Games everyone loves but you hate?

It's like this thread was made specifically so people can start arguing about Metroid Prime again. :P

To bad I missed it, I hate metroid.

Eh, too easy and broad of a topic. I think it would've been better if it was more what you love, but everyone else doesn't like.
I guess for me it's Super Mario Galaxy, both of them, though I say that I don't HATE them. After Mario 64 and even Sunshine, I just didn't like some choices they made with the games, such as removing the hub world. I need to go back and give them another try since my initial try of them as I'm sure I'm alright with the games now for what they are.

Yeah I got bored it was well made and everything but not so fun after awhile.

Sunshine I didn't like at first, but going back, it's still a pretty good game. The water pack I think is what people may not have liked. Galaxy for me, I just wasn't really into the setting and how they were getting rid of what made the 3D games stand out with the hub world and basically large settings that you explore in different ways for the old Mario 3 linear line world layout, which is dumb. Leave that for the small 2D games, not the big 3D stuff!

I couldn't get into Metal Gear Solid 4 either.
Didn't care much for the Grand Theft Auto games as well.
-
If I had played any of the other Metal Gear Solid Games before I played MGS4, I feel like I wouldn't really have enjoyed it. I don't think I'd call it a bad game, but it's nothing compared to Metal Gear Solid 3, or even 2 for that matter.

I'd take 4 over 2, I really don't like 2 lol

Is it the weird camera angle you don't like, or is it Raiden? :P

Off the top of my head, I don't remember exactly, I don't think I had a serious issue with either of them, I just wasn't very into the game that much. I loved 3 and enjoyed 4.
-
I don't think I hate it.... but Wind Waker, I remember everyone talking crap about it during the gamecube days, and I really liked it, playing through the HD version, it's good but far from being the best Zelda game.
I also don't like Capcom's newer fighters. MvC 3 is an absolute joke, you don't even have to try with that game
SSIV is a good fighter but I don't think it's near as good as any three versions of Street Fighter 3
-
Metal Gear Solid 4 may be nothing compared to its predecessors, but if you played it without playing 1-3 first you have no one to blame but yourself. Also 4 had the best ending boss in the series next to The Boss in MGS3.
As for me, I'm not big on any MOBA games. Just can't get into them.

Assassin's creed series... It's bad.
-
Assassin's creed series... It's bad.
I agree, but I don't like any stealth-based games, really. Me and stealth just don't do well together. Usually I get bored and just try to take people out like a bad-ass in an action game, and I die.
-
Assassin's creed series... It's bad.

Assassin's creed series... It's bad.
Yeah, a lot of people I know constantly rave about how great the series is and how they have every single installment. To be honest, it's not a series I really care about or feeling like getting into after testing a few of them with other people.

Everything with Pokémons ;D
and all (J)RPGs with sooo sooo bruuutal slooowww *zzz-chrrr* stooory telling and ultra-yeah-hip-cool-styler-characters where I can't tell if it's a girl, dude or an alien 8) (16-Bit JRPGs not included, I love those :D)

Hahaha. In reality I don't hate the Pokemon series. Never played any of em. I just didn't want to exert the mental effort to come up with my list. ;)

Hate is a little strong. But I don't really find Grand Theft Auto or Mega Man fun.

I think I only think of mm1 the way I do because I played it after mega man 3.

That's because MM1 is balls hard. Damn, that game's hard.
I don't like Final Fantasy anything past FF3 (or FF6 if you want to be a dick about it :P).
I don't like any Sonic game either.
-
I was also going to say Assassin's Creed. I've tried two of them and got bored with both. Just can't get into them at all.
This one might ruffle some feathers, but I also didn't like Mass Effect. I didn't hate it, but I certainly lost interest in it pretty quickly.

Minecraft.
I've tried it, multiple times, and I just can't get into it. I tried creation mode and survival mode and just ended up turning it off in annoyance. I think it's pretty much the closest thing I've got for hating a game.

Same here. I get bored very easily in that game. And graphics are weird. I get what they're going for, this retro-style. But it looks even more basic than old PS1 and Saturn 3D games.
-
Thats part of the problem. I can't handle the first gen 3D graphics much anymore. I rarely crack open my PS1, Saturn or N64 3d games much lately.

I play PS1 and Saturn games, ALL THE TIME. But Minecraft is worse. It's something that would have been on 3DO, or maybe even 32X or Sega CD (albeit with less textures, probably).

I agree I don't see what the big deal is either. It's funny people slag off retro game graphics then go play minecraft afterwards.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
This seems to be many fans' favorite, and from what I understand it is due to its open-world nature and how explorative it is. But to me, having to sail around for what feels like an eternity, with nothing but blue as far as the eye can see, having to whip out the Wind Waker every single time I wanna change direction, and when I finally find land (that is not plot important, you know, exploration), it is often a little baby island with no interest. And no, the Warp Tornados doesn't make it less tedious to travel around.
On the contrary, I love Phanton Hourglass, because there is less map to sail around in, and the fact that you have a steamboat this time, requiring no constant stop-ups when needing to change direction, all you need is draw a line^_^
On top of that, I would have like having to go through dungeons in order to earn the Triforce pieces, but instead they made it into a mere treasure hunt.
These days the fan fight of which game is overrated, lies between Majora and Ocarina, but to me, both games are great and has done equally much for the franchise to deserve their praise. So while fans are bickering between those two, I stand over here and dislike the game that everyone else agrees is a masterpiece xD
I am not terribly fond of A Link to the Past either, but I freakin' love A Link Between Worlds :3
-
I really want to like Wind Waker, but I agree with you on the boat thing. Every time I try to play the game I just get bored and/or frustrated. Phantom Hourglass was not as bad, but I still did not enjoy the travelling and did not finish it. Plus replaying the same parts of the Temple of the Ocean King was annoying.

The Call of Duty/Battlefield series... Because obvious choice is obvious but seriously I could just never get into the Modern Military shooters.
also some series that I've just grown bored of to the point I'm Hating them are Gears of War, and Assassin's Creed

As someone who owns all the AC games, buys the collector's editions, and basically has a wall dedicated to it....it's not that great :P It's pretty much the same game each year, and I'll freely admit it. But I enjoy it enough to keep buying it, so fair play to Ubisoft. Of course, that means I can't rag on CoD fans since I do basically the same thing.
I wouldn't say there is any popular games I "hate", but I'll admit something that may revoke my gamer card - I've never beaten a Zelda game >_> Nothing against them, but I just can't seem to stay interested long enough to beat them (in all fairness, I've only played the original, Link's Awakening, and a small part of Twilight Princess).
Also not a big Smash fan. I'd much rather play almost any other fighting game - Ergheiz included.

What does "DOTA" stand for?

Defense of the Ancients

I've never heard of it.

I've never heard of it.
I would imaging the Dota being referred to in this thread is Dota 2, the free to play MOBA thing on Steam and developed by Valve. It's pretty popular now, I guess. Though, there isn't likely you'll hear about it if you aren't fairly active in PC gaming. Here's a link to the Wikipedia page if you want more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dota_2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dota_2)
I don't really like Dota either. The Dota community is terrible in general.
-
I tried DOTA a few times when it was just a mod for Warcraft III. I pretty much hated it. My cousins on the other hand loved it, and are now pretty hooked on League of Legends... I still don't like it haha.
-
Super Metroid. I don't truly hate it but I can't see what's so great about it. I used to own it, but every time I tried to play it, I ended up thinking "ughhhhh...I don't have time for this". I thought the GBA ones were really fun though. I also lost interest in the "Metroidvania" Castlevania games around when they started with the DS ones, it's pretty much the same stuff over and over, just milking SOTN.

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. The first Sonic Adventure is WAY better
Really?! I stick think its a pretty decent game for what it is and what it offers. Still better than Sonic Heroes.
-
True but I found Sonic Adventure 2 Battle to very repetitive and difficult. They took the whole "Adventure" aspect away and the Knuckles and Tails levels were a mess.

Yeah, I can agree that they pretty much give each character the same designated goal for each mission, and how some of the difficulty is added because the stupid radar system for Knuckles was broken. The only reason I went back to it was to mess around with some glitches in the game, which they mostly patched up in this re-release, since the original allows you to do some major clipping through walls and just break the game.

I don't hate but I think the Final Fantasy series is highly overrated.
Had a PC and played RPG's on it. Everyone kept raving about FF and how much I would love it. It plays like a simplified pre-EA Ultima game. I was used to games taking forever and the NES FF's I could win in a couple days.
True Story: A friend bet me $50 I couldn't beat the SNES FF game in two days. 46 hours and some change later I took his money.

I totally agree. There are much better RPGs out there, yet FF is treated as the be-all-end-all of RPGs.

What's wrong with bioshock?
What's wrong with Metroid ?
No 45 degree aiming with your gun. Too dark no sense of direction confusing maze labyrinth like levels, tedious platforming, horrendous amount of backtracking, annoying enemies that you can't seem to shoot, respawning enemies. Generally not really fun for most picking it up today. I haven't really heard much outside of the rhetoric "I played this game as a kid".
It's graphically impressive, sounding, and atmospheric. But this does not make a good game, neither does being iconic.

The treasure hunt mode killed it. If they just stuck to the basics.

Metroid: Zero Mission fixes that. It overhauls the entire game with Super Metroid-esque controls and graphics.

Duck! Here comes the hate!
I totally agree though. I think FF3 (or FF6 if you want to be a dick about it) is a great game. It's one of my favorite RPGs of all time. The rest though? I can go without hearing the words "Final Fantasy" ever again.
Full disclosure: I've only played 1, 2*, 3*, and 7. The others may be fantastic.
*I played the US releases. That's how they were numbered, and that's what's on the label. You can call them 4 & 6, but I won't.

I actually like 9 better than 7. It's worth a try.
FF8 I just couldn't get into at all.

That's like Judging Resident Evil remake for game cube based on the very first PS1 version of the game.
One is the first of it's kind and the best they could do as pioneers in the genre.
The other is the developers showing how badass they are now that they've caught up to technology. :)

Gears of War.
I hate the constant-run-for-cover mechanic of the game. I know it's going for realism, but for me I enjoy a game that's more focused on fun than realism.
-
Racing sims, such as Gran Turismo and Forza series. Personally, I don't really care for the gameplay and mechanics compared to arcade racers which I think offer more in fun factor and replayability, even if those kind of games are very short.
-
Every Mario game on the Wii and Wii U... Only Mario game I'm excited for now is the Mario & Luigi RPG series.
NIS RPGs. Tried to enjoy Phantom Brave but I find I enjoy more of a Final Fantasy Tactics- or Front Mission-esque style of gameplay. I can understand the light-hearted take and humor they're making into the games. I'm just not into it. Wanted to try Witch & The Hundred Knight but I'm hearing some kind of time element and that's what's turning me off on trying the game.
Shenmue, Rogue Galaxy, Brave Fencer Musashi, Ephemeral Fantasia, Dead Rising... Every game with a time element. Not sure if everyone loved these games but people around me do. Anyway, time elements constrict the fun factor because to get the best result, things have to be done in a specific time and manner.

Ikaruga is another one. The game just looks bland to me and the switching color gimmick is just that. It's just not what I play those kinds of games for. Any Treasure game that has a gimmick like that annoys me, especially Silhouette Mirage.

I don't like it either, but that's because it's just too freaking hard for me. But bland is definitely a word I would never use for that game. There's constantly barrages of enemies and enemy-fire coming at you.

Gran Turismo pretty much closed that door for me too. It was harder to get a license in that game than it was in real life. Make it through 3 minutes of grueling technical turns only to be disqualified for going slightly off the road while drifting. No thanks, not my idea of fun.

It's pretty mind blowing if you have been spending your time with Genesis shoot em ups even sega saturn shoot em ups. It's ablity to trick the brain into thinking its a 3d plain with rotational effects is impressive. The enemy patterns are also unique and well designed. I recommend if you want fun out of it is to play a competition with friends to see who can get the highest score.

I had the TG16 growing up & still have it, and still have Blazing Lazers and Soldier Blade. I sold my Saturn a while back but I had Galactic Attack, and the 2 Raystorm Games on my PS1. I prefer those types. I held on to Axelay too. Most of the more modern shooters I play are on the Taito Legends 2 & Wii VC. Raiden Fighters and stuff like that are great too. I can't get into those bullet hell ones, I'm more into shooting things than dodging bullets, maybe that's what I didn't like about Ikaruga.

That's the way things went. Very late into the saturns life most of them were bullet hells, and all the dreamcast ones are bullet hell as far as I know. Those kind of tradional shoot em ups died with toaplan, and the rest. Soldier blade isn't bad a little to easy for me, and i'm not a god or anything.

Well, Toplan pretty much started the bullet hell trend with Batsugun(1993) which started the whole trend, and when the company folded, many of its employees went and founded CAVE which has had an impressive amount of releases in the bullet hell genre, although they haven't made a new shmup since late 2012. The genre was pretty much created for the 2D shooters in order to counter the growing popularity of 3D games by the immense number of bullets on screen. It seems that the mid 90's- mid 00s had a great number of bullet hell shooters released , while today there is a bigger mixture of the old and new styles of shmups available thanks to some re-releases of certain games. Personally, I love shumps and the different gameplay systems for it, so I'm trying to make the genre a centerpiece of my collection.

Go get Grind Stormer for the sega genesis amazing shoot em up, I would say it's the best on the system. It really pushes the system.

The entire pokemon series. Every single pokemon game is rather shitty when you break it down. The core mechanics are extremely basic and the gameplay is broken since some pokemon are significantly better than others. There's no plot or characters. If you want to get into competitive play you have to invest an absurd amount of time because breeding and leveling up stats is unbelievably tedious and time consuming.

Ikaruga is another one. The game just looks bland to me and the switching color gimmick is just that. It's just not what I play those kinds of games for. Any Treasure game that has a gimmick like that annoys me, especially Silhouette Mirage.

Challenge mode is where it's at in Soldier Blade.
