Title: Anyone interested in a together retro?
Post by: sin2beta on May 28, 2013, 09:34:50 pm
Just curious if anyone is interested in doing a vgcollect together retro or let's play type of thing. Racketboy does this as does nintendoworldreport. But didn't know if people here would be interested.

The idea is that each month the participating members play the same game. You can post your thoughts, let's play videos, anything. The goal is to play games we otherwise would not play. We all have holes in our gaming catalog. For example, I have never played Wing Commander, Ultima, etc. The activity also brings back the memories of chatting with your friends about a particular game everyone is playing.

There are other sites doing it, so it may be overkill to do here. But it could help build the community as well. Anyways, if you think it is a good idea respond. Also feel free to post possible games. I would suggest leaving it open to stuff that is easily emulated or on GOG.com so as many people can join in as possible.

That'd be great, but considering we all collect for several different systems (unlike some sites which focus on one company) it might be a bit tough.

I'd be willing to do this

That's why I'm thinking stick to something that can be easily emulated. This way it pushes us out of our collecting niches as well.

Before the site crashed and the forums died, we did a community gaming every month. We voted on a game and all played it throughout the month. It was a good time as long as people didn't get too busy.

Well, there is at least some interest. Might as well give it a sot and see how it goes. If you guys want, we can aim for June 1st being the first date. I'd say list some games you think would be good that are considered classics but maybe you just never have gotten to. Or if you just know a good game that you have played. Anything will work. And even if your not interested, list some games you think might be good.

Snatcher
Shadowrun
Crystalis
Super Mario RPG
Ultima
Doom
Alone in the Dark
Psychonauts (GOG.com)

All of which are holes in my gaming experiences and nowhere near getting to the top of my to play pile. Add any suggestions you have and echo good picks from others. If games get echoed, we will put them up for a vote. That's at least my thinking. If someone else has a better procedure, let me know.

here's some games that can be added to the list

myst
time cop on nes
nancy drew games
beneath a steel sky (free on GOG)
the lost crown a ghost hunting adventure

all of these game are under $10 and are downloadable just in case some one doesn't have one of these games

Nice idea -but- since I don't game on a pc and/or emulate anything, and since I basically can only play certain types of rpg's...I'll just cheer the rest of ya on  ;)

I'd be up for this. It shouldn't be too hard to find a game or two that we can all agree on. What with the compare lists option.

Shadowrun
Crystalis
Super Mario RPG
Psychonauts (GOG.com)

I'd be down for any of these, since I own or can get my hands on them easily.

I would also echo myst. It's been on my list.

I say we get a list of games for today and tomorrow and then start a voting process.

I put a list of games that more than one person mentioned in the first post.

I wouldn't be able to now or within the near future, but I would love to participate later on. This sounds like a lot of fun. It might also introduce people to games they never would've thought of playing. For now, I'll just follow after disgaeniac like the sheep I am and cheer you guys on. :)

I'll second earthworm Jim and also throw in a vote for vectorman. It may give me motivation to actually become good at that game. It is freakin' hard. I'll update the votes. I think this puts psychonauts and EWJ at a tie.

You know I have never heard of syndicate. But it is crazy acclaimed. And really cheap on GOG. I'd be willing to be a second backer and get it on the main page.

I JUST played through Psychonauts, so selfishly, I'd rather it not be that.  But it is wonderful.

I'll put in a vote for Shadowrun.  Love that game.

Recorded your vote. It is now tied between shadowrun, psychonauts, and Earthworm Jim for the lead.

Of course. Your vote is in. Psychonauts in the lead again. Shadowrun and Earthworm Jim close behind.

Keep game recommendations coming as well. Also, I've been counting votes for more than one game. So, don't think you have to choose just one if there are a few games you think would be good.

I'm thinking I want to do Earthworm Jim. But which version? Or does it matter? I do have both.

My vote goes for Earthworm Jim.

The original version of Psychonauts may be a bit too tough for most people. The PC version got an update that changed the layout of the Meat Circus stage, but the consoles version still have the original one, and that level has been known to cause people to break their pads. Hell, I had a hard time with the remade version...

How about some NES games!

Batman
Bionic Commando
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Destiny of an Emperor
Faxanadu
Metal Gear

Yeah, I'm just going to recount everything and put every title up. The way I have it is probably really confusing. Give me a bit and I'll update the first post with the counts.

Is this considered a vote for earthworm jim?

And to answer thomascozine, I'm assuming the first EWJ.

Yes, I'm voting for Earthworm Jim. But, what I mean is the Genesis or SNES version? Or does that even matter?

Counted it.

It won't matter. For instance, I will probably go with either the XBLA or the Special Edition on Sega CD or PC. To be honest, I will probably take this opportunity as an excuse to really dive in and explore the differences in the versions. I'm considering it a one month study of the game, in my opinion.

Basically, whatever is easiest for you to get.

I figure we will officially start play on saturday the 1st of June.

I forgot to mention timezone. We will go eastern I guess. Three hours left to get the final votes in...

Also, anybody have any suggestions for what we call this. Together Retro is what racket boy uses. NWR uses retroactive. The best I could come up with is VGConnect...

So, I am open to suggestions.

Not that I'm recommending anything but, but this reminds me of when I used to own 9 super nintendos. 9x SNES, or SNES9x if you will. Plus, when I was a kid, I had a speech impediment and pronounced SNES as bSNES or zSNES. Man those were some crazy times...

But it hit midnight eastern. So, Earthworm Jim is our first VGCollect Let's play (of the rebooted forum).

VGConnect is clever.  +1, sir.
