I'm a Final Fantasy noob as I've only played XIII, XIV, and XV. So far, I am loving the cast of XV compared to XIII.

Sephiroth and Cloud are always some good fun, though a lot of that is simply their designs and ridiculous swords. Not sure if I particularly have a favorite since I haven't played enough FF games thoroughly. It's mostly just FF7, FF10, and FF15. Most of it's just design wise, such as Lulu and Auron from FFX

But man, there's just so much to hate about him lol I've actually been curious if he's as obnoxious or less obnoxious in Japanese. Did they put in the Japanese dub into the remaster for dual audio options?

Please bear with me those of you ever read this list be warned this list may or may not be a long list that have both of my most favorite characters of heroes/heroines & villains of both male & female characters of my most favorite characters of each Final Fantasy including my favorite summons & as a side note i proudly admit it I'm a Final Fantasy fan/huge fan even though I'm 28 years old in December 28th I'll be 29.
If you think I'm too old/If you think I'm getting too old for being a Final Fantasy fan/huge fan at my age i fully understand anyway here are my lists from male-to female-heroes/heroines-to villains-to summons enjoy :).
Male characters
Final Fantasy: Gilgamesh
Final Fantasy II: Guy
Final Fantasy V advance: hero-Bartz & Galuf & Gilgamesh & villains-Exdeath
Final Fantasy VII series: hero-mostly Cloud,Zack & Cid & villains-i have to say Sephiroth
Final Fantasy VIII: hero-Squall & Zell & Villains- i have to say Seifer
Final Fantasy X:hero-Tidus,wakka,kimari & Auron & villains- Jecht himself
Final Fantasy X-2: i guess i just say it depends on how you look at it
Final Fantasy XII: hero-mostly Vaan & Basch & Villains-Vayne
Final Fantasy XIII: i guess i just say it depends on how you look at it
Final Fantasy XIII-2: Noel
Final Fantasy XIII Lightning returns: i guess i just say it depends on how you look at it
Female characters
Final Fantasy:depends on how you look at it & depends on what jobs i want to use
Final Fantasy II:hero-Maria,Princess Sarah
Final Fantasy V Advance:hero-Faris Scherwiz,Krile & Lenna
Final Fantasy VII: hero-mstly i would say Tifa,Yuffie & I might as well & include Aeris/Aerith
Final Fantasy VIII:hero:mostly Quistis Trepe herself & Edea
Final Fantasy X: hero-Lulu,Yuna & Rikku
Final Fantasy X-2: hero-i might as well and confess i would say Yuna,Rikku & Paine and before you ask i love all three of them equally so don't ask me who do i love more
Final Fantasy XII: hero-Fran & i might as well & include Ashe herself
Final Fantasy XIII:hero-Lightning,Fang & Vanille
Final Fantasy XIII-2:hero-Lightning & Serah yep i proudly say the farron sisters are 2 of my many favorite characters in gaming,anime & manga

Final Fantasy Tactics:hero-Cloud,Oralndu aka Thunder Cid,Delita,Ramaza & Mustadio & Villians-depends since this game is a lot of fun
Dissidia Final Fantasy: depends on how you look at it since this game is a lot of fun

But in all serious, I do think Tidus is a really good character, and I will always defend him. I totally agree that he's annoying, whiny, entitled and selfish, but that's what makes him interesting and flawed! Unlike, Squall, Cloud or Lightning, he's a "fish out of water" character, meaning he's thrust into a new situation and is forced to make changes to his personality and goals. As he matures through the game, he reestablishes his priorites and becomes invested in defeating Sin. He has to face his own past and his own personal challenges in that whole process (if you've played the game, you know what I'm talking about, haha).
I don't mean to gush, but I really don't know that many games that purposely make an unlikable main character for the purposes of story and character development. It honestly made me think "Does every protagonist have to be likable and cool?" It's incredibly unique and interesting and that's why I love it.
EDIT: I will also say that James Arnold Taylor was pretty new at voicing video games when he did FFX, and I think gets better as he does more stuff. He went on to voice most of the Ratchet and Clank games and was phenomenal in those.

I know you could make a long list of your favorite Final Fantasy characters like i have but however in response to what you just said i like to say is i completely agree with you when you said there are so many great characters in the series

I've always really liked Tifa (not for her over exaggerated appearance...)
I was one of the few people when Final Fantasy VII was new, and friends would be talking about the game as we progressed, was surprised people cared about Aerith over Tifa. Cloud and Tifa's story captures my heart more than the other characters.
