I need a list of about 20-25 good ones for a future show. and if you would like to come on and answer some of them (or rant) let me know. ;D
1. Aren't you a little to old to play video games?
2. If you like retro games so much, why not just download the ROMs?
And go.
-
I get this all the time... "why do you collect games?" " I don't get it" ...."what are you going to do with all those games?" ... "why dont you just play new games?"..
I just laugh and continue on with my day... but i really wanna punch them in the face. ;D
-
I get asked a lot why I don't just trade my games in at Gamestop when I'm done with them, as if that were actually an option that was worthwhile and not counterproductive to the whole "collecting" part of game collecting.
-
The only one I have heard, because my parents are collectors of a sort and I work with fellow gamers, is "yeah, enjoy wasting your money on stupid stuff while you can, because when you decide to grow up and be responsible and have bills you won't have the money for that shit and will regret wasting your money." Bought a house, pay bills, and I still buy stuff.
-
"Are you sure you're not addicted?"
Actually, that's a fair question.
-
"Is it for sale?"
-
" Why don't you get more normal hobbies, instead of wasting your time with this video crap?"
- family member as they continue to watch TV
-
"You should sell your collection and buy a *insert expensive noun here*."
-
"Are you ever going to grow out of that?"
"Sitting all the time is the new smoking."
Both of which came from my mother dearest.
-
When enough is enough? From my gf.
-
"Are you sure you're not addicted?"
Actually, that's a fair question.
Classic concern troll.
-
Do you have a girlfriend?
Do you really need all of this?
Is this worth anything?
Why don't you sell some of it?
Who still wants to play this old stuff?
My Dad asks me this, a lot of friends as well. Most people thinks it's cool though.
-
"How much did all this cost?"
-
The most common questions I get asked is.
1.) How much is it all worth?
While not "annoying" I always say the same thing. I have no idea but the last guy that sold a collection like mine got well over $200k.
2.) What would you do if it was all stolen or in a fire?
This is an annoying question to me. It's like showing off a new car and they ask what if someone crashed into it?
3.) Do you play (or beat) all of them?
While not "annoying" It's kind of a stupid question. With a collection like mine I can't play every game. Many I sample to see if its worth coming back to and sport games are lucky if they even get tested. lol
4.) What is the most valuable game you own?
Again not annoying, I just say there's a few worth over $1000 in my collection.
5.) I bet your Wife/Girlfriend hates you?
Well one I'm not married and two my GF thinks its the coolest thing. :P
In fact most of the women I show I game room to love it and act like a kid again. It's awesome.
6.) Do you have "name any game/console here"?
99% of the time the answer is yes. lol
7.) can you help me find a game or console?
In most cases I tell them I'll let you know if I find one. The only time it gets annoying is if they ask me to find them a rare/pricey game and expect me to sell it to them for $5. I always say the same thing, if you get up early and do the footwork and spend gas to help find it then yes you might get it for that price. Otherwise I'll give you the best price I can so I can use the money to get something I want. ;)
8.) How much did you spend buying this?
Its like people think I'm rich, I bought it all in one weekend. I tell them over the years I spent a lot of money but its over 20 years of collecting, a little here and a little there. Most from garage sales (as you guys know) I also do a lot of selling and trading to get the games I need so I don't have to spend so much. I kinda have to nowadays.
9.) Whats the point, in ten years no one will want this stuff. The discs will rot, there's going to be a market crash on games. Its all going digital and no one will want psychical media. You should sell it now before it become worthless.
This is an annoying thing I hear sometimes. Those people who want to dump on what you love. When I first started collecting old games, people looked at them as people look at VHS tapes today. I never did it because of "value" it's because I loved it.
10.) You should open a game store?
While yes it has crossed my mind, but I don't want my hobby to become my job.
I'm sure there's more but that's the top 10 I could think off.
-
I have had many of the questions from this thread asked to me as well. My favorite ever though was when someone just looked at me with a face of concern and simply asked "Why?" ;D
-
Do you have a girlfriend?
Haha, it's sad but people think that folks only like video games because they aren't in some sort of relationship. You can have both, and my relationship probably made my boyfriend take his collection a lot more seriously (because I take my personal collection seriously) ;D
-
I've never had anything asked about my collection that annoyed me, all of the people i know like it or just don't care about it or think it's neat. :o
-

Yeah, I couldn't really think of any questions I'd gotten that bug me. I love talking about it to people who seem generally interested. Most of the time, people aren't interested in games, so they don't pursue the conversation topic any further. Occasionally people will say "cool" and ask what games I'm playing currently, etc. It's a little awkward when they seem to want to talk about games but when you list off some games, they have no idea what you're talking about ::) Sometimes easier to say things like "Mario" or whatever to those folks.
-
"You should sell your collection and buy a *insert expensive noun here*."
That's the one I get the most. I've been saving for a couple of big purchases. "If you'd sell some of this stuff you could buy, blah.

GF/BF's are expensive.
-
I wish I got questions more often. Honestly, most of the people who come over haven't even mentioned it. Did have a group of guys over that thought it was cool. Other than that, no one has mentioned it.
-
I have more new than old games. Still, when people see my Mega Drive and N64 cartridges they say…
.
1. Why do you keep these old things?
2. This still works?
As for my Steam, Wii U and PS3 collections…
1. Are you rich?
2. Why you don’t buy a PS4? It’s so much better!
3. Have you played/beat all these games? (on daily basis)
In addition, as for my comic/manga collection, because I sure, you guys have heard this…
1. Why don’t you open a store?
2. Which title do you recommend? (It’s annoying when the person don’t know how to answer “what kind of thing you like?”. Which is 99% of times. How can anyone just say *insert genre here*)
3. Do you like *Insert popular title*? (Than the person only knows that and won’t change the topic)

Yeah, it's the stigma associated with video gaming in general. Most people assume if you collect video games and play them that you can't be anything other than a lonely, fat, nerd which simply isn't the case. I have tons of interests outside of video games like sports (baseball especially), mountain biking, film, reading, and lots of others. While I don't have a girlfriend right now, it is pretty funny that most people still scoff at the idea of collecting games and still have notions of what they believe a stereotypical gamer is.
-
My mom is the worst. It's always "When are you going to quit playing with toys?" or "All the money you've spent on that crap, you could have bought a new car." or something similar.
It's quite hypocritical when she bashes me watching animated shows/movies (she refuses to watch anything animated) or playing video games when she watched the boob-tube 24/7 since she retired. ::)
-
I guarantee almost everyone who bashes on gamers for being fat virgins or whatever have their own hobby that people could stereotype them for.
Im lucky that I dont deal with a lot of that. Cause I dont look or act like a typical "gamer" most people dont come at me with the BS.
-

I don't fit that pigeonhole stereotype myself of unwashed, smelly, pimply-faced virgin. My wife looks pretty decent if I do say so myself and I have two beautiful daughters. I guess the most outward sign of my geekdom is a Darth Vader sticker in my back car window.
-
GF/BF's are expensive.
Would like to say that you are right but after I got married she became twice expensive anyway only two questions have been made of my collection and both of them came from my wife, have to say that she only asked once because of my answer or should I say questions, answered her questions with more questions :D
- If they are becoming more expensive each day why you don't sell them ?
My kidney and heart are expensive too, do you want me to sell them ?
- Do you seriously need too have that many games ?
Do you seriously need to have that many pair of shoes ?
-
the most annoying thing I get asked is whenever I make a large purchase my gf always asks "whats it worth and how much did you spend on it?" which is for the most part always cartridge based games.
-
A couple people at work ask me how I can stand to play "old" games, when I'm talking about PS3 stuff I still play...
I better not let them know I even go back as far as SNES sometimes...
-
I thought of another annoying statement people make about my game collection.
"You have all those games and that is the best game you have?"
the context of this is from people who only play a few games religiously and think that what im playing right now is a game that I have been playing for the last 6 months straight or think that I only play titles in my collection that are 10/10 quality
-

This one is more often asked by game sellers and other gamers - "Do you play them, or do you just collect them?" I get sick of hearing that.

Do people that collect stamps mail a bunch of shit?

Do people still collect stamps? If so, point them my way because I always run out of stamps.
-
I once told a customer's kid at work that I played/collected games. He looked at me confused and said, "but you're a GIRL." I told him yes, a girl with 2 dozen consoles. I think I broke his brain a little bit. Most of the kids who find out about my collection just immediately ask about whatever the most popular console amongst their friends is & don't care about what else I might have.
Most of the adults I know are either nerdy enough to think it's cool, or understanding enough to see I enjoy it and feign enthusiasm for me. Sometime I get "tell me if you find game X for cheap"- if it costs enough that you can't find one you can afford, chances are I don't own it & I'm going to keep a 'cheap' copy for myself. I'll tell you if I get a second cheap copy though. It's happened. Once.
The more annoying thing I get is simply, "What do you have?" Nobody seems to be happy with "I have a couple dozen consoles" or "I have hundreds of games". They want specifics, and I haven't figured out how to quickly think through my whole collection for highlights relevant to who I'm talking with. Especially since most of the time I barely know or just met the person.

Off topic
Gamers and collectors who call them selves but most annoyingly especially others who are into retrogaming nerdy.
It's really annoying, I can imagine for RPG's but for arcade games and 2D fighting games that definitly not the case IMO
Everyone played arcade classics such as metal slug or street fighter back in the day: the cool kids the nerds casuals It's for everyone. Or classics such as ghouls and ghosts nothing nerdy about that. Earthbound yea sure but games like mario, castlevania, shinobi, strider contra shoot em ups the classic games from back in the day, games that everyone played It's really anoying that people stereo type it to nerdy especially from collectors and gamers and not even from casuals who are not into retro gaming. It's really strange in my opinion that people within the community are the one with this stereo type while others around me find it cool while never using the stereo type because allot of them played the classics back in the day as a kid.
Okay wearing clothes of franchises only playing hardcore RPG's etc sure but just collecting and playing especially older (arcade) classics overall definitly not nerdy at all I would call it a class of It's own for people who still play them I'd prefer the term kids with nostalgia goggles wich includes me.
The nerdy term is used way to broad for everyone who collects and plays retro games especially with the older classics and certain franchises wich are for everyone.
Just my opinion take it with a grain of salt, I just find it pretty strange why people seem to use the term on everyone in the community. I like RPG's but I'm more of an arcade guy with nostalgia goggles myself. I've definitely seen some real nerds and most play league of legends or are really hardcore wearing game clothes etc while openly talking about games all the time in public.
Not everyone is like that, I would not use the term nerd so lightly, most collectors I know including me don't look or act nerdy at all. Just some dudes with nostalgia goggles who never grew up.

i have a friend like that. asking me what i waste my time on video games
and yet. all he talks about tv shows, and he watches all the popular ones too... and when he tries to talk to me about them, i shrug, since outside of sports, and history documentaries and space stuff, i dont watch any of these popular tv series.
-
I'll bite. I've had a few run ins with people over mine. I'll post the questions/statements and my usual responses to them. I also tend to be rather snarky with my retorts on occasion.
How do you afford it? I mean I can't go buy games like you do.
I don't smoke. I don't drink. I don't waste money pushing fuel into my vehicle driving circles around every other town in the county on the weekends. That's how. Yard sales and swap meets not withstanding. ;)
Why do you collect these things?
Because it's something I have loved to do since I was a child. Besides, didn't you just buy your sixth (insert thing here) the other day?
Do you own (insert obscure game/console here)?
The answer is usually yes on this one.
Can I borrow (insert system/game)?
The answer on this one is a definite, No.
Why don't you just get rid of it and download the emulators/roms?
Because I don't want to. Besides 15 feet of shelving is a lot more impressive than 2.5 inches. :P
What do I have to do to have a collection like yours?
Hit yard sales and the like. Peruse the internet for dedicated collector sites, most usually have a marketplace with some good deals. Hitting the Power Ball jackpot while not necessary wouldn't hurt anything.
What are you going to do in (x) years when the prices bottom out?
You mean some of this may become affordable again? Could we get that lucky?
My system is acting up can you look at it for me?
You're assuming that because I collect these I know how to work on them. Well it's your lucky day, bring it over.
Why not quit playing video games and watch T.V. instead?
I won't even dignify that with a response on most occasions.
How much is it worth?
I honestly don't know prices fluctuate rapidly so it's ever-changing. I know how much I want for it. $10 per game and hardware goes with it, if selling it all in a bulk transaction. I have been low-balled on this multiple times. Right down to somebody coming in and looking it over and telling me that at most he would give $2000 for it. It has too much filler in it for the price I was asking. This of course pissed me right the hell off.

(Walking into the room while I'm playing a game), "What game are you playing?"
For some reason this question frustrates the hell out of me. The only time it's okay is if it's a fellow gamer and they just don't recognize the game immediately. But this is less than 1% of the time. And even then wait more than .5 seconds and you might just figure it out. In every other case, it's a non gamer usually trying to start small talk, or just engage me somehow, because heaven forbid a moment of 'awkward silence'. If you don't recognize the game, then what information do you hope to glean from the title? Knowing the title is worthless information for a non gamer. Not to mention that you'll forget it one second after I tell you. If you wish to chat about the game, here are some more acceptable questions:
"What kind of game is that?"
"How do you play?" or "What are your goals?"
"Is it fun?"-still a stupid question, but at least you'll learn something useful from the answer.
Or even "Which guy are you?" - "Um, it's a strategy game, I'm every guy." ;)
If you just want to chat, simply ask to talk about something. I'll gladly pause or even turn off my game so we can talk about something you care about.

Sometimes this one is gold though. My wife walked into the living room while I was Playing Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia, right when this scene came about. Our eyes met, there was this awkward silence. Then that question drops with a hint of worry in her voice. I couldn't resist I just started laughing.

I get all the ones mentioned but this one peeves me the most:
How do you find the time?
I've yet to find a simple answer because the question is wrong on so many levels.
1st. I don't find the time. I make the time.
2nd. It's usually asked in a way that implies it's a waste of time. Investing in my mental well being by allowing myself some downtime is nothing I should be ashamed of just as working ones self to death is nothing to be proud of.
3rd. Many people spend as much time if not more on watching sports and I never hear someone ask where they find the time for that.
4th. I've been providing for myself and my family for two decades. How I manage my time is no ones business and I fail to see the need for them to call it into question.

quoted for excellent answer ;)

I just thought of one. I was at an arcade over the weekend and I played Dance Dance Revolution like a middle manager. I don't wanna say I played "like a boss" but I still held my own, so I figure that middle manager is appropriate. Anyways.
Years ago when I first started getting into DDR, I wasn't very good. So, what did I do? Instead of playing an RPG or Smash Bros. with my brothers, I would play DDR. I would practice. Some months later I had some friends over and we busted out the dance pads and such. I showed them how much better I had become and this one guy had the audacity to say...
"Someone has way too much time on their hands."
Yeah, we aren't friends anymore. I can't stand that statement. This jerk-off had the audacity to say that when he was spending hours on end watching television or playing Ever-f*******-quest.

Ah yes, the much more rude way to ask "how do you find the time?"
-
"Someone has way too much time on their hands."
Ugh, this one. Got this a lot from most adults as a child. Also, I'd get that from some friends when I would tell them I beat a game within a week of release.
My brother actually just did this to me after I told him I beat like 80% of the Assassin's Creed franchise and I only started back in April.

Isn't it awful? These days, I always need to have a rebuttal ready just in case I'm meeting new folks and tell them of my gaming accomplishments.

Nice. Any quips you have that you enjoy defaulting to? I usually go with, "Oh really. Weren't you the one who told me that you binge watched [insert random show here]?!"

Usually something along the lines of not sucking at video games, making good money, or not having to work overtime. My brother makes way more money than me, but he also works 50-70 hour work weeks.
-
Those are some good ones. I'll have to remember those.
-
"do you plan to ever play all of those?"
no, honestly, no. i'm a collector first, not a player. sorry not sorry.
"why not just sell them?"
nah
"you must just play games all the time"
i draw and write too. and work a fuckload.
so no
"what's your favourite game?"
my brain scatters and i go blank-faced at this one. for a lot of reasons.
i never answer this with anything other than a shrug.
"so do you own [game]?"
probably not, because i don't play (therefore, i don't collect) AAA garbage, and 90% of the time, [game] is an overblown AAA title
"do you just buy random games?"
no, i collect, but i'm broke too. i only collect atm games i know i'll probably enjoy to some degree.
mainly jrpgs tho.
i'd love to be able to collect random games, i just can't afford that, so i have to prioritise my cash. if i know i won't like it, i probably won't buy it, and it's partially why i haven't really gotten into retro collecting yet (too much crap on old consoles to have to dig through and i don't have the time rn to do checks while i'm out. i'll just stick to more modern collecting for now)
-
Will you ever actually play all of these? Another one that pisses me off is how much have you spent on all this?

When my wife asks me why I spend so much on games and comics, I replied with: "How much have you spent on clothes?"

the bane of all questions ever asked of me "whats your favorite game?" all of them thats why there in my collection

A lot of people have made me questions about my gaming habits and collection in all these years too, but most were innocent questions from people who just aren't close to gaming. So answering them didn't annoyed me at all in most cases (price? why so many? favorite game? where can i get one like yours?). People who actually come to know my collection personally are usually very pleased to see those games, either by the collection itself of by pure nostalgia.
Of course, some of them are really annyoing but they are a very small percentage. Some of the questions and opinions were:
"You should stop playing that, you're too old for those toys"
"Why don't you sell your collection and buy a car?" (why people don't sell their cars and buy games?)
"This is an old game, so i will only pay you 5 dollars (wanting a rare $100 game)"
"This is an addiction and you should drop it."
"Who cares for those puny games? You should practice sports." ¬¬
"Games are a waste of time, you learn nothing from them!"
"Do you have violent games? The make people violent. They are absurd and should be banned forever." (what about violent movies? books? evening news?)
"Video games are for people who are lazy and don't want to think."
"Games make people anti-social beings. Are you that anti-social?" (do why does videogames always had a second controller port? and what about online gaming?)
"How does your wife/girlfriend actually approves that?"
I don't mind explaning or answering people when i see they just are curious and are not close to gaming, i neved did. In fact, i've always wished people could see games with as much love as i do. So, as it happens with all of you, what really annoys me is intolerance and prejudice. And they are not gaming exclusivities.

Hahahhaaha. I haven't laughed that hard in a while.
