Basically it's the 2002 remake in HD, with some slightly updated features, including a control scheme where if you keep going in the direction of where your analog is going. It's not the perfect scheme, but I like they are altering it. I really had a problem with the pre-Resident Evil 4 games due to their controls, I couldn't stand them at all, so any change to that might make me like them as I only ever beat Dead Aim and Resident Evil 3, though I've played pretty much every single RE game other than maybe Survivor.

From what I've read, it's going to be a digital-only release in North America. :'( That's according to this article: http://www.joystiq.com/2014/08/05/resident-evil-2015-remake/ (http://www.joystiq.com/2014/08/05/resident-evil-2015-remake/)

What? Why? Why not release RE2 or RE3 HD?

They are probably testing the waters and it's better to start from the first one.
Kinda sucks it is digital only, but I'll probably get it.

Digital only. Pass.
I'll stick with the GameCube release.
-
I'll probably get it too - I have the Gamecube version, so I do own *a* version of it physically. What can you do?

That's really unnecessary, though. Who didn't like RE Remake?

I had something else written, but I thought of something. They only ever remade RE1 right? They never remade 2 or 3 I thought. That's why they are doing this with the 2002 remake, because it's just an HD port. They'd have to make a new game for RE2 and RE3. This is just in between stuff till they get out the new RE game. It's not about how popular the game was, this is just gonna be something easy for them to port over on the cheap and bring back an old release into the modern day.

I think the closest we've seen for a remake of Resident Evil 2 was the port for N64. But that was more like a rebuild/port I think?

This isn't even the first time they've ported the remake of the first game. It was also released back in 2009 on the Wii as Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil.

I normally don't do digital only releases, but considering that Capcom is likely doing this to test the waters with how people today would respond to the old style of RE games, I'll likely buy it to support Capcom hopefully returning the series to its roots. Besides, REmake is one of my all time favorite games and I'd love to play it in full HD.

Still kinda lame that it's getting a full on retail release in JP markets. But over here it's delegated to a digital only title.

First thought: YAY I CAN SELL MY GAMECUBE COPY.
Second thought: Wow, those backgrounds look kind of... dark and poorly upscaled. Wait, it's Capcom, of course they do.
Third thought: Maybe now we can get Resident Evil 0 in another damn platform.
Fourth thought: Oh wait, I hated REMake. BOOOOOOOOOOO GIMME MY PS1 VERSION

What was wrong with the remake? I never played it.

They say you'll be able to switch control schemes from the "tank" controls to standard. I can't remember, was that an option in the GC version?

Played it for fifteen minutes and got sick of it. I think it was the gamepad, I didn't like the Gamecube controller much.

I agree with Burningdoom. I bought my Game Cube back in the day specifically for this and Resident Evil Zero. At the time Capcom claimed every title in the series was getting the RE 1 Remake treatment, exclusively on Game Cube.
When the Game Cube failed to attract a big enough market Capcom back peddled and did the minimum amount of work necessary to bring the other titles to the console and meet the letter of the contract they'd signed with Nintendo.

I only played the original on ps1 ,so I would love to play this HD remake but oh yea , digital only. Just like my motto at the bottom on my sig. I don't do digital games. Sorry Capcom.
-
I'm sticking with getting the game for either ps1 or more likely, the gamecube remake, since I don't have/ play on the platforms that they're releasing the hd remake on.

You could always get the Wii version. It's just the GameCube version with a few control schemes. You can even use a GameCube controller with the Wii version. Plus, it's not too expensive and it's easy to get.

Oh man, I totally forgot about that! Thank you! Now I'll have to go out and get the game soon.

I still think it's a waste of time and resources, when we already have the GameCube remake which even got re-released on the Wii and still holds up very good today. And considering that it was a remake of Resident Evil 2 we wanted all along, not RE1 with a new coat of paint again.

It's just an inbetween release. It takes minimal resources to bring over something that's a generation old and just give it some control tweaks and HD textures. They needed a showing on the new systems pretty much and until they release Resident Evil 7 or whatever the new game becomes in the next year or so, we'll probably see another one of this next year if they don't release the new game.
