Thank the gaming gods!
I used to LOVE it when they were still FuncoLand and I could get all kinds of stuff there.
-
There's no way this is worth doing, trading or buying them online lol
-
Lol time to buy a bunch of bootleg Pokemon games and trade them in.
-
I know it's probably not a big deal to those in bigger cities. But I live in a rural area, which has lots of ruralness for miles around. So for a chain like GameStop to do this again, it's a Godsend for me.
-
I'm curious how this will work out... I'd love it if they sold the retro stuff in stores, but I have a feeling that they'll take in retro stuff but will send it out to their warehouses and have the items be sold online only :'(
If anything, hopefully this makes it easier to obtain items in general.
-
How it reads, this is online only, they are only taking in the trades at the stores, so you won't be going into Gamestop and seeing shelves of old games. There's no space to do that in most stores.

im still going to stop by the gamestops around me and ask if there are any of these old trade ins in the back.
-
Cool, time to trade in my copy of Super Mario Bros. for $0.25 only for them to turn around and sell it for $15.

Usually this won't work. This happens with other items, too, that get traded in at GameStop. They get boxed up to be shipped to a warehouse somewhere where they're cleaned, etc. and packaged to be sold online.
-
They sell them via the website because as a company they don't get enough Retro trades to stock stores with a decent enough selection.
Having a retro section in store would probably be a point of ridicule unless the company invested heavy into buying up mom and pop stores or collections online to fill their stores.
-
This sucks for local Mom & Pop stores, for thrift stores, for yardsales, and for me. Now, folks will bring boxes of retro games to GameStop and not thrift stores or local stores. They're taking the chance of finding out back and shooting it in the head.
-
Yeah how much can you give me for EarthBound and Pocky & Rocky?
Erm… let's see, how's 40 dollars trade-in credit sound?
>:(
Seriously though, I think it's a good idea but I feel bad for local mom and pop shops. I've already seen many of those go the way of the ghost because of Game Stop.
-
Sad thing is actually people are failing for this and will trade their juicy uncommon titles for peanuts...

What's even more pathetic is that even after all that some pricy titles are still being sold by the game shop for peanuts ???
-
I don't like the idea too much, it's just another reseller. The biggest, baddest and meanest of them all. A scalper with decades of experience of milking the gaming community dry on trade ins and used game sales getting into the retro business with the sheer intent to exploit it. A reseller that snaked people so much it became a corporation. They will pay pennies on the dollar for retro games and than flip them for 100 times profit and prices will most likely see a sky rocket. I think resellers are one of the biggest problems in the retro community, people who buy for cheap and flip for tons of profit above retail price to scam true collectors. gamestop is the mother of that.
I think it should be left for true mom and pop stores or collectors. The way it always should have been, not a chain that is simply trying to make a quick buck due to their slow and incoming death. Its so dreamy of a huge retail chain selling retro games with fair prices and huge selection everywhere. but gamestop wont do that. they are gamestop. they will overprice and undercut everyone and the idea will most likely flop because based on their online prices. ebay is much cheaper. they want 25 for super Mario world. 5 dollars more than an already high retail. :( 15 for Super Mario Bros? 30 for Zelda? No way. I hope they don't sucker new collectors and thus drive prices so high. This is dangerous I think.

If there is one upside to games going digital it will be that gamestop will die with it
-
Well at least this isnt being rolled out here in Canada haha. Though i guess if they did it may make it easier to find certain things without importing it from the states online... Local pickups for good prices are essentially dead here. :/

That's terrible to say but it's true. I know many of us will relish the day GameStop goes the way of Blockbuster
-
The other problem too is that it seems pretty easy to make bootleg copies and trade them in and dupe others since I'm not sure if the warehouse adequately checks all of the stuff that comes in. There's also no way to check if you're getting a complete package ( especially since no Saturn games came with their cases), which is something that I could at least do by going to a physical stores.
Not to mention their horrible customer service for online orders, it just doesn't seem like it would work very well in practice.
-

Can we trade Blockbuster for Gamestop? I want video stores to return lol
-
while the stores will take all these old games in, they wont be selling them in store. These will all be shipped to a warehouse and sold online at ebay prices or higher. Not good news for us or Gamestop seeing how I can't see this be successful for them.

I go back and forth when it comes to GameStop. In some ways, I'm thankful for them because I'm able to get new releases without any trouble. I look at my copy of Azure Striker Gunvolt Dual Pack as an example; I was the only one in my area to get a copy because I reserved one. You have to take the time to reserve them, but it's somewhat similar to buying something online via Amazon.
But, there are things I can't stand about the store. They range from little things like those terrible, circle stickers that leave tons of residue to the people behind the counter. I'm sure that the cashiers probably dislike trying to sell game "insurance" or ask about preordering.
This announcement doesn't really effect me, though. There's no way in hell I'd buy or sell an older game from GS.
-
I skipped through most of the comments, sorry.
Sometimes Gamestop can have really good trade values, it just depends on what you are trading. I've done it, and a bunch of my buddies have done it, where you can trade in loose disc games and get just about what they sell for. I think I traded in Skyward Sword for Wii a year or so back and got at least $40 for it. I know I traded in a loose copy of Sims 3 for Wii for $10 within the past year.
Now back to the main topic. I had a conversation with an SGA a couple of days ago about this, because I thought all stores were accepting trade-ins already. They were previously only accepting certain trade-ins. Now they are accepting ALL trade-ins. Which I think might turn into the getting 25 cents for certain games, but the pokemons and marios will still get moderately good value. I wanna say when it started Super Mario World was paying out higher than it was worth.
Anyway, one of my local stores has been accepting all trade ins for quite some time, and they had approval to sell retro titles in store. I can even take a picture next time I go in if you really want proof. Anything questionable looking, they still send off to corporate for refurbishing and such, but CIB games or cartridge games in good shape, they stay in store. Their inventory hasn't changed in the past few weeks, which could just be all the good stuff getting snatched quickly, but they've had Goldeneye, Starfox 64, a handful of GBA games, a couple of Genesis games, a couple of Xbox games, and Wind Waker for GCN.
Most stores system doesn't have a way of printing out stickers with proper prices for retro games, which is why they can't and won't sell them. But some stores have the proper prices in their system, so when they print out stickers, they CAN sell them in store.
On that same note, I frequently buy retro games from Gamestop, I rarely KEEP the games, given that most folks will trade in loose discs and buying online is total miss or miss, with the ever so infrequent hit. I bought a stack of $20-30 Xbox titles on Gamestop for about $5 a piece, if any came complete, grand, and come loose, oh well it just gets returned. I got my box last night, 1 loose disc, 4 in case no manual. *shrug* Of course, I also ordered a BRAND NEW game off the website, because I didn't want to go find a store that had it and wind up with a gutted copy... so they had a store mail me their gutted copy. Kind of pissed about that.

Same. I loved Blockbuster and just wish there was something still like it for nostalgia's sake.
Game Stop can stay or go, I could care less.

Agreed. But I miss the mom & pop video stores even more. You could find all kinds of treasures in those places. Blockbusters were all mostly the same.

I lived in a town with only one, so it might as well have been mom & pop practically, though we had a few local videostores, though only one proper lasted for a good while into the mid 2000's. I worked in the small Blockbuster back in early 2000 during high school. Good time working there. I just miss browsing through because most were all there, none of the exclusivity deals and timed deals that streaming sites have. You wonder if Netflix has that movie you want to watch on a spur of the moment? Probably not, they've been dropping the amount of movies they keep around.

Ahh, the inevitable GS hate. I always look at like this, if you don't like their trade in values, don't sell to them. Just a novel idea, really. But GS is the first place I go to pick up a new release, or to buy modern games pre-owned. I would hate to ever have that luxury taken away. I despise buying something that I want right away on the Internet, and invariably waiting 5 to 7 business days to get it at a fair shipping rate. Usually loose all enthusiasm by then.
Would love it if they expanded store inventory to include classic games, but that would require a highly competent staff on hand at each store, and many expensive new store fixtures. I doubt it'll happen.

I really don't get why there are any people at all who see this as a positive thing because it basicly means that even less deals can be found since people will be selling their stuff at gamestop.
Potentially anyways but seeing as how they are a pretty big brand name you can be pretty sure that there will be even less deals than in the past.

From what I've seen, it's a relatively small number of people who actually bring old games into their stores as far as people who "don't know what they have", often times those people assume old games aren't relevant anymore. The rest (meaning most who will bring in games), are aware of the value of their stuff. Nobody who is really aware of this is going to turn loose of gems for a small amount of store credit there unless they're trade happy and just don't care, which granted some people are.
But, it's a good thing only in the sense that eBay shouldn't be the only force in the market that dictates value, particularly because a lot of shady crap goes on there and values become inflated due to sellers simply deciding to see if they can charge more, and desperate gamers end up paying it. GameStop already acts as a container of outrageous value on some modern games that start taking off. In some cases they keep the price down from eBay sellers going wild with something like Devil's Third, Xenoblade, Calling, just to name a few. Small print releases would be absolutely gouged on eBay, if it weren't for a store like GS. Because we've seen time and time again, scalpers buy and stick them up 3x the price on day one.
-
I'm not too concerned about the mom & pop shops or people not putting stuff up in yard sales. Places like Half Price Books already take retro-current games in our area, though it's possible less people know about that in general. I know my bf sends people down the street to them when they bring in their old stuff to GameStop.
But I agree that there's just a wealth of hate about GS. The thing is, people still bring in their trades. If GS couldn't get away with the prices they give out, they wouldn't be doing it. I know many, if not all, of us don't go to GS to trade in our games. But hey, people do, and some of us are able to get a good deal out of it in the end :D
If anything, I'll be sad that I'll probably no longer get a couple of the freebies that come through when folks used to try to sell back old stuff and didn't want to bother with taking it back home when told that GS couldn't take it.

Your example is for new games. The xenoblade times were from when the games were released and bought up by scalpers wich also happens in the current day and age with potentially rare sought after releases. However Were talking about old games not games that could potentially be reprinted shortly after release. i have heard that there were some games wich were later on printed again after a few years but this is a really bad example because were talking about the older games.
For new games I really don't care Why should I? but for retrogames there will be less deals out there in the US market. As far as retrogame prices go i'm pretty sure the prices will be just as high and probably allot higher than market value.
As far as deals go. Say that a seller trades in a panzer dragoon saga for say 5 $. Proably allot more but what if. That's one less chance for someone who actually wanted to add the game for cheap in the collection. I am pretty certain that many of such deals (probably less expensive )will be taken thanks to the big brand name game stop. Not all but I'm pretty sure that a solid chunk might dissappear. I've seen people trade in 300 - 500 euro games for 1- 5 $ in my country it's insanity it will definitely kill some deals even today.

I would almost bet that there isn't a single PDS out there than isn't in the hands of a collector, or someone who is aware of it's status. Too few of them were ever printed. At this point, it's worth giving up those dreams of discovering a huge gem because it's mostly all been found by now. Finding great deals on uncommon games is a thing of the past, a thing that happened before game collecting became a huge hobby over the past 5 years.
Really, unless the market starts to calm down I wouldn't recommend anyone get into this thinking it's feasible to build a big game collection, or even a modest one. I'm just really against eBay being the sole determiner of the market. It's a bad system to rely on, a system that doesn't take into account what anyone else who owns a store, or who goes to a convention are selling their copies for. Instead we allow eBay to set the precedent by merely citing asking prices, and follow it like gospel. We simply need more players in the market that hold clout.

Are you joking with me what a complete BS are you speaking off :o. Panzer dragoon only in the hand of collectors? and howcome I managed to snagg one for free just a bit over 1 year ago? The european version is only slightly less valuable than a US one very sought after.
Finding deals a thing of the past in what world are you living, I've managed to snagg many deals even this very week. A 200+ 300 euro cib gameboy game for free and I've added many uncommon good games for free to the collection. And the week before that I managed to get zelda's adventure 2 times for only 7,50 to 20 pop a piece a game that easily fetches over 200 $ and usually way more. I pretty much always make deals every week. Even now I have a cheap ps1 lot incoming with 2 uncommon ps1 games for free or a bargain price. 2 games that usually go for 30 - 60 euro's a piece.
I'm glad that I'm not living in your world where there are apparently no deals to be found while I make them almost weekly multiple times :P
Gamestop will potentially take many great deals away, I am pretty certain of that, fortunately in my country our big gamestops aren't that popular for the mainstream people and are actually doing pretty bad financially, might be gone within the following years I hope ::). Mixed feelings about the smaller ones since I've managed to snagg many uncommon good games for 5 euro's or less.

^ Not to butt in or anything, but some places don't have too many deals locally. But PDS is probably not the best example to use for finding a steal of a deal; I'd say that quite a bit of uncommon stuff can be found for good deals if you look hard enough.
It also depends on if you live in a city or have lots of stores near you, or if you find other people ( either online or locally) who are selling stuff.
I'm not too happy about GS jumping right in since buying retro is a crapshoot due to no way to determine condition, most stores don't have any retro stock, and the trade values can range from pretty okish on the cheaper stuff to pretty bad ( $27.50 for Earthbound for trade cred, $22 for cash). I'd only buy if they'd actually change some of their approach, but I doubt that will happen with how badly run the company is now.

online deals can be made wherever you live unless you have a really bad internet connection but than again such people aren't on these kind of forums anyways.
Your local deals aren't always the best far from it, at least in my experience when buying some deals. Your also making your chances pretty limited if you only try to get local deals. Local deals are awesome and there is a nice advantage at that but otherwise your missing out on allot.

That's very true; a combination of both methods is the best way to go. Sure, it can be tedious sometimes, but just like other things in this hobby, sometimes you gotta invest time in order to score big.
-
The whole thing is a joke. I just looked some stuff up. Get this: They take Fear Effect 2, but not the first game. They take SW: Rogue Squadron III, but not SW: Rogue Squadron II. They don't have Virtua Racing listed. Earthbound is given like $25 credit, but sells for over $200.
Way to screw things up, GameStop.

It's called the US of A, and it's not a treasure-trove unless you are theflea. In the USA, PDS is probably the smallest print game for the Saturn, a console that is so uncommon, you rarely ever see even the top selling games. PS1 and N64 outsold Saturn like 10 to 1 here. I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen Virtua Cop while game hunting over eight years. In that time of game hunting, supply has sharply declined on every front. But, I don't much care at this point.

In europe It might be even worse the print run of the sega saturn console is terrible in europe. There are barely any sega saturn deals in europe let alone nice condition games. It's already pretty nice to see a lose console let alone cib with nice games.
In europe the sega saturn is also a pretty rare console, as for sale figures I have no precise indication but it can't be good since I'm pretty sure it might be even worse than 10 to 1 if I look at the current market and the offers for european sega saturn games and consoles here in europe.
As far as hunting games in the wild goes It's pathetic, sega didn't do as well in europe as they did in the US.

I look at it like this. If a person trades in some ridiculously rare game to Gamestop, chances that the game was going to get on the market otherwise is pretty slim. Most people that own and play games are not collectors and as such, they havent considered the fact that the items they have are worth untold amounts to other people. Gamestop is the most well known game store for non collectors.

Yes exactly and allot of those people just sell it on for example craigslist for a cheap ass deal because they want to get rid of it. At least that's how I get allot of my deals.
Chances of those game getting on the market are actually really high if there was not such a place as gamestop it might have been sold for a pretty small amount when one is lucky or at least a really nice deal.
Again like i said in my country our biggest game stores aren't well known, the retro supply is pretty limited on those brand named stores thanks to that.

Except that to the people trading in games at gamestop, even posting on Craigslist is considered too much effort. These people want to spend the least amount of effort possible to get money into their pocket, and schlepping the box of games over to the gamestop in the mall as a small detour during your regular shopping excursions is so much easier than to take the time to write up an ad, waiting for someone to contact them, talking with them, and setting up a meeting. It doesn't matter to them that they got less money, all that matters is that they've got the item out of their hair and their wallet's now a bit fatter.

Holy crap…
In a post I made earlier in this discussion, I stated without knowing but just guessing what I thought there trade in price for EarthBound and Pocky and Rocky would be… I guessed 40 dollars, the actual amount they'd give you is 44 dollars for both lol
I know those thieving bastards all too well

Actually, you'd only get the 22 dollars if you're a Game Stop Pro Member. A regular shmuck would get the exact value I estimated, 20 dollars for each.

Game Stop is the devil.

Is there another gaming retail store so well known for dumpstering inventory if they can't sell it? Or pulling games from cases to toss the cases to make room? As shown, they are already ripping off the trade in value on well known valuable games. My fear is once this all fails they will have a stockpile of retro games that are just tossed into dumpsters yet again making rare games even rarer. I would love to see a list of what all GS has destroyed over the years. Scratch that, I would hate to see that list.

i wish they'd get their shit together tho and, for disc-based old games, demand the original case, art and booklets.
SOME of their retro prices could potentially crash the used ebay market altogether, which is good, but there's always that fear of buying from them online that they're going to give you a generic case, no book, no art and some scratched up piece of garbage.
EDIT: NVM THEY RAISED A LOT OF THE RETRO GAME PRICES TO MATCH THE MARKET DISREGARD THE PRICE COMMENT GOOD FUCKIN JOB GAMESTOP YOU COULDA DONE SOMETHING HELPFUL BUT NAHHHHHHHH

Haha, well, this was expected. They did this to all their pre-owned items starting a number of years ago... I remember the good ol' days when they kept price dropping older games but never actually went back and raised them. I got some awesome deals for $5 back then. Then Xenoblade Chronicles happened and others... :'(
