Love the name!  I'm glad Earthworm Jim won.  For one, it's one that I have.  I've needed a good excuse to jump off in this one.  That damn Peter Puppy has been scaring me off.

Is this a timed comp or what?

I think it's running the length of the month?

Title: Re: VGConnect June 2013: Earthworm Jim

I meant that as in, are we going for a speed run, or just trying to see who can beat it?

Post by: scott on May 31, 2013, 01:00:23 pm
Oh, I have no idea on that.

We could make a competition out of it though. Of course, all there is to win is bragging rights.

I was thinking that we all try and beat it and if anyone gets stuck then we can give advice?
if it was a game with a high score on the other hand like donkey kong then i think that high scores would be posted and see who is crowned king at the end of the month.

sadly i will have to wait a week or 2 before i can start this.

I think everyone should post a pic when they beat it :)

I used to play it a LOT when I was young. I'm pretty sure I can still beat it.

I'm using this as an opportunity to expand my collection. I just bought a copy of Earthworm Jim for Sega on Ebay and I cant wait to play!
Title: Re: VGConnect June 2013: Earthworm Jim
Post by: sin2beta on May 31, 2013, 06:08:00 pm
Yeah, I think it is used primarily as a way to expand collections and gaming experience. But yeah, I think each should post a picture when they beat the game. We also could go for bragging rights on scores, secret items, if on XBLA or PSN 100%, anything and everything. What I think would be cool is if people opened up some youtube channels and started discussion or gameplay videos even. Basically let your creativity go on anything. Ever wanted to start a blog? Here's an excuse, A youtube channel? Here's an excuse! Anything that helps build the community interaction.

But I definitely like the idea of posting a pic of the end screen. And, if possible, do it the old fashioned Nintendo Power way. If you are using an emulator a screenshot will probably suffice. But I'd like to see the tv and the game box or system by the tv so we know whatcha playin.

It'd be nice to know how many people beat the game in the month and all the versions. Who knows maybe we can beat earthworm jim in every variation as a group...  8)

Oh, and it is all month.

I'm gonna redownload my GOG.com version. Maybe this time I'll be able to map the gamepad.

I'm also gonna brag about my signed game...

Yep. Back in March '08, when Video Games Live had a concert in my hometown. He was at a local con and he signed my game then. I also got Jack Wall to sign my copy of Unreal II.

I'll try this weekend to record my playthrough. Can't say I'll do to well after level 7 or 8. I've always sucked on "Down The Tubes" and end up wasting my continues.

Got me a copy on SNES! Gonna go hop on it after I do last month's Stats!

Also, I'm gonna move this to the Classic Games board. Both so it doesn't get buried and since it's retro. :)

Maybe this is old news, but I'm excited about it for ewj on the computer.  I made my saved game path a dropbox folder, so that it is synced wherever I have time to play.  That makes it much more encouraging to pick up and play whenever.

Ugh I suck so hard at this game. The trash can boss smoked me like 5 times, then the last time I killed him in less than 30 seconds? Then I got to the crane guy just after him and it was Game Over already. haha

Also, that's a super clever use of dropbox. I wouldn't have ever thought to do that.

I have the PSN version of this (Earthworm Jim HD), so I decided to play through it (instead of the Genesis version which I also have). I don't think it has much different from the old versions other than the visuals and it has the Suitless Jim levels from the Sega CD version of the game. And I think the "normal" difficulty I played on is easier than the SNES/Genesis versions (should've played the "original" difficulty I guess). It also has hints for every boss if you press select.

One thing I'll say that I'm sure everyone thinks the same I do: I hate For Pete's Sake... such a BAD level.
Otherwise I really like most of this game. The humor is perfect (like that EPIC boss in the water level) with all the weird naming of everything, the levels are fun, the music is great, it has a great ending, and it's pretty hard.
Not a fan of having an Andy Asteroids level between each level, but I guess it's a continue opportunity every time if you're good enough at them. There are a few annoying things, like those enemies that kill you in one shot in Buttville, but it's a matter of learning how to deal with them.

Favorite music: What the Heck!

Relevant links - improvised ragtime versions of some of the game's tunes (not his best stuff, but still nice... one of his best is his improv of the Nyan Cat tune... like, truly epic, once you get through the first minute or 2):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIYYO9x51eQ (music from the secret level that I ahve no idea how to get to)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xshVLWtf6vg (that one tune that you hear way too much in the game :P)

Note 1: This figurine is quite nice, I got it and really like it even if it's not terribly poseable (it's to keep the legs the same size as in the games) - http://www.amazon.com/Mezco-Toyz-Earthworm-Action-Figure/dp/B0073HNOEC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370150424&sr=8-1&keywords=earthworm+jim
Note 2: That signed Sega CD version is badass, awesome stuff.

Whoa Nelly!

Well, I got to Down the Tubes. What the Heck only took 2 tries to get through, and I managed to only die twice on the boss.

I beat Major Mucus today. Then, I had to quit. Either I'm better at this than I used to be, or the XBLA version is kiddie-fied.

I posted this in the wrong spot earlier.  So that isn't déjà vu. I'm just an idiot.

I can't get my 360 Pad to work with DOSBox, so I had to improvise an XPadder config file. The game is not emulated, it's some sort of port created by a company called Rainbow Arts. It looks like the Sega CD version, only... not? It's hard to explain.

I have no idea what to expect of this, but I'll keep folks posted.

Oh yeah, this version has passwords. Do any of the other versions have those?

I made it to the second (third?) level so far.  What the heck?

It's tuff.  The hardest part so far for me was the first level miniboss.  That tire guy.  Oof.

Yeah! Finally got internet at my new apartment. I picked up the game on XBLA and played the normal setting. After playing through it, I definitely think it is easier than the GEN/SNES versions. I am going to check out the new town and see if I can find a Genesis copy.

I did beat EWJ for the first time yesterday though. I love the ending! I honestly was not expecting that.

I will have plenty to say later today I'm sure.

Sucks that Evil the Cat beat you up so much, up until then it was going pretty well. When I fight him I just shoot constantly and rotate the d-pad, that works surprisingly well (though it's not foolproof).
I'll note that (at least in the PS3 version) you can boost in the asteroid levels and you have a tackle move in the Snot battle.

I am thinking about doing it again. Perhaps, instead, the SNES version. Just to at least see what, if anything, is different between them. It is a game worth seeing though to the end. It's just so damn hard.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did lessen the difficulty in certain ways for the HD versions. Good to know.

Next for me is the genesis version. Man if the HD version is less difficult, I hate to see Buttville on the Genny. The level starts off with a descent section that appears to be where vvvvvv got it's inspiration from.

Oh, and the level "For Pete's Sake".... I LOVE it. I really really do. That and Buttville are my favorites. Pete just looks so damn happy. At least until he gets eaten or falls.

Buttville has my favorite music. I submitted it for the top 100 video game themes thread.

I totally love Buttville even though it's pretty hard (those one-hit-kill dudes... I have no idea how to deal with them, I just pass by and hope not to die), but For Pete's Sake is just annoying.
If you mess up a lot it does become massively annoying to constantly be sent back, but sometimes it feels like the hit detection just doesn't do what you want and Pete just falls in holes when you don't feel he should

You whip them. shooting does nothing but the whip takes them out quick.

So, I recently won an ebay auction for the game gear earthworm jim. I finally got it for a much better amount than $12 shipped most people want. So, I'm excited to try this out.

I also did some digging and found a fan site called rocketworm. Things I found interesting.

- Employee working on game named Andy Astor (Andy Asteroids anyone?)

- There is some concept art that was placed on the HD versions of EWJ. They are done in a comic panel. I thought it was just weird extras that had no real significance. But they predate the game. I don't know if the special edition of PC or SEGACD had this either? http://rocketworm.com/information/original-ewj-games.html

*gives up*

The PC port that GOG sells has HORRIBLE controls for some godforsaken reason. You know that bit in What The Heck where you have to run on top of some glowing green crystals to proceed? Well, Jim kept SLIPPING off the damn things. I spent ten minutes trying to get past the first one.

And then I got to the second lawyer.

I ragequit soon after. The game NEVER gave me this much trouble in consoles.

I remembered the green gems being easier to run on as well. I have the XBLA version, I slipped a lot, but it sounds like it controls better than the PC version.

I had a few problems with slipping on the SNES version. Or running off it because the game didn't register that I was standing on the thing.

You can see, at about 14:00, I had some issues with the green gems in my playthrough on the Genesis. Wonder if I'll have the same issue on the SNES?

According to the documents included with the game, the Rainbow Arts (GOG) port was based on the Sega CD version. So... it might be a thing on the Genesis.

I also have found that some things don't translate when it came to analog. So, if you are using a wired 360 controller or something, you might not use the stick for EWJHD. I found the stick to be really bad when trying to pick your @$$ up away from the Lou Ferrigno Cats.

Also, one of the main differences I found in EWJHD from normal to original difficulty is that the game assists some of the movements. For example it automatically press up for you when hanging on a ledge from the roided out cats. And the hit detection is made much wider when trying to dock at the air valves in down the tubes. But the enemies and level design seem the same. Same number of hits, etc.

So, I'm trying to figure out the pattern without going to gamefaqs and I feel stupid for not being able to find the pattern.... but that robot chicken at the end of level 5 when you start falling.... I just shoot maniacally standing in one spot and it seems about a 50/50 chance of me killing it before it kills me.

That Robot Chicken smoked me, and I was doing so well. All of Level 5 annoyed me, cause I couldn't tell what I could and couldn't jump on and it seemed to be a lot of blind leaps of faith too.

So, where do you guys think this fits compared to other platformers? I would honestly have to put this one fairly high on my list. It's not the enjoyment I get from Sonic 2 or Mario 3, but I think it is the level right below those. I think it is a tad better than the Konami platformers like Rocket Knight and Tiny Toons Buster Busts Loose. And I enjoy it more than vectorman. It's certainly a lot better than games like Cool Spot.

Basically, it is not the system seller platformers. But it is the next step down in my opinion.

I think what holds the game back is the difficulty. The latter half of the game just gets annoyingly hard. At least for me. Which is really a shame since it has such a great feel. The atmosphere, art design, and characters are some of the best from this time.

It's kind of like Battletoads in this regard. Fun game. Good controls. But annoying to absurd difficulty.

I think the battletoad similarity is very apt. I don't think EWJ is nearly as difficult. Although it has been years since I played battletoads. But it does seem to be very similar in feel, attitude, humor, and quality. Good call with that comparison!

My copy of EWJ for Game Gear made it in today! I'm probably one of the few people who gets super excited over a new Game Gear game. Anyways, it plays remarkably similar to the Genesis version. In my opinion, there have always been two different types of portable games. The Game Boy/Game Gear method where it is the same title as the console game but a very different game. Then there is the PSP model where it is just a shrunk down version of the console game. Despite being on the Game Gear it really feels like the PSP model. This isn't my video, but it showcases it a bit...

Things of note:

- The whip and gun are the same button. Tap to whip, press to fire. This sounds awful, but it is surprisingly easy to manage. I've yet to accidentally do the wrong thing surprisingly.

- The hit box for the whip is REALLY big. If you whip at a crow, it will go down.
