I watch hockey. I'm a Colorado Avalanche fan so it has been a rough year, lockout and the fact that we were dung on ice this year. God, I miss Roy and Sakic.

I'm pretty happy with the way the West is going in the playoffs. I just hope Anaheim pulls through tomorrow.

I am shocked that the Islanders put up a fight against the Pens. The Pens are stacked. Especially after the trades they did a few weeks ago.

ah yea colorado had it crazy this year.  I am a Kings fan so I'm hoping for another STanley Cup.  This is actually my first year watching hockey.  I have always been an NFL fan but the physical play from nhl 09 got me into wanting to try out the NHL and I became an immediate fan.   The Oakland Raiders are my NFL team so I had to go with the Kings in hockey.  I love hockey tho.  I just wish it would become a top 2 team sport in the country, and get more television airs from ESPN, FOX and other channels.   Even tho I am a Kings fan, my very first game watched, was the Penguins and I became a fan of Sidney Crosby more than anything.  Love how talented he is.   I also like Rick nash and the rangers.  I was going for crosby in playoffs, but i kind of wanted to see the underdog in the Islanders win this time.  My prediction in the Stanley Cup will be the Kings and Boston!!   Who you got in the final???

My actual pick was Chicago vs. Pittsburgh.

I am hoping for any California team vs. Pittsburgh or the Rangers.

I love Sidney Crosby. He is definitely the star of Hockey right now.

I love the Rangers for their coach John Tortorella. I could watch his interviews all day, especially when he is interviewed by Larry "Brooksie" Brooks. Tortorella is the perfect coach for New York. Mega warning for language on the interview video below.

Pffft. Boston is having a hard time with the Leafs - the LEAFS! They won't make it outta the East. It'll be the Pens and Kings and I think the Kings repeat.

I think it will simply be  a match between the goalies.  Howard versus Crawford/Emery.  When Chicago played Detroit during the regular season, man that game had me on my toes, they were saving every shot!

I do too. The 90s was amazing. Always Detroit or Colorado with the cup. I wish it was March 26, 1997 every day. It makes me laugh that Shanahan is in charge of player safety.  ;D But Vernon vs. Roy... amazing!

Honestly, rage always builds up a little when I see a Red Wings jersey.

Well, Hockey is back. So, far I've been going to several Dallas Stars games. It's a different crowd here than going to the Avalanche games. One game featured two people to my left always on their phone. People behind me talking about the Dallas Cowboys, and to the right was a single hockey fan introducing it to his family. Still fun to be in a city with a hockey team again though.

I finally got to catch up on the Avs. Man is it good to have Patrick Roy back on the ice. First game and already fined $10,000. And people were saying he was going to keep his temper in check. Seriously, I love you Roy.

I'll have to pull up the game. Sounds amazing.

And I don't know if the crowd at the Stars games were better. I went to two preseason games and then work game me tickets to opening night. So, far the first preseason game I went to (in the nose bleed section) had the biggest groups of fans. Although opening night was a good atmosphere. No one looked bored. But a lot of people seemed unclear about the rules. This is ok though.

anyone like me and feel like the NHL should get rid of the point system and just do like other sports and base the divisions on the win-loss record?  I just don't see the point of getting rewarded for not winning a game.  It shouldn't matter if you did not lose in regulation, if you lose the game, you lose the game.

agreed or let the game end in a draw.
why do american sports require someone to win?

because that's the point of sports.  its competition.  the best team should win.  i see too many times where a tied game towards the end of the 3rd period, teams start to play traditional just to advance and at least get one point.  it's not very entertainment to me.  the reason i could see a tie being acceptable is if its a skills competition like the shootout.  Other than that, a game is a game.  One reason  I can't deal with soccer is because they play for so long just to finish 0-0 or 1-1.  I think in hockey, there is more overtime now as a result of each team getting one point.  Who ever plays the hardest and wins should be awarded.  How many teams with loses go into the playoffs because of the point system?  I can't see the point in that one point for losing lol

I actually kind of like the point based system. I think it depends on the team you are a fan of. If your a Pittsburgh Pens fan, the point system probably sucks. You know you're making the playoffs. it just depends on how you do in the playoffs.

But if you are a Colorado Avalanche fan, the point race can help keep your attention in the games. Behind by one in the third period, 2 minutes left, remove that goalie and try to tie this baby up. Get that point! This also makes shootouts more exciting to me.

But the NHL has two seasons to me. The point based qualification round. Then the real season starts in the playoffs.

I like it. Clamoring for points is one of the only ways to keep attention for 82 games.

Let me ask, what is the point of the point system tho?  When did it get started and why?    Furthermore, I just can't get into the points.  I just feel like if you lose the game, you lose the game.  I think teams will slack off in the 3rd just to get a point rather than just win the game.  It seems like it is a motivation for teams to tie rather than win.  They basically have it the same as before the 05 lock out.  If two teams are tied at the end of regulation, you each get a point.  Basically, they are getting a point for a tie.  But do you agree that if there were no points, teams would work so much harder during a game to win and score as many goals as possible?

Additionally, per the Colorado Av's, you do not need a point system lol!  They have an unstoppable offense!!  They create so many scoring chances and shots per game that it seems unbelievable.

So, far the Avs are doing very well. This was not the case the last two seasons. Last season we were dead last or second to last. This year we are ranked first in the league. It's the same team. But, man, I had no idea coaching could do so much at that level. Patrick Roy has made Joe Sacco look like a fool. I was a Patrick Roy fan as a kid. I doubted him when picked as a coach. But man, is it good to have Saint Patrick back.

Well, you get 1 point for a tie. Two points for a win. Most teams go chasing for points at the end. You have to win.

I imagine the point system cam across due to uneven divisions. Most of the time, it is easier to get into the playoffs in the West Coast. The east tends to have the best teams. This year is way different though. The west has been dominating. Philadelphia is a free two points for any team. But I imagine it started for the really packed divisions. You play tough teams more than the other teams do, you should be compensated for ties.

That's my guess though. But it is only a guess.

I think the message that Patrick Roy sent out the first game against the Ducks really did it for his team.  His players know he's got their back and it's motivational.

But lets say your point theory is true.  This is still passifying favoritism teams. That's another theory about the NHL I'm not a fan of.  They have their favorites and push for them.  I don't know.  I guess thats just how I look at sports.  There has to be a winner because it's a competition.  Look at Detroit.  They were complaining about the time zone's for their games, and now there is a re alignment and look at where Florida and Tampa Bay are.  They have to travel NorthEast for all their away division games.  Why couldn't Dallas, Nashville, Florida, Tampa, and someone else in central America be in the same division.  This seemed like a polotical way to get the Florida (southern most) teams to fail.  Other than the point system and the favoritism of certain teams, hockey is great!  This coming from a fan that used to consider NFL my number one sport.  I am still a fan of the NFL, but I think I am starting to watch the decline of it's number one spot.  I want the NHL to get into the top 3 in America, and I guess that's why I'm so strict about it.  I don't see a continuation of a point system healthy for the popularity of the sport.

Oh the NHL definitely has favoritism. Just look at what teams get national telvision spots (although that may not be the NHL's doing). It's always the Leafs, Pens, Flyers, Caps, and Rangers. Also, look at the teams selected for each Winter Classic. Being a hockey fan in the West, I've definitely seen this favoritism.

I'm still a bit skeptical about Colorado, which is weird. I've been a fan since the 90s. And always thought they had top notch talent in the current roster. But the last few years have just been O'Reilly in my opinion. Laneskog had a pretty good first season. But finally, everyone is playing like they should Duchene looks like the star he is supposed to be. Downie started the season off just insane. And Varlamov has been doing well. That is what makes me happiest. I"m a huge fan of Varly.

The division with Florida makes not sense.

Oh and I have to add that the game between Pittsburgh and Colorado was an excellent and shocking game!  I really thought Crosby would pull that game off but Colorado is the real deal  :)
its about time we got back to being a good team.
was poor while we rebuilt but the kids are now coming good.

I feel the same way. Between Manning and Roy, the Denver sports scene is looking good. It just hurts (yet feels kinda right) that our one loss is the the Red Wings. God I hate the Red Wings.

Looking forward to playing Anaheim again...

I am very shocked tho' that Colorado passed up on Seth Jones.  McKinnon seems to be playing very well, but Seth has shined with Shea Weber in Nashville.  @Sin, we should go to a game together sometime?  ;)

because that's the point of sports.  its competition.  the best team should win.

This.  I agree that the point of sports = competition -AND- by default; competing = a winner & a loser.

and you will have a winner at the end of the season.
that is the competition. it does not have to be every game.

UFC???  I don't know about UFC or soccer but I know that NBC's ratings have increased a lot, and baseball's ratings go down ever year in America so I would think one day, hockey would slowly rise but maybe not

hockey will not get big until it is shown on standard tv

I cannot believe the Rangers gave Lundvquist (yea I prob spelled it wrong) a 59.5 million dollar 7 year contract extension!   Am I the only one who thinks thats bizarre?  He is not as great as he once was, and will he really be playing for another 7 years?  Crazy crazy.

Before the 94-95 lockout the NHL was positioning perfectly to start pulling ahead of the NBA. I was big into hockey at that time and the momentum literally stopped overnight.

As a side note - Yzerman is playing in the Winter Classic alumni game which is awesome. I won't be able to make the game but we are going on the 29th for the OHL double header.

What happened after 94-95 for the NHL to drop?  What do you see for the future of the NHL in America?

General interest just plummeted which resulted in news media and networks dropping coverage. This was a time when NHL was broadcast national on Fox - which helped to drive popularity even though non-playoff ratings were poor. Honestly it was probably worse after the 04-05 lockout since during that time we missing over 1000 games.

It's hard to see outside of my Michigan bubble because hockey is a big deal here. Interest has grown amounts my friends dramatically over the past few years. I personally watch a lot of hockey and hit up an OHL game at least once a month.

I just began watching it over the  last few seasons and it is now my number 1 sport over the NFL.  I love it!  It does seem to be getting more popular with tv viewers and now they have special programs on nbc sports network other than the games and they have a show coming to HBO I believe this week or next week.  And more and more American players are getting into the league each season which helps its growth I believe.  I wish I could live up north just to have the beauty of being in a hockey town.

I noticed those specific markets have dedicated and large fan bases.  Detroit, we seen how large Chicago's fan base is from last seasons stanley cup and the parade afterwards.  Southern california has a dedicated market, I heard Minnesota is a hockey town too.

Sports were perceived differently in the 90s. Remember that baseball had a strike around the same time and attendence plummetted with that too. It wasn't until McGwire and Sosa were heating up the NL home run record race did the fans end up coming back. Hockey didn't have anything super exciting happen after 94-95 to bring the crowds back.

Aww man!  I remember as a kid, dying to watch a cubs game on WGN or McGuire just to see who would hit the most home runs that day.  It was so entertaining until later I realized it was stereoids   :-[    I guess stereoids or any type of gimmik will not work with hockey due to the nature of the game.  I also remember my most watched sport in the 90s was Michael Jordan and the championship bulls!  I thought the NBA fell off after he retired.  But I still watch and love the NHL even if I am the only one in my city who does  ;)

I was going to mention the star power as well but couldn't put it together properly. At that time in the mid 90s, Gretzky and Lemieux were the aging stars even though they were still playing. They weren't the big exciting guys. I guess you could say Martin Brodeur and Teemu Selanne, Paul Kariya were the biggest stars but they weren't anywhere close to those guys from the 80s. I'd say there wasn't any big time star in Hockey until Crosby and Ovechkin got in, but the problem was they got in right after the 04-05 lockout. And as we know, lockouts hurt leagues and following and attendence. Things were better but again hockey had another lockout and we only got half the season out of it. It hasn't gotten back yet and Crosby isn't what he used to be and any other star in the league still ends up being a well kept secret in the country's eyes.

But that's just the US that has this problem really. Hockey is big elsewhere and doesn't suffer the problem of being buried. Part of the problem is TV and radio coverage. The national stations don't mention anything unless something stupid or exciting happens. And if you don't live in a hockey town, your local radio probably doesn't talk about it, since the national radio shows (Rome, Cowherd, that Tiki Barber show, Boomer and cartan, etc) rarely mention it.

Don't forget about Patrick Kane.  I think he should have the most impact in the US just for the fact that he is an American hockey player that is a super star.

Here's my 2 cents on hockey popularity.

It's never going to catch on. 75% of the country will never grow up playing hockey. Kids everywhere can play baseball, football, and basketball. Not so much with hockey. Kids won't have that seed planted when they're young.
I tried to like hockey when I was a teenager. It just didn't work out. I don't understand it and I don't like it.

As for the UFC, there is nothing more entertaining than a good fight. It's my favorite.

Ugh, the NBC feed is horrible. CBC is the way to go but I'm Canadian and biased. NBC guys don't seem to know what the hell they're talking about.

Regardless, the best team won :D

GO LEAFS GO!!!

Oh and I'll probably be rooting for the US team in the Olympics too - Kessel and JVR are on the team  8)

Awww man I love Doc and Eddy Ovelcheck!  Keep in mind tho' that in the US, we have to watch it on NBC lol.  But I do watch Hockey night in Canada sometimes on Directv (sometimes we pick up the cbc feed) and I do have to say I enjoy I think their name is Jim Hughston and Craig??  I could be wrong.  I do like them but I think that Doc, Piere McGuire and Eddy have the best chemistry out of all the US channels that show hockey.

Overall it was a good game tho'.  I thought Jimmy Howard was finally playing like he was last season and giving the weather conditions, both goalies did outstanding.  But, Toronto got lucky at the end lol.    I mean, wouldn't Detroit have scored at the end of the breakaway and then they blew the stupid horn to switch sides?  I do not think Bernier would have stopped that one.  Good game tho'.

It sucks that Detroit lost, as they're my #1 team. Oh well. I am going to root for team USA, just like I did last time, even though I am Canadian.
