It is optional. At first they made it sound like a requirement.

So hyped for this game... I loved the Playstation 2 games. Not a fan of the way the series went last generation... Hopefully this can redeem the series and we can see some good old classic ace combat!

That was my impression at first. Sounds like it's going to be a great game! I def want to get it. :)
Last good one was Zero (never played 6). ACAH and ACI were garbage. But they are saying its going back to strangereal world. Currently at 20% dev.

I've heard Ace Combat X is pretty good too, came out a little bit after Zero. I like ACI, have never played ACAH, but from what I understand it isn't that good.
