I'd like to get to know what people around here do when they aren't working, playing video games or hunting them down. Do you guys have any other hobbies/ interests?
Me? I like to build computers, overclock and such. I'm a big PC gamer, I also make youtube videos (involves editing + rendering) so I like to get the most out of my computer. Best bang for a buck. I've had my PC for quite a 3-4 years now and it's still a pretty solid build and can still keep up with games (upgraded gpu more recently).
I also like to work on cars. I bought my car brand new when I was pretty young and have put a little money here and there. After a few years of hunting deals for used parts. I've gotten a nice little set of mods for pretty cheap. It's got quite the ricey look, a lot of people don't like it but meh. I had fun working on the car. Where I'm moving the lights aren't legal anyways so they will rarely be lit. (Since the picture, it's been lowered 2 inches.) When i go to car shows. I leave the car unlit and let the people have their show, I'm not "That guy".

I also snowboard and am quite the adrenaline junkie. I go cliff jumping into water and such.
-
Wow, my hobbies will sound way more boring after @madmax's start (I really dig the night shot! It'd be pretty impressive even if it just lit up when you turned on/off your alarm! :P).
I'm much less flashy...
Much of my time is taken up by gaming, but here are other things I do (in order of frequency):
- workin' fulltime at the liberry
- taking a series of fashion construction class (jackets are next!)
- learnin' to cook
- just joined a gym finally after a long absence
- drawing occasionally (http://www.seeinsidefordetails.com) < sorry about the design... I wrote it over a decade ago, and it's in serious need of an overhaul
- graphic novels
Oh, and since I feel like I need to add an image of some sort, here's a drawing I did recently for a friend of his wife and cat:

Oh, also, I guess I like a bit of nice scotch every once in a while.
-
That's a great drawing! Man, I am so out of practice in my own drawing it makes me sad.
When I am not working and or playing/ collecting video games, my hobbies include:
Playing admin/moderator/editor/style-guide war-chief for this beast of a project. ;)
Playing bass guitar, I also made a custom aluminum pick-guard for it, with a sandblasted finish and one of my designs on it.
Over the last couple years I began snowboarding again, after a 4 -5 year dry spell. I only usually get about 1 good trip in a year though. Hopefully this year I can sneak in a few extra, especially since I plan on buying a new deck and bindings before this season begins.
I'm mildly-alright at playing disc golf.
I'm a table-top gamer, and spend Saturdays playing an old-old pen and paper RPG with my cousins and a few friends.
I do like to do artwork, though I am out of practice in my drawing. Most of the graphic design I've done lately has been site related, icons flyers, etc. Though, I do paint minis both for gaming and for display.

Also 2 years ago, I built my own arcade machine. The entire body shape and artwork is my own design. It runs off of an old PC with a modified version of Windows XP, the joysticks are wired into a special encoder and the trackball plugs into USB. It has a working marquee light and the screen is a 20" CRT monitor mounted vertically. I even installed a real coin door and wired it to take tokens for credits, I have a bowl full of tokens that I leave on top of the control panel. All in all, it took me about 3-4 months of solid work to finish it and it's beastly. I'm currently working on a tabletop Centipede machine too, based off of the body design of the original Centipede machines, complete with authentic controls.
-
@Scott, those minis and homemade arcade are so sweet. I'm just an beginner with soldering, and power machines freak me out, so it's way impressive that you designed and built that beautiful machine. And that's sweet about the tabletop time - I only have a few friends who do the pen and paper role-playing, but they never seem to take me seriously when I say I'd be interested in joining them... A boy's night, I guess ;)
-
Wow @desocietas you can draw :o I can draw good cartoons and I used to make comic strips by hand and then color them with flash for a friend but I could never imagine doing something of that caliber.
@scott , I had tried collecting minis but I have very unsteady hands and I can't paint them to the degree of detail I would like, so I gave that up (that and their prices sometimes 0.o ). that's a pretty sweet arcade machine you build there. Do you use it much or is it really just for display/bragging rights? :P
Come to whistler to snowboard :P Great mountain (not so great prices). To be honest my snowboarding has been on the low as well. I don't think I've been in 2 years now. I kind of slowed down when I went to college and when I was in highschool (Wow that was long ago) I did an idiotic huge jump and landed on my hand, it pushed my colar bone completely out of it's socket and I still haven't recovered (never will). I lost that season and then i started being too careful and it became a little less fun.
-
@desocietas Thanks! The theme and artwork/logo are all custom designed. The Marquee reads "SHMUP" after the Shoot 'em Up genre. In the original build, I didn't do any soldering at all, all the wiring is put together with quick disconnects or standard PC connections. After I moved it to my new place, I realized the amount of work it took to remove the control panel, so I soldered a 25 pin serial port in place to make the control panel unplug from the cabinet wiring. Soldering isn't that hard, it just takes patience and a steady hand. :)
In the time I've played P&P RPGs we've only had, maybe, three girls that were interested in playing. Only one of them was super into it, the other two lost interest pretty quickly. I'm guessing they didn't understand imagination usage. No big deal though, it is mostly a boy's night to get together and hangout... until 4am playing games ha.
@madmax I've been painting since I was a kid, prolly 10 or 11. Sometimes I look back at past paint jobs and it almost seems embarassing, ha. Like looking at a crayon drawing from pre-school. As for pricing, I don't like them either. I tend write it off as a "art material" in my mind to justify some of them. Especially if they are from something I don't play, but are so cool they beg to be worked on.
The SHMUP is currently in a back room, so it doesn't get to be displayed, and I totally claim bragging rights! The cab gets a decent workout, mostly vertical scrolling shooters, like Raiden, Strikers 1945 II, Gunbird 2, etc. But Horizontal games still look good on it, without seeming too small. Usually, I try to get a decent amount of play time in on it during the week, but right now one of my coin mechs is acting up, so I need to see what the problem is with that.
-
@madmax Looked up Whistler. Man that place looks so rad, too bad I doubt I'd afford a trip anytime soon.
-

I've really enjoyed the soldering I've done so far. I'll buy a kit or two from Maker Faire sometimes, and the last thing I made was this Pong Clock:

Fun stuff!
-
I listen to music. Lots. Of music.
http://rateyourmusic.com/~Foxhack
I also enjoy writing about stuff, usually games, but I really don't get to do that very often.
-
Building and racing bikes. I just sold this one after owning it forever, and sticking massive amounts of money in it. This thing was the definition of retarded fast, and thats coming from a guy who regularly rode a turbo Hayabusa.

-
I'm a fan of anything electronics related. I build computers for my friends, co-workers, etc. I've been doing that since high school. I also enjoy movies about as much as @foxhack enjoys music (and the sound aspect that goes along with it). I'm a commodities trader by profession so that also takes up a lot of my time.
I love to travel and have been to Sweden, Estonia, Denmark and Grand Cayman Island over the past several years. I try to get out of the country at least once a year. I'm planning a trip to the Philippines next year so I might not get out of the US in 2011. It's going to be a big trip (and pricy). I'll probably spend a week or so in Japan in 2013.
I also have an active social life (between my job and friends that aren't into video games). I'm not really into clubs anymore but I'm still rarely home on the weekends. As soon as college football starts up I'll be even busier between hosting parties and going to OU games :)
I'm also a member of the Oklahoma City Retro Gamers Society. It's only about a year old and we've been trying to expand our membership base. I'm not the founder but I'd say I'm a founding member. That doesn't take up much time now but I could see it really growing and requiring more time in the future.
I bought my first house this year so that's also been a big time sink. It's a new house but you wouldn't believe how much time you can spend just upgrading things (painting every singly wall for example).
I love to cook and I love wine. I almost went to culinary school in Pasadena right after I graduated from College. I'm still interested in it but I have a great job that I enjoy so making that switch is unlikely.
@madmax You wouldn't happen to know how to remove the center console cup holder door of a G35 coupe would you? I broke mine last week and it's driving me crazy.
-
@darko I could probably figure it out with pictures. If not, the G35 is a popular car to mod and thus probably has a forum somewhere online with How tos. The thing with new cars is that everything is made to look nice and fit nicely together but then sometimes you have to take most of the dash apart to get to something.
What kind of computer do you have? Mines pretty old now. Quad Q6600 @3.4ghz, 8gb ram, 460 (1gb) with slight Overclock...
I'm a pretty big traveler,I was raised travelling because of my fathers job and now I can't seem to stay planted in one place. Just now I moved across Canada from Montreal to BC. This Christmas I am going to Dubai for 3-4 weeks. I haven't been in 2 years..I've been there more times than I can count, hehe. I've been to Australia, South Africa, Bahrain, Egypt, French Polynesia, States, Europe and others I can't think of off the top of my head. My girlfriend has never really traveled so I plan on doing everything all over again with her (Thus why Dubai is lined up for xmas)
@nophix
Sweet bike! I've been staying away from bikes. Ideally I'd want a ninja 650 but I know that I would kill myself with a bike. I'm a fast driver and although I always take the time to assess risk and don't drive recklessly, it's too easy to blip the gas and be going 250 (km/h) with a bike. I can say I would be responsible but in the end, I wouldn't :P

Lucky girl!

Traveling and experiencing the world is an important thing for me. She's been to Europe but with her school when she was younger. Schools don't let you experience a country. They force you to go through the touristy crap. Although that stuff should be done, there is always so much more.
A few months ago she flew over to Montreal and I drove us to Niagara falls. When you're just out of season (We were 1 week before "the season" started) and we payed pennies for a kings suite at the Hilton Hotel :D
I didn't mention this above but I am also attempting to make a video game. Nothing crazy or complex, using UDK (unreal Development kit) and trying to make a little game. If I manage to make it, It'll be one of those games for $3-4. I'm stuck on the programming aspect of the thing though. I've got the idea. I know how to make 3d models, meshes and such. Programming the game and such aspects are the ones which are making it hard for me to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
-
I mostly collect DVD's & Blu-Ray's. I have a collection of over 400 movies. I don't even want to think how much money was put in it! :D
Last time I counted, I had only a shelf and a half of dvd's, and I was already at 1000$. Now, I have 4 complete shelves, and one half full....
-
I tinker here and there with various projects. I'm the technical director at my church; all the little upgrades and such I do to the audio/video system could almost be counted as a hobby in itself. I also run sound for a barbershop gospel quartet that sometimes sings with a piano and string bass - built and maintain the sound system that is used when we do a bit of traveling.
I also do a little bit of web design on the side, but that's mostly constrained to HTML/CSS stuff. I'd say my other biggest hobby (outside of games) is woodworking. I made my coffee table a while back, got a few other small projects in the works.
-
That coffee table is so awesome.
-
^^^
I second that statement !
-
I'm of course a gamer, or I wouldn't be here. I prefer classic games to modern games a lot of the time, and I'm a collector.
Outside of that, I have a few hobbies:
-Comic Book Collector - I'm nearly 30 and I've been collecting comics as far back as I can remember. My dad collected comics so I was exposed at a very young age. I'm most a DC & Marvel guy and always have been. I'm not into Japanese Manga, though.
-Metal-Head - Since I was about 11 years old I've been a metal-head. Started off on Metallica & Megadeth and it just grew from there.
-Sci-Fi & Horror Movie Fan - I'm really, really into sci-fi movies. Love me some Star Trek, Serenity, Stargate, Sliders, Robocop, Terminator, Alien, Robocop...you name it.
-Horror Movie Fan - Admittedly, I seemed to be a lot more into it when I was younger than I am now. But I still really enjoy the classics. I particularly love the 70s & 80s gorefests, and zombie-flicks.
-
This thread came back from the dead.
I don't remember what free time is. I have a 3 year old. That takes all my time. I'm kidding. It's not bad.
As for hobbies, mine is Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. I've been training for about 4 years and still love it. I love coaching and helping train guys to fight MMA. It's a great sport. I hate getting punched in the face though, so I stick to the wrestling and Jiu Jitsu.
-
I'm also pretty big into movies. I've been collecting movies since the mid 90's and while I've ditched most of my VHS stuff, I've accumulated about 800 DVDs and 200 blu-rays since I got my first DVD player in 1999.
-
Man, I'm never getting rid of my VHSs. Some of the best 80s and 90s films ever I have in a large VHS collection. I feel it's not different than retro-gaming. As long as your VCR works, there's nothing wrong with owning VHSs. I do have DVDs of course, too.
-
Man, I'm never getting rid of my VHSs.
I second that.
As for me, i love movies, especialy horror from the 80s 90s, i posted a pic in "game room" thread, though not everything is on this picture.
I love pinball machines, i used to go to the arcade room often, i'd like to have one in my apartment one day, but this cost a lot.
-
Let's see...
I definitely share the "hating getting punched in the face" hobby with Turf :P
I'm another "Adrenaline Junky" & like fast down-hill skiing, sky-diving, bungee-jumping...but...conversely...I also love chess, I'm an avid reader, and enjoy spending time at home w/ the g/f & Shadow (my dog) and not doing much of anything specific, sometimes!
I'm very interested in (and somewhat knowledgeable about) other culures, foreign languages, and the originations of words (etymology), too.
As much as I love gaming, I've found that, at times, I've spent more time reading about all things gaming (and about gaming's history) than I have spent actually *playing* the games.
And I like pina coladas...and walks on the beach...
;)
-
When I have the time, I like painting and taking photos. Languages are my other huge love - not just practical stuff but studying (and reading!) ancient Egyptian and other lost tongues :)
-
As much as I love gaming, I've found that, at times, I've spent more time reading about all things gaming (and about gaming's history) than I have spent actually *playing* the games.
I have that problem too! Makes me mad when I had planned on beating a game and end up reading forums and history all day! :-\
-

Seriously...where the hell does all of that time go so quickly? :P
-
I do that too. But I also end up reading plot synopsis of games I either started playing and never had time to finish, or have never had and they are either super spendy or hard to find.
-
I cant believe I havent responded here before.
My favorite hobby (even before gaming) is my Harley. I love the feel of being out on it. Its just peace, fuck the world.
I used to sell hot wheels about a dozen years ago and I found a favorite car : Rigor Motor. Now I actively collect every single paint style of the car (There are 21 styles now I believe).
Television wise is CSI. I have been watching since the pilot aired and still love it. I own every season on DVD (except my money situation atm hasnt let me buy 2 of this season yet)
Last, but not least, is body piercing. I got my first ear piercing in 1989 I think and a few years later I got my first couple of body piercings (eyebrow and nipples). Currently I have a 6 gauge helix, 2 16 gauge tragus, 16 gauge oracle with attachment, 14 gauge industrial, 2 4 gauge lobes, 14 gauge eyebrow, 12 gauge nasal bridge, 12 gauge septum, 12 gauge tongue, 14 gauge tongue web (the area under the tongue), 12 gauge labret, 8 gauge nipple (one got ripped out) and an 8 gauge navel.
-
Apart from playing games I:
-Go to gaming, comic and anime conventions (PAX, Comic-Con, local conventions)
-Read books, graphic novels, comic books and mangas
-Listen to a lot of music (Favorite Band: Nightwish)
-Draw and write (even though I ain't that good)
-

I want a bike so bad. Each spring the get the itch but never pull the trigger.
-
The GF and I are talking about at least getting endorsements this spring/summer. I doubt I'll be able to afford a bike around then though.

"endorsements"?
-
Motorcycle endorsement for the driver's license. I dunno how it works in other States, but in Michigan you have to have a driver's license "endorsed" for motorcycle riding.

Ah, gotcha'.
Yep - same here in NJ (boat/motorcycle/bus endorsements, etc).
I think that the only time that it's separated here is for tractor-trailer (18-wheeler) drivers. My dad used to drive them, and he had/needed an "Articulated" license for that...
-
Back when I initially got my license in 92, the only thing you had to do to get your endorsement was click the box. Now you have to take a seperate written and driving test. The tests werent that bad but you do need to study to get a few of the written parts correct (a lot of motorcycle issues dont apply to people in cages).

Would a "one-handed" motorcycle be completely impossible?
Or...
-
Yes it could be possible. There is an American made brand (can not think of the name of it atm) that makes automatic transmission bikes. If you pair that with a trike kit, it could work. There would be no need for a clutch and a gear shift so you could have the front brake lever and the rear brake pedal. With the trike kit, turning would be easier with one hand and you would not have to stand up when stopped so holding up the bike would be like holding up a car when stoppped. Ill look up the name of that company.
-
Dont know why I forgot the name .... just think of Metroid! The brand is Ridley. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-RIDLEY-AUTOGLIDE-TT-AUTOMATIC-MOTORCYCLE-AUTO-GLIDE-INSPECTED-WE-FINANCE-/330839813223?pt=US_motorcycles&hash=item4d0796ec67
It would take some work to get it totally street ready for one hand but I would love to see it if you did it!
Another faster to finish option could just be a Can Am Spyder (Which I want one in the future anyhow). http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2010-Can-Am-Spyder-RT-S-SM5-Loaded-Exhaust-3-Wheeler-Cover-Serviced-/290831773746?pt=US_motorcycles&hash=item43b6ecb032 Some of these are automatics too.
-
One more option (once you hit the lottery) is this : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T-REX-/321045331812?pt=US_motorcycles&hash=item4abfcaff64
-
Thanks for the links, Soera :)
That Ridley (and that one requiring a winning lottery ticket:) both look rather interesting & tempting.
I can still drive sticks/standard cars, but, it would probably make anyone/everyone seeing me doing it rather nervous (then again, I guess that anyone seeing me driving (even an automatic car) one-handed whilst lighting/smoking a cigarette wouldn't be real happy about it, either)!
Do you know what the laws are/aren't concerning it being LEGAL to drive/operate a cycle 1-handed?
-
There shouldnt be any discriminating laws about 1h motorcycle driving ... but the useful aspect of doing it without the options I mentioned are beyond imagination. A manual bike has clutch/gear shift on one side and front brake/rear brake on the other side. The throttle however is on the same side as the brake so it wouldnt be possible to do with just one hand cause the clutch would pop. You would, at minimum, have to get an automatic. Turning and driving with one hand would be situational too. Ive seen people drive with one hand resting on their leg but thats only down straight roads (normally on the highway).
-
My other hobbies besides collecting systems is building Arcade machines I build them and sell them for a good price, but the odd time I keep one for myself >_>. I also go to conventions and lecture on Nintendo and its untold history which they do not speak of.
I also skateboard and travel a lot but mostly to find consoles that I have never heard of. ie. The Funstation 3 imported from panama by myself :P

Makes sense :)
On-topic, again...another thing that I 'collect' *could* be tattoos 8)
-
If you could get proper temporary tattoos that looked fantastic and then completely faded away after a few months I'd have loads, but there's nothing I'd really want to wear on my skin *forever*, so I just have to admire everyone else's instead :)

Oh.
I get it...
...You must be one of *those* people -
the kind that thinks *BEFORE* you act; huh?!
-
Not often enough! :D
-
-Draw and write (even though I ain't that good)
Hey, no one gets good unless they're doin' it. Ain't called a "practice" for nothin' ;) I don't draw enough these days, but I enrolled in a new art class for the Spring so hopefully it'll get me going again.
I do that too. But I also end up reading plot synopsis of games I either started playing and never had time to finish, or have never had and they are either super spendy or hard to find.
I do that for movies that I'm too scared to see or don't want to waste my time watching (it's so hard setting aside 2 hours). I'm totally fine with reading the synopses for splatter films but can't stand to watch them.
-
I actually have 2 tattoos as well. Its kind of depressing. The one that I traded a $10 pizza for has lasted almost 10 years and looks like the day it was done (In someone's kitchen). The one I paid $120 for is about 3 years old and most of the ink has worked its way out and pisses me off cause the guy that did it was out of town for weeks after he finished and now its "too late" to have him repair his ink without charging me again.
-
Oh my, so much fun stuff to respond to:
Motorcycles
I love riding! I've been riding pretty consistently since 2001, and although my schedule never allows it, I'd like to teach the MSF beginning rider course over the summer.
I just sold a Magna that I had been holding on to for a while, and now just have a Triumph Sprint ST which is the best thing I've ever ridden. So far.
I'd second the vote for a can-am spyder, or harley trike for 1H riding. I've known a few guys who rode 1h, and they all rode trikes and loved it. There was one of them who had a highly modified ninja 250, that had throttle and front brake in the normal place (right hand), but the front and rear brakes were linked, so they activated from the same lever, and then had a little half lever in the same place that controlled the clutch so he could pull in one or both at the same time. It took some practice finding the friction point all with one hand, but he had it down. BUT, he said he much preferred the trike, since it wasn't nearly as much work to keep the thing upright and monkey with controls. Relaxing, was the term he used, as I recall.
Tattoos
I feel the same way kimimi! When I was 18, I thought it would be the coolest thing in the world to get a barcode tattooed on my neck. (This was pre-agent 47, btw). My friends/family very vocally let me know that this was a dumb idea, and looking back, I'm really glad I didn't do it. Although, it wasn't the sparring from others that stopped me. I thought that I could get it so when I got scanned at a store it would say like "SUPER AWESOME DUDE, $1000000" on the register, but it turns out that's not how UPC codes work. Thank goodness QR codes hadn't been invented yet(oops, thanks wikipedia, they were invented, I just hadn't heard of them).
I'm curious about henna, though. That lasts 1-3 weeks, but it only comes in one color: reddish brown. Might be a cool way to test drive a tattoo.
I saw an article many moons ago about researchers looking to implant E-ink displays subdermally. I was ALL over that. A tattoo that I can change whenever I want? YES PLEASE. Also the capability to display information. First in line. On the left forearm, please.
Arcade
I've built a four player arcade controller, but I haven't had the motivation to actually build the cabinet for it. So now it is just a monitor and the controller sitting on a rolling cart. You can play it, but she aint pretty.
I also find it counter-intuitive that pinball machines aren't cheaper. I mean, they weren't EVERYWHERE, but I feel like for their size, and relative niche market, they shouldn't still be THOUSANDS of dollars. I want it to be like CRT TV's, where people almost pay you to take them. "UGH, CAN ANYONE GET RID OF THIS PINBALL MACHINE, IT'S JUST TAKING UP SPACE" Where are those Craigslist ads?
-
Wow you guys all have exciting hobbies! Other than video games my hobbies are sleeping and playing solitaire. :P
-
I really don't have time or money for anything besides my games.
-
Hey Soera, I'm into piercing too. :)
At least, I used to be... I was going to start piercing part-time while doing my photography full-time, but then I had to move to the middle of nowhere... Now I'm a manager with a corporation that puts a strong emphasis on a "wholesome" image - so no more piercings for me. I no longer have any of my facial piercings, and had to take out the more "extreme" ones in my ears too. :(
Aside from video games, I'm also a huge film geek (horror, silent, Criterion, artsy-fartsy).
-
Wow! There are a lot of motorcycle enthusiasts on here. I am another one. Put me in the Kawasaki camp. I've actually gone without a cage (car) for about one and a half years.
I collect comics.
I don't collect but enjoy movies/TV shows? and music. I used to have a decent collection of each of those. But have become a full digital convert.
-
cooking
photography (not as much any more i need to get a new camera)

-
Keeping myself in shape by walking and playing with my dogs.
If its mechanical or digital and I have the tools and resources, I usually tinker with it.
Big cinema admirer and see the movies a lot.
Milk the internet relentlessly for info on strange things.
Involved with my brother on reconstructing nearly 3000 years worth of family history.
Play board and card games with friends.
Casual follower of WWII, Egyptian, Roman & Greek history.

I'm pretty much a giant dork across the board...
- Absolutely rabid film geek, particularly when it comes to foreign films and anime. I keep a profile on Film AF under the same username as I go by here, if anyone's really curious, but the collection is sadly half what it used to be, as my ex and I were together for 7 years and had joined all our stuff together, so everything was basically chopped 50/50 when things ended. Getting it back into shape, little by little, but it's a slow process.
- Drawing, painting, and graphic design, and I was a design major in college (who didn't finish). I haven't gotten to do nearly as much as I'd like the past couple years, mostly due to life not providing me with enough space, and school really taught me to appreciate working on larger pieces.
- Collecting music, mainly various genres of experimental, industrial, noise, and dark electronic stuff. I'm pretty rabid for vinyl, and that's almost exclusively what I buy these days, as I find it makes me more discriminating about what I pick up. Like the movies, this collection was also split in half post-breakup. I don't mention it much to people anymore, but I'm also a former goth/industrial club DJ, and did that weekly from around 1997-2003 - if you know where to look, there are pics of me wearing vinyl pants floating around online :p
- Building up what little hi-fi I can afford. I'm not the type who buys into snake oil about cables and other silly tweaks, but I've put together a pretty decent system on a budget, the highlight of which is a pair of Focal Chorus 706-V speakers; they're arguably the single most expensive thing in my apartment, which is kind of nuts to think about. Started building my own cables a few months back too, which has been surprisingly easy, and a lot of fun. I'm hoping I can maybe do a dedicated stereo setup at some point, ideally something focused around a vintage Marantz amp and Rega turntable, buuut... not in the cards right now.
- Building computers. I've been doing the DIY thing since I was 12, and apart from my laptop, have never owned a pre-built system. I also have a big interest in retrocomputing, particularly old SGI hardware, but lack the space to do much more than read about it. Mainly running Windows 7 these days, but I have a lot of affection for Gentoo and Arch Linux, too.
- Synthesizers. As with most things, my interest outweighs my budget and living space, but I currently own an Alesis Ion, along with a healthy dose of software. This is probably a collection that will grow in the next year or two, though. I make music mainly for my own enjoyment, so it's strictly amateur hour.
- Reading comics and manga, though this has slowed waaaay down over the years as my tastes have veered further away from superhero stuff and into more twisted, serious territory. I'm mostly into a lot of Vertigo stuff, but I dig my fair share of seinen like Blade of the Immortal and Gantz, and I'm an absolutely rabid fan of under-appreciated gems like Queen & Country and Poison Elves.
That's more or less what occupies 98% of my free time, anyway :)

I don't have a big collection of movies but I do enjoy them.
I'm also a big pro wrestling fan and collect pro wrestling dvds.

What kind of stuff? Current? Old-school?
I'm a big pro-wrestling fan, too. I still keep up with it, but I'm a bigger fan of the 80s through the early 2000s. All that stuff was fantastic and I've been building up a lot of my DVD collection with that kind of stuff. Mostly WWF and WCW with a little bit of TNA, never was a big fan of ECW.

I watch a lot of older stuff from the 80's through the early 2000's on youtube since that is what I grew up on.
I don't watch WWE right now because the product is boring to me so most of my dvd collection is indy stuff from Ring of Honor, Pro Wrestling Guerilla, Chikara, and TNA.

So sad. The piercings suited you much better than the wholesome look! :)
It's a pretty lame state of affairs when tattoos and piercings can still disqualify you for a job in 2013, even in a city like PDX.

I agree with that statement. We are no longer living in the stone ages and people do different things ... what if having a cell phone was grounds for losing/not obtaining a job? Would people get rid of their cell phone? Hell no they wouldnt. Appearance isn't everything. I would have assumed that a boss would be more interested in things like work ethic, skill in said job, attitude, etc instead of whether a person had a fucking earring in their nose or not. My step son's friend is 17 and has his ears sized to a 2 gauge. He is interested in joining the Marines. They simply told him he has to have his ear holes fully closed before he would be allowed entrance. Seriously? They dont mind the holes you get in your body from a fucking machine gun shooting at you but if you do it yourself with a piece of jewelery, you are not worthy of their acceptance.
Sorry if I sound bitter but Ive been fighting the piercing battle with jobs since 93 when I joined the Navy. I had my ears pierced and an eyebrow piercing. I got permanently barred from the cafeteria (chow hall) cause I had a tie tack in my ear one day. 20 years now ... people still haven't gotten a clue. Its sad and ridiculous how petty people and corporations can be.

Completely agree with this. While not a piercing fan myself, I've never understood why a piercing might disqualify someone from being a completely competent worker.

the reason for the army not allowing piercing is that to them it not "clean and proper" and vary "disrespectful", respect & C&P are vary important to army and they are vary strict on what counts

I think you're missing the point, htimreimer. The fundamental issue being raised is that piercings, tattoos, weird hair, etc. doesn't make someone less respectable, capable, or clean and proper, let alone unsuitable for a position, even in the military.
More often than not, this is all down to little more than a generation gap. Middle-aged people and seniors who've been in lockstep with the status quo for decades, lack any sense of themselves, and are incapable of seeing merit in anything that's too far outside the bland, conservative utopia they've pieced together in their heads.

That coffee table is so awesome.

@scott, is there any way you could teach us how to build that cab?
I've been wanting to make one for a while, but never got around to looking into it,
