Title: NEWS: Forum Overhaul
Post by: matt on March 13, 2012, 09:24:54 pm
Hey all,

If you are seeing this, it means that my forum conversion was successful! I've spent the last few night manually writing some code to convert the site over to a more advanced forum system. This new system will give us more flexibility to grow as well as sticks to some of the more traditional forum features.

So far the only thing that hasn't made the conversion were the Private Messages. Still working on this.

Let me know if you have any issues. I'll be spending the rest of the night working out the bugs. :)

Thanks and enjoy!

Saving all of the users, all of the topics and threads, but missing the PM's I still consider this full of win.

This is much better than the previous forum look!  Great job!

Ooooooh, I like the new system!

Yay!

I am noticing a few cache errors. If you encounter a page that starts with 'Warning' and contains a bunch of gibberish after it, just refresh. I'm looking into it.

Yup, hit one, but a quick refresh and it went away.

Site is much improved on my iPhone, too.

I seem to have lost access to the staff forum.

We fired you @foxhack.  ;D

But ya, matt's working on that stuff right now.

Yep I'm working on that.

In the meantime, the cache issue has been resolved.

Very sexy new look to the forum. I like the feel of this a lot more than the last one.

Just in case anyone else had the same problem I did where you couldn't log in to the forum just log out and then log in again and you'll be logged into the forum again.

One oddity that I just noticed is that after I posted it took me back to the main page and not back to my message or the thread.

Yeah, worked for me *thumbs up*

I'm disappointed in the new forum... Where's the free cake?? I kid, I kid, good stuff.

*Edit*
I guess the post count only counts new posts.

I could be wrong but does it seem like there have been threads lost from the General forum?

Maybe I'm just surprised that there have been no postings since the 3rd

hmm I'll look into this.

EDIT: and I did. No threads lost. Just slow activity in there.

Looks like I need to post without really adding anything just to increase my post count..... so really nothing new!

I did see that the "Latest Forum Posts" is not up and running.

Not a problem, just something I saw.
Also... new forum means new avatar for me! A Battletoad is much cooler than a Ninja Baseball Bat Man anyways :P

Yup no problem now.

I know that you have a lot on your plate with the change over but it would be nice to have a link to the poster's collection either under the user name next to Profile or PM or it could even be in the profile.

I'm off for the night. I know there are a few things still yet to be addressed. One of which being the forum profile settings. Right now there is no way to handle your notifications. Hopefully I'll fix this tomorrow. I've been at this for 2 days ha. Gnight all.

I was ready to change mine, but then I saw how it looked on the little info panel at the top.

Alright, I did a new avatar too, I doubt it'll last too long. Cute gaming things are OK, but it's when things just are "cute" that I feel too girly to be spouting off publishers and developers.

I just went with my usual avatar instead of Big Cheese.

Hehe everyones a newbie now!

This looks a lot more like the forums I had on my old website. i like these a lot better :)

Might I suggest changing the (http://vgcollect.com/forum/Themes/actualism_202/images/off.png) and (http://vgcollect.com/forum/Themes/actualism_202/images/on.png) to the nes cart? :)

edit: and access to staff forums :)

Also you gotta enable spam control.

http://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,747.0.html
http://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,743.0.html

etc

Looking good otherwise, though I did love the minimalism of the old forum. Oh well!

The post count here and on the stats page

http://vgcollect.com/madmax/stats

Don't correspond. I'm sure that it'll be fixed soon. Just pointing it out..

Also @Matt (does this tag still work?) if you need help with the forum, setting up groups, fixing post counts (if you want to adjust them to reflect stats page) and just any other type of stuff. Feel free to ask, I have quite a bit of experience setting up this kind of forum.

Edit: the off topic section is getting spammed like crazy :/

I second this.

I also thought about this last night. I was thinking either the cart that dstone attached, or the grey cart from the app menu.

Cool, I changed my avatar, too.  I liked the old one, but there wasn't any way to view it larger (the old forum profile allowed a larger size of the avatar) so it was illegible.

If anything, I was very used to viewing the forums before through "all discussions," ordered by most recent post/reply and not having to go back and click on different subforums.

Anyway to access a view like that?

ADDED: Also, awesome work, @matt! :)

You can click on the "unread posts since last visit" link. But that's just new posts.

What I hated about that set up though was, when you stickied a topic in one section of the forum. All the stickies were listed at the top of the "all discussions", so eventually we could have had the entire page 1 filled with stickies. I know I had to trim down the stickies once, because it was getting a little ridiculous.

I figured it out! We are missing the what are you playing thread and the recently added thread from General unless they got moved.

Also I thought about changing my avatar but it's already perfect.

You're right. That's what we're missing. :(

I made this post and the forum puked at me, yikes

Just realized that the @name thingy doesn't do the link like in the old forum, like when you wrote @scott or something and you could click their name.

*Edit*

and then I see it was mentioned in another topic >_<

I just noticed in the badge thread that none of the images are showing up, just the HTML code.  I am guessing this forum only accepts BB code?

I used HTML to post my 3D renderings last night, so it looks like it's still available.

Thanks!  What was it that caused the HTML to show?
Title: Re: NEWS: Forum Overhaul

I assumed that any html that was already in the database would still work. It appears that isn't the case though...hmm

Regardless going forward we'll be sticking to BBCode. It's safer and the standard for forums.

Plus now we can have folks just attach pictures to their posts anyway. No need to embed them in the posts.

I love the new forum. I lived with the old one, and deep down I hated so much about it. This one is sooo much nicer and full of win... other than the surge of spambots to ban hammer.
