Everyone remembers their very first RPG experience :D. Which iconic classic introduced the genre to you? For me it was Pokemon Yellow version :D.
-
Pokemon for me as well. My first console RPG was Final Fantasy X 8)
-
Pokemon Firered. :) then i think baten kaitos origins. :P
-
Pokemon Blue version for me, good times.
-
Dragon Warrior / Dragon Quest back on the NES. I rented it not knowing it was an RPG. I was so shocked and I instantly fell in love with it.
My first RPG that had modern story telling techniques (cut-scenes) was Final Fantasy VII followed immediately by Lunar Silver Star Story. Both incredible for the time period. Revolutionary for people like me that had been playing RPGs since the 8 bit days.

First proper RPG I'd say would be Super Mario RPG. Never really played any on the NES that I remember.
-
Everquest was the first for me. Although, I never really caught the RPG bug. The only game that I've played since that could remotely be considered an RPG would be the NTSC version of Choro Q HG 2.
-
I've played a huge amount of MMORPG when I was younger but the first proper RPG i've ever played is Dragon Age Inquisition
-
Final Fantasy Tactics was my first. Got it when I was 7 years old and if I'm remembering correctly, got pretty close to the end of the game.
-
The first RPG I've played was Little Ninja Brothers on NES, didn't know name of the genre since I was so young.
I've also played Secret of Mana at my neighbors house, watching though most of it.
The first two RPG I've completed as a kid (before Pokémon Blue version) was Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG on SNES.
-
If I remember correctly, Secret of Mana. On PC, Diablo. I don't actually remember playing Secret of Mana that well, but I'm pretty sure that was it. The one JRPG I really remember is Final Fantasy VII.
-
Breath of Fire was the first RPG I actually played from start to finish.
The first time I saw an RPG, it was at a sleep over. I was watching a friend play Final Fantasy II on the SNES. It was pretty incredible.
-
Pokemon Red is the first one I can honestly recall playing through.
I played Breath of Fire 2 and Mario RPG in my youth, but I barely recall them, may have just been screwing around on someone else's save data.
-
I don't remember if I got NES Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy first.
My DW was one of those free copies Nintendo was giving away with Nintendo Power subscriptions, and I eventually finished it.
Believe me, I TRIED to get into FF but I could never get past the Earth Cave no matter how much I grinded. That game made me swear off FF games...until I played my friend's FFIV (well, FFII on SNES) and fell in love with it.
-
Mine was Final Fantasy 8. Remains my favourite game to this day. :)
-
Before I even knew what an RPG was, that would have been Pokemon Red. I friend of mine was an early adopter of this game well before it exploded in popularity in the US. I was the third person at my middle school to get it, and became totally obsessed with it. I ended up 100%ing, including getting Mew.
However, while not technically the first RPG I ever played, I always seem to think of FF7 as my first RPG, mostly because I knew what the genre was at that time and a neighbor at the time really inspired me to want to get into the genre. This was around 2000, and I remember blowing through FF7, FF8, and FF9 within the span of around a year and a half.
-
Despite the fact that am old my first RPG was Final Fantasy VIII, always hated this kinda of titles but totally felt in love with everything this game has to offer ;)
-
Dragon Warrior on NES...I'm old.

Dragon Warrior on NES...I'm old.
Same except less old :P
Played it on an old NES at my daycare in the early 2000s and didn't understand what the hell was going on. I just wanted to walk to caves and shit but kept getting stopped by encounters
-
Pokemon fire red
-
Is Dragon Warrior the first JRPG? (As in style, I don't mean the first RPG from Japan.)
-
Final Fantasy Legend II for the original Game Boy. I remember 8-year old me always had a hell of a time with the Apollo boss fight (but his theme music was so good).
-
Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic on the Xbox. I never got too far into it but for the time being I really enjoyed it.
-
For me, it was Phantasy Star on the Master System.
When I was a kid, I couldn't read English and, as far as I know, it was the very first RPG launched in Portuguese language in any video game console. All thanks to the huge popularity that Sega had (and in a way still has) in Brazil.
-
Dragon Warrior for me too.

Same for me, except I didn't like it. It actually turned me away from the genre for many years.
-
Pokemon Firered was my first! ;D
-
Chalk another one up to Dragon Warrior. You always remember your first
-
I love pokemon and final fantasy but honestly think my first RPG was Breathe of Fire. And yet somehow I don't have them in my collection anymore I need to fix that.

For sure! I love that series.

Final Fantasy III (VI) on SNES. I was at a friend's house who had a SNES and had just bought FFVI. As soon as I gazed upon that amazing game, I was hooked. Sadly, I owned a Sega Genesis and had no money for a SNES. Luckily, my birthday was close, and I was able to have a birthday party. Combine all of that with side jobs, I was able to buy a SNES w/Zelda: A Link to the Past, and FFVI.
While saving money, I begged my mom to buy me Phantasy Star III for Sega that was in the bargain bin for $15. Not a great game, but got me by until I saved up the cash.
-
My first was Phantasy Star IV, borrowed it from a friend and played the living shit out of it. I think I even faked being sick to stay home and play it. That game opened my world to RPGs and I've never looked back.
-
I can't remember if I ever played an RPG on the NES, but I do remember playing Super Mario RPG on the SNES and loving it even though I had no clue what I was doing. The first RPG I played knowing full-well what an RPG was, though was Final Fantasy VII. After that RPGs have been a part of my diet.
-
1st RPG would have to go to Zelda II: The Adventures of Link or Breath of Fire
-
No clue. We're talking 30+ years ago and the ole memory ain't what it used to be. :o
I want to say Phantasy Star because I remember playing it in elementary school and getting into a fight with the only other kid who owned a SMS over loaned games (little bastard spit in my face and claimed I said something about his mom when a teacher intervened...I guess my memory isn't so dodgy after all :P). If it wasn't that then it was definitely The Legend of Zelda. One thing I DO remember is that I beat both games along with Zelda II. Nowadays I can't be arsed to even put 10 minutes into a game. ;)

Final Fantasy was my 1st rpg
