Title: Video Game Crafts
Post by: anruiukimi on March 09, 2014, 01:20:00 pm
If there's been a general thread before, my apologies!

So crafts. What do people have? Not all of us make crafty stuff, but a lot of us have gotten crafts and other lovely things. I figured I would post a general thread for us to show off either our own work, or gifts :)

-----------------

First off is two lovely video game crafts I've been given. I got Citan back in 2000? from one of my best friends, and the Drakee pillow in 2012 from the other. :D

Citan/Shitan is, of course, from Xenogears. She knew I really liked his character, so she surprised me with him for my birthday. :D Still has a place of honor in my room!

The other was made as a crafty gift suggestion, and it's really cute! It stays on my bed. :)

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FITnln5lvBQ/UxyWw-AF7_I/AAAAAAAALM0/y3ZyZgE3bz8/w1598-h899-no/20140309_092841.jpg) (https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-qPEcroxMna4/UxyW9A3palI/AAAAAAAALNA/oa1gfRh8wCY/w1598-h899-no/20140309_092930.jpg)

-----------------------

Now for the required bead crafts...I've made quite a few more of these, including multiple DQ ones that are in the other room, but I'll have to post pictures of them later. These are just the few that are in my room at the moment.

Now, these are are video game...related? They are all in video games! :D

I went on a bit of a pony spree for a bit, and now have multiple headless ponies. It's very sad. But here's my Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Agent Coulson, and Clint Barton ponies.

(Not a great shot of Coulson, sorry.)

-------------------------------

I've got other stuff, but this is what I have at hand at the moment. What do you all do?

Oooo, you do the giant ones! :D Very cool! You have more patience than I, that's for sure. xD

The biggest one I've ever had the patience for was a king slime and a Sailor Moon chibi...I wonder if I can find a picture of it. :D

Do you just iron one side? I'm curious. :)

Edit: Ah, here's an old shot:

Yep, anywhere from 3 to 4 hours or longer depending on what I'm doing for the big ones lol I love when the big ones are done, but ironing is actually the most annoying part to me as it can be hard to get middle sections to fuse along with the outer edges.  Always annoying.

I use the masking tape method which is you do your beading, put layers of masking tape to hold it all together, puncture every spot with a bead, and then iron the other side to fuse it together.  I personally like the bead side shown to the fused side.  Don't know why, heh.  The masking tape method is great for making sure your peg boards don't get ruined.

My most recently posted one is of the greatest game character of any generation, E.T.!

And my newest one.  Probably gonna do some more of Pac-Man here from his SNES adventure just because there are an absolute ton of different animations for him in it.

Anruiukimi, your ponies are so awesome! Did you make the pattern yourself?

And kamikazekeeg, the Tyrantrum and Leonardo are so crazy!

I started following you both :) I don't know if you're like me (posting in a 1-week-spree once every 2 years), but hey :P

I post a couple new pieces every week myself lol Sometimes abit less if I'm working on a really big one which is only every few weeks because the large ones can be rather draining, to the point that if I get tired of that, I'll work on a smaller one to sorta clean the palette before going back to it.

I heavily altered it from a pattern made for plush deer? xD It was awhile back, and while it's still not perfect, I at least need to get my remaining ponies done. I have a headless Black Widow, a headless Pinkie Pie, a completely cut out Nick Fury, and a headless AND tailless Rainbow Dash.

You are like me on DA, from the sound of it :P

Several years ago I used a pinball playfield as a centerpiece for a coffee table:

Am almost done building another one for Super!BitCon. The image below is a dry fit of the trim. Had to mark it all to start cutting the slots for the biscuit joints and what-not. The top frame that will hold the glass can be seen just off to the left.

Then I've also made several arcade marquee light boxes that I've sold at past game conventions. This photo was taken at OVGE 2012 (started off with seven). I still have a few that I'll be bringing out to S!BC.

My mother has recently resurrected a project I began about five years ago that I dubbed "pixel pillows." She's been going to town sewing (much better than I can) and will have a number of them at S!BC (assuming I don't snag a few for my couch first  ;D ). The space invader is the most recent one in the works.

Pixel quilting is straight forward, if actually somewhat difficult. Too many squares~~~ :P

Well, this thread has inspired me.  I'm gonna track down an arcade marquee that I am nostalgic for (leaning towards either Black Tiger or Magic Sword) and build a lightbox for it.  Should be a fun project, and will look great in my game room!  :)

Ya I'm going to do the same for my Neo Geo marquee. Thinking of making it battery powered with LEDs to help save on the battery life. That way I can still keep it above my game room door w/o any cords dangling.

But, it's not like I don't already have a bunch of game related crafting projects going. >_>

I'll never forget the first time I discovered that machine.  I had went on a youth church trip to go ice skating for some reason, even tho I didn't ice skate.  :P  So while everyone else was skating I discovered a side room that had a Black Tiger machine and maybe a foosball table.  I fell in love with Black Tiger the first time I played it.   ;D

That's a great idea about using LED's & making it battery powered.  Hrm, if I went that route I'd have to make 2 and put one over each of my 2 closet doors - guess I'm getting both BT & MS then!

BTW, are there pros & cons for original vs. reproduction marquees when making these lightboxes?

Post by: scott on March 13, 2014, 04:21:12 pm
If you want to go reproductions. Look at Game On Grafix (linky (http://www.gameongrafix.com/categories/marquees-repro)), these are the folks I go through when I do my MAME cabinets. Last time I got one made was for my Retrotron: 1984 build and I did their "Ultimate mounted on Plexi" it was like $40+ bucks or somethign but looks great.

Alternatively, you can order just the marquee w/ an adhesive backing and put it on your own plexi too.

Black Tiger is the game I grew up playing in the arcade. I spent every day's lunch money for school on Black Tiger in the morning and starved all day long but I didnt care. :)

Id love a light marquee box myself.

Pixel quilting is straight forward, if actually somewhat difficult. Too many squares~~~ :P

I occasionally hear a bunch of grumbling from the sewing room/spare bedroom... I go to check in on her and she's tearing out a bunch of stitches because the squares were not lining up again. She's getting quite a bit better and faster at putting these together and keeps asking me for more 8-bit sprites to print out for reference.  ;D

Thinking of making it battery powered with LEDs to help save on the battery life. That way I can still keep it above my game room door w/o any cords dangling.

I looked into going the LED route when I started building them. Opted to go with a fluorescent lamp instead due to too many questions about the LED beam angles, hot spots, brightness and price. Now days the prices have dropped substantially, they're brighter than ever and a diffuser could be used to help eliminate beam angle and hot spot issues. I'll probably keep using the fluorescent tubes to keep prices down on the units I take to conventions but would likely go the LED route for my personal marquee boxes.

I did a bunch of Mario's based on the main NES/SNES Mario's last night for the retro game shop I visited who said he'd be interested in a bunch for the store to show off and to sell for himself and I get trade in credit towards games there which is more than cool with me lol

This one is kinda cool though as it shows big and small mario throughout the early years.

Worked hard the past week or so on some new stuff, most of it to sell at the retro game store I've been going to as the dude loves like custom fan art stuff.  It's really cool knowing my stuff is getting put up lol

With that, I did one specifically for the store which is 8 Bit Hall of Fame down in Bonita Springs, Florida.  It was my longest piece at 35" and around 3500 to 4000 beads.  The second one I just finished and it is epic, my biggest piece by far with 7500 beads and 36" long, the Mega Man title shot from the first game looks amazing.  The third I did last week which is Mega Man from the Rock Man version of the games title screen.  Such big Mega Man pieces and I'm not even a huge fan of the original NES ones lol Good games, but I loved how the art looked.

I did the Mega Man and 8 Bit Hall of Fame one in about a night, but I did the Mega Man title over two nights and then ironed it the next day. I'm not sure of the exact time because I take breaks and stuff, but it's at least 5 to 6 hours for just beading.

I basically just pop in a podcast and work on them for a few hours straight.  I do get into this kind of zone that way where it's just not a big thing and can do it for awhile, though I have found out that constant nights of doing the large projects start to wear me down and can't keep doing stuff like that as over the past week, I did basically 4 bigger pieces that add up to around 20k in beads and that's alot of time spent beading lol

I have two, actually, I sell patches on Etsy for extra cash :) (In my sig) I bought my second HV Designer 1 on ebay for only $650, so not too bad :D

Thank you! I'm thinking of some other ideas. If I can smooth out the kinks in the design, I can probably make them for sale. :) Myself and a friend tested these two all the way to Vegas and back this weekend (just got back about 2 hours ago) and they worked out great, so yay!

That's a great idea :)  I've been sewing a few things here and there to open up an etsy store too, but I'm really busy so it's kinda hard to know when I'll be able to. I still haven't really figured out a name for the shop anyway  :o
