Which franchise do you like best :D
For me its really close but I think Mega Man.

I've never been a particularly big fan of either Metroid or Castlevania. The only Mega Man games I really like are the early X games and the Legends games.

Castlevania. Love me some Castlevania. Mind you I've only played the start of Super Metroid and Metroid Prime so yeah. But I think I'd still prefer Castlevania either way. I love the whole aesthetic and the music and the campiness and the awesome new gameplay mechanics in each game and mmm-mm.
Not a big fan of Mega Man personally.
Can't WAIT for Bloodstained.

Mega Man is definitely my favorite of those three. The only Metroid games I really enjoy are Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission.

That's a tough one, Mega Man for me.

Gotta go with Castlevania. The soundtrack and graphics/art design beat out the others, concerning my personal taste.
I've wanted to like Metroid, but it just doesn't have that same epic quality that other sci-fi movies/etc. have.

Mega Man, no question.
With Castlevania, the only games I really enjoy are the Metroid-vania style ones. Which is interesting because I could never get into the Metroid series.

Series in order top to bottom.
Megaman - OG, 2D Megaman or Megaman X. I want to beat bosses and get power ups. None of this free-roaming or Legends type of stuff.
Castlevania - OG, 2D vampire slaying. Let me whip the shit out of the undead. No need to whip in 3 dimensions. 8 ways was plenty. I really fell off after bloodlines. I need to play Symphony of the Night.
Metroid -OG, 2D lonely exploration. I just want to kill Mother Brain and get off this planet! The Prime games sucked ass. Metroid isn't 1st person. Pfft.
That's how I feel about the series. With that said, Super Metroid is the best game.

Castlevania for me the classic 2D and the rpg's titles.
Metroid is way inferior to the castlevania series. In my opinion the rpg titles should just be called castlevania games and not metroidvania since the differences are really notable. Same genre but it's way to different for my taste. Still great games though.
2nd place goes to mega man.

Since I was born in the late eighties, I was raised playing Mega Man. I would only play Castlevania later on PS1. I do not have interest in Metroid series.

In the following order: Mega Man was part of my childhood well at least the first five titles, purchased the last one a couple of years ago and now that I remember haven't finished it yet, Metroid because I love Samus Aran in that zero suit, nah am kidding but seriously I started to love the franchise since the release of the Super Metroid, the music of this game still gets on my nerves and Castlevania at last place and not only in this list, at any list, only own the three cartridges from the NES because a friend insisted that much that I needed to have the trilogy, I really don't give a crap about this series ;D

Castlevania for me although my favorite game of all 3 of the franchises is Super Metroid - what a perfect game.

I'll break ranks here. This is how they stack up for me in order.
Metriod Prime, Super Metriod, Zero Mission, Castlevania Symphony of the Night (PSP), Castlevania 2, Castlevania 3, Castlevania 1, Mega Man III, Mega Man II, Mega Man I.
Yeah, I'm weird.

Update. The best metriodvania platformer is missing from the options.
As of this post I have to say it's Shantae. :)
But Super Metriod and Zero Mission are very close.
What I like about Shantae is they weren't afraid to change up controls and abilities completely each game. Same formula, but unique mechanics each game not just slightly tweaked mechanics.
Also they've done a great job of making the adventure much less lonely than the other franchises through some very entertaining non-playable characters.
Lastly each game is deliberately telling a story with a much longer arc than any one game can contain.
The Shantae sequels feel like they exist because there is more story to be told, not simply more money to be milked.
I can't believe I waited so long to play this game.
And for all the good I've said about Shantae, Ori and the Blind Forest is every bit as good!
The classics at last have some very worthy current gen competition!

I'm replaying Pirate's Curse right now. Dang it's a good game
