complete collection of Odyssey2 games for us, with the exception of Power Lords, which we let the friend have in exchange for letting us have the entire collection, and he got all the dupes. The Intellivision games we laid out on the floor and picked around in a circle, not really knowing what anything was worth. We got the TurboGrafx too, although I'm not sure how we pulled that off....maybe let him have most of the Atari games?
Point is, I had the ColecoVision as a kid and was a Nintendo kid growing up, my husband was a Sega kid, neither of us really got rid of anything, and with the addition of this set here, we got married with a pretty healthy start to our gaming collection.
-
My best deal so far happened about a year ago when I was heavily visiting garage sales. A lady had purchased a Nintendo and ten games for her kids back in the day but they never played them. Although they were no longer sealed they were in absolute perfect condition. I paid $50 for all of it, and the gems were the minty boxed NES, Contra Force (like new) and Contra (like new).
-
I love telling this story.
A friend and I where at a Movie Trading Company. In the past 4-5 years, I have bought every label-less Intellivision game I found in hopes it was something I didn't have. Sadly, about 75% turned out to be Poker & Blackjack, and the rest things I already had. So, that day they had 2 new label-less games for $2 and $1. I decided that my days of buying label-less Intellivision games where over. For the next couple of weeks when we went my friend would always bug me to buy them, but I held out. Finally, one week, my friend bought the two games for me as a joke to annoy me. So, we get back to my house and I fire them up. The $2 game is Sub Hunt. I was happy that it wasn't Poker & Blackjack. I plug in the $1 game and it doesn't seem to work, It looked like I was getting error lines. I take it out, clean it, and try again. Same thing. I then pulled out my regular Intellivision (I was using my Intellivsion II for the first part) and plugged it in. The same error lines and stuff. This time, however, I let it run. The lines did all sorts of weird colors and then jumped to a screen with two pictures of Intellivision controllers that lit up as I pressed the corresponding button on each controller. My friend and I both knew what had happened at this point. Turns out that this was an MTE 201 Test Cartridge. It's pretty pricey, going for about $80-$100 on eBay (Buy it nows are usually around $300, but Buy it nows are almost never priced anywhere near correctly.)
Also, while on the topic of the Intellivision, Holy cow Amauriel, that is one of the most legendary stories I have ever heard.
-
Mine was probably a free Atari 5200... yeah, not that good. I'm never lucky. =P
-
@hexen: Yeah, I wish we'd taken pictures of the van as we were unloading it. I still have a couple of extra Intellivisions in the basement (although I recently bought an Intellivison II at a Goodwill since we had the I and III...I think my husband coulda killed me when I brought it home. Then I saw that little glint in his eye and all was forgiven.)
I know we have a lot of copies of Poker & Blackjack, but the one I remember having stacks of was Lock 'n' Chase. Also Frog Bog. I honestly haven't gone back through the Intellivision games in a LONG time...and when we do, it ends up that we play Burgertime (me) and Dragonfire (him).
And we don't have ANY test cartridges, so you've definitely got me there.
-
Recently got a sega Saturn with 2 controllers and the following games
Shining force 3
Albert odyssey
Road rash
Quake
Sega rally
All for $40. Games were all complete and mint. The first and so far only games in my Saturn collection.
-
Oh man, that's an excellent deal. Did the guy not know what he had or what?
-
It was actually kind of odd.
He obviously had no idea what they were worth or he did not care.
He was selling a Dreamcast with a bunch of common games for $100 so I think he was just basing his prices on how old the hardware was.
He mentioned that Shining Force III was hard to find but he still sold me everything for $40.
The battery in the console was dead so I'll have to replace it before I can save anything.
-
@mojoskateco Ya I would have jumped on that deal for sure. I've dropped easily 4x that $40 getting both Shining Force and Albert Odyssey. btw, battery replacement on Saturn is a cake walk. Also, I have a spare memory cartridge I'm selling off if you're interested.
-
I think mine was a Buy It Now eBay deal. Guy sold boxes and manuals for MM1, 2, 3, 5, and 6, all mint and hardly any wear at all for 64 dollars shipped. I used them to replace my boxes with a little wear and tear and sold the other ones off for about $390.
Though I suppose getting the Mega Man 9 press kit direct from Capcom for $50 was pretty good too.
-
Good deals before retro gaming exploded:
-A brand new Atari 2600 Jr. for 5 deutsch marks (now = 2,50€) in a super market stock clearance sale. It has like a billion price tags pasted on top of each other, the oldest one I can make out is a 60 deutsch marks price tag. They also somehow had dozens of copies of Syndicate & Sim City 2000 for the SNES, 2,50 marks each.
-boxed FF3 & complete Splatterhouse 2 for 5 marks each (second hand shop)
-complete and mint Pitfall, Defender, Pac Man (ugh) for Atari which I could haggle down to 8 marks together, also got an NES with a complete and new copy of Super Mario 3 and the obligatory Super Mario Bros. 1 for 20 marks from the same seller (flea market)
-Mega Drive Mk.II together with 8 complete games for 40 marks from a school friend
These kind of deals don't happen anymore :(

Hard to say, but here are my biggest scores since I've been collecting:
Went to a garage sale advertised on CL back in 2011 that promised PS1 games. Get there to find a stack of PS1 games, almost all of them are excellent, rare titles too. The best among them was Ergeiz, Ogre Battle, Valkyrie Profile, Xenogears, and Legend of Dragoon. Ended up walking away with about a dozen games from that garage sale at $2 a piece.
About two years ago I was at a ghetto thrift store and saw a plastic storage tub with a a boxed SNES game in it. Upon further investigation it ended up being Breath of Fire II CIB. Funny enough, that wasn't even the best game in there. Upon digging further I ended up finding Earthbound and Shadowrun, both loose, but for $5 each I was not complaining.
Several summers ago I was at our local flea market on a Friday, which is a very slow day there and you typically do not find much stuff on that day. Some guy was selling a HUGE N64 lot with about 40 games and an Ice Blue console. There was almost not one bad game in the lot, which included games like Conker, the 2nd N64 Castlevania game, Mario Party 2, Smash, and a ton of other sought after titles. Asked him how much he wanted for the whole box. He said $60 and I was not going to argue.
My best CL score was for a fairly large SNES lot with about 20 games and a console. The lot included Lufia 2, Super Mario RPG, Super Metroid, Yoshi's Island, and a handful of other great titles. I ended up getting the whole lot, which was valued at around $400 at the time for $150.
-
3 long box PS1 games (Ridge Racer, NFL GameDay, and WrestleMania: The Arcade Game) for 2 bucks each.
Diablo: Hellfire expansion pack for a dollar.
Scarface: The World Is Yours for 2 bucks.
-
I bought an absolutely mint, complete copy of Link to the Past for the SNES for £22 from an online dedicated retro shop. This was in 2013 when SNES prices had already gone crazy and on eBay copies of the game in similar condition as mine were going for nearly £100. Couldn't believe they put it at such a low price.
Also a few months before that I got a boxed copy of Mega Man X for £20. Probably not quite a good a deal as it was missing the manual and not mint, but still pretty great.
-
I once made a trade on a comic message board I used to frequent before it became a ghost town. 20 or so X-Men comics for a fully-working PS2 with a few PS2 and PS1 games, memory cards, DVD controller, and all the hook-ups. (This was back when PS2 was still current). One of the games being Final Fantasy VII. And the comics I traded weren't old issues, just some common 90s issues.
Another time I came across a working Commodore 64 at Goodwill for $18, and came with a huge case of floppy disks of games (I did have to hunt down a power cord and floppy drive, though). Unfortunately it only worked for a few months before it died on me. But for $18, a few months of C64 is still a great deal!
Or getting an XBox 360, that I still have and use, from a local modder-guy for $100 back when they were still selling for $200 for the base model. I got a 20 GB hard drive, a wired official controller, hook-ups, a couple games, and a ridiculously long network wire with it. It wasn't modded, though, because I wanted my XBox Live Account. I went to him to mod my original Xbox, initially. I wanted it to play my PS1 and Dreamcast discs, because I was in a limited space at the time.
I also got a Pong unit, called The Wonder Wizard for about $30. Worked fine. It was the later model that had like 4 different game modes, not the original Wonder Wizard.
...well, it worked fine until my wife played a game with me, she pushed the serve button, and "CRACK!". The connection to the button broke. I have it all ghetto-rigged with some twist-ties to hold it together inside the controller, now. It works, and you can't see it since it's inside the controller.

Some wonderful, wonderful stories here, thank you all. I have a dozen or more decent stories of right place right time. A few stories of the ones that got away, but my best recent story is here.

Xbox, Xbox 360, all the xbox and xbox 360 games(besides 1) in my collection list, 4 xbox controllers, 2 360 controllers. for free ;)

Probably an Atari 2600 6 switch woody with 120 games for $10
-
Probably an Atari 2600 6 switch woody with 120 games for $10
Wow that's an awesome deal! Any uncommon carts in that lot?
My best deal happened a couple of years ago when I found Wayne's World on NES for $2.99 in a Play n Trade.
-
I got Earthbound brand new from Best Buy for $20 back in 1997 when they were blowing them out on clearance. Still have it to this day! If I would've known the game would've become a cult hit, I probably would've snagged the other 8 or so... ;D
One great deal that sticks out to me was from an auction house in LA back in 2012. It's mostly estate sales, so normally nothing game related, until one day. THE MOTHER LODE!! I was going berserk inside. One lot was about 60 CIB N64 games, perfect condition. Another lot was about 100 CIB SNES games, all the good ones, in perfect condition! (It ended up going for $1700 to someone else, I wish I snagged it to this day).
But, I did win one nice lot that day. It was an odd mixed lot:
• Xbox console
• Sega Genesis Model 1 with Sega CD model 1
• Lunar Eternal Blue (Sega CD)
• Vay (Sega CD)
• Dark Wizard (Sega CD)
• Atari 800 computer with mouse
• Turbo Duo console
• Chrono Trigger (SNES, cart only)
• Final Fantasy III (SNES, cart only)
• Around 50 CIB Atari 2600 games (including gate fold boxes)
• A bunch of random controllers, including a few huge flight sim ones
• Adventure Island II (NES)
• Strider (Genesis)
Probably some other stuff too, hard to remember. Got all that for $400!

Wow that's an awesome deal! Any uncommon carts in that lot?
My best deal happened a couple of years ago when I found Wayne's World on NES for $2.99 in a Play n Trade.
A few good ones like Spy Hunter, Tapper, Pengo, HERO, Cosmic Commuter, Snoopy, Track and Field, Frogger II, and some others. This was probably about 2001 or 2002 when retro game collecting was still in its relative infancy.
The story was it was first thing in the morning, like 8 oclock and we weren't even out for garage sales, just happened past one driving by and saw from the car the distinct look of a 2600 joystick peeking out of a box. When I saw the box it had the system and maybe 30 games and the woman said $10 for everything. Even that was great. When I picked up the box it felt heavier than it should and when I got it back to the car I realized there was another box under the first with another 30 or 40 games. Just as I realized this I heard the woman call from her house and she came out with another box with 50 or so games and told me to just take it so when I got it home it tallied just over a 120 games and IIRC there weren't many doubles either.
-
Vectex with games, at a community yard sale. Paid $20, probably saved about $250+ on the lot.
-
My best are Tales of Xillia 1 Collector's Edition for $2, and Cave Story 3D for $3.
-
I can't believe I never posted in this thread. I've got a few.
While the PS3 was still current gen, I bought a boxed system with no controller for $5 at a yard sale. They thought it was broken. I just pushed the hard drive in snug and did and A/V reset on it. Boom. It's still going strong.
I've bought Panic Restaurant on NES twice. Once for $4 and once for $3. That's bumping up against $400 right now.
I bought Caltron 6-in-1 for $5
I've been doing this for a long time though.
-
I'll probably have to go with the Saturn stuff I got.
Both Magic Knight Rayearth and Dragon Force were free. I found Albert Odyssey for about 30 dollars (complete) at a store. Usually, that game goes for a pretty penny.
-
Hard to say, but I guess getting Suikoden II in very good condition for 15 Dollars definitely wasn't that bad a deal - for whatever reason it had the same price as the first game. I got the original Version of Valkyrie Profile for the same price at the same store.
I got the PAL version of Shadow Hearts for 10 Euros in a dedicated video game store in my home town.
Aside from that I don't know or remember whether I made any really good deals.
