Title: Custom Dust Covers For Retro Games
Post by: critter7405 on October 26, 2014, 11:46:21 pm
I thought about getting into making custom dust sleeves for retro consoles. I was wondering what everyone thinks of the custom sleeve area and if anyone would actually buy them if they were cheap enough and actually look good. Don't know a price as I just thought of this right this second. I would actually have to do a couple to see if I am actually good at making them.. Also thought of expanding it into sega carts, if I can make a template for it.
Any feedback including information would be greatly appreciated.
Let me know what you guys/gals think
Thanks  ;)

The struggle when Game>Dust Covers.
If I had a 3D Printer life would be so much easier and I would print out covers for everything.

I try to keep dust covers on all the games I can, for the right price I can see ones with designs being a fairly good idea. I've seen some and the idea float around, couple with just boxart on the sleeve or original artwork. Seems like a good idea to me.

My dad's an upholsterer, and I've thought about asking him to make me some vinyl covers for my systems. I'll have to talk to him next time I see him & see how big of a pain he thinks it would be.

We can always use universal cases If we can't find dust covers. They look nicer but takes up more space.

Any extra console will probably go in a tubberware.

I was thinking for shelf space custom dust covers so you can stand the game up tall and see what it is on the spine... Cause we all know that carts don't have the name of the game on the spine.. With the custom art on the dust cover and the spine having the name of the game on it... Would create space for more games and it would be nice to look at..

I will try and get one done over the next couple of weeks and I will post it and if it looks worthwhile I will continue to do it ... If I don't get a good reaction ...on to the next idea. ???

If they come out as good as I think they can maybe some of you great collectors will buy them off of me if the price is right.. :D

I'd start with Super Mario Bros., but that's just me.

Just finished my first dust sleeve for some reason I decided to do a n64 sleeve I think it came out really good.. I have yet to take a pic of it but when I do I will post it.. So n64 doesn't have title labels on sides but with the dust sleeve ..you can now see what your game is while on a shelf... :o

These dust sleeves seem pretty neat-o! I have heard many great things about these. But are they really worth trying to fill a whole collection with them? Here's a video about them. I watch this guys videos all the time and this recent upload seemed to be a coincidence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAuU8swN-j8

I remember seeing that one an I have made some of those for my Castlevania games but lost them in a move. They do look neat on the shelf, it just seemed a waste of ink and money to do it for a whole collection.

That looks really good.  Is it cardstock type material?  How much do you think you would sell them for?

That is a thicker photo paper and I can also print in card stock .. I can do nes,SNES,n64,genesis,master system, game boy ... Haven't thought of a price yet.. But they aren't going to be expensive ... If your interested let me know what your looking for and I can give you a price ... Anywhere from .50 cents to 1 dollar most likely though

I will continue to post images of ones that I get done on here after I print  ;D
Again I am open to anyone's opinion
Thanks again

Printed a few more but I printed them on the wrong side of the paper ..lol... The ink ran and smeared because I forgot to flip the paper and so when the printer took it in it printed on the wrong side  :'(... But other than that mistake they do look really good...
Hope to print again and not mess up this time :D

Those are looking pretty great actually! I'd like to see what they look like on your shelf. That might help get an idea of how useful they are.

Thanks for the feedback I will post a pic of them on my self two different ways.

One with spine out which will conserve space and make it very easy to find a game since the label is on the side of the sleeve .

One with the complete front visible

Again I appericate your response since no one seemed to say anything.  ;)

Here they are with the spine out the photo isn't great resolution sucks ...http://i.imgur.com/oa9XDhT.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/oa9XDhT.jpg)

Here they are on a custom shelf I built with the sleeve facing outward not the best use of space this way but still nice to look at....http://i.imgur.com/vI9Cmuy.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/vI9Cmuy.jpg)

Sorry for the photo quality I know it doesn't do it justice for what it really looks like best I can post right now

I am back at it ... Trying to finish custom making my very small collection of n64 loose cart sleeves... Down to about 2 or 3 more that need to be printed ... I think they look great and it's a cheap alternative to buying cases..  :P

Hello all,
I know it's been a really long time since I have been posting anything I have been around just haven't really had the time to post much on here. I know this topic is really old but I have some news for the sleeves I have been making. I got in contact with a retro business owner who decided to give the sleeves a chance in his shop. Hopefully they do well and everything goes to as planned. But here is the link to his Facebook page and the picture he took of the ones he currently has on his shelf. Again if there is anyone on here interested in custom sleeves I can do others just give me a PM and I'll see what I can do. He lists them for $5 but I will sell them cheaper to VGC collectors.
