We have a category: UMD Video [NA].

Again only [NA], we also need [EU], [JP] and every other, or we should loose the [NA]
-
Usually on things like this they get added as people suggest them. That's how UMD [NA] got added originally. There was no call for the other regions in the Missing Consoles thread, so I never added them. I'll added EU and JP right now.
-
thx, i will add some tommorow with the [EU].

Why do we list non-gaming-related movies here?
-
Because they are software for a gaming console. As far as I know, these UMD's, CDi videos, and a few GBA videos are all that we are going to list.

Yup, we had a discussion about it in 2012 and it was decided that we should have a separate listing for UMD movies to keep them out of the PSP games list.
Speaking of CDi videos and the GBA videos, should we split those off too? I'm all about keeping the game lists clean, while still keeping all releases for a certain console as accurate as possible.
-
I thought they already were for some reason. It's probably a good idea for the CDi videos to have their own category. How many GBA videos are there? I was under the impression that there weren't very many. Might be a waste of time for them if there's only a few.

Maybe should be created, http://nintendo.wikia.com/wiki/Game_Boy_Advance_Video. I also believe there's several different of them for each series. I know Pokémon have 4 or 5.

The (Nikko) Digiblast has also some movies. I only have 2 so no need to add them yet.

We also have some non-gaming stuff for consoles!
We have King James Bible For Use On Game Boy (http://vgcollect.com/item/14229), several instances of Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia, and so on. Of course we won't list this sort of stuff for PCs. But it's okay for consoles since they're part of their library.

Yeah.
Seems like if we're listing & tracking the UMD movies ("because they're the same type of format as games are for the PSP")...then...wouldn't we have to allow all DVD'S, CD'S, Blu ray's, etc - ("since they're all on the same format as games are on the PS1, PS2, PS3, etc, etc)? :P

If the CDs, DVDs and Blurays have console - or PC - gaming specific features, then they're allowed. Like for example, I own a couple of DVDs that also contain demos for the Xbox - on the same disc as the movie. (They already go in the database since they're movies based on games.) And then there's Ed Hunter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Hunter) - an Iron Maiden album that came with a full-fledged video game for Windows. (An on-rails shooter, but still, a game!) I'm aware there's enhanced CD albums that contain stuff like slideshows and maybe some web browser games... I don't feel those belong here.
And apparently some Bluray movies also contain PS3 demos. Or at least they did back in 2009.

I would think that since UMD movies could only be played on a PSP, that would be the deciding factor.

Agreed.

I can live with it - no biggie, or anything ;D
...but..."movies" :P
-
You know, as far as UMD movies are concerned, I'm sure there is some guy out there that wants every UMD video ever released for the PSP. And if said guy Googles "UMD Movie PSP Collection" or something and comes here, all the better.
For what it's worth, I consider UMD movies (as much as I find them useless) to be part of the PSP's library. They aren't games, sure. But Sony did utilize it's proprietary UMD format to release another form of media for their handheld. Now, that doesn't mean we should list every DVD ever released because the PS2 and up can play them. But the PSP, CDi and a few select others would be an exemption.

What about the beginning of last gen; then?
PS3 was the only system that could play BD movies (just like the PSP w/ UMD's:) -
Should/could we also list all BD movies from that time then?
What if there's a device that does nothing but PLAY UMD movies...do they then no longer qualify? :o
I'm not mad, or anything - I just like playing Devil's Advocate...sometimes ;)
-
But Blu-Rays don't come in PlayStation 3 branded cases and there were Blu-Ray specific players available. The UMDs are branded for the PSP and no other official means of playing them exists, as far as I'm aware of.
-
And UMD movies don't only play on PSP's ;)
Check your PSN messages (I took a screen shot from my PS3) & forwarded it to ya'...
...OR...just Google "UMD players" - it's far from anything close to being exclusive to the PSP :o
So...just like movies on any/every other mediums; no?
-
Here's a link showing that UMD's can be played by things "NOT-PSP" ==>

All I see are pictures of PSPs, replacement cases, disc keepers, knockoff PSP lookalikes that only load digital content, and images of PSVitas from articles where it's stated that Vitas don't support UMDs. It IS possible to "rip" the contents of these discs and play them back. But no standalone, non-PSP UMD players exist anywhere in retail form. Apparently Sony did have one on display at one point (see here (http://variety.com/2006/digital/news/a-pause-in-the-action-1117938320/)) but nothing was ever released.
And yes I did check past the first page.
-
also shows the PSGo's playing em...

And what did I say earlier?
It IS possible to "rip" the contents of these discs and play them back.
You can copy the contents from a UMD by dumping the disc, but this involves homebrew, which isn't an official solution to playing UMD content on other PSP models. So my point stands.

PS3 was the only system that could play BD movies (just like the PSP w/ UMD's:) -
PS3 was released November 11, 2006 in Japan, Nov. 17 in the US. The Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray player was released on June 25, 2006 in the US. 8)

Right.
But, it couldn't also play GAMES like the PSP / PS3 (ie a 'gaming' system) 8)

Why would a Samsung Blu-Ray player play PS3 games?

It wouldn't = my point all along...just cuz a GAMING System plays movies /=/ those movies having anything at all to do with gaming.
And...with that, I'm walking my pasty white ass right on out of this topic because I've already given waaaaaayyyy more of my time talking about people who do/don't want to count movies as part of their video game collection ==> *Really*, I just don't care...it's not like I worry about anyone else's collection being "right"; other than my own, that is. so...
Vaya con Dios, buena suerte, y todo la otra mierde ;D

If the item can only be played on a gaming console then it should be considered an item that can be collected. Same as other things.
I've openly expressed dislike about certain items being included in the database, especially reproduction carts, since long before I became an admin here. If it was up to me I wouldn't let anyone list those. I also don't like the CDI movies much. :P And yet, here we are.
As far as I'm aware there isn't any other site that lets people catalog their UMD Movie collection. So why don't we let people do that here? I'm sure it'll help us gain a bit of exposure with the Sony collectors. It's a win-win thing in my opinion.
Since both of us seem to be going around in circles and the discussion doesn't seem to be going anwhere else, I'm locking this thread.
