Title: Anyone collect sealed video games only?
Post by: dreama1 on August 28, 2014, 02:56:15 pm
What's the general opinion on people who collect sealed copies? Are they out there? What do you lot think about it?

I think it really depends on the game. Im sure half the people who gets sealed games tend to resell it later or for trade. I have a couple games I wished i kept sealed but whats is done is done. I think sealed game are more appropriate if you get different editions of the game. Open the common one and keep the more expensive one sealed, but you know this is all opinion based so take it with a grain of salt.

Eh... Depends on your income. Hell, if I had gobs of money laying around I'd probably go for a sealed collection.

I dont know about that. I would feel bad because some else could have a better use for it then letting it collect dust, esp games with limited print.

Sharing is caring

Depends on the outlook of it. Some people might believe they are preserving it for the greater good. Some might be selfish.

Sealed collectors are a whole other type of crazy imo. I really never understood buying a video game, a form of interactive media, and leaving it sealed. To me it is on par with buying a car and never, or rarely driving it. I've personally met one of these people and they were among they most unpleasant collectors I've ever meant. Who knows though, he is just one person.

I think I have 4 or 5 seal games. I'll leave them seal. It's kind of cool that it survived 25 or so years without being opened. Why would I change that now?  Besides, how bad do I need to play F-Zero and Battle Clash?

How I feel about people who collect only sealed games? They're a-holes that care less about enjoying games as entertainment as well as a art form and instead care more about their collectability and supposed rarity. I love it that so many people just reseal games and rip those douche bags off.  :D

I've only got 1 sealed game and that's Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. the only reason it's sealed is because I already had just a cart for it and wanted a complete copy. the new copy was basically the same price as a complete used one. so the only reason it's still sealed is that I haven't had a reason to open it.

Of course I would like to have a sealed duplicate of my entire collection, but even some unsealed complete gameboy stuff is way out of my budget.  I wouldn't have 450+ gameboy games if I were only a sealed collector, I would probably have 20 or so.  I think I have 3 sealed games, Dragon Quest IV for DS I picked up at TRU for $10, Qix for gameboy and Alice in Wonderland for GBC.  Also I have a sealed Dragon's Lair for GBC that has a little slit on the side from someone cutting open the case carelessly.  For me it's just a nice little bonus to have some sealed games.  I also never opened my Majora's Mask soundtrack from Club Nintendo because I don't really want to listen to it.

Some people just get really good jobs and can afford to buy 2 of every game, or are single & childless, or some combination thereof.  I suppose I'll admit that I'm a little jealous of those people sometimes, but at the same possessions like that can be a burden, and the more value involved the bigger the burden.  The collection grows and grows, you can't sell it, you can't play the games, and you have to keep them protected for years and years.  My gameboy collection (sans boxes) fits in 7 shoe boxes & I don't have to worry about anything except losing one.

People might say they are doing it for the love of gaming or posterity, but deep down you know it's because sealed copies tend to appreciate in value more.  Also, I've read that you can buy those machines to seal games in Thailand  ;).

Another good question would be:  How many sealed collectors or collectors for that matter have a lot of credit card debt?

I also met that kind of collector, and he was also the like to collect all old systems just because it looks cool. I don't even know the guy, he just forced me to listen to him for 5 minutes in a retro games store  :o I was minding my own business and the guy started telling me how he was going to buy the turbo graphx in that shop because he's "a real collector so [he] really likes old stuff that's pricey and hard to find", how many games he had and how much it was all worth, everything. I kinda just left the store because he was too annoying  ::)

I personally don't hunt down sealed games, i want to play them at some point.
But when i do buy a new game I have a rule it stays sealed til I'm ready to play it.
But some of my older games I never got around to playing and now I feel guilty opening it and end up hunting another loose copy. lol

I had some sealed jaguar games once but I wanted to try them and opened them, when I told a fellow collector he yelled at me like I committed a crime or something. lol

LOL. I agree with you on keeping it sealed 'til you're ready to play it. I stopped shopping at Gamestop, because I want to be the one opening my games. If I don't get around to playing it, I have a sealed copy for the collection.

I probably would of freaked a bit if they were my classic sealed games being open. My nephew knows the rules in my game room when he comes over. "If it's sealed...ask me first about playing it."

The collectors editions are usually the only ones I keep sealed. If a game gets past ~10 years or so and I still haven't opened it, I'll just get a used copy or a download version if I ever feel the urge to play it.

I believe collectors want the most pristine items in their collection no matter what it is. Games don't get any better than sealed, unless you're into grading them.

Whether it's stamps, currency, comics, albums, sports cards, video games, cars, the collections in the newest condition are always gonna be valued higher.

Pretty much the same.

Sometimes I get extra sealed RPG LE's but, I usually end up selling them to a friend that missed out on it (for about what I paid for it); hell - I've even been known to give them away when I know a friend really wants to play something & I have an extra one.

So, since I buy games faster than I play them -and- since I'll almost always keep it sealed until I'm ready to play it (unless it has an OST that I really want to listen to, or something), I have accumulated a good # of sealed games.

As for collecting *ONLY* sealed games; = fucking madness  :P

If the game has a cult following, or got high praise, but had limited copies (announced) or an announcement of sales floppage, THAT s when you by multiple sealed copies for the game. Especially when it slightly goes down in price temporarily before the spike.

When and end of a game or console cycle starts to come in, like the 360 and PS3 now, although some prices are already rising, THIS is the ONLY time where you can get games which will be worth 10's of 100's for like less than $20. Sealed and used, whether in store or online.

I can understand collecting sealed games, especially if multiple copies are your cup of tea.  The ones that collect only sealed games I consider bandwagon bastards.  I count these as the type that has to follow every trend and have the money to throw around.  The reason they collect is simply bragging rights.  I have dealt with two of these guys and they both pretty much view it from the same perspective.  The only thing I heard about from either one was, how many, how much spent, and why we will never be considered "collectors"because we open the games up.  I don't like dealing with these people.

I can clarify if need be.  I tend to ramble at times.  My brain tends to throw things out faster than I can type.  So I can sometimes be disjointed and fairly broken in my posts.  Prime example above I guess.

I don't think it should be about how much you spend that makes a collection great, but I do think that the collection should be worth displaying. Imagine if Jay Leno had a garage full of beat up cars or Kevin Smith didn't bag up his comics (ex. missing instructions manuals, no box, scratched discs etc.). I wouldn't say you weren't a collector, but what kind of collection are you shooting for? Sheer volume to me isn't that impressive.

Every hobby is going to cost money. There's no way around it. I personally only know two other people that collect games. They both go for complete copies in good condition. Unfortunately, bragging rights comes with the territory. EVERY collection website I've seen has a form of a way to display your collection along with that "magic number" that shows how many games you have. Don't forget to post your pics of your game room for the world to see either.

I use to collect comics for the cover artwork when I was in elementary school. The inside pages never looked as good, so I lost interest in actually reading them. There may be collectors out there, simply interested in the box art work. "Bandwagon bastards"? Maybe they are, but everybody has a different view on what a collection should consist of. If you're buying games to try to turn a profit or gouge people around the holidays when the latest system comes out, that's pretty sad.

I can understand where you're coming from to an extent.  If collecting complete copies was within my budget I would be doing so.  There is however a stark contrast those that want a collection that is complete and those that want it sealed.  Now I will admit it was foolish of me to judge a group of collectors by my run in with just a couple.  For that I admit I was wrong and I do apologize.  As for the two charming individuals I had the pleasure of dealing with in my original post.  I can only hope that one day they come to realize the true value of the blood, sweat, and tears that is just rotting away in the shrink wrap.

On a personal note.  I was an amateur illustrator at one time until the years of doing my 9 to 5er caused a severe case of osteoarthritis in my right wrist.  It's hard to illustrate anything when you can't hold a pencil or nib holder properly.  The point I'm trying to make here is that these developers wanted their games in the peoples hands and being played, not wasting away on a shelf in shrink wrap.

I do realize there are individuals that collect one to play and one to shelve.  I'm not referring to them.
And that last statement you made there I agree with wholeheartedly.

I will only keep games sealed if I already have another copy of the game that I can pop in my system at anytime. Otherwise, I just open it up because I rather have fun just playing the game than worrying about its sealed condition and that one of my cats pops it open and ruins it. But to each their own, I guess.
