Just curious is there a reason why the Dreamcast category is just "Dreamcast" instead of "Sega Dreamcast"? I realize that originally Sega wanted to drop their name from the console, but they chose to release it with the Sega name in the end.

Lol, I was just saying this to myself the other day while trying to find a dreamcast game in my collection.... "why is Dreamcast all the way up here by itself?" ;)
yes, could we change it so that it's called "Sega Dreamcast".
thanks dev team!

You know... I can't remember why we did that. I think it was because of the way it was branded originally.
But like I said, I can't really remember.
-
If there is any way to change it to Sega Dreamcast - that would be excellent.
It would be like seeing Sony Playstation 4 alphabetized with P instead of S.
-
Just updated em to include Sega.

lolz well what about nintendo and everything else. haha
-
oohhhh, love it!! thanks Matt!
I don't think Nintendo would work in this case... that would end up reading like "Nintendo Nintendo Entertainment System"
Now where this could work is for Xbox and Xbox 360.... what do you think.. put them under Microsoft?
thanks again!

Ya, we had a hard time figuring out how to list things like that.
We should prolly put Nintendo in front of the GameCube, Wii and Wii U?
-
I say you guys either unify it one way or the other. Either all consoles are listed under their manufacturer or none are.
I am actually fine either way, but it would create categories like "Entertainment System" instead of "Nintendo Entertainment System" since the official console name was "Entertainment System".
EDIT: Just saw the post by Retromangia. Too funny.

Do you think we should actually start another thread with a name like, "Unify Console Categories" and put our concerns, or is this something you can look in to because you are an admin?
THANKS!
-
I'd say start a new thread. That way it's easily found.

Most of the discussions about categories are in the missing consoles thread (http://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,74.330.html). But a new thread will suffice. I'll make a note of it for Matt, though. He's the one with webmaster powers.

It's been a long time, but I remember us having this discussion in the very beginning. It was decided to list the categories by the name they were marketed under. You never saw anything that said "Nintendo Super Nintendo", just "Super Nintendo". Also, I don't seem to remember anyone saying "NEC Turbografx 16". I think it makes sense for the Sega consoles to have "Sega" in front because that is always how I heard them marketed back in the day. It was always "Sega Master System" or "Sega Genesis" etc.

This could get really tricky though. In actuality we would have things like Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Panasonic R.E.A.L 3DO, Family Computer (since Nintendo didn't advertise with their name in front or label it as Famicom). I guess it comes down to how "marketing" is defined (What was in ads, what was on the system, what was on the box).
I'm an analyst so I get picky over defining things and creating rules that apply to all data. Not trying to start any fights - just giving my opinion.

What if we had sub categories under the main categories... like this:
Nintendo ->
> Nintendo Entertainment System
> hardware
> software
> accessories
> Super Nintendo
> Nintendo 64
> Gamecube
NEC ->
> Turbo Grafx-16
> Turbo CD
> Turbo Super CD
What does everyone think about that? :)

I think that's the best way of doing it.
