Title: How many do you consider to many games?
Post by: dreama1 on June 17, 2016, 01:57:25 am
How many do you consider to many games in ones possession?

Do you have a limit? Or does the buy/trade dynamic keep it from overflowing?

When you have (1) large shelf of games is too many for me. Then again, this is coming from someone who doesn't collect for the sake of collecting, rather game player first. I'm also against buying game sets for the sake of completion. Anything mediocre or less I'll trade or sell off.

Too many games for me is if the bulk of the games are games I'd never play and don't have interest in playing. I try to collect only items I want to play. Doesn't have to be today or tomorrow but one day I'll play it.

For anyone else, if it's all stuff they want to play, I can't judge them for the size of their collection.

Depends on the person. I have many games that I will never play, and have desire to. But the history behind the game, or the people that made it are interesting enough to me that I want to own a part of it.

Space is probably a limiting factor for most people. I have a dedicated game room in my house, which not everyone has, so space is not a deciding factor for me.

I would image the whole "collection" aspect will become less popular now that digital is a growing trend.

I've never quite understood the appeal or desire to go for a complete set for a system. It's one thing if it's a relaticely small library, but I personally know a lot of people who have or are in the process of obtaining large console libraries. There is so much crap mixed in that not only does it lower the quality of what you currently have, but it just takes up so much space!

Personally speaking, I only purchase a game that I plan to play or plan to replay. That number will slowly but surely increase over time because there are moments when I feel the need to discard things that no longer really "fit" in with the rest of my stuff. Space isn't an issue because the entire bonus room is dedicated to gaming stuff. And, since my partner grew up building houses and such, he can build a shelf when needed.

For other folks, I don't think there's such a thing as too much. It's their money, so if they want to use it purchase games that will just collect dust, then I'm happy as long as they're happy.

Like Kash, I really only buy games that I'm going to play. So my collection never really grows at a fast pace for it to be unruly. Space is also a huge limiting factor for me.

My normal response is there is no such thing.

But recently, there is this guy who has been posting on facebook all of the stuff he has been buying on ebay (allegedly for steal prices) and every so often he will post pictures of certain things in his collection.  Like how he owns 3 Misadventures of Tron Bonne and 12 copies of Symphony of the Night... for no reason.  When asked why he does it, his response is that he can't turn away these awesome deals he gets for the games.

When you own multiple copies of a single game for absolutely no reason, that's too many games.

There is not such thing in quantity but if I decide to purchase some games instead of purchasing food or something that my daughters/wife needs then this is when they are to many, for example right now I got a couple of extra bucks at my wallet and even when I want two titles (but I don't really need them) and can afford to purchase them I prefer to keep the money in case of any emergency.

Well, most of us have collections that are MUCH larger than your average gamer's collection with 100s or 1000s of games. I don't think many us limit ourselves much with our collections.

*shrug* Myself, Telly and Lady D mentioned we just buy the ones we intend to play (or in some cases replay) instead of going willy-nilly with the purchasing.

You can never have enough games! Although I would imagine having a hoard of games that you'd never play might qualify as too many. I typically only purchase games I actually have an interest in and will play. I don't see much of a point in collecting (not that there's anything wrong with that) simply for the sake of displaying your boxes on a shelf, never to be played.

I also don't typically sell or trade games I like once they're in my collection. I'm still in the process of purchasing games back from my childhood that my foolish younger self traded in to Funcoland/Gamestop all those years ago.

Well, it varies from person to person, but I do purposely limit myself with how much I spend on games, or how many games I bring in from month to month. I think it varies depending on who you ask :)

I disagree.

I wouldn't mind having multiple copies of symphony of the night when the price is a steal. Tron bonne is one of the more expensive titles in the US but also in Pal land and It's a megaman spinoff . These aren't your ordinary games they are worthy to have multiple copies of.

I personally think someone is a bit jealous  ::)

Anyways back on topic in my opinion you can never have to many games.

Everyone has different reasons for collecting, certain people go for full sets while other collect only the better titles or there is that group of people who only buy a select few games.

If one has multiple copies of many many bad games without any nostalgia or any reason at all than one might have to many games but one can;t judge a book by It's cover.

That's so tough... I've definitely acquired a few dupes of items because the prices were good or I was buying a small lot of games and those items were included.  But I also feel like those copies should be attainable by other people at prices that are affordable to *them*. Someone else may be able to afford to pay another 10 or 20 bucks and still get a deal, but others might not have that luxury.

It happens more often than some would care to admit. Some gamer on youtube; his wife left him after his collection got so big. But this just brings up another headache of a question doesn't it?

No, I get that situation.

I guess I'm just being judgey, because he's either lying or has a really weak definition of steal.  He bought an Ogre Battle complete for PSX and a VGA graded R-types and claimed he got them for $80 total and paid in ebay bucks.  The only VGA graded R-types that has sold on ebay sold for $100.  And ebay bucks is what, 2% back?  He said he paid for it all with ebay bucks, so what's that $4k spent in a quarter?

It's all very conflicting.

if you have the space, funds, time and love of gaming i dont consider any collection to be to large. (or small for that matter)I can find some thing to admire in everyone's collections. Its whatever makes you happy.

I'm not an everything game/console collector. So I solely go for games and console that I like. That is the reason why the game part of that collection (now being at roughly 480 games across all platforms) will never exceed 1000 and the systems part has been set at 85 (half way there). I have a predetermined checklist that I update regularly that helps me to achieve that goal. But to clearly answer the op's question the limit is the physical space I have to store the games/consoles.

Speaking of space, I'm wondering the best way to deal with all of these collector's boxes. The majority of mine are in drawers or in storage in the attic, which is a shame because they're so nice looking.

having a bunch of random shitty games for the sake of having a collection 'artificially' inflated (quantity over quality) but then

i have fucking a bug's life on ps1 lmao
and i got it for a dollar and i just couldn't say no to a dollar lmao.

and i'll admit i see full NES collections and get jelly af even tho i don't ever ever ever want a full nes library because it's 80% trash.
if i saw a full wii collection i'd be jelly too, even tho that shit is 95% trash.

so idk. on one hand i think it's worthless and 'too much' and on the other i think it's the coolest damn shit... maybe it's just my age.

like i could say 'alphaomegasin has too many damn games' and i know he'll never play half of them no less complete them... but some people collect bottle caps, yo, and you can't use those for shit. my grandfather has so many bottle caps (gonna rob his ass if fallout becomes irl, sorry pops) but that's just what he... DOES. my grandmother has sea shells. hundreds of thousands of shells.
so yeah, i want to say there is a 'too much' but i know how 'the itch' works. sometimes i get 'the itch' to play a truly god-awful game, or a complete piece of trash shovelware for the lulz, or a specific shitty game, or whatever.
so having some trash games in the collection is never too bad an idea.

basically, too hard to say.

mine are currently in storage just because I cant trust butting them on my current shelves (they are really cheap) but I plan on putting them on top of my shelves in the gap between them and the ceiling and tetrising them to fit with no gaps to the back wall.

I hate the thought of putting them in an attic where it gets so hot, but they take up too much damned space.  I may go buy some totes and start stuffing them in totes to go in one of my attics.

My attic is well protected and insulated, so I'm not too worried about those getting heavily damaged. Something I like to do is consolidate by putting smaller boxes into bigger ones. For instance, the two LEs for Xillia and Xillia 2 are massive and able to store a bunch of the smaller ones.

I'm getting ready to have my roof re-done and I'm thinking I may see about getting ridge vents installed (I think that's what they are called) because they keep the attic cooler in general.  and I'm hoping that storing them in totes will protect them from any bugs or if the roof leaks for some crazy reason.

I've had my collection in a garage since September, it's now over 100 degrees on a regular basis. So far, so good, nothing damaged (knocks on wood).

Next tax-return, we're using the money to convert some of the space in the garage into a proper room.
