Ever played a game that was so hard, and no matter how many times you tried you couldn't beat the game, or maybe even a certain mission/level?
The only one I could think off the top of my head was Red Dead Revolver. (Granted this was when I was a kid)... .I was playing the last mission and for the life of me, I could never beat it. No matter how many times, different tactics I used, I would always die.... And I would get so close, and bam, I die.
Maybe ill rebuy it and try again.
Now if we are talking about games you never beat cause it sucked or I hated it... that list is much longer.

Castlevania (original - NES)
Ninja Gaiden (original - NES)
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (DS)
Those three stand out in my mind as games I've gotten to the final boss (or in the case of NG, at least to the final level - can't remember) but just couldn't finish them off.

E.T

Ninja Gaiden :o
-
Ghost 'N Goblins (NES) then I saw my entire childhood frustration played out on Youtube with an entire completion in 22min :-\
-
Battletoads - I've never gotten past the turbo tunnel after trying 200+ times since I was 5.
Bart's Nightmare - I think the furthest I've gotten in the game was a B-. I can never beat the hell level and the Bartzilla levels.

Battletoads in Ragnarok's World

Ghost 'N Goblins (NES)
Screw this game. Not many games have toppled me but this is the one that stands out in my mind.

Here we go. I'm pretty good at most NES games, but there are a few that are fun games yet I suck at them. Some are hard just for the sake of being hard. I'm looking at you Battletoads. >:(
Ghost 'n Goblins
Battletoads
Blaster Master
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
Double Dragon III

Recently, Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2 for Xbox and Xbox 360. Damn bosses!!!
-
Crazy Taxi. Getting the achievements for that is a pain! Also any Edmund McMillen game.

I beat some of those difficult NES games back in the day, simply because I had nothing but time available (Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Turtles, Ghost n' Goblins etc). I think more than anything was the lack of saving progress that made those games difficult.
One game that comes to mind is Ninety-Nine Nights II on the 360. I cannot beat that game on the hardest setting with the last remaining character to get the final achievements.

Ghouls n Ghosts for me

Ghosts 'N Goblins- Could not finish the 2nd loop of the game.
Ninja Gaiden II and III- I finished the first game, but I can't get past the last stage of these two games
Super E.D.F- Screw that last stage. I could beat the game by using the homing for most stages, and photon for the last stage. Trying to beat the final bosses w/o photon or atomic is impossible since bullets come very fast by the second phase of the FB, and your hitbox is too big. Photon/atomic cancels those bullets, and its just impossible otherwise.

Any Contra, Life Force, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde... I might as well say most NES games I've actually given a serious go at. I have beat very few of them. When I think of games that are too hard, it's pretty much always NES.
-
Ninja Gaiden. Gave up on the second level.
There was also a Yugioh game for the PS1 that was batshit.

Not many games fall into this category for me. I've bested toughies like Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2, Blaster Master, and Mega Man. But there are that nagging few that I enjoy playing but end up rage quitting every time I play:
Battletoads (nes)
Jouney to Silius (nes)
TMNT 1 (nes)
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (nes)
I did eventually beat the last two using a game genie but that doesn't count.
Battletoads I couldn't even beat with a game Genie AND an Game Action Replay.
Not ashamed.

The Adventures of Batman & Robin (Gen) is a great game but damn it is hard. As a kid, me and my brother couldn't even beat the first level boss... And now we barely make it to level 5.. Gaiares(Gen) also comes to mind as being hard as nails, even if it's a great shooter.
