Hi all!
I think there was another thread a while back about the first console/game system you ever purchased, but not sure if there's one about the first game you ever bought :)
I think the first game I ever bought was Golden Sun [GBA]

I wish I recalled where I bought it. I just remember that I had the plastic on it for as long as I could. I kept one drawer in my bedroom's dresser pretty empty, so I kept some precious things in there, and one of those was GS. I still have the CIB game, and it holds some great sentimental value. Time to get a protective case for it and my other GBA boxes :)

What's the difference?

There was one a while back about the first game system we ever purchased, is that what you meant? ???
As for my first game I bought, I don't entirely remember. :P Mega Man Battle Network 3: White or Pokemon Red used from an EB Games (back when they were still Electronics Boutique) are a couple of the earliest memories I still have because they actually mean something to me. Anything before that was either not significant enough for me to remember or my parents bought it for me.

LOL, yes! I'll update my post. Sorry for the confusion - that's what I get for posting while at work.

Yeah, I definitely played a lot of other games that my parents bought for my brothers (or they bought for themselves), but those early games that we purchased for ourselves with our own money can be pretty special.
I still remember taking all the things outside of the box and looking at them. That manual got a lot of readings.

It's probably not the first, but the first one I can specifically remember is The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX for Game Boy Color.

It's possible that the first game I acquired independently of my parents was Rampage for NES. I was in elementary school and traded a kid (some Z-Bots figures I think) for it.
-
Oh man, Rampage was awesome. I loved playing the little kid-sized version of that arcade cabinet at Chuck E. Cheese's.
I don't know if it was a custom cabinet or just one they had at the restaurant for whatever game was available. I was getting to be too old to play the game, probably, because I had to get on my knees to play it on that cabinet.

The first game I owned was Super Mario World. My dad baught me the SNES bundle when I was a kid.
But the first game I ever personally purchased with my own money was Maximum Carnage. I remember I did Odd jobs and saved up for it. I still remember the smell when I opened it. Childhoods fondest memories lol.

Right? Amazing what we remember. It's a good reason to encourage kids to save their money for something they really want (and not just candy).
I must've purchased Golden Sun with money from my first job or financial aid during my college days. Not a kid at that age, but I certainly felt like one!

First game I ever purchased was Sonic Heroes on the Gamecube
-
Independently of my parents? I want to say when I come across Super Castle Vania IV and Spin Dizzy when I found them in a thrift store for a couple dollars. Or maybe Red Zone, or Daytona USA and Alone in The Dark II, during my first and short lived attempt to get into classic game collecting back in the early 2000s.
-
I have no recollection as to how I aquired games as a kid, if I bought with my own money, or other people bought or a gift or what. I do remember some that I had purchased for myself, mainly Saturn games. Daytona USA, Fighters Megamix, Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball, NHL Playoff 96. I also remember systems such as the Saturn, Game Gear and Genesis. But as for which was the first, I may never know.
-
I don't know how you guys remember the first game you bought. I'm 24 and I can't even remember. I can only assume it was probably a PS2 game because that's what was around when I was 14 and I had a summer job. Then again, I had a Gamecube and GBA too. Meh, couldn't even tell you what system it seems.
-
I can't remember. I was a pretty young. But it had to be an NES game.

Pokemon Emerald

Hehe, my family wasn't very rich, though somehow we managed to get a couple of game systems over time. All the games I grew up playing were games my older brothers picked out, so I was really into the fact that I finally had something that was mine (that I chose).
-
The first game I distinctly remember buying a game I wanted was Wario Land 4 from Argos, I remember they only had 1 or 2 in stock. Excellent!!

It was like the Shulk amiibo of 2002, well maybe not that hard to find

Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii. One of the best purchases ever.
-
Shiiiiiiiit... either Tetris or TMNT Fall of the footclan for Gameboy.
I wanna say I mostly rented games during my childhood, handhelds were the only games that I really bought.
If not those, probably Surf Ninjas or Sonic the hedgehog for Game Gear.
-
My parents bought me games for gifts for holidays or birthday growing up, also rented a game every week from BlockBuster Video. The first game I've bought myself would have been Robo Pit for Sega Saturn I bought off an advertisement of an issue of Game Fan back in 1996 or 1997. I had to create a money order and mail it in. Was really excited about sending it off, and eventually receiving and playing it :P

Same for me. Definitely lived up to the hype.
-
Stuart Little: The Journey Home for Game Boy Color.
-
I'm pretty sure the first game I ever bought with my own money was Illusion of Gaia for the Super Nintendo. I read the instruction manual (y'all remember those, right?) on the way home from the game store.
-
First game I ever purchased on my own was a Platinum Super smash bros melee with a gamecube console :p
-
Cuthbert in space for the Commodere 64 on a cassette. And i still have it :D
-
The first game I distinctly remember shelling out my own cash for was Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! Talk about a an awesome purchase. I went to Wal-Mart and saw it sitting behind the counter. It was being held for someone. If they didn't come get it by (insert random time), I could buy it. Well, no one claimed it. After my mom had finished getting whatever she had to get we went back over to the little Nintendo cabinet and it was still there. I still have that game and manual to this day.
-
My memory is pretty fuzzy, but I "think" the first game I purchased with my own money was Chrono Trigger on DS.
-
The first game I bought (as in my father paid for it) was actually two games - Asteroids and Outlaw for the 2600. The first I bought with my own money was Empire Strikes Back for the same system.
-
The first game I can remember buying was Zaxxon on cassette for Atari 400. Wonder if I still have that somewhere...
Actually earlier I guess, I did buy Raiders of the Lost Ark for Atari 2600 for a friend for his birthday before I had any game consoles or computers.

I love these stories! I like to imagine that these first games were the cornerstones of our collections :D

The first game that I bought when I started "collecting" was Snake Rattle and Roll. It's not exactly a cornerstone.

Haha, I guess that can be another thread in itself... Our first games purchased were not necessarily our first games when we started "collecting."

It's kind of sad, I can't even recall when I started going to thrift stores and pawn shops and buying games.
I remember going from ebay only, to thrift stores, to pawn shops, to yard sales, to flea markets, to facebook groups... and then regressing backwards.
Like, I've had games from my childhood, but I don't really consider that I was collecting video games until I hit that point that I decided not to get rid of games any more. When I chose to... hoard.

ah, not that sad. I think there are a lot of collectors who didn't start off as collectors. They started off as game "consumers," renting, buying, borrowing games and then just selling them or letting go of them somehow when they were done. Later, they realize how many games they wish they had held on to, and thus the collecting bug burrows deep.
My bf was very much that sort of gamer, but he regrets selling off most of his games when he was younger. He still has a bit of a tendency these days to buy the hot new title and then sell it back, but after he moved in and saw my collection, he's a lot more interested in holding on to certain items (and looking into collector's editions over standards ::) ).

Yeah, I wanna say before I started "collecting" I had sold off most of my PS2 games down to like 10 games, pretty much only kept Wild Arms games, Timesplitters games, GTA: San Andreas, and WWE games (mostly because they are worthless). But now PS2 is one of my top platforms for which I own the most titles, next to Genesis and Steam... but quite a bit under SNES.
-
I bought games for years with Christmas or birthday money. But the first game I bought with my own cash, earned from my own first job was Super Castlevania IV and ActRaiser. Bought both with a SNES/Mario World bundle.
But for the sake of argument, Super Castlevania IV was my go-to game that I fully intended to buy first. ActRaiser just looked cool and thus, I picked it up as well.

Ah yes, I remember the days when games you wanted felt like a scarcity. Game holding was a big thing. We'd call a place up, ask if they had the game, and ask if they could hold one until we got there to buy it. There was no GS, there wasn't any infinite source to buy used copies of games at least, not around here, you couldn't just go online and buy something. It was like you get the game when you see it, or you might be out of luck. Who knows when more might be in stock.

Hey it's better than Sonic 3D Blast, atleast I think it is, maybe, probably, I dunno
