What are the best offline co-op games?
Atari 2600 to present day.
-
Wizard of Wor for the 2600 and Centipede for the 7800 are two of my favorite classic co-op games.
-
Now that I think about it I haven't played too many actual co-op games: Pikmin 2, Ratchet Gladiator, Crash Bash, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Super Mario Galaxy. The only ones that I kind of enjoyed co-op.
I find that I've had just as much, if not more fun with friends playing single-player games: Luigi's Mansion, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Vagrant Story to name a few.

- Bubble Bobble
- The Simpsons: Arcade Game
- Kirby Superstar
- Captain Commando
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
- The Adventures of Cookie & Cream
- Captain America and The Avengers
- Dungeon Explorer
- The Combatribes
- X-Men (1992)

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is so much fun co-op! I really enjoy playing that with friends if you have enough GBAs and link cables. :o

Any Mario kart other than the SNES version.
Diablo III.
Hyrule Warriors.
Baldur's gate.

Just one person playing really, these 3 games specifically have drawn in a lot of collaboration in the past, I've still enjoyed and had a great time while someone else is playing. So you could label that Collab instead of Co-op

Diablo III for sure. It has more actual play hours on my PS3 than any other game. I think other than MK, it has the top play hours on my 4 as well.

Did you ever try diablo on ps1 by any chance? It had a co-op mode.

I have it. It's a horrible game on the PS.

Guess that's why I'd never heard about Diablo being on PlayStation

While I haven't done this myself, I heard Resident Evil 5 is way better with a co-op partner, since the AI is kinda crap. I still enjoy the game solo, but I certainly could imagine that game being a lot more fun with a competent player partner.
-
If you like Musou style games, those are a blast with local co-op.

I've played it a little bit with my roommate, and it is a lot of fun co-op, while still being a decent challenge.

A few really god ones I've played:
Champions of Norrath and Champtions of Norrath Return to Arms
Yoshi's Wooly World

* Bubble Bobble
* Contra
* Rampage (It can be co-op... until one of you "accidentally" eats the other and then it becomes a brawler forget the stinking buildings... meanwhile the third player knocks down the rest of the city taking the lead and the newspaper pops up reminding you what the whole point is and then it is co-op again until that damned monkey boy knocks you off a building....)
* Double Dragon (At least until the end)
* Gauntlet (Blue wizard needs food badly... ahh foo... ^%@^#!! the damn elf just shot the food... and thus begins a life long hatred of elves.)
* Golden Axe (All's fair in love and gnome punting)
* TMNT/Xmen/Simpsons etc... cooperative brawlers (Up to six people crowded around a single cabinet working together is awesome)
* Xenophobe (Triple Split Screen action)
Being a huge Atari fan I wanted to put more Atari games on this list but multiplayer games were almost exclusively competitive or turn based back then. Almost all of these became series for good reasons.

Final Fantasy VI can be two player, even though it's not very involved. You take control of a some folks in battle and your friend takes control of the rest. It doesn't sound fun, but back in the day my friend and I would just bond as we power leveled by killing Cactuars in that tiny desert. It was a lots of fun.

I've quite enjoyed playing Demon's Souls swapping back and forth every time you die.
