Title: Got a PS1. What now?
Post by: badATchaos on November 08, 2014, 11:09:06 pm
Hate to start a new tread for this but I didn't really see a good place to spit a comment out.
I recently got my first PlayStation (for free) a few weeks ago. It came with an original non-analog-stick controller. I'll grab a newer one eventually.
Any how... what are some fun, cheap games I should pick up for it?

Sorry cheap shot. I just didn't really care for 8. I have it. Never played any further than the first village and the caves.

I just listed most of the stuff you can probably find for under $10, that were the best. Final Fantasy 8 would be in honorable mention, just because I don't feel that the game is as strong as the two powerhouses of FF7 and FF9.

I personally think RPG-wise the snes beats the ps1, however man there are so many damn games for the ps1 Crash is my favorite recently played through all of them and they still hold up really well, Spyro is great too.

Oh I think its a good game. It's just not as great as FF7 or FF9 when you put the parts of the games together. I still really like the OST as well. For your sake, i shall add it.

Yeah, indeed! One of my goals is to find physical copies of the original Final Fantasy soundtracks because of how great most of the music is. So far, all I have is Final Fantasy V and I'm still mad I passed up on the Final Fantasy VI soundtrack when I had the chance to purchase it for cheap. I've also seen FF1-2, FF3,FF4, FF7, and FF9 soundtracks at a store near my house but I keep forgetting to get money to purchase those as well.

Other than RPGs, most of the games on PS1 are cheap. And even some of those can be cheap. There are a few exceptions, of course. But for the most part, you'll find it to be a very affordable system to collect for. And if basic graphics don't bother you much, there's actually a lot of innovative gameplay to be found in this era.

My recommendations for cheap, good PS1 games:

Action/Adventure:
-Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
-Fighting Force
-Medievil
-Mega Man X 4-6
-Metal Slug X
-Resident Evil 1-3
-Spider-Man 1 & 2
-Tenchu: Stealth Assassins

Light-Gun Shooters:
-Area 51
-Time Crisis

Platformers:
-Crash Bandicoot 1-3
-Gex
-Rayman
-Spyro the Dragon 1-3

RPGs:
-Brave Fencer Musashi
-King's Field 1 & 2
-Legend of Legaia
-Xenogears

Shoot-Em Ups:
-Apocalypse
-Darius Gaiden
-Raiden Project
-Strikers 1945
-Thunder Force V

Other:
-Jet Moto series (jet-ski racing)
-Road Rash 3-D (mixture of motorcycle-racing and combat)
-Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1-4 (skateboarding)
-Twisted Metal 1-4 (vehicular-combat)
-Vigilante 8 & V8: 2nd Offense (vehicular-combat)
-WWF Smackdown 1 & 2 (wrestling)

Can I get an "Amen"?

I haven't been through all of the posts but, if Castlevania: SotN, Alundra, and Klonoa aren't listed...they should be  ;D

There's a lot of great PS1 games but - unfortunately, now's not the best time (unless you get lucky) for finding a lot of them on the cheap  :-\

I'm not sure about Xenogears being "cheap," but it's definitely a must-have!  That and games like Star Ocean and Chrono Cross.
Title: Re: Got a PS1. What now?

Chrono Cross is pretty cheap now, and the Star Ocean the Second Story isn't too bad in price either, along with Parasite Eve. Legend of Dragoon and Final Fantasy Origins/Chronicles are pretty cheap. However, most of the other good rpgs in the PS1 library are rising in price over $30, so luck in finding some decent deals with those. ( besides the other rpgs I mentioned in my earlier post).

Thanks for the titles. The prices are getting crazy so I figure I'd ask, because there's no way I'm gonna build a collection on 20 dollars a game at this point.

Check out the Marketplace on here.  Someone had a bunch of PS1 games for sale at a pretty reasonable price.  I know I saw some Final Fantasy titles on there.

Survival Horrors?  Any of the Resident Evils, Dino Crisis...

JRPGS?  Anything with Atlus on it.  Though if you're looking for good rpgs that aren't the typical square fluff you're probably going to be spending a pretty penny (over thirty dollars).

Spyro was pretty great, btw!

Most of the Atlus rpgs are hitting above $50-60+ for the most part, especially the Persona games. I would only reccomend getting those if you have the money to spare, otherwise I'd reccomend going for the cheap jrpgs instead.

Nothing touches the PS2 when it comes to JRPGs, but the PS1 is a strong second place. And all three games you named are amazing - SotN is in my top-3 all time, and Klonoa is just an amazing game. Both of those are a little pricey these days, but fortunately there are tons of ways to play SotN and Klonoa got a really good Wii port that I highly recommend (just for the love of all that is holy, go into the options and switch the vocals back to the "gibberish talk" they were originally).

I haven't seen anyone mention these gems:
Ape Escape
Wipeout 1 & 2
Crash Team Racing (still one of the all-time best kart racers)

Survival Horrors?  Any of the Resident Evils, Dino Crisis...

JRPGS?  Anything with Atlus on it.  Though if you're looking for good rpgs that aren't the typical square fluff you're probably going to be spending a pretty penny (over thirty dollars).

Square was in their prime during the PS1 & most of the PS2 days. It's an injustice to dismiss their PS1 output as "fluff" IMO - even beyond the main FF7-9 games you had games such as Xenogears, FF Tactics, Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer Musashi, Vagrant Story, Front Mission 3, Threads of Fate and Chrono Cross. Probably more I'm leaving out. Sure, if you ONLY played Square RPGs from that system you're leaving out a ton of amazing games, but ignoring them is just as much of a crime.

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure - Sort of a "beginners" RPG but charming as all get-out.
Alundra - An amazing game in the style of 2D overhead Zelda.
Breath of Fire III/IV - Both of these games are great - IV did the "swap a non-active party member into battle mid-battle" thing before FFX did it.
Legend of Legaia - A very cool combat system that incorporates fighting game-style combos into a turn based RPG. Also has a really memorable soundtrack.

I definitely 2nd this choice. I love this game. The combat system is really cool to play with, well unless you cheat and get all the moves in the strategy guide. I liked the story, too. A must-have in any RPG fan's PS1 library, IMO.

I also want to point out King's Field 1 & 2. They're action-RPGs played from a first-person view. These were early From Software games, who makes the Demon's/Dark Souls games and Armored Core games, and very early PS1 games. As such, they are a little rough in the graphics department. People seem to love them or hate them, though. As it does have slower-paced gameplay and can be challenging. It's also very exploration-driven. So I'd say give them a try first, if you can. I adore them, though.

It's been a long time since I've checked prices for PS1 games, but here's a couple of titles that should not be expensive and that I've played to death: Project Overkill (Konami). The controls are wierd, but once you get used to it, can be an enjoyable 2D isometric gore fest. Same thing for Loaded. The first Driver was awesome if you like doing burnouts in 70's V8 cars. Twisted Metal 2. Demolition Derby Raw. Tekken 2 and 3 are some of the best Fighting games ever. Metal Gear Solid, Final Doom, Die Hard Trilogy, GTA 2, Blood Omen: Legacy Of Kain, Tenchu Stealth Assassins, Bushido Blade, Mobile Light Force, Sol Divide... Maybe a bit more pricy now: Casltevania SOTN and Chronicles, Metal Slug X, The Raiden Project

Definitely agree with you, tafk.  Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite strategy RPG!  If you want a more fleshed-out translation and cutscenes with voiceovers, Final Fantasy Tactics: War Of The Lions on the PSP or digitally for the Vita.

As far as lesser-known RPGs, not sure if I'm right about these but here goes...

Strategy RPGs:
Front Mission 3:  Not a big fan of the main protagonist but really enjoyable gameplay.  Definitely loved Front Mission 4 on the PlayStation 2.
Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth:  Rewards you with possibly better item drops when you chain a combo.
Kartia:  Still takes time for me to learn how to do the crafting system but still a decent game.  May need to warn you, I have a bit of an Atlus/Sega/Sony addiction.

Action RPGs:
Darkstone:  Diablo-esque gameplay with randomized dungeons.  Need to replay this game when I'm able to find one.  Also available on PC.
Threads Of Fate:  Only played Rue's path but I enjoyed the adventuring and gameplay.
Vagrant Story:  Did not get very far but disabling limbs, with a targeting dome similar to Parasite Eve, along with the weapon-crafting and maintenance...  Awesome!

Turn-based RPGs:
Beyond The Beyond, Legend Of Dragoon:  From my days of a mild Atlus-, Sega-, Square-Enix-, and Sony-published game addictions.
Grandia & Lunar series:  Some re-edited content from the Sega Saturn version.  Awesome games, though.
Thousand Arms:  Some dating-sim elements incorporated into weapon upgrading.  Battle system is one character fighting, while party members support/buff/debuff.

Possibly not worth playing now but the original Gran Turismo isn't a bad one to collect, it's certainly a classic though I have no idea on cost. Tenchu is one of my PlayStation favorites and even though I don't love fighting games, I've had a lot of fun with Tekken 3. If you like space combat sims Colony Wars is good, if a bit short.

I guess your definition and my definition of cheap is a bit different.  Castlevania Symphony of the Night is expensive as hell.  MediEvil 1 & 2 are $20 and up each, and the price of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro PS1 games have gone through the roof as well.  And trying to find a cheap copy of Xenogears is harder than finding a Unicorn.   :-[

I bought Castlevania SOTN from Play-N-Trade for $25. Got Xenogears from eBay for about the same price. And I see Crash and Spyro games at places like thrift shops and Goodwill all the time, looks like they trend about $10-$20 on eBay.

Damn...I wish I had thrift shops like that around me.  There are a few, I guess I'll have to go check them out.

I guess because of what I am looking for specifically in a game like Xenogears or Castlevania SotN, they are much higher.  These games are "cream of the crop" titles.  So if I buy them, they have to be near-flawless, original black label versions.  Those are pretty expensive.

On a side note, my package with seven black label original PlayStation Final Fantasy games arrived yesterday.  Oh man...the ONLY thing wrong with the entire set is the bottom right corner of the FFVII booklet is slightly bent.  Not dog-eared, just bent downward.  It's a beautiful set that any discerning gamer would be proud to own.   8)
