Title: Different versions of DOS games?
Post by: klanksmash on July 29, 2015, 04:01:48 pm
Sometimes there are different releases of DOS games. For example the listing for Police Quest 3 http://vgcollect.com/item/37623 (http://vgcollect.com/item/37623) is the EGA 5.25" floppy disk version. The one I have is the VGA 3.5" floppy version. The box looks the same and it comes with the same stuff other than the disks but the UPC and item numbers are different. Should it be a different listing and if so how should I name it?

Different listing. As per the style guide (http://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,22.0.html):

Quote
Games with variants to Box Art, Cart Art or Discs: Parenthesis "( )" are used to denote variations. So if a NES game was released with both a 5 screw cart or a 3 screw cart, it would be listed something like Burgertime (3 Screw Cartridge) or Burgertime (5 Screw Cartridge), or if a game has variant cart or disc labeling, like a lot of Atari games... such as Adventure (Sears Picture Label) and Adventure (Sears Text Label). Of course Atari games can have up to 5 or so variations, which means a separate listing for each one.
  • Paperboy (Oval Seal)
  • Paperboy (Round Seal)
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 (Bros over Mario's Head)
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 (Bros on Mario's hand)
  • Ridge Racer (Not For Resale)

Other examples:

The EA Games Collection -- http://vgcollect.com/item/4438
The EA Games Collection (Small box) -- http://vgcollect.com/item/40059

So just add "(VGA 3.5" Floppy version)" to the end of the game title and note the differences in the description field.

Here's an extreme example. When I picked up a boxed Pirates! Gold, I did a bunch of research and found all the releases I could AND added them all into the database.

Foxhack, what do you say about them and style?

Channeling htimreimer? :p

It's all good, but you can update them with better scans from MobyGames (http://www.mobygames.com/game/pirates-gold/cover-art). Remember they let everyone use their stuff now.

If you take out the exclamation point the link works fine.
