Hey guys, not long ago. I was a newbie!
That said we've recently had a LOT of new folks participating in the forums.
First, welcome! Glad to have ya!
Second, I thought it would be cool to have a thread where we could talk about how we found vgcollect!
To kick us off. I was looking for an iPhone app to catalog my meager (at the time) collection of primarily NES and Genesis games. I went through a lot of apps. They were all way overpriced and required full manual entry. After some googling I found this site.
I didn't realize until a month or so later there was actually a forum. I found out pretty quickly after that that the people in it are awesome!
What's your story? How'd you find out about VGCollect? Are you here to catalog your collection, hang out in the forums or both?
-
I discovered this place back in 2011 from Reddit (back when I still used Reddit) on the game collecting subreddit. I thought it was nifty so I tried it out. I also tried out some other collecting sites at the time, like Darkadia, but I stuck with VGCollect because I liked it the best.
I didn't really start posting here regularly until some time last summer, so I wasn't initially here for the forums, but I do like them now. :)
-
I was checking out the cover project decided to look at the forums and saw in some of the people there had the VGcollect sig banner in some of the signatures checked out this site and signed up in under a minute... it helped I was in need of a site like this.
-
Back in 2011 one of the admins here (maybe tpugmire?) had mentioned the site on the AtariAge forums which is how I found the site. Loved the site and started posting in the forums. This is the first, and only forum that I have ever been active on. Back when I started we did not have those fancy "quote" buttons; we had to type @username when replying to people on the forums!
-
A friend told me about it. He is on here
-
I was doing some searches for video game collection databases and came across this site. This was the first one I found that let users have multiple variations of cover art, package design etc.
Good to hear all the stories in the forums about this common interest (obsession!!!!!).
-
I started looking for a new place to call home back in late 2010, 2011... Rfgeneration.com crashed, and I lost weeks worth of collection work... that's when I found VGcollect, and I never looked back.

I was a long time Gamespot community member and after that site restructured and abandoned their collection feature (which wasn't that great btw) and their Legacy gaming forum, I was without an online gaming community for a while until I stumbled upon VGcollect while trying to find a place to catalog my collection. Definitely love this site way more than GS, that's for sure :)
-
A mix of bikingjahuty and betelgeuse's story... I loved the IGN listing they had before the redesign so I searched on Google for "video game lists" and found this awesome site.
-
I found it while googling for video game collecting websites :)
-
I believe Kitsune Sniper/foxhack posted a link to here in a DP topic.
Like, I made the account back when the site first went public and then didn't really post anything until recently.
-
I think at the time I was looking for a game collecting app and found VGC on it. Seeing that I had to use the website to add stuff, that's how I began my time here.
-
Heard about it on YouTube. Was watching Metal Jesus and he did a video about great ways to keep up with your collection. One of the sites he talked about was VGCollect. I had been looking for a fun and easy way to keep up with my collection for some time. Up until I joined the site, I had my collection simply listed on a Word Document on my Windows Phone.
So far I really like using the site. Love being able to see a breakdown of my collection, make a wish list and I like that most of the games have extra information and pictures. Also, I like that it has a forum. Everyone here has been really cool since I joined and its nice to chat with fellow collectors. It kind of makes collecting feel like a group activity.
Oh and it also makes it easy to show my collection to others. When I am out gaming hunting, I often run into other collectors or people who are just interested in what I have. Its cool to access the site on my phone and show off what I got. I do wish VGCollect had an app for Windows Phones ... but I guess accessing it on my browser isn't so bad.

A friend of mine who uses this site recommended it to me.

A friend on mine who uses this site daily (Abe) recommended it :)

Same here. ;D

My buddy disgaeniac told me about it. While he's known as disgaeniac here, I know him as darkrpger on GameFAQs.com. We go way back, and one day he informed me of all this site had to offer. Eventually I popped in to check it out and...the rest is history! I've met some lovely people on here. What I like most about this website (besides cataloguing) is that everyone here is so respectful unlike 99% of the other internet forums.
-
The Metal Jesus of course!
-
In the very beginning, back when the site was still in beta, Matt made a post on DigitalPress. I decided to check it out and I was hooked. Not long after, he made me the first staff member.
-
I found it while I was looking for some info about a game.
-
I found it once I installed the app on my phone. I was trying to remember what games I had and sometimes I forget what I have and don't have. so thats why I got the app and then discovered there is a forum years later...And I only post every now and then.

... I think matt or scott made the first post about it at DP. I don't recall doing anything to promote the site other than my signature.

I was searching the web looking for more people to worship all that is the SOERA. I noticed a lot of names here who were not on my follower list and decided this was the place to take over the world. Domination is imminent!
-
I can not remember the exact place i found VGCollect, but i was searching the web for large video game collections and came across a thread that had a few pics of and made mentions to TheFlea's large collection and this site, so i joined up.

we're not worthy.

i had started listing my games in excel and then a guy i went to school with posted his games on facebook with a like to a site. i went to check it out and it only had modern games.
i didnt think to look online before.
then i googled video game database. loved this one the second i saw it.
-
I was performing a google search for game collection websites. Somehow after sifting through Google results I found one hit for this site. Immediately I knew this was the ultimate collecting site and have never looked for another.
-
I was using excel for making my game lists, and I didn't think it was working too well. So, after some google searching, and multiple failed attempts to sign up here, I finally broke through and made my collecting database home here.

That may have been me. I seem to recall posting a link when someone asked about different ways to catalog collections.

I we're all glad ya did! :)

I was also recruited from reddit's /r/gamecollecting long ago. I remember when I had to add about every game in my collection to the database (especially my Japanese imports). This place has grown so much and gotten so much better, and the community is the only one I've ever left for an extended period and missed so much I returned (although I can't be as active as I once was).
VGCollect (and especially these forums) is a pretty special place!
-
I used to catalog my games over at a site called RF Generation. When I first came here, it was out of desperation to get away from that place because the site was constantly sluggish and being hacked to the point that it was going offline regularly (who hacks a VG cataloging site?). So I Googled an alternative, signed up, and even alluded to this in my introduction post here, to which I recall nobody had any idea what website I was talking about. For the record, it was RF Generation.
Wasn't sure I'd go through with re-cataloging everything, but eventually did anyway and here we are now.
-
That's actually a pretty funny story.
I was in this dirty bar in OKC. Up walked a gentleman and introduced himself as soera. I offered to buy me a drink. Being the cheap bastard that I am, of course I let him. He was nice and said all the right things, but I'm not that kind of fella. I started feeling a little tipsy. I'm not really sure where things went after that. :-\
Well next thing I know, I'm waking up in a hotel bathtub filled with ice and a login to VGCollect.com
In reality, I was looking for an app for my old android phone. I downloaded it and put it to use for a little while. Then, I needed more and hopped into the mix here.
-
The Metal Jesus of course!
"Hi guys, I'm The Metal Jesus and I'm back again."
Love that he starts off nearly every video with the same line ;D
-
I've known ko1ru for a few years now, and she sent me a ping to check it out, thinking it'd be a good replacement for another site we both used to be on. Made some cool friends here, and it remains the only gaming site I post on.

Same here. Aside from NES Hunter the VGCollect app was the only (and best) collection app that supports multiple systems.

I started to feel the need a few years back to have a list of my backlog and such. I had heard about backloggery and signed up, but the site was so backwards ("why are all these people manually typing in the titles of their games?! The site could just have an item record and people check that item off to indicate whatever they want to indicate" I said to myself) that I backed out very quickly and headed off to Google.
Googling something like "video game collection" or something like that got me to this site, and I loved how clean and simple it was. Also, the forum folks were super nice and open to thoughts on the site as it was still growing.
Here we are, almost 4 years later (!!!), and I'm still loving the site.

Really enjoying everyones stories.
I'd also like to thank Turf for involuntarily donating me his kidneys and the Soera for the rock bottom prices he charged me for installation!
-
It was nothing. 8)

Dialysis isn't so bad. You're welcome.

If you say so, I honestly don't remember. Might have been your sig, which is why you're sticking out in my mind for this.
-
I do not recall how I ended up here.
-
I searched all over the place for collecting website/app to help me while out know what I have so I could purchase and make sure I didn't dupe it... Glad I found it everyone in the forums is great and I love being a part of it. :P
-
Hi everyone!
I found it from being a member of SNESHUB ( http://playingwithsuperpower.com/ ), a small community dedicated to the glorification of the Super Nintendo and other games & consoles of times past.
Our administrator had a link to this place and once I saw how easy and user-friendly it was, I decided to stay and get my collection cataloged.
-
Was looking for a place to catalog my collection with a Google search. I had seen the site name pop up on some random N4G discussion but forgot about it. I pulled this site up while feverish and delirious during Christmas from my well-timed flu. Gotta love when they come on the holidays!
In between playing short sessions of Dragon Age Inquisition, I started cataloging.
-
Was searching for some Macromedia animations for some NES covers cause I want to use them in another forum after a couple of links and images found this site and as soon as I saw the collection option and how it workd decided to create my account and stay here 8)

I've seen people in other forums with their signatures containing this site's tag and often I clicked on them to see it. Looked nice.
Before this, I have used Gamespot.com's database and it worked for me but I decided to move my efforts here and thought it sucked at first because I thought it lacked games until I figured you can add games then I became hooked.

To this day, I find Gamespot's database difficult to use. Everything takes forever to load and that's if it doesn't error out. It's astonishing to me that it's still like that after nearly 10 years.
-
I was using an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of everything. The admin on one of the now-defunct regional arcade collecting forums pointed several of us this way. That's been, what, almost four years ago? Man, time flies when you're having fun.
-
Last week. People keep mentioning it over and over and over on reddit's r/gamecollecting topic whenever people asked how they catalog their collections. I thought I'd check it out.
I normally use Collectorz.com 's external program database program, but had computer issues last year and still waiting in limbo for a friend to fix it and I figured I'd use this in the meantime, and eventually use it anyways as an easy way to show friends what I have in my collection.
