With the recent Yakuza 1-4 reprints I find it more and more frustrating that some companies (Sega especially) have been reprinting games that didn't sell well in the first place, and are in part only now hard to find and expensive because of their low print numbers. It just feels less satisfying to have it when a game you hunted for and found becomes common.
I've seen a lot of people happy for reprints but its mostly people who don't have the game to begin with, how, as collectors, how do you folks feel on the subject of reprints, I for one think all it does is devalue the brand, and honestly just make it much less likely I'll consider buying games from company "X" in the future if I know they're always gonna be easy to find.
-
I don't collect to say "Oh, my collection is worth this much" or to say "I have these games that were in really low print numbers". I collect because I want to play these games, or I think they are going to be so bad it'll be funny. So Yakuza 2, for instance, I wouldn't otherwise play this game because it was too expensive, but now that I can get it for under half what the going rate was, I don't mind and I can give it a chance. Same thing happened with Class of Heroes 2G.
Fun thing about LRG for instance is that their deal with the developers/IP owners is that they "license" the title for the single print run and then the license reverts back to the IP owner. So all of these LRG games that have been released could be re-released by the IP owner, most games it's not likely, but it could happen.
The only time reprints bother me are when Gamestop does reprints, because they sell them as pre-owned so they can sell the games at what the going rate is (Xenoblade chronicles, calling, cave story 3d, etc.)
-
I go both ways about it. If it's something that I shelled out a bunch of money for, then yeah, I'll be a little salty if it gets reprinted and the value goes down. I try not to spend *too* much money on something for that reason and, you never know, you might stumble across that item for cheap out in the wild or with a good trade. Same kind of feeling happens when I buy something at launch, anticipating that it'll be hard to find, and then see that it's marked down dramatically 6 months later.
I think it's a gamble in the world of collecting if you're interested in the monetary value of your collection.
Personally, I was thankful about the Yakuza reprints since Yakuza 0 was the first game in the series that I'd ever tried (and I enjoyed it immensely), and I'm grateful for the chance to own the other titles at retail-level prices.
Additionally, I'm always a fan of physical games. They recently put Harvest Moon 64 on Virtual Console, which is awesome!, but since I prefer collecting physical games, I still wish they'd reprint that cart (obviously won't happen).

I agree. That's BS. At least VGP sells them sealed and new and without the guise of "pre-owned" when the item is actually new and unsealed.
-
I strongly disagree; I think " new" reprints give people a better chance of discovering games that they may have missed out on for the first time.
Of course its great in collecting when you have games that are valuable, but some of the ridiculous prices for even recent games can have the opposite effect and turn people off from hunting them down altogether.
-
A buddy of mine sold his Ocarina of Time 3D to another friend for $20ish right before Majora's Mask 3D was announced, scummy other friend sold it to another friend for $90ish, and then Nintendo pushed out the metric ton of reprints and the price crashed back down.

ehhh I struggle with it a lot, I know not everyone is into emulation but with todays technology you can virtually play anything pre sega saturn with 0 issues or next to 0 issues. It is especially annoying trying to find the original only to find a slew of reprints. Example, mini nes, lots of ebay sellers are listing it as original nintendo so if you are looking for a boxed original nintendo you will find a load of mini nes.
Kinda on the same topic here but one of the reasons why we don't really collect original nintendo games. too many reprints/reproductions/switching pcb boards/etc. I'm not about to drop a few hundred on ducktales 2 only to find its a reproduction.

To clarify myself, I was just talking about official licensed reprints (VGP's reprints of Yakuza had proper licensing, etc.). With homemade repros, I feel differently about it...

I never really buy a game just because it has low print numbers or its "expensive," pretty much in the last decade I've just bought what I want to play, I guess I'm just a bit ahead of the curve in terms of when a game comes out that I want I buy it right away and don't wait years to find it used/cheap, etc. so I am glad when a game i bought 7-8+ years ago ends up being "worth" something.
Fuck Gamestop reprints though, just the worst company.

I agreed, even PS2/Gamecube/Xbox can be emulated with little to no problems, I'm much more in favor of digital re-releases instead of physical reprints, then both parties get what the want. Yeah the recent advent of NES and SNES "fakes" have completely turned me off NES/SNES collecting.

If it's being made to make an expensive or rare game more available to the masses, and the company is upfront about it being reprints, then hell yeah. I'm all for that.
But if it's people being shady and trying to pass them off as real, obviously that sucks. And unfortunately, eBay is littered with these kind of reprints. Especially on GBA. It's to the point where even common, cheap GBA games are being pirated and sold as if they were original copies. And to make matters worse, because it's so common on GBA, even people that don't realize they own a bootleg copy are selling them (unknowingly) as original copies.

That's the scariest part to me. I want to collect more CIB GBA games, but it's so hard to know if the cart is a repro that the owner pieced together unknowingly.
-
I personally do not care if the game gets reprinted so long as its the original owner that's responsible for the printing. as it stand it is their property to do with how they see fit. If I created something and the demand rose enough to justify a new printing of it I would do it without another thought. it just allows more people to have the chance to enjoy it and will significantly cut down on any bootleg copies/pirates/reproductions making the markets safer.
-
I collect games because I want to collect games, not because I want a valuable collection. So, I'm not upset if the value of some of my games drop, as is has no affect on how complete my collection is.
That being said, I do tend to avoid Player's Choice/Greatest Hits when I can simply because they stick out like a sore thumb on my shelves, but if that's what I wind up with, eh.
-
I buy most of my games for dirt cheap at yard sales/thrift stores so no reprints dropping the price of the game doesn't bother me. I am sure it would though if I payed close to retail on games.
-
With new games I don't mind reprints. I don't really care about new games.
But if they are going to do reprints for older games, personally it kinda kills collectors and were not talking about value.
Just imagine if they would reprint sega saturn of dreamcast games or maybe snes and sega megadrive games.
I don't know what I would think about that. reprints of older games are not a good thing in my opinion. you could easily get the games online or you could emulate it for the original console. it feels kinda cheap if you would reprint a game that is 10 - 20 or even 30+ years old. Let's keep it with the everdrive etc, It's the same experience why do we need more cheap shelfwear?
As far as collecting goes reprints kinda kills it even if you do not take value into consideration. that's just my opinion. I think collecting will be less fun if there are many reprints and all the games are super easy to come by.
Just imagine if you could easily buy all the mega man and castlevania games cib, It's not special anymore also for the people that find deals. All the games will have the same value and are really easy to get why bother. Your not altering any gameplay, your only increasing shelfwear with 90% reprints.
As far as collecting goes reprints will make it allot less enjoyable, I guess a reprint is slightly better than an online dowload but It's just not as legit even though it is official. Reprints of games that are a few years old are ok, but of truly old games is not an ok in my book. A brand new panzer dragoon saga is just not the same as the legit old version.
I would rather see a market drop than massive reprints of all sought after games.
I think the reprints of the yakuza series is a bad start. your not gaining anything, the same amount of people will play the game with the difference of shelfwear. Let's be serious most people who buy it for 50 $ already have a online download It's just some shelfwear. reprints will not be a big help of increasing people that will actually play the game, emulators and everdrive carts do. Most games are also on newer compilations there is no reason to reprint an original game.
Definitely didn't lose money while entering this hobby the opposite but I have to admit that finding deals will be less satisfying. And having certain items that one has in the collection. Reprints are almost just as bad a reproductions in my opinion especially if there are no difference like with the yakuza games. Reprints in the past had many differences and were only a few years old but 10 years is really to much.
That saying of a collector who only collects games that he wants to play not rarity and value.
i'm pretty sure that many would love to see brand new snes and megadrive games and I'm pretty sure there is a chance that those days will come, but than again in my opinion as a serious collector that's pretty disturbing and collecting in general will be less fun.
On truly serious note I think that only wii ps2 and xbox will see exact replica reprints and that for older consoles the chances of those reprints are less likely to actually happen but there is a small chance.
Maybe gamecube because there is allot of hype.

I really don't care for digital downloads of console games. There's too much uncertainty for me about whether I'd be able to have access to that game 10, 15, 20 years down the line. Games get removed from stores and servers for many reasons, and [the usual rant about preference of physical over digital]. If Yakuza 2 was available for $50 as a digital download, there was very little chance that I'd actually buy it. Even at $10, it'd be unlikely unless I was really anxious to have it for some reason.
Anyway, older games mostly likely won't be reprinted. VGP has stated that PS2 games are actually still being made, which is how they can help bring these reprints to life.
-
I absolutely don't care about the value or the rarity of my collection so I don't mind if some of my rarest games get a reprint, on the contrary i would be pretty happy if some of my friends that are still searching for a good deal on games like Skies of Arcadia can finally get it cheap and enjoy that excellent game.

I meant 50 dollars for the reprint of the yakuza series. These reprints cost 50 $ if I am not mistaken it's not super cheap.
Online dowloads for older games are always cheaper. You can get most retro games for between 5 to 10 $ online for a console. Pretty much all expensive games such as suikoen II etc. and ofcourse having free acces to emulation wich cost nothing at all.
The only download codes wich remain in retail prices are those of very new recent games.
Also regarding spotting fake american gba games, You can easily check the cardridge if you look inside at the bottom for a nintendo logo and the imprinting.
Also if your going the cib box road the manuals of repro's are a mess instead of the high quality originals.

I have nothing, but great things to say about reprints since they allow others to obtain a game that was otherwise discontinued or received an initial print too small to meet demand. Like some other people have said, I do not think of my collection as a monetary investment that I actively try and increase the value like it is some sort of stock. Every game I own is there because I'm interested in it, and it always irritates me when there is a specific game I really want but due to rarity I either have to get extremely lucky and find it for cheap or cough up more money than I want to to get it. Even if I do happen to have a particularly rare game, it doesn't make me feel good that many others are in a position where they are faced with the same choices. Just reprint, kill the resale market and allow gamer to play your game. That is what they were made for.
-
I think reprints are wonderful. As a gamer, you want people to enjoy games just as much as you do. Unfortunately, not everyone is willing to spend the same amount on certain titles. Even if one person -REALLY- want to play something, they may not have the ability to do it.
I use this game as an example a lot, but Panzer Dragoon Saga is an amazing experience. I really wish more people would be able to play it. If they were to make a reprint of that, it would make me insanely happy. It's kind of the way I felt with Suikoden II. When it was announced that the game was going to on PSN, I was overjoyed. It means more people can experience it.
Regarding the Yakuza series, it's always been something I've had an interest in. Yakuza through Yakuza 4 arrived in the mail on Friday and I'm glad I'm now another person that can experience the series.

Good lord, while VGP is reprinting Sega games, lets get VGP to get Sega/Atlus to reprint Rule of Rose.

So they had the license, but were unable to build the game to be printed?

So they had the license, but were unable to build the game to be printed?
I assume they weren't able to secure licensing for a reprint? I don't know anything about publishing games, so I imagine there are like licenses for a million things. Voices, music, etc.

That's a damn shame. Rule of Rose has lots of messy areas, but I still think fans of horror games should try it.

I know I'd love to. But it's gonna be one of those get it rare or wait for a work bonus or something.
