Title: Why aren't mobile games a part of the site?
Post by: realpoketendonl on February 20, 2016, 11:03:02 am
I mean, I do get why they aren't here in a way, since the Google Play store is overflowing with small games like it's a flash-game site, and a lot of them are free, but in my opinion they still count as a part of my collection. I only have 4 mobile games right now (Goat Evolution, Ping Pong Free, Plague inc. and Plants vs. Zombies 2), but they're still some of my games. Maybe that's just me, but in my opinion a mobile game feature would be nice.

Because those kind of "games" aren't viewed as legitimate by most people incl me, that and there are far too many crappy games to keep count of, it'd inflate the database way to much. :S

Answered your own question.
There's limitless amounts of free games that come and go so often it would be really hard to track them all even if we had a full time employee managing the database. We might as well start adding games from flash game sites.
There were a group of people on the site that didn't want to allow any downloadable stuff to begin with. A line had to be drawn somewhere. The idea being: you can't really collect mobile or even downloadable games because there was never a finite supply of them to begin with. Basically if you have the money you hit buy and download it. It's not really collecting in the traditional sense.

Yeah, I guess you guys are right. There's way too much of them, and you're right, it's not really collecting. Oh well, it's not an issue for me or anything. I mostly made an account to keep track of my merchandise and physical games and hardware anyway.

What is the current "line"? If the system has physical releases then it can have digital games listed too?

The line that bars mobile downloadable games from VGCollect. I could have phrased that better.

I honestly don't count downloaded games as part of a collection. I used to list them but felt they where not part of my collection so I removed them all. Mobile games are in this same category. If VGCollect wants to add a list, then sure why not. If they have downloaded games from consoles and PC on here then go ahead. But I know I wont be using it.  :P

Sorry for reading the comment wrong. Thanks for the clarification.

Because mobile games don't have a physical presence. There is no disc, box etc. to "collect".

P.S I personally don't think "digital downloads" should really be on this site either...

Yeah, it's a tricky thing, but some people do prefer downloadable titles. I personally don't care for digital eShop titles if I can get them physical, but some people prefer it and would like to keep track of them in their collection.  But as others have said, it's in the database in case people want to add them to their collection. Everyone else can avoid that section :)

I was kinda against it as well but unfortunately more and more games are becoming "digital only," and it'd be nice for me to have it listed in my collection somewhere. Thankfully devs/publishers seem to be realizing that there are still a lot of folks who would like a physical copy of a game.  Shovel Knight and Life is Strange, for example.  I'm still holding out for a physical version of the newer Layton / Ace Attorney games  :'(

I track digital titles because it affects my willingness to purchase physical copies.

If I couldn't see, on a whim, that I own a digital copy of DKC Tropical Freeze, I probably would've bought a physical copy by now.

Without sounding like a basic internet troll, to answer your questions those are not games at all. They are just clones of clones of clones that are distributed to make money off of people. Plants vs zombies and and other games that have real releases are fine. But crap like clash of clans, game of war, and pretty much anything from king is not a game. It is a time waster that incites people to spend money. Sorry to sound so harsh, but i really hate mobile "games" and DLC with a passion. I think they are destroying what most of us love about games....the fun.

Mobile games are interesting.

I own the first three Dragon Quest games on Android as I can't get them on any other platform in my region. I count them as real games.

However things like Angry Birds and the free titles that I've downloaded on my phone, which make up 99% of the market's content, I don't count as true games.

No offense, but this "mobile games aren't "real" (whatever a real game is) games" line of thinking seems really elitist and kinda... well, sorry, but kinda dumb to me. So if, say, Angry Birds gets ported to consoles it's a real game, but the before mentioned Dragon Quest ports on mobile aren't? Is 999 on DS a real game? How about Steins;Gate? We do have a steam category... and the amounts of games releasing on steam every single day is really, really crazy, with many of them being mobile ports btw.

Don't get me wrong, I get why there's no mobile section on this site and that's fine, it's just the mentality of some people that irks me the wrong way. Idk :x

I think it is wrong to totally discredit mobile games like they aren't "real games."  But my understanding is that there are millions of mobile games, many of them cheap cash-in's and IAP filled crap.  It would be impossible to catalog them all and even harder to differentiate between paid versions and the "freemium" versions.  You mentioned Square-Enix and DS game ports, but where do you draw the line between what games would be acceptable to the database and which games aren't?  You couldn't even base it off of "best selling" mobile games because crap like Clash of Clans which is pay-to-win is at the top of the charts.  Same for junk like Candy Crush Saga or that stupid crap they have Ahnold advertising.

Personally, I'm looking at deleting all of my "digital" game titles from my collection because really, I don't own them.  The purpose of a database cataloging a "collection" revolves around tangible goods.  At least for me anyway.

Yes, I completely agree with what you are saying, which is why I said I understand why there is no mobile category here. Although, again, you could say the same about steam. But I get that a line has to be drawn somewhere and that's cool.

I made a second account for my digital stuff, because while I do want to have a nice overview of it, I don't want it to mix with my physical collection. Now if only I would be updating it regulary...   :-[

Haha, I'm in the same boat. I know I own a lot more games than my collection is showing as I pick up Steam games quite regularly through bundles and such.  It's in heavy need of updating.

Going back to the topic at hand, I think one of the admins at some point said that the original goal of the site was to help document and catalog the variants of physical games so that collectors could give a true representation of the games they own without resorting to listing generic titles only.  With the prevalence of digital games now, having them become part of the database was an inevitable "compromise" (that word is being used very loosely and is no indication of my or the site's opinion of digital titles), especially now that there are physical PC items now that do not come with disc but rather a slip of paper with a code on it for Steam.

Mobile games is still a tricky area considering the amount of filler that exists on those shops, but I also understand that there are many ports of games that once ran on our old home consoles. 999 is a tricky one as it's not a full port of the original escape-the-room game but more of a visual novel.

To wind up this long-winded reply, we'll just have to continue to watch where mobile games take us. Perhaps there will be a time when they do show up on VGC!  :o

Yeah I initially didn't include them and often consider deleting them; ha tbh the only reason I've kept them there is it helps me personally remember what I've bought in case I fancy going back and playing something in the backlog :D

I definitely don't include things from Instant Games Collection and Games With Gold; as they were free and they can easily be taken away. I'd compare free mobile games to that.

With Pokemon Go getting penetration numbers on par with Twitter I can see a mobile future on the horizons a lot quicker than I ever thought for even classic console brands.

I don't even own a Iphone or Android device so I feel outdated for the new world.

I'm anxiously watching if the Neo, Scorpio, and NX implode the industry or drive us forward valiantly.
