Title: How should I store Gameboy games?
Post by: typhusions on February 27, 2017, 10:53:34 pm
I am trying to collect all of the Gameboy games that were released in North America

I am wondering what would be the best way to store them
The only ones I have heard about so far is
-Binders (Don't want to do this)
-Boxes (Not this either)
-Nail Polish Stands (This is what I am considering)

I want my games to be on display without having to open binders or look through boxes. I just want to go up and look at the collection. Maybe grab a game to play.

DIY bookcases or built into the wall work well for those games

Original Game Boy has around 500 games (I think) so to display them all with nail polish stands would require maybe a large shallow book case? Or even a long shelf with all the stands across the shelf. I've tried the binder way, but it got old after awhile. You could just stack them alphabetically and vertically in columns so you know what stack to look through to find the game you want.

I don't think this is the first time this topic has come up.  And I'll post my solution once again...

Does this work for non cib games

... Uh... yes?

You take a loose cart and put it into a cassette case.  Then you print out cover art for the cassette case, as I did.  Finally, you display all of your games in a cassette holder, as I did.

In case you are asking something else, no, manuals will not fit inside of cassette cases.  Neither will the boxes.

This also works for Atari Lynx games, as shown in the top right corner.  Will not work for Game Gear games, but I have my own alternative solution for that.

I never knew about the nail polish shelf. That is a cool thing and I will have to remember it. I know how the local game stores have their loose cart displays, in some wooden arrangement with a plexiglass cover. It wouldn't be too complicated to build if you could do it yourself. I do not have a huge amount of game boy games, but if that nail polish thing works for Game Gear I may try it out.

Currently, I keep all my loose portable cart games in a Jeff Gordon pencil case. :D

There's a storage bin I found at Harbor freight that I was using that worked perfectly with Gameboy games if I find the link I'll post it later but right now I got them in a BCW card box.

I use the binder method that was already mentioned. I find it easier to flip through and find the games I want, rather than it being in some random pile somewhere.

(Not my games, BTW, just used a random Google image.)

But the nail-polish shelf thing is a great idea! I hope I can come across one at Goodwill that doesn't have a heart or glitter or something on it, lol.

There is a YouTube video on that, any cartridge based games should work for it. As pong as they aren't to tiny like the gba.

My vote will always go to Customgamecases.com and the cases that shadowfox built specifically for GB/C/A games.

http://www.customgamecases.com/online-store/!/GB-GBC-GBA-Lynx/c/13271936/offset%3D0%26sort%3Dnormal

It will take some work on your end with printing covers but if you want to store games and manuals in a way that they wont get dusty or be exposed to the sun this is the best way barring having the original box IMO.

I've thought about these, but it's so hard to justify the price when I don't have many manuals.

I've been having this dilemma with NES games, do I just leave them loose on a shelf, or do I buy the CGC so I can print out art.  Money and not having the space for 200 CGC prevents me from going that route.

More info on the GB cassette box idea which I've always found to be very clever:

I use a spice rack for my portable games, as you can see here (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/9kjhgk0kvci3e97/20170228_114937.jpg?dl=0). This one is only holding about 130 games, but stacking games with uniform shapes on their backs I imagine 3 or even 2 could hold every GB game.

Right now I've been using these heavy duty plastic bins for my games but any loose ones I put in a standard Ultra Pro Soft Sleeve with a little piece of tape on the back. One day I'll have them out in the open and displayed.

For the record, I love this topic.  Here are two previous threads talking about it (with pics)
https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,4530.0.html (https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,4530.0.html),
https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,5977.msg86881.html#msg86881 (https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,5977.msg86881.html#msg86881).

Here is the 'My life in gaming' video showing the nail polish stands (for anyone who hasn't seen it) https://youtu.be/oreOa_rIUj0 (https://youtu.be/oreOa_rIUj0)

Here is how I store, but not necessarily display, my Gameboy games http://youtu.be/KfMzOcwLt8A?t=3m52s (http://youtu.be/KfMzOcwLt8A?t=3m52s)

Lastly, video game display and storage is a topic that I am so passionate about that I have created a short youtube series discussing it.

My next video will be focusing on Gameboy Advance cartridges, but the video after that is primarily about a new way to show off your Gameboy games!  I'm really excited to share it, but I can't promise a firm release schedule.  If you would like, here is a playlist for my series:  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtQ6VnXl2RChS4YsT1KSvIwu4iS-uVaCX (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtQ6VnXl2RChS4YsT1KSvIwu4iS-uVaCX)

you can't beat cib games if you want to display your games.

No matter what you do it isn't as impressive as the complete in box copies. Feeling the original boxes in your hands with cool art work.

Sure you could put some cases around them, if you feel it's good it's great, but in my opinion they are just a bunch of lose gameboy carts not worthy since they are without a box. instead they are inserted inside a fake plastic box wich many collectors use trying to fill the emptiness of the cib feeling.

you could put the cartridges seperately in a box on alphabetical order with some leaflets in between also to prevent from further damaging the boxes. lose gameboy carts are not worthy to display, maybe 10 of your favourite games but if you go for more it will take up allot of space.

Lose carts are not easy to display, you could put some fake boxes around them but to be fair you could do that even without owning them games. Just store them in those regular plastic gameboy clear cases to prevent damage. also takes up allot less space than custom boxes with artwork. If you have original boxes than you can display them nicely. I don't get why people try so hard to display lose gameboy carts. Allot of work for minimal results.

I use modified ds cases grom customgamecases.com, quality cover prints and secures the cartridge. Plus it makes my mintendo handheld section of my shelf look more uniform.

Hey, I appreciate that other people appreciate loose carts. I personally don't care for non-CIB games but also understand that it's very difficult to acquire CIB games sometimes, especially for older titles and systems. NES games are thankfully a little easier to look at when they're loose since their label allows you to identify them when they're stacked. However, you can't do that with Gameboy games. Putting them in GB cases is good for protection but does nothing for helping to identify them when you want to browse your collection.

How people want to decorate/design/store their collection is up to them - if they want to have a nice way of displaying these items, more power to them. And I don't think it's a "minimal result." Those cassette box redesigns of the original covers are pretty clever imo. Looking at a bunch of grey carts gets pretty boring.

I don't care for it since it will not make me want to pick up a game to play it. I am looking for ways to display it and make me wan tot grab a game and play it

This is the container I was talking about earlier remove the lid and it's very easy to thumb through the games
