Title: Save Your Change, Folks the 3rd
Post by: scott on October 23, 2013, 07:59:11 pm
Alrighty. Save Your Change moves on to the a 3rd go around! This time it'll end on April 20th, 2014, so get started saving it all up!

Like previous SYCs, anyone that wants to join in can do so and all you need to do is save pocket change for 6 months. At the end of the 6 months we each announce our grand totals and show off what sweet prize you bought yourself with it. It's a great way to buy yourself that grail item for your collection, or even something spendy not pertaining to gaming at all!

This is the exact reason I have ignored these so far....  How the hell am I supposed to break a habit of never carrying cash after damn near 10 years~!  I only carry cash on Fridays because of the crazy yard sale guy down the road....  :(

Yeah, its kind of great~!  He's like 10 houses down the street right on the corner and he has random shit all over his lawn as decorations....  Like a unicorn made of scrap metal....  All of his yard sales are interesting even if you don't find something you want because it is literally as random as it gets....  He very rarely has any kind of idea what the value of his stuff is, but I don't think he really cares....  Best kind of yard sales man....

Thanks you Turf.  Now I'm aware of this thread.  Okay so it sounds simple but I just want to make sure I am correct in understanding as I am pretty slow if you guys did not know  ;)  I just save up cash money for 6 months, buy whatever for my collection and post how much I saved and what I bought?

I'll join in.  I'll see if I could save some money for more games off my wishlist...  Maybe even a double-whammy if I'm lucky, become a PRO Supporter.

There you go.  One day when I get PayPal money again I'm certainly going to become a PRO supporter.  I'll talk to my wife tomorrow to see if I have any money to save starting tomorrow.  I want to go out to the store and actually get a jar and everything lol.

Turf, you got to post what you spent your money on in this topic man.  Be the first!

Aw man, this will never work for me. I think I've made about $10 in change in six months. I use my credit cards too much. (On the plus side, I can stay some three nights at a high-end Marriott for free right now  ;) )

Soera would approve of my "piggy" bank, though~ :P

I just started using cash for day to day little stuff. At then end of the day I just throw all the coins in a jar. It actually adds up pretty quick. I end up with about $100 every 6 months. It's money you never really miss. It's kind of like those credit card points, except you get to spend it on games!

The way it's looking, I might be dropping out of this round. I might need to roll up what I have saved up already (estimating $40-50) and drop it in the bank.  :-\

Haha it's funny that we are doing this as a group. I have been doing something similar to this for a couple of years; I have a bucket of change that I have and then when a new game comes out that I really want, I cash the change out and go buy it. The last time I cashed out was in Sept, I bought Tale of Xillia Limited Edition with the money. Let's see what I pick up next ;)

Ya it's really nice to have spare cash from it to splurge on something you normally wouldn't drop the cash for.

Episode 1: I scored all the Doors albums in Vinyl.
Episode 2: I used it to pay for half of my PS4

This time I was going to shoot for a set of Doc's, the rest of the X-Wing figures I need, the Super Dungeon Explore figures I'm missing or maybe the Xenosaga games...

I'm going to roll up what I have tonight and see what I've got at the 3 month mark. I am still thinking I may need to use it for bills at this point. But I'll know more once me and the GF rework the budget tomorrow night.

Yeah, I've had to dump the change on bills a few times, but all well. Assuming I won't have to do this, here is what I am considering getting:

-An XBOX 360 Slim

-The Misadventures of Tron Bonne

- Completing my NA Dreamcast or N64 collection (only need six more games on each to have all the games I want for them)

I'm looking hard at Wacky Races on NES.  It might magically grow by $100 or so and turn into Bubble Bobble 2.  It really depends on if I make a little trip out to OKC at the end of March.

Nice!   :)

Into this house we're born, into this world we're thrown...There's a killer on the road...One of my favorite songs of all time!

May not be appropriate but keep this *on the low*.  Light My Fire was one of the songs in rotation when I used to fire up my *good green* back in the day.  And then, another favorite, Alabama Whiskey Bar and hello, hello wont you tell me you're name

Scott, you are going to make me pull out my Doors Greatest Hits CD right now and put it on repeat all day!   :D

I was thinking the same thing, too.

My proposed strategy for card users who want to participate is to find an average amount of their monthly spending and use that number as a maximum limit.  In this case, let's set the figure on $800.  If the person could manage to spend below the proposed limit, then the remaining amount would be the money saved and/or would be spent for this event.

Does this sound good?

Or when you buy something, round up to the next whole dollar and allow that as your "change". I used to do that with my debit card to give myself a little cushion.

Just did a quick count on my quarters last night, while splitting them into their regular container (I got lazy and was dumping them in with the smaller change). Looks like I'm sitting around about $40 in quarters alone.

I decided to keep saving the change, rather than dumping it off to bills. So I'm still in the game!

If it was like $90, it'd have been worth it to roll up and stick in the bank. But since it's less than $40, it's not worth it yet ,haha.

Counted up my change a few days early, since the Super Dungeon Explore Kickstarter ends today and the plan was to use the change money to cover my pledge.

Total for this 6 months: $107.50

A fair bit lower than the last 2 savings periods. But I'll take it. :)

I screwed up.  I thought the plan was to use the unspent change/cash/budget from the previous month to the next month and so forth until April 20 and on that day, we would list and announce what we've bought with the savings.

I guess I'll just buy some special brownies to commemorate that day...

Honestly, I consciously break dollars. If something is $1.01, I give them $2 instead of digging out a penny. It's a silly game I play with myself. I have really considered saving everything after breaking a $5. Then I could buy something real dumb in October.

Ive done that a few times ... had the change in my pocket to make it an exact purchase but broke another bill just for more for the saving. Like I said earlier though, this upcoming one is going to be the best. Im going to start breaking bills on tips at the end of every shift. I may be able to afford Magic knight Rayearth on nothing but change when its over.

That's what I do. Usually I break dollars during work and then empty my pockets when I change out of work clothes. So when I leave to do other things after work I have no change and break more dollars.

I deliver pizzas. At the end of the day, like today, Im going to take a few dollars of my tips and convert them to change. Got like $3 today in change.

When did you start doing that?

$30... Real slow this time of year, But since Garage sales and the Flea Markets are starting to pick up around here next round will be better.

Ive been working for about a month now. Im getting more hours than anyone else at my restaurant including the store manager. Its a company Ive worked for before and know all the systems/procedures so he is wanting me to be one of the 2 assistant managers. Would mean even more hours but my guess is the pay raise may make it worth it.

Finally counted my stash last night. We rolled up $97.50 (there was left over change but not rolled so it went back in the jar).

Since my girlfriend moved in, it's now a shared change jar, so that sum will be going towards either our Disney World Vacation, or a new TV stand so we can have all our systems out and hooked up.

Hahah, so I thought I'd count out my change by hand because I was worried it wouldn't be enough to make it worth it at Coinstar.

I think I'll have to lump this round into the next SYCF, but here's the grand total!

$10.35

I don't use much cash during the holiday season, but I think I will try to use cash this summer!
