As hot as retro gaming is right now, why do you think more companies haven't jumped on the idea of retro collections on disc? The Sonic's Genesis Collection sold pretty well, I think. Midway seems to do one for every system.
Capcom could do a Mega Man Collection every generation and it would sell plenty of copies. Where's the Castlevania Collection? Konami has an endless number of games that they could dump onto a disc and have me jump on.
What do ya'll think? Any collections you'd like to see released?
-
Square Enix released a 25th anniversary compilation of Dragon quest games but it never made it over here. I would have liked to see that here.
I think a really updated Mario collection would go over well. All the NES/SNES/N64 games on one disk.
With the recent release of FFX/X-2 HD out, I think FF I-IX on one disk would be fantastic.
All the original Metal gear games pre-PS3.
Im sure I could go on and on about this. :)

I'm with you on the Mario Collection. The 25th anniversary was a joke. They dropped the ball on that one.
And Metal Gear does have one: http://vgcollect.com/item/45466 (http://vgcollect.com/item/45466)
-
I didnt know about that one. But it mentions Metal Gear solid. Does it have the first 2 from the NES on it? The first one is the best one!
-
Konami doesn't put effort into anything except Metal Gear anymore, so a Castlevania collection, or at least one that's done properly (like with the Lords of Shadow collection which is just Lords of Shadow 1 and a voucher for everything else), probably won't happen. But I would love to have one.
Capcom doesn't seem to like making money anymore, even though they could just re-release the same Mega Man collection every generation like Namco does with their thing and the Mega Man fanatics would buy them all up, so probably won't happen for a while at least.
Nintendo, as much as I love them and think they get a huge amount of unnecessary flack, definitely are weird when it comes to stuff like this. But it's possible Mario could get something since even Kirby got a(n awesome) collection. But then there has been a (sorta) Zelda collection that was on the Gamecube, but if I recall that was a promotional thing and not a lot of effort was put into it or anything. Still nice to have the ~4 games on one disc though.
I believe Square Enix released a collection of Final Fantasy I-IX in Japan. Kinda weird we didn't get it considering how much people in the west just eat up the earlier titles. But then again, those are all also quite easily available by other means.
Really there are tons of possibilities here that it's strange you don't see more of these released. Especially if it's not a remastered sort of thing. The Kirby collection is great, as well as the Metal Gear one and it seems like it wouldn't take a lot of effort or a lot of money to produce these and they're pretty much guaranteed to sell decently.
On a similar subject, I've wondered why hardware companies never re-release any of their legacy consoles. Retro gaming is so huge right now, and you've got plenty of people buying those Retron consoles as a cheap alternative, why couldn't Nintendo do a small run of new NESes? Or Atari manufacture some more 2600s? I can't imagine it would cost very much to manufacture these and they would sell insanely. I know it would be more difficult for Atari and probably even Sega given they are merely a fraction of what they used to be, but they could probably partner with someone. Can you imagine buying a brand new SNES or Genesis? Awesome.

Yes, but they're the superior MSX versions. It's also worth noting that Metal Gear Solid 1 is not included on disc - you have to download it. Not too big of a deal since they really packed in a ton of content and MGS1 is still fairly easily accessible if you don't already have it.
-
To me, for these collections to be really worth it they have to put the effort in. I don't just want straight ports of the games - tho that's clearly a key aspect of a set. I also want documentaries, behind the scenes info, concept art, promotional art - the works. These companies should make us believe they care about their franchises at least as much as we do.
-
I freaking love these things! You get so much bang for your buck. I own a ton of them. Like the only one left I still really want is Intellivision Lives. I could go for the Zelda Collector's Edition too, except I already own all of those games other than Majora's Mask.
But unfortunately I think the time for these has passed. Now there's PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, and Wii Virtual Console. Companies can make far more money by charging people per game that way, than they can making collections.
If they did make a comeback, though, here's what I'd want to see the most (Konami sorely needs some):
The Nintendo NES Collection
-Donkey Kong
-Donkey Kong Jr.
-Donkey Kong 3
-Dr. Mario
-Golf
-Kid Icarus
-The Legend of Zelda 1 & 2
-Metroid
-Pinball
-Punch-Out!
-Super Mario Bros. 1-3
-Tetris
-Wrecking Crew
The Super Nintendo Collection:
-Donkey Kong Country 1-3
-F-Zero
-The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
-SimCity (not sure if they could include this or not, with licensing rights, but Nintendo originally released the SNES version)
-StarFox
-Super Mario Kart
-Super Mario RPG
-Super Mario World
-Super Metroid
-Yoshi's Island
The Konami Kollection:
-Bucky 'O Hare
-Castlevania 1-4
-Contra 1 & 3
-Jackal
-Super C
-Metal Gear
-Snake's Revenge
-TMNT 1-3 (Do they still have the TMNT license? Didn't they have a hand in the PS2/GameCube TMNT games? If not, then I guess this wouldn't work)
The Castlevania Crypt:
-Castlevania 1-4
-Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
-Castlevania: Bloodlines
-Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
-Castlevania 64
-Castlevania: Adventure
-Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge
-Castlevania: Legend
The Contra Killer Pack:
-Contra (NES version)
-Super C
-Contra III: The Alien Wars
-Contra: Hard Corps
-C: The Contra Adventure
-Contra: Legacy of War
-Operation C
Star Soldier Collection:
-Star Force
-Star Soldier
-Super Star Soldier
-Soldier Blade
-Final Soldier
-Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth
-Star Parodier

Why would they, they could sell each game for 2-10 dollars on the virtual console.
I would love to see a best of commodore 64 or 'the hidden gems of the 3do'
-
It would be really awesome to get some good sets of retro games on one disc.

I would buy something like this in a heartbeat. A brand new version, maybe a little modernized for a mixture of new and old and it comes with a couple newer versions of some of their hits on new carts, like Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, and probably Donkey Kong with replica display boxes. The SNES could be very much the same with Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, and maybe like Super Metroid. An N64 version would be the peak for me with how much I love that lol

I understand what you're saying, but there seems to still be a market for these collections. Look at how many PS2 collections have been released on PS3. The Sega Collection on Xbox 360 was popular enough to be re-released as a Platinum Hit.
-
I don't think Nintendo would do a collection, (I know they did the 25 anniversary but that was a joke. It was just Super Mario All-stars on a disc.) because there's more money to be made by selling each game individually for 5 dollars a pop. As of late they've been trying to promote download sales as well so putting everything on one disc for a low flat rate would seem counterproductive.
I would like to see that however.
-
as long as they are as awesome as this one I will buy
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/02/Sonic_Ultimate_Genesis_Collection.jpg)
-
And here's an example of an awful one.
... why isn't this in my collection? I've had this crap for years.
-
Would love to see a Mega Man Legends collection (Legends 1 and 2, and Tron Bonne).
-
Capcom would probably announce that once Mega Man Legends 3 is unveiled... Just like Valve would announce a Lambda Box (Half-Life Collection) when Half-Life 3 is released. ::)
-

Exactly. They have so many more places to sell those games now, like phones & tablets. The heyday of those was the PS2 generation before all the online stores, I think the Taito Legends 2 was probably the greatest. What I would like is for Nintendo to do one of their old arcade games like Donkey Kong and Punch Out!, I don't know why it's so hard to get a great home version of Donkey Kong?

How about a disc with:
Donkey Kong (Arcade, Atari 2600, NES and Revisited version)
Donkey Kong JR (Arcade, NES and Revisited version)
Donkey Kong 3 (Arcade, NES and Revisited version)
Donkey Kong JR Math (Take it or leave it ;))
Donkey Kong 64 (Enhanced version)
The Donkey Kong Construction Set (Made Up)
Donkey Kong Library ^^
-
^ If they're gonna do that, I think it should include the Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Land games. They're small enough, and great games.
-
Is there a double dragon compilation disc?
-
It's be nice if they did. But the Double Dragon games are so hit or miss. The first one was great, the 2nd one sucked because of the weird right/left attack controls, the 3rd one got back on track, then the first SNES entry got goofy. And so on.
-
I asked this in my Neo Geo post but just in case any one on this post did not see it, any good Neo Geo compilation discs?
-
BTW, Target has the Genesis Collection for the PS3 (maybe 360 as well, not sure) on sale for $10.50. Cheapest I've seen it - I ordered one this morning for in-store pickup and its waiting on me now. :)
-
Is there a double dragon compilation disc?
Nope, the better Double Dragon games are on the NES and for some reason nobody ever seems to want to emulate those games outside of Nintendo systems.
I asked this in my Neo Geo post but just in case any one on this post did not see it, any good Neo Geo compilation discs?
Yes, and no. The better game sets were on the PS2, released under this series in Japan:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo_Geo_Online_Collection
Of those, we got the Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, World Heroes and Samurai Shodown Anthology sets, as well as KOF '98 Ultimate Match, released in the USA. The Garou, Last Blade, KOF Orochi / Nests, Sunsoft and Fu'un discs were not released overseas. There's also ADK Tamashii which has some ADK games (Ninja Commando, Ninja Combat, Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Twinkle Star Sprites, and Ninja Master's.)
SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1 on the PS2 has quite a few emulation and censorship issues but it has some decent games and bonuses. I've heard the Wii version fixed several speed issues, but I have not confirmed that personally.
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, GET KOF: THE OROCHI SAGA (US version) ON THE PS2. IT'S CRAP, WE SHOULD'VE GOTTEN THE JAPANESE SETS, BUT SNK PEE SUCKS AND WE GOT THAT CRAP INSTEAD.

I've heard people mention emulation issues on the SNK Arcade Classics collection on PS2. I have the game and freaking love it. I've never had any major issues with the games while playing them. But then, I've never owned an actual MVS or AES to compare, either.
There's also a Metal Slug Anthology and Samurai Shodown Anthology on PS2 & Wii. As well as a King of Fighters collection, but I recently heard someone say it was terrible, on this site. I've never played the KoF one, so I can't vouch for it. However the Metal Slug one is great run-n-gun action! I highly recommend it!

i want to see more remakes like ducktales.
i thought that was really well done

Is that just a issue w/ the PS2 version? Because I picked the Wii version up a couple weeks back & played just a little of it to make sure it ran ok, and I didn't notice any issues like that.

I only speak of experience with the PS2 versions. I cannot say if the Wii versions have issues, but it's likely they don't, because Terminal Reality most likely fixed all the bugs they left in the PS2 versions by then. :p

Again, it seems to play fine to me. But again, I don't have an AES or MVS to compare it to. But I do have Metal Slug 3 on Xbox Live Arcade, and it seems no different than that version. My buddy also has Metal Slug 4 & 5 on original Xbox, and I didn't notice a big difference between those, either.
I'm sure he's right and there is some slight lag, since I don't know any better compared to the real version. But it really isn't anything that breaks the game. Me and friends have blasted through a few play-throughs on that collection and had a ton of fun.

I have the Wii version of MSA, and it works fine, even with Wavebird controllers.

Has anyone here had any experience with the PSP versions of those four SNK compilations? Would the issues with the console versions be made worse on the PSP?

So I was going through the games I picked up this weekend and testing them last night. I popped in the Activision Anthology for the PS2, which I stumbled across at a Gamestop for about $0.65. And man, this is a REALLY impressive collection! It's not the emulation that's impressive - let's face it, it doesn't take much to emulate Atari 2600 games ;) - or the selection, which is pretty much every Activision game ever released for the 2600. It's everything they did AROUND the games that really puts it over the top. When you start the game, the main menu is a room setup like it's from the 80's. One of the first things I noticed was a radio that was playing classic 80's songs. That alone is impressive, because who goes out of their way to license music for a retro collection?
When you actually play the games, as you progress in each one you start unlocking things. At first it's simple stuff like weird play modes (first one I unlocked was a "tilt" mode that constantly tilts the screen at different angles - weird, and not really conducive to playing a game. ;) But the second thing I unlocked (playing River Raid) was the original TV ad for the game. Now that was VERY cool! I'm really wanting to put more time into the set now to see what other goodies are hidden there, and that's saying something because I thought I had played all of the 2600 I ever wanted to in my lifetime. :P Oh, one other cool touch I noticed - pressing the triangle button will toggle you between color & black & white mode, so if you gamed on a b/w tv back in the day you can even recreate that experience. Just very, very cool.
-
^ The 80s bedroom is the best touch.

It's too bad they had to cut out some stuff. (http://tcrf.net/Activision_Anthology_%28PlayStation_2%29)
(I created that page and found all that info on my own.)

Know how I said I freaking love these things earlier in the thread? I was serious. Here's my compilation collection, there's really only a small handful out there I still want.
-Activision Anthology
-Atari Anthology
-Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1 & 2
-Capcom Classics Collection Mini Mix
-Data East Arcade Classics
-Dungeons & Dragons Anthology: The Master Collection
-Mega Man Anniversary Collection
-Mega Man X Collection
-Metal Slug Anthology
-Midway Arcade Treasures Vol. 1 & 2, & Vol. 3: Racing
-Namco Museum
-Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottileb Collection
-Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection
-Raiden Fighters Aces
-Sega Classics Collection (Sega Ages Collection)
-Sega Genesis Collection
-SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1
-Sonic Gems Collection
-Sonic Mega Collection Plus
-Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Colleciton
-Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
-Super Mario All-Stars
-Taito Legends 1 & 2
-Tecmo Classic Arcade
I still want:
-Gradius III & IV
-Intellivision Lives
-Mega Man Zero Collection
-R-Types
-Raiden Project
-Samurai Shodown Anthology
-Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
And I probably should upgrade my Namco Museum to Namco Museum: 50th Anniversary. I already tried on PS2, but found it's incompatible with my model of PS2 Slim. So I have to find an XBox copy.
-
I should start picking these up. Its probably a good way to get a bunch of games for cheap.

You can call the Nes Remix games as "Retro Collection Discs" since there coming to retail stores

Isn't just mini-games thrown at you one after the other? You can't actually play the games in full, can you?

You can't play full games.
How badass would it be if you could unlock each full game. Maybe once you finish each set of challenges you unlock the full game. That would give you some serious bang for your buck.
-
Hm, I really love these too but the only ones I own right now are the Mega Drive Ultimate Collection on PS3 and Sonic Mega Collection Plus for the PS2. It's quite cool being able to play the Game Gear Sonic games on PS2 with the Mega Collection but the port of Sonic 1 on Mega Drive was really bad in my case. It's really slowed down to a grind, which obviously is bad for a Sonic game :P
I'd like to see a really good Sonic collection, with everything from the Mega Collection and the Gems Collection, plus a few others like Adventure and Heroes. It'd be a stretch but I know I'd pay bloody good money for it.
Some other collections I'd like are:
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Collection:
Tony Hawk's Skateboarding (Pro Skater 1)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4
And then maybe have the PS1 versions of 3 and 4 as well
id Collection:
Wolfenstein 3D
Doom
Doom II
Quake
Quake II
Master System Ultimate Collection:
Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic 2
R - Type
Alien Syndrome
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Shinobi
World Grand Prix
Golden Axe

... oh god you made me remember that Metal Slug one. If you enjoy waiting a third of a second for your button presses to register, then it's for you!

...wow making a hash tag joke feels wrong. but outside of games where will you ever hear someone complain about less than a second?

When that less than a second means you're gonna die because your timing is off because SNK Pee hired a goddamn incompetent developer to make the port instead of doing it in-house or even hiring someone good like G1M2?
DAMN RIGHT I'M GONNA COMPLAIN.

Wow - so I was browsing one of my local Gamestops today and I saw this:
Includes 15 classic arcade games:
BurgerTime
Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory (the rare sequel to Burger Time)
Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja
Burnin' Rubber
Caveman Ninja
Crude Buster
Express Raider
Heavy Barrel
Lock n' Chase
Magical Drop III - Secret Agent
Side Pocket
Street Hoop
Super Real Darwin
Wizard Fire
I didn't know that existed, and would have snatched it on the spot (it was only $7) but it was disk only, so I passed. When I just went to find that cover image to post here, however, I discovered that apparently it's rare - the cheapest disk-only copy listed on Ebay is listed for $30, and the Gamestop stock tracker says there's not another one within 100 miles of me. So looks like I'm going to break my "no disk-only Wii games" policy this once and go pick that up tomorrow. Looks like a really cool collection! :D

I've got this one. Pretty fun collection. But as you play through it you begin to understand why they're no longer around. There's a lot of sameness, almost copy and paste stuff going on between these games.

Doom 3 BFG edition is pretty good. It includes proper ports of Doom 1 & 2 and can be played multiplayer online or split screen.
My son and I play this one coop.
