Title: Metroid - no region code on cart
Post by: coraguardian on September 22, 2015, 03:15:29 pm
I bought a Metroid nes cart from a Canadian eBay seller and there's no region code in the lower right corner on the cart. Is there a way to know if it's a can or us cart? Or did I bought a cart with a fake label? Should I make a new entry in the database for it? imgur link to both side of the cart below. Thanks for your help.

http://www.ebay.nl/itm/Metroid-NTSC-NES-Nintendo-Good-Condition-/161614851497?hash=item25a0feeda9 (the one on the lower right seems more like yours, on the first picture)

Lots of different versions there, which are legit. Round/Oval seal, 3 screw/5 screw, region code/no region code

I would put it up as a 3 screw, round seal, no region code variety

According to NintendoAge (http://nintendoage.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=Element.View&egID=1483&lgID=642&sID=642) The 5 screw release didn't have the product code on the label. Three screw versions had the code added and the Nintendo seal was oval. So it's kinda weird that yours is a mishmash of the two.

I suppose anything's possible though.

Could have replaced the front sticker?

I'll have to take a look at mine when I get home. Mine sounds just like yours but mine is a 3 screw cart I'm fairly certain. If you have questions about its legitimacy, just open it up.

If you do and you cant find what a legitimate car board looks like online post a pic and we will gladly help you figure it out.

If you want to open it up to check but do not own the security bit then this will be of some help for making your own http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/18/mini-how-to-make-a-tool-to-breach-nintendos-security-screws/

I personally use the pen method but modified slightly to fit into a cartridge. Be sure to make it on something you don't mind damaging (like a Super mario/duck hunt cartridge) as you can burn/melt/not leave the melted plastic in long enough to cool and end up with black hardened plastic all inside the screw slots.

Thanks for the replies,
I opened the cart and took photos of both side of the board. I used a flat head screwdriver to open the cart as the screws are normal ones.

Looks legit, it looks just like mine at least.

It's a real board no doubt looks just like mine which I bought new. what concerns me though is that the screws were flathead? I have never seen a single cartridge that did not have Nintendo's security screws.

All of my five screw carts can be opened with a flat blade screwdriver, though they don't look "normal"
