Title: Do you buy games you know you probably won't play?
Post by: empovyle on October 04, 2017, 10:42:20 pm
So here's something that I feel we could discuss (I'm not sure if there was already a topic like this). Since we're all collecting games here, do any of you ever purchase games that you know you probably won't ever get into and play? It could be because you don't have the time to play, you're tired of a genre, or something to that degree.

The past month, my SO and I have been binge-buying games, especially more modern titles for PS3 and 360. He liked to pick up any games he thought had interesting cover art, even if he's never heard of them. But really, we both doubt that either of us will ever play them, or, if we do, it won't be but for a few minutes to try it out. A lot of them were incredible deals at pawn shops, so it was hard to resist adding them to our collection. Some of the games that come to mind are Lair and Clive Barker's Jericho - not exactly shovelware, but not really games that come to mind as some of the most noteworthy games of the last generation. We've decided to slow down though, mostly because we're quickly running out of shelf space for all of them, but also because it does seem a bit wasteful to be buying things that are almost only there to look pretty.

I think a majority of us are guilty of this, especially some of us with massive collections - certainly you don't have time to play all of those games, right? How do you feel about this subject?

No, I only buy games I have interest in. Sometimes that leads to a not so great game, but in those rare cases I rid of it. I recall being more lenient with my collecting when I first started years ago, but I learned to focus on what I really wanted pretty quickly.

It's something I've wrestled with for years. Of course I never intentionally bought anything that I absolutely didn't want to play... but I have been guilty, in the past mostly, of picking up games that I've wanted myself to take interest in playing, or that I've told myself I need to have for the wrong reason. But there's a difference between interest in a game, and if I'd actually play it strangely enough. So yeah, I have my share of those titles I probably never should have picked up. Each year as scarcity and prices increase (and space decreases), I've become more discriminant in picking up games - at this point it has to be something I'm very sure about. I believe I'm still making a few mistakes here and there, but if I'm sure I won't play it, then no way. I consider that a significant waste of money in today's crazy expensive market.

Me?
I buy hundreds of games that I know I will never play... Haha!

All the time. Though with those games it's mainly because of the sake of completionism and/or because I find amusement in owning a copy of the game (namely Wii/DS titles that are either shovelware or aimed at little girls).

I do still want to eventually play all of them (save for the sports titles), but that mythical "someday" drifts further away as other newer titles enter my collection and real life responsibilities eat into my free time.

I had a reply but all of this applies to me.

Nope, I don't see the point. All the games I have are game that i've either finished or plan on beating at some point. I might have a few games from my childhood that I don't really care about but that's like 2% of my collection ^^

Yep! Sometimes quantity wins over quality. Now granted, most games that would fall into this category I probably got for dirt cheap. Part of the fun of this hobby is that everything is playable, but not all of it has to be played. Plus picking out a random game that I probably wouldn't play and giving it a whirl can lead to fun discoveries.

No. I only buy games I'm interested in and know I will play.

Nope. When I buy a game, it's because I'm going to play the hell out of it. I may stop prematurely if I'm not having fun, but I'll at least give it a fair shot.

I only buy games that I think I will play or that I love from when I was young but I end up having a huge back log because I buy way faster than I can play and I only get hooked on certain games and do completionist goals on games I like a lot so i'm slow from bouncing to a new game and don't give the others much time. :)   But every game I have I would play or want to play soon.

Yes and No.  I had and always have this idea that I'll start streaming playing some of the horrible games that I own... maybe to torture myself, maybe to rag on the game... not sure... but until I actually do that, it's basically a yes.

There are games I own that are on platforms I have little to no interest in playing. Not counting things I've since changed my mind on... But for example, the Transformers game on cassette for C64, I won't ever play. It just goes into my Transformers room on the media shelf.

Rarely- there's a couple criteria to hit first: It has to be cheap- REALLY cheap. Like, under 5 dollars cheap. Second, I have to have some reason to own it outside of regular play. Examples:

-I bought Battleborn for $4 on clearance at Target because I'm notably terrible at FPSes. I figured one that's largely dead might be a safer place to try and teach myself to play better.
-Similar logic behind a $1 copy of Farcry 3 at a yard sale, coupled with my fascination with the more recent Farcry games. The villains intrigue me.
-$1 Diablo 3 so my fiancé would shut up about how I should totally give Diablo 3 a try.
-And $1 for a copy of Babysitting Mama will doll, so I can force friends to play a game controlled by a giant plush baby. Also to see how my 3 year old niece would react to it. (she attempted to play for about 30 seconds before leaving the room with her new doll, nunchuk dragging along the floor.)

Sometimes it works out- I spent $3 on a copy of Enslaved: Journey to the West because, despite remembering poor reviews, I dig Journey to the West in general and was curious about the interpretation. I ended up with a game I really enjoyed- enough that I bought another $3 copy a few days later because it came with a mini-comic. Ended up playing that one all the way through, very worth 6 bucks. Terribly rushed ending, though.

Unless I am buying it with some sort of return policy in place, no. I have taken a chance on a few very rare games, mostly disk based, and have about a 50/50 success rate from them. Probably the biggest gamble I had was on a copy of Gotcha Force on the Gamecube I paid $20 for at a flea market (no return policy). I buffed the hell out of the game and it still would not play. I ended up selling it on Ebay "As is" for about $50 so I ended up making some money on it in the end.

Hell yes I do!  I do it all the time.  I have more games than a normal person should ever own.  It's probably unhealthy.

I collect games.  Some I play.  Some are just because I like having them.  I don't even have an XBox (I lost both of them in The Great Divorce of 2015), but I've been enjoying the heck out of buying the games lately.

I will say that I've at least turned on ever NES game that I have.  A few years ago, previous to the aforementioned Great Divorce of 2015, I made it a point to play and do a small review of every NES game.  I got through about the I's in making videos about them, but I played them all.  I even have a notebook with all my 2-3 line micro-reviews.  It was fun and it made me play games I never would have before.  I even found some real gems.

TL;DR Yes I buy games I never intend to play, and play Boulder Dash, Iron Tank, Double Dare, and Heavy Barrel on the NES

Interesting take. I've always wondered how many of my games games won't play that I don't know about. I've very rarely kept with the good practice of testing expensive purchases to make sure I didn't get ripped. I did it once after Too Many Games and what do you know, some guy sold me a crap copy of Panzer Dragoon. Eventually had it replaced.

My local game store says right on the receipt "NO REFUNDS ON VIDEO GAMES. NO EXCEPTIONS." It's like, what if the game doesn't work?

I bought a copy of Death and Return of Superman at a con one time.  Got home and, I'll be damned if wasn't a Super Punch-Out!! board on the inside.  I still haven't found a cheap copy of that game.

There are a few game stores like that in my area, but for the most part they are really cool about returns as long as they are done within a week of purchasing the game. I don't go to the flea market much anymore due to it being infested with overpriced resellers now, but back when I was there once a week I rarely bought anything over $10 because I had no idea if it would work.

If I read your story the disc was in bad condition with allot of scratches potentially deep ones since buffing didn't help, It's pretty easy to determine when a game will fully work or not.

Only light scratches can guarantee it to work fully without buffing. If the discs is full of them or some medium deep scratches than yes you can have a risk with discs.

Furthermore usually games with bad condition discs have bad condition packaging so is there any reason to buy these at all? Unless it is way underpriced for a rare game.

The first copy of Panzer Dragoon I got looked nice, disc was near flawless, but it didn't boot at all. No idea why, but the next one I got worked fine.

Well overbuffing can result in a gamedisc being defective defenitely a risk however at least where I'm coming from I can tell if that's the case.

Buffing machines aren't perfect.

usually these days proffesional refurbishes do not recommend to get a disc perfect scratcheless since buffing it slightly gives the best result and obviously to prevent from overbuffing near the data layer.

Buffing to perfection is not a good thing it seems, have seen it at plenty buffing places making them chances over the years while in the past they always wanted to make the disks scratch free.

I pretty much never buff but i have noticed these chances at allot of places at least in my country.

Or maybe disc rot.

When I see games that are underpriced or on sale for a limited time I buy them so I have cheap stuff to trade with friends and I resell stuff on Marktplaats, a Dutch website like EBay.
It's a nice way to expand my collection while keeping the costs a little bit down.

When I was single yes, purchased and still own some titles at my collection that some of my friends told me that for some or another reason I should need to have at my collection, now that am married with two little girls I do took my time to read or saw some reviews about those titles that take my attention even ask at the forum for some opinions and at this point am pretty satisfied with the latest additions  ;)

At this point I'm doing that by default, I only buy games that I would want to play almost exclusively, but the sheer volume of them now means that some of them are never going to get played. As a bargain hunter, if the opportunity to buys games comes up, I go for it, anything unwanted becomes trade-ins towards something better. On a few occasions I have bought games which I can't physically play due to lacking the system and don't intend to buy the system in the future, but those occasions are very rare (a complete Castlevania for the NES for instance, or a beat em up for the CDi for instance).

I keep spring-cleaning the collection and trading towards more interesting stuff, hopefully the 52 game challenge will help me actually get through more of them.

I will only buy games that interest me. I don't have the finances nor am I hardcore enough of a collector to actually pay for games that I'm never going to play. Similar to shfan, even though every game in my collection interests me, some of them get left to the backburner for a very long time thanks to the deluge of new games coming out these days.

I have to say yes. I have a wall of PS4 titles that sometimes I look at and be like "why did this game get a physical release?" Im the anti "dude bro" gamer so all those sports/racing/fps style of games on my wall are definitely not in my want to play list and lately a lot of the newer consoles have a giant percentage of them as released titles.

In a way yes, i only buy games that i know i want to play but sadly i also know that i already have too many games and too little time to play them all, so some of them will probably never be played (tested at least, to see if they works, but not played, and i don't even consider games that doesn't work, like some pc games i have on Steam).

Racing is a genre I've been thinking a lot of about trying to get back into, it seems to be a rather niche market now - I don't think they're very popular at all. I want to get some more racing titles for my PS4 collection. ...and thank the lord for all of those titles getting a physical release that "didn't need one". All games need a physical release.

You'll burn yourself out in a few months. And either sell the whole thing or keep a few.

I'm primarily a gamer, so no. I only buy games when I believe they will be much fun or interesting to play.
Only exception: The Fallout Anthology for PC. Played FO3 and FONV on PC before I bought the Anthology. Probably will never use one of the Discs, but they came in a f*ckin' Mini-Nuke!

You'll burn yourself out in a few months. And either sell the whole thing or keep a few.

For many collectors it seems that numbers look nice on the shelves. I for one would think the opposite If I would add games that are not fun to play wich in turn would not look pretty on the shelves with only a few games here and there wich are interesting.

Maybe for cib nes games but even than I would say no. Neo geo yea sure since all those games are good.

As far as playing all games goes, If you have decent collection you will not be able to play them all period. Just focus on a few at a time, Rushing thing and playing them games for a short time is not to much fun if you would like my opinion.

I don't mind it to much never playing certain games in the collection, my costs are none anyways. If I would spend full prices on expensive games and had allot of money invested in it while never playing allot of games than yes I would most definitely think twice before adding certain games. I would have a significant smaller collection only adding games wich I would play allot and in way less quantities.

I do, though I always tell myself I'll get around to them. While I always buy stuff I would/want to play, the main problem is my backlog is just too big, so I'm perpetually 'behind' on stuff. Online games like Destiny and FFXIV tend to add to that backlog, since I'm not actively progressing through the stack lol

Still, I keep buying, and I don't really sell anything unless it's something I just flat out didn't like, or wound up with multiple copies of.

So here's something that I feel we could discuss (I'm not sure if there was already a topic like this). Since we're all collecting games here, do any of you ever purchase games that you know you probably won't ever get into and play? It could be because you don't have the time to play, you're tired of a genre, or something to that degree.

exactly my opinion, i'd rather have 500 games that I love than having to go trough 2000 games only to find only a few that i like

I got off on a bit of a tangent the other day, but here is my direct response to the question.

I don't really collect anymore, at least at the level I did prior to six months ago, but whenever I bought games to add to the collection it was always with the intent of playing them eventually. Even if that meant 10+ years down the road. I was not the kind of collector that just filled my collection with any game I could get my hands on for cheap for the sake of bolstering my collection numbers. Every game had a purpose and still does.

With that said, many of the games I have sold out of my collection have been ones that I probably would not have touched for a very long time, or games that I did end up playing and for one reason or another felt that I probably would never play them again. Some of these games were games that were worth a fair amount and their value was not enough to  inspire me to hold onto them anymore given their quality.

I'd rather have the 2000 games to sort through because I never know if a game I wouldn't normally play is going to be a hidden gem. Some have been as horrible as I expected, but others I wound up enjoying immensely. Best personal example for me is the Dynasty Warriors franchise, where I got Dynasty Warriors Gundam becasue it was dirt cheap, and now several years later, I've got 13 100% completions across the franchise.

You could also just do some research to look for games wich you are into, pretty easy to spot on the web. I do understand the so called suprise factor but than again if your going towards that route you will probably not get the games that you would truly like. Since they will be less likely to find for dirt cheap in most cases. For xbox 360 and ps3 this might be an exception.

Dynasty warriors is btw not really a franchise that I would consider a hidden gem. There are many dynasty warrior games especially on the ps2. If you like your hack n slash games you can't miss these and they are made by Koei with them many rpg's. The only reason why these games are so cheap is because they did sell well in the past and that they are uncommon at best thanks to that, therefore in plenty of quantities available

I mean it's not that hard to watch a video on youtube to see if you're at least a bit interested in the game. There's a difference between buying a game that you don't know but think you might like and buying a game that's clearly bad. It's still pointless to me to have 2000 and not know if you're at least interested in half of them, especially with how easy it is to look up a game nowadays.

I'm a sucker for limited release games and it has taken a few crappy games to convince me to stop buying them just because they'll be a rarer collector's item. I only have a collection of 301 games at this time and have slowed my purchasing considerably. So there's a larger chance of me to finally put a dent into my backlog. Lately I've been focused on my 3 month old, as well as studying for certifications. I've also put more time into PC gaming, though I'm trying to play my Vita/PS4 more.

All too often the niche games I want will end up going on sale for about $15, so it's better for me to wait.

I definitely have in the past but typically the game came with something. When I bought my PS4 used off ebay it came with a few games I have had absolutely no interest in. Another reason I will buy games that I won't play is because I am a greed, heartless, capitalistic, scum. Joking aside I will buy games because I think I can turn a profit! I have wasted sooooo much money doing this lol. Finally another reason I will buy a game is because it is simply so cheap! There will be a shit game going for 60$ on any mainstream store. Gamestop, walmart, target, ect. However there is some poor sole that for some reason bought this piece of trash and is looking to make ANY kind of money on it! I have never played Evolve but I got it barely used for 7$ such a steal!

Maybe if there's a reason it has any value to me. A licensed game of something I like, a poor installment of a franchise I enjoy..I can buy games for pretty stupid reasons but there's gotta be a reason at least

I usually end up with games I wouldn't normally choose for myself if I'm buying up a large bunch of games at once. I look at it as an opportunity to try something different should I feel so inclined, and if I try it out and don't like it, I usually pass it on. I don't do this very often, and usually the price has to be right, like less than $5/game.

99% of the time, the games I buy I intend to play them. The only real exception to this is when I impulse buy at a thrift store or something.
