Title: overrated & underrated games
Post by: htimreimer on March 26, 2013, 05:00:28 pm
name one underrated game and one overrated and why

underrated - alien colonial marines: from videos, reviews and lets plays i've seen, i know what is the problem with this game, its has duke nukem forever syndrome, DNFS is any game that has been in development for so long that by the time it released, its outdated, these games usually get panned by people because they expect more than it can deliver

overrated - skyrim, this game is mediocre at best and the only thing that's amazing about this game is the mod community, it rivals games like farming simulator and KSP  (https://kerbalspaceprogram.com/) on who has the biggest mod community

Underrated - Trojan. Its such a goofy game but its actually kind of fun. Ive never heard anyone other than myself actually liking the game though.

Overrated - Mega man 2. I cant tell how many times Ive heard people mention it as the best MM game but, to me, its actually the worst one out there. It has approximately 3-4 hours of game to anyone with any sort of gaming abilities regardless if they have never played it ever. It just doesnt have the challenge of the first game or the cool factor/new stuff that the following ones do.

i have never played mm2 but going by how many people talk about it being the best, it probably is overrated

Final Fantasy VII is the most overrated game in the history of games. People talk about it as the end-all be-all RPG.

As far as underrated, where do we start? Now days its cool to like the undiscovered gems. Metal Storm and Shatterhand are getting all the attention they deserve. What's left? I don't think Adventure of Lolo gets the love that it should.

Honestly I'm tired of the whole "over/underrated" thing. I don't really care what games people think are better/ worse than others, or if they are "overrated" or "underrated" for that matter. If someone suggests a game to me, based on the fact that I might like it, I'll listen. Like when everyone here was talking about SMT games and Persona. I checked it out and Persona 3 FES turned out to be a game I really enjoyed. Do I care that everyone else likes/hates it? No, not really.

We talked about this with Earthbound a few months ago. People used to say, "It's so underrated and such a good game. It's unlike anything I've played before". And now people are saying "OMG, the game has a huge price tag and I can't afford it! That game is so overrated." Seriously, it's a load of crap. I really think it has more to do with the game being overpriced than overrated. I've never played it, so I can't base an opinion on it. But I do know eventually I want to own and play it, regardless of if it's supposedly overrated or not.

I also love when people call out games, that are proven to be classics. And since there is a consensus that the game is good or even great, or if a game has gained popularity and become mainstream-ish it's "overrated", just because a lot of people agree on the subject. Or if there is a game that should have received more attention, but didn't because of poor marketing, niche appeal or low print runs they are "underrated". Please.

Overrated and underrated is thrown around so much any more that they don't hold hold any meaning. A lot of people like the SMT games, does that make them overrated? The Game Boy sold MILLIONS and an entire generation has fond memories of playing their video games on the go for the 1st time ever on a GB, does that mean it's Overrated? In that case, since we only have a handful of SHMUPers here, does that mean SHMUPs are underrated? Or since a game is so niche, that it lacks wide appeal, that automatically means it's underrated?

I don't read reviews, watch things like the AVGN or listen to what other people say about a game, until I've actually played it. Because I don't care. I'll buy and play any game that fits in the genres I like, and if I think it's crap afterwards then that's my opinion. Some other dude might think the game is perfect and he's entitled to that opinion.  And if I dig it, and I think people of the same tastes might dig it, I'll suggest it.

But Overrated and Underrated is a tag, like Hardcore Gamer or Casual. It's meaningless.

No, it's panned because it's not a very good FPS. It's starts out well enough but it's all downhill from there (apart from the one bit where they recreate the set used in Aliens sentry turret/"That's inside the room!" scene), culminating in a final boss fight that ripped off a Code Veronica midboss and didn't even do that very well. The plot makes no sense and is full of people making stupid decisions (by either military or brodude "No man behind!" standards) just as an excuse to get you shooting at more aliens.

Sometimes people do jump on the hype train and expect too much... sometimes people call a game bad because it's a bad game :)

I love that game.  The only knock on it is there's damn near no replay value.  I think I can blow through it in 10 minutes or so now.  Well, back when I played it alot.

Underrated
Journey To Silius
Easily the best run-and-gun game on the NES after Contra.  And nobody ever discusses this game.

Runner up:
Muramasa: The Demon Blade
One my favorite games on the Wii -- harshly criticized upon release (it has it's faults, I admit), but simply a beautiful, immensely fun and addictive action platformer.

Overrated
Mortal Kombat
Fun for its time due to the novelty, rather than the gameplay.  Most of characters had the same basic moves and all that set them apart was the sprites and special moves.

So opinions don't matter, and we shouldn't discuss them?

...then why have a forum and discuss games at all?

Scott's post pretty much sums up my personal line of thinking, but I like to cause trouble!

Overrated Genre: The RPG. There are so many RPGs out there that absolutely suck. I get why so many people flock to the genre now - because they felt left out back in they day when their friends were playong racing games, fighting games, sports games, etc. I love RPGs. I'm an only child so, when I wasn't at a friend's house dominating them at Street Fighter or something, I tended to play RPGs because I could fall into the story without needing to have a group of friends around. I tell the story to prove that I totally get the draw, but it's like everyone and their dog puts the whole genre on a pedestal because of a few amazing titles. There are plenty of other genres out there that are just as satisfying to play.

Underrated Genre: Modern Racing Games. Seriously, have you seen Burnout Paradise? It's fun. Even last gen there were a ton of great looking racing games. Need for Speed Underground anyone? One of the best arcade style racers I've ever played. Too many people hate on sports titles and I feel like many people lump racing into the sports genre, or at least dismiss them for similar reasons.

Rant: Nobody should ever bitch and moan about sports games. If a quarter of the people who complain about them actually sat down and played one now and then, the world would be a better place. News flash...some of them are really fun. Just because you're not good at something doesn't mean it's bad.

I actually really like Racing games. NFS: Underground still gets some decent playtime and I loved Burnout 3 and Revenge... I have still not picked up Burnout Paradise, but that's because I only ever see PS3 copies, and I really would prefer a 360 copy.

Racing is one of my favorite genres. To be honest, I have always felt a little odd that my two favorite genres are racing and rhythm. If only we could combine them.

I will do a Dreamcast specific post.

Underrated - Chu Chu Rocket

Overrated - Soul Calibur

i don't hate sports game and i think some of them are fun but i do have one problem with the sports genre, most sports franchises don't improve over time, a lot of them are the same game just with a new number, same graphics, music and physics, no improvements or chance taking, just the same game over and over with no reason to buy them

I would disagree with this. Pick up any sports franchise for 2013 then compare this to 2009. They will have major improvements. Year-to-year tere won't be much. But it does add up after a few years.

thats why i said most not all sports games, some sports franchises like MLB do take chances & has improve over time and PGA has done the same thing to an extent but then you got franchises like madden who rarely take chances or improve on the previous game

Underrated: Zone of the Enders and Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner. Way, way better 3D action game than God of War or Devil May Cry. Hideo Kogima should have made more action games.

Overrated: Halo and Halo 2. Fun, but people talk about these games like they revolutionized video games forever when there have been FPS games that had been doing the same thing for years.

Halo did do some stuff different. The biggest thing it added was enemy AI. They were more than mindless drones. They used tactics to try to kill you. Halo was a game changer.

Underrated:  Tribes, in it's various iterations.  I love that game.  Huge open worlds, unique weapons. vehicles and equipment, loadouts, and heavily moddable.  I don't understand why it has really never succeeded in all of the attempts to resurrect it.

Overrated: And it pains me to say this: Gran Turismo.  I mean, it was the best selling game on PS3 before GTA V, and if you add Prologue, and the XL edition, probably a better selling game.  It's deep, has loads of playmodes, but really...isn't that fun.  I like it, I've played a ton of it, but I'm not sure what compels me to play it.  And in terms of it being a simulation, the collisions are laughable.

blipcs76 you are awesome! Journey to Silius is one of my favorite games of all time and I agree MK is incredibly overrated especially compared to other fighters at the time...
So i'll make my picks different
Underrated-Duke Nukem Forever... Yes I said it, I enjoyed it. It definitely has it's flaws, the physics puzzles are lame, the difficulty spikes, the graphics, and some of the jokes are lame as well, all that aside though, I did enjoy it, I mean I beat the game because I wanted to, and I had fun with it.
Overrated-Marvel VS Capcom 3, AWFUL, too button-masher friendly, the second one was like that as well but it at least required some skill for competitive play. It seems like Capcom just "dumbed down" the MVC series with each iteration, the first one was a six-button fighter with like 20 fighters but was decently balanced, the second one went to a four button layout with a huge roster and not balanced at all, but the third one is again a four button fighter with one button acting as basically the "I'll beat the game for you" mode... Terrible

They also opened up the world of online multiplayer gaming for home consoles. Dreamcast did it before, successfully. But the Dreamcast didn't have nearly as large of a fanbase, and it was dead in the water by then.

But more than your point or my own. The reason I love those games so much is the story. It plays-out like a sci-fi blockbuster movie that just keeps you on the edge of your seat, especially Halo 2. Slick graphics, great voice-overs, and stellar soundtrack add to that feeling, too. And I loved in Halo 2 how you saw the story from both Master Chief's and The Arbitur's perspectives.

I liked them both as well, but I failed to see what the big deal was back when they were released. The online was cool, but multiplayer on console FPS games had already been done very well by many other titles before Halo. Again, i am no Halo hater, I just felt underwhelmed by the whole game after hearing friends, media, and everyone else rave about it. Perhaps my expectations were aimed too high.

Not really, the Xbox really managed to do it world wide, taking a few tips from the CD-i more than the Dreamcast as well.
