Title: Grouping of same title releases
Post by: nullifidian on February 05, 2017, 12:57:32 pm
I don't know if this has been suggested yet, but it would be nice to have grouping of same title releases. What I mean by that is take for example the game The Lion King (1994). There are many different versions of it, and it would be nice if all of those were grouped together in a unified and clear way so that when you search the Lion king, the first result would be the grouping of the Lion King (unless you're typing a specific barcode or whatever). If you're familiar with discogs.com for example, they use master entries that hold all of the different variations of an album. Something similar would help negate the clutter of all of the different versions (and duplicates) of videogames.

I don't know discogs.com so i don't really know how it works but that basically how Gamefaqs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/snes/588444-the-lion-king/data) or Mobygames (http://www.mobygames.com/game/snes/lion-king/release-info) works no ? A main page for every game (and for each system or not) and then all version and variants could be accessed from there, it could be a good system, a great way to finally eradicate all those duplicate and we would have a much clearer database but even though i don't know anything about creating a website or that database i think it would require a lot of work, we would have to check every game on the database and then adding those informations and the link on the new pages (and i don't even think about the space since we would have a new page for at least every game that exist). I have mixed feelings about this... like i said that could really be a good thing but is all the work behind this is really worth it ?  :-\

Yes, basically a hub-like page for all variants of a game.
Here's an example of a master release on discogs: https://www.discogs.com/Perturbator-Dangerous-Days/master/699016 (https://www.discogs.com/Perturbator-Dangerous-Days/master/699016)
Also a screenshot because I believe you need an account now to view items on discogs:

And a screenshot of how the search function works:

The top search result is the master entry that links to all other variants.

And yeah, adding and maintaining accurate and clear information is always going to be a chore, but as you can see discogs.com does it well and has a thriving community that maintains this information. I see no reason why this couldn't be the case for vgcollect's community. :)

Yes, being able to assign items as child/parent has been suggested already.

PS: I am glad that video games are not as complicated as music releases.

Hi nullifidian,

Thank you very much for the feedback. We are definitely keeping this in mind as a possible option. I'm looking into the logistics of doing this, but it would definitely take a lot of work to switch over. It may be worth it in the long run, though.

Thanks,

Jason

Better to switch sooner than later I reckon. As more data gets added everyday, it'll be an even bigger chore later on :P

Also tripredacus, music releases aren't all that complicated. It may appear a bit intimidating but they're pretty simple once you get the hang of it. It also helps that they have a clear summary of submission rules :)

Would be amazing if we could get it to work. Ideally, folks could choose the parent record as a default but specifically designate a child to display if they prefer. The goal of the site is to catalog all variants, so I think it's important for users to still be able to display which variant they own.

I agree. We definitely have to keep this in mind when considering this.
