Title: Whats your favorite series?
Post by: scott on September 10, 2011, 12:36:31 am
Everyone plays favorites, and most everyone has a series they hold in higher regard than all the rest.

I'm pretty sure you all can tell mine is Castlevania, but what's yours?

I think mines pretty obvious as it's all i talk about on here :P

(Final Fantasy)

I'm pretty sure I've said the back story but here goes. I was living at my g-mas because my father had been in a near fatal accident overseas and couldn't take care of me. She got some family member to lend me his snes and a few games to keep me distracted. He had zelda, mario and FFII. I beat zelda and mario but had never heard of Final Fantasy. I picked up the game and started playing it and was pretty much hooked. I left before i got to finish and ever since then I've loved Final Fantasy games.

I would have to say Metal Gear.

Good question... I realize that I own a lot of franchises... How many games constitutes a series?
Looking at my collection, looks like I have:
Broken Sword, Dragon Quest, Etrian Odyssey, FF, Golden Sun, Ace Attorney, Professor Layton, Rune Factory, Persona, other SMT titles, Star Ocean...
Is a franchise anything over 3 titles?

Well anything with sequels would be a series. Also, I tend to interchange "series" and "franchise". Maybe I should reword the question....

I have to pick just one?

Nope, can't do it.

Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pac-Man, among others.

:) I'm in the same boat.
I can maybe narrow it down to Persona, Ace Attorney, and Dragon Quest.

King's Quest and Ys

Actually, Castlevania is on top. But also Metal Gear and Zelda in no particular order. Of course, I do love some Final Fantasy too.... dammit

King's Quest and Ys

@pceslayer I've been thinking of picking up another Ys after playing through most of Ys Seven.  Thoughts on a definitive Ys title?
Title: Re: Whats your favorite series?

Ys II  complete on PC  is probably the definitive Ys game in the series, but it doesn't play anything like the newer Ys games. Most people don't care for the run-n-bump style simplicity of the first few Ys games and are pretty much instantly turned off.

So difinitive is the PC remake Ys I & II Complete(PC) and runners up are Ys Book I & II  (TGCD/WiiVC) and Ys I & II Chronicles (PSP)

If you find you're not a fan of the run-n-bump, give Oath in Felghana a try, its a remake of Ys III which was more action oriented by nature and in turn the remake plays just like 7.

Cool; incidentally, I already have Oath in Felghana in my possession through GameFly, so I'll be sure to give it a try before sending it back (I haven't been good about actually playing my GameFly rentals lately, unfortunately).  I was wondering about Ys I & II, but noticed that a version had been put out on the DS, then another on the PSP... got confused by that, so I just jumped in with the later Ys Seven title after seeing the positive reviews.  Thanks for the advice!

1. Sonic the Hedgehog
2. Mario Bros.
3. Final Fantasy

Easy question. Metal Gear, ever since I played Metal Gear Solid when I was younger.

I was also big into Syphon Filter, but the series got bad quick, and I haven't played the newest ones yet. Might as well throw Donkey Kong (Country) out there while I'm at it. Obviously, there's Mario and Zelda among several others.

Yea the DS release is pure shite compared to the PSP release. I believe the source for the PSP version is Ys Complete where the DS version someone pulled it out of their ass.

So hard to narrow it down to only one...I love different one's for different things.

1. Mario - simply put, just the best fun I've ever had playing a video game. I love everything from Super Mario Bros 2 all the way to Super Mario Galaxy 2. Also, New Super Mario Bros on the DS is a perfect title.

2. Zelda - These were the games I played as a kid that have made me such a puzzle solver/explorer of games today. Wind Waker is one of my top 5 games of all time.

3. Halo - Not only is the multiplayer just awesome, but the story is so well written and the campaign has such deep cinematic sequences. You can really tell true gamers made the series. Let's hope 343 studios carries on that tradition.

4. Mario Kart - I feel like this is different from Mario games in that it's racing, but it's my favorite kind of racing. Watch out for that Blue Shell!!!

5. Metal Slug - The best run 'n gun game ever, I could play this game for hours on end. Yes, better than Contra...and I love Contra.

Sorry to be long-winded and choose 5, but there was just no way I could select a single franchise.

If I had to pick just one it would probably be Metal Gear, with Final Fantasy coming in a close second.

Harvest Moon is probably my favorite, although they've gotten really repetitive in the last 5 years or so...also lots of love to Shin Megami Tensei, Layton, Zelda, and Ace Attorney.

My husband's: Resident Evil. No question. We have more than one chainsaw controller in the house.

@amauriel Have you already preordered Tale of Two Towns?
I feel the same about the games getting repetitive, so I normally wouldn't bother preordering, but that damn alpaca pre-order bonus is such a tease!

Oh man, Harvest Moon sucks you in with super cute bonuses...

Harvest Moon and Shin Megami Tensei in the same sentence? I never thought I'd see the day!

Heh, I'm right there with @amauriel... but she's definitely got me beat in her collection of HM titles... I've played a lot of them, but don't necessarily have them in my collection.  She's got me beat in the SMT series, too.

I've never played a Harvest Moon title. Which one would you guys recommend as my first go? I've just never been too interested in the series for some reason.

I played a lot of the original SNES game and really liked it. After that I never played much until the 1st Harvest Moon for DS. Of course, I'm prolly not the best source for info on the series. haha

Favourite series for me?
I've been into Kirby and Pokemon a lot, as well as Pikmin for a more underrated series.

Favorite series? I don't even know how I'd begin to make a top 10, let alone a top favorite. Mario, Zelda, Disgaea (or anything made by NIS really), DMC (ignoring DMC2 and, for now, the upcoming series-ruining DmC), Pokemon, Sonic, Battletoads, Lufia, FF, Mega Man (any of the MM series, I even like BN/SF), Castlevania, Valis (minus the hentai games), Capcom fighting games, Contra, Ghost n' Goblins, DKC, Kirby... I could go on and on. I could never choose a single series I love above all else.

This is a tough one for me. The number 1 and 2 slots I know for sure but there are about 20 that could fit anywhere beneath that.

1. Half-Life
2. Wonderboy
3. Metal Gear, Castlevania, Mario, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, etc, etc

yea Pokemon is up there for me too. my life will not be complete until they make a 3d mmo.

After thinking it over mine would prolly look something like:

1. Castlevania
2. Metal Gear
3. Resident Evil
4. Pokemon/ Final Fantasy/ Mario/ Zelda/ Jak etc

@darko:  If you are willing to spend the money, the best one (IMHO) is Harvest Moon 64. It polished the SNES version without getting too much crap that deterred from the fun and core of the game. If you want to pick up one cheap just to try it out, I'd suggest HM: A Wonderful Life for the GC.

@desocietas: I haven't preordered Tale of Two Towns yet. I haven't decided if I'm going to get the 3DS version yet, and it comes out after the DS one. Also, I paid $8 for the sheep on eBay instead of buying Magical Melody when it came out, then bought the game for $8 at a vintage store. I may do the same with this one; I still haven't put much time into Grand Bazaar to justify another one yet.

I have every preorder plushie for the series, and the sheep is the only one I eBay'd. I even have two cows, one has an anniversary tag on it instead of the original tag. Both of those were preorder bonuses for different games too, haha. The only reason I haven't taken tons of pictures of my HM collection is that my games are stored by console, so getting all those games out would take the better part of a month.

Yep, too hard to pick just one.  I'm a HUGE Working Designs fan.... RIP.

1. Shining
2. Castlevania
3. Suikoden

But, but, a Harvest Moon collection would look so sweet on the front page, @amauriel. ;)

3. Suikoden

My friend @sedaris hates that I still haven't played any of the Suikodens... Just lettin' you know. ;P

@amauriel Yeah, I did a quick eBay search and saw that the other plush pre-orders tend to go for about $10... so I might see if I'll get it that way and just Gamefly Tale of Two Towns (like I do the other ones) or wait for it to drop in price.
Ha, also, I didn't know there'd be a 3DS version.  I'm glad I asked you!  I would've felt totally dumb if I went to preorder it and they told me it's coming out on both systems. :\ That alpaca really is pretty darling, but maybe the 3DS preorder one will be in 3D, too ;)

@scott: I just spent about half an hour digging out plushies and games. The boxes for HM64 and two of the game boy games are buried, but I think I located all the carts and a majority of the cases. The plushies were on a shelf so that part was easy. I'll get my husband to take some photos tonight with his fancy camera. (I only use a point n shoot so he does all our game photography.)

Also, after digging: If anyone has copies of HM: More Friends of Mineral Town (the girl one for the GBA) or HM: Back to Nature (PS1) and want to make some money, let me know. I'm missing three others but they are all current gen so I'm not too concerned about those.

@scott: DS games I don't. Have a tote box full of empty cases. And when you think that there's been 5 or 6 just for that system, that's worth noting.

Hm... maybe I'll preorder the 3DS version if the alpaca is going to go for this much on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/alpaca-plush-Harvest-Moon-Tale-Two-Towns-/160664116132?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item256853dba4

These people are crazy!  Just preorder the 3DS version, and you'll be paying less than $40... AND get a game to go with the damn alpaca!
