This is the official thread of the July VGConnect. Post anything related to Startropics here:
Until July 1st gets here, what are your memories of this game? This was actually a childhood favorite of mine. It was one of the easiest games to find toward the end of the NES's life. I remember going into a KB Toys all the time and they would just have copy after copy of Star Tropics and Zoda's Revenge. The abundance of copies is what I remember most. ;D I think I eventually bought them both new in the playstation/saturn/n64 era actually. This was like mid to late 90s. This was probably the first RPG that made sense. Up until this point I don't even think I knew that Zelda had dungeons. I just did not "get" RPG games. I remember StarTropics being a good intro to RPGs.
I always found it a bummer Zoda's Revenge was not a SNES game. I wonder how the series would have done if that was the case.
-
My cousin had Startropics when we were kids. I remember him showing me it and I instantly fell in love with it, but never picked up my own copy. I borrowed it countless times over the course of my early gaming days and got really far, but never finished it.
Love the music in this game.
-
StarTropics was actually the first and only game that I called the Nintendo Help Line for. Well, also Mario 64 but that was because of my cartridge was glitched... StarTropics was the one game I called them because I was actually stuck in it. So it's notable for that in my memories.
As an NES game in general it's notable for being the only NES game developed by Nintendo themselves that didn't get a japanese release at all (I think... oh and the sequel of course... correct me if I'm wrong). There's also the Nintendo version of Tetris, but they got another version so I don't count that :P
It's one of my favorite NES games actually. If I managed to be able to make a top 10 for the system, it would be in there. Amazing music, I liked the storyline and setting, badass gameplay... there's nothing really wrong about it. Sad that Zoda's Revenge didn't live up to the first AT ALL, it's terrible in comparison.
I'll definitely play through this soon for the VGConnect :P
-
I kinda enjoyed Zoda's Revenge and thought it was neat. But agree that it seemed like a lesser version of the game. Eventually I want to get both on NES, all I have is Startropics on Wii VC right now.
-
Im looking forward to this. :)
-
It may sound kind of odd, but what I always took away from StarTropics was the control. It took me a second to get the hang of it. As being stuck to a grid was a game mechanic I have never played before. But since the game was designed around it makes so much sense. I find it more enjoyable because of it.

I liked hearing the Nintendo Help Line story. I never called but always remember the advertisements and such. It's a long gone era from before the internet. It brings back memories similar to the Official Nintendo forums with people like NOA Andy.
I didn't know that it did not get a Japanese release. Interesting.
Your and mascozine's comments have me interested about the controls. I don't remember them too well.
I am looking forward to the game!
-
I have never played this game. I put if in to see if it worked, but I've never played it.
This is going to be a good test to see if these NES games are actually good or if I'm blinded by nostalgia.
-

Agreed. ZR had a good thing going, but it seemed more linear than Star Tropics I. I'm honestly surprised that Nintendo doesn't have any plans on re-hashing the series. It's coming up on its 25th here in 2 years.
-
Nintendo hasn't done anything with the series in nearly that long. The games didn't even get released in Japan, so they probably don't care about it.

It might feel odd at first. Moving around feels stiff, because you don't actually move in a direction right away when you press it, but rather Mike first turns in that direction and then he can start moving (unless you're already facing that direction, of course. It makes you think more about how you move around, since you can't just twitch out of the way like in other games.
So it feels odd when you start playing, but the game really is designed around that movement and after a dungeon or 2 it will feel natural.
-
I might feel odd at first.
:o
That made me laugh.
I plan to start the game tomorrow. I seem to remember the grid like movement. I remember jumping being a pain... Not sure if it was or not though.
-
I decided on the game I want to play ... but Im going to wait on it and try to enjoy this one for a bit first. Tomorrow it is!

That made me laugh.
And that, kids, is why you should read your posts before posting :P
-
I feel odd all the time!
-
Well I started the game tonight

I think I will start tonight also.
-
I will try to work on this tomorrow. Its a little late for me tonight to get into something like this.
-
I'll prolly start it up tomorrow night at some point. I can already hear the music in my head!

I'm in!

Did you get it though? That's actually one of the parts that stumped me as a kid.
-
I gamefaq'd it. Full disclosure.

I finally gave up and looked it up on gamefaqs, I never even tried to get it from there. I just kept trying to figure out a way to get my boat over to it somehow.
Have not had any problems since the bottle, I'm really enjoying the game so far. I am at the ghost town right now.
-
I imagine this game could be close to impossible without GameFAQs. But maybe Dr. jones' letter is not needed to beat the game... I don't remember.
Basically, there is a part in the game where you have to submerge a physical piece of paper that came packaged with the game.
-
I hope to have my video up soon. But I'm planning something different then just a "Let's Play" style. Hope it works.
Also, it took my girlfriend and I about a half hour to get from the beginning to that bottle area. :o

Yeah, I'm toying with ways to record this. I have all my SEGA stuff set up to record. But my computer is old enough to choke on recording emulator footage. I'm going to experiment with running a NES emulator on my Dreamcast. Because what could make StarTropics better? The dreamcast controller, of course!
-
I started this today ... but I got interrupted by someone who brought me over a copy of Fire n ice for my collection. But I will be back at it tomorrow. :)
-
I might finally start tonight. Its been a hectic few days.

This game is pretty tough! That octopus boss took a lot of punishment!

He's a lot easier if you use the snowman.

When I figured out how to use the items I did not even get hit once by it.

Alright I started... ha

Why cant I ever get this damn puzzle to work the first time I try it?!?!?!
And thats where I stopped. Stage 5 Captain Bells whatever...
-
I do not think the fire boss would have been as hard if you could actually find health before the fight. I only had three hearts each time.

Ah, that's actually one of the game's flaws... even if you know that puzzle's solution, it won't work until you talk to the proper NPCs.
-
I made sure I did... stupid parrot.

This is an odd turn of events:
I was playing on a different computer (linux), and I could pick up my saved game fine, and play fine, but when I picked up items, they just wouldn't exist. They never went into my inventory. I was playing the ghost village dungeon, and I couldn't figure out what was attacking me, or how I was supposed to use the rod. GRR! Frustrating!

Might be a stupid question, but are you pressing pause then scrolling down to get to your inventory?

Welp, that was it. I feel sheepish.

I just started my game of this. Looking for a crystal ball right now.
I forgot how tough this game is, but it's so good.
-
Seconded about the last two levels, holy cow. That was tough. But WOO! Done!
This was much less cool in-game

Two bananas at once?!? Mike never ceases to amaze me with his talent...
I think I'm going to power through this game this weekend like Mike powers through bananas.

I have the game on Wii, but I started playing it last night via emulator on my DS. Only problem is, it isn't a good rom of the game and I actually couldn't see the items in my inventory. I managed to get to chapter 3 before calling it quits last night.
I'm gonna wander to game shops today after work and see if I can find a cart for it locally. If not, then I'm gonna restart on my Wii VC copy.

Just curious, did you see the posts on the previous page about the inventory items?
-
Oh I knew about that. What I meant is it's all garbled and you can't see what the items in the boxes are. So I have to guess which ones I'm selecting. :)
Like, rather than a yo-yo, I see Mike's overworld sprite in that box. It's messed up.

I just recently bought Zoda's Revenge CiB for $10! I figured since I have the original CiB...
-
Finally, getting around to at least typing this up. I really wanted to do a video, but not just a let's play kind of thing like I did for Earthworm Jim. Sadly, with how busy my life is it hasn't worked out. So, instead I'm doing a little write up.
Playing with my girlfriend, who had a little bit better experience with the game then I, having grown up with it, was a real help. I played back in the day, but not much since it was a friends. The puzzle solving was still challenging, but she's more analytical then I so we could play off each others strengths. I have to say I think the gameplay has held up really well after 20, some odd, years.
I can see why some might not like the controls. Say, you just played Zelda and then went into StarTropics. The tight controls might come off as too stiff. But given some time they make perfect sense. Considering the enemy movements and platform structure I feel the game would be worse for it. Which makes me worry about Zoda's Revenge.
But overall, I really enjoyed this game. The battery save was also a Godsend.
-
I played about an hour so far this month ... just really wasnt feeling it. :(
-
I've only had time to play the little bit I did too. But I am really glad we chose it for this month. Its a great game, and I'll be sure to return to it soon.
-
I finished playing through it. I played it on emulator because I'm lazy, and used a gratuitous amount of save-states.
...
Man I must have been some kind of gaming god when I was a kid, this game is REALLY hard, and having to play through the final few levels nearly flawlessly is almost inconceivable.
What I like about this game is how good the game design is. EVERYTHING is deliberate. The way you move, how your attack works, the items, the range of your attacks, how jumping works, how the levels are set up, how the monsters move, how secrets are hidden, character progression... everything is meticulously planned so that everything works with everything else. It has its issues, namely the part with the parrot, and with the piece of paper you have to dip in water (if you get the game used, you likely won't have that piece of paper)... But the good parts of this game are SO good I can ignore the few flaws.
When anyone tells me they want to get into making games, I tell them to go play StarTropics.
It's a shame Zoda's Revenge destroyed the franchise. Instead of building on what made the first one great, it just broke what didn't need fixing.
