Title: Favorite 16-Bit Song?
Post by: darko on February 15, 2012, 12:21:39 pm
Mine is from Earthworm Jim. The Descent (Genesis Version):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gl5dl1kGXHU

Not really as epic as some of the RPG music out there, but I still love it!

I won't say this is my absolute favorite...but it is probably the most influential video game song, for me, ever.

I hear it start, it's one of those things: I'm immediately in my happy place. :-P

The ending credits music from A Link to the Past.  Closely followed by ending credits music from Super Mario World.  Both were composed by the same guy I believe.

My favorite song in my all time favorite game.  It gets good around 50 seconds.

One of my all time favorites!  The whole soundtrack rocks.  EDIT: My bad... I missed the 16-bit part

Favorite 16-bit music? That's way too hard for me to choose, especially looking at SNES games, a ton of them have just amazing soundtracks with great songs, I'd never be able to choose one.

What I CAN do is post the first tune that comes to my mind when I think "16-bit music":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9yI7fnlAKw

Probably not my favorite, but it's up there. My favorite would either be in an RPG, or in DKC1 or DKC2, but no matter how much I think about it, I keep thinking of other great 16-bit tunes that I just love. For example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnkZ9PjXOQQ

I'll remember the first time I heard this forever.

So yeah, I don't think I can possibly have a favorite 16-bit tune, just like I can never have a favorite game, or a favorite anything really. There's just too many great ones to choose from.

I have one of those...mine is the old style, it looks just like the top one there but it doesn't have the gold band, just the triforce. My husband got me that and the Zelda songbook for Christmas one year. The only song I can play well is Epona's song.

I've always loved the music from the classic Sonic games. I've heard some fabulous remixes of some of the themes as well.

This is hard to choose since the 16 bit era had the best soundtracks evar, so I'm going to cheat and choose one from SNES and one from Genesis:

SNES: (Since Central Highway was taken...that and this are my 1A and 1B)

Genesis: (So many to choose from just from Sonic, but this one is my all time Genesis track)

I think Im going to chime in with something I figured would have already been posted. The opening theme song for Ys Book 1&2 from Turbo Grafx CD. I loved it so much when I was younger that I actually had all the music recorded onto a cassette so I could listen to it in my car. I hadnt heard it in a while then I got VC version of the game (Btw, going to recommend the hell out of it cause its a 100% exact copy of the Turbo version for only $8) and when the intro music started playing again, my younger days all flashed back to me immediately.

We're not giving a whole lot of recognition to the genesis here other than Sonic... which is understandable, since the Genesis' sound chip was pretty much complete crap, but there's still a few good non-Sonic tunes on the system... Like this one:

Revenge of Shinobi for the Sega Genesis had my favorite soundtrack (for today).

Strider for Genesis came very close to 1st place. I remember playing that game as a kid just for the music.

Honorable mentions: Killer Instinct and Donkey Kong Country (same composer) had some amazing tracks, Earthworm Jim, Turtles In Time, Gradius. Oh god, I have to stop. There is so much great music in video games!

Best game soundtrack ever:
Gradius Rebirth - Heavy Blow
I almost cried listening to this while playing Rebirth for the first time. Konami did it again!

The Devil's Crush theme is probably my favorite 16-bit song, honestly.  It seems like there's more there than possible on the TG-16 hardware.  It's probably neck-and-neck with:

Street Fighter II - Ken's Theme

Otherwise:

F-Zero - Big Blue

Zelda Link to the Past - Great Fairy theme

Sonic Blast Man - Stage 1 (oddball pick, but I like it)

Actraiser - Fillmore
& the entire Actraiser 2 soundtrack.  It's amazing!

Harvest Moon - Fall Theme (kind of an odd choice, I know, but I've always loved this game)

Donkey Kong Country 2 - Disco Train

Super Mario RPG - Beware the Forest Mushrooms

Sonic Spinball - Lava Powerhouse (this is, like, the only thing about this game I liked)

I actually learned how to play the Harvest Moon - Winter song on the piano a few years ago. Not sure if the person that was transcribing them ever did Fall though.

When the game was still somewhat new, I had taught myself how to play the Fall theme on a recorder. I haven't touched a recorder in years, I wonder if I can still do it.

Definitely surprised nobody has mentioned Lunar. Played it for Saturn, Gameboy advance, and my favorite would be the Playstation.

Any of the 16 bit Luna songs are nice and calm melodies to fall asleep to. Feels like lullabies to me. ^.^

I do believe the youtube link is for the gameboy version.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZwUx-Wfr5k

The following links aren't 16 bit (32 bit, I think - if somebody can confirm) but it does the Lunar story justice.
My favorites would be from the Lunar Silver Star Story - Playstation edition.

Intro:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEIURTJKek0

Luna's Boat Song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ8nyFGuqBo

Athena's Song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FULmDcGqknI

These melodies are a MUST HAVE for anybody's collection.
Don't believe the person who does Luna's voice has been very active since then. Which is a shame... such a beautiful voice, very talented.

I have a playlist that I use when I'm studying that's all Orchestrated video game music. (If music has words, I can't concentrate on what I'm reading.) So I'm posting the Orchestral version that I have of this, rather than the original 16-bit version. But it's sooooo pretty.

They are really, really hard to find, but years ago a friend of mine from Japan sent me copies of the Orchestral Game Concerts. They are my go-to for good studying music.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchestral_Game_Music_Concerts

Then I've got the Video Games Live albums (2 of them). Got mine at Fry's Electronics on a vacation a couple years ago. Then this year for Christmas my mom found The Greatest Video Game Music by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. (Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/The-Greatest-Video-Game-Music/dp/B005QW1FB0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1340740490&sr=8-2&keywords=video+game+philharmonic) The Video Game Orchestra and the Black Mages are also awesome, but both of them are more rock-based so it isn't as easy to focus.
