@Marvelvscapcom2 made a topic last year about this time about your favorite console of each generation, but to make this topic different I decided to make a (lets Talk) about the 7th generation in which not many people talk about, what is your likes or dislikes about this generation 7 of console gaming. Some call it the last Gen.
The 7th generation mainstream consoles include the
Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii, and the PlayStation 3
I prefer the SONY PlayStation 3 when it comes to the Last Generation or 7th of console gaming. Coming in second I like the Xbox 360, I have my own Wii also but I never played it as of yet.
I only prefer the Wii when it comes to Wii sports. I had a ton of fun at family get together's playing the Wii in all of it's motion control glory. When it comes to multiplayer motion control games in your own living room the Wii is king. When It comes to casual gaming with yourself or others the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 was good also.
share your 7th generation console gaming stories here. or, this is also the place for anyone opinion or likes and dislikes about any or all consoles within this 7th generation of consoles :)

PS3 is definitely the top choice in that gen. Ni no Kuni alone is enough but with the entire God of War series available on that console, its no contest. The Wii isnt as bad as people make it out to be. Motion controls are not for everyone but they do make the games feel more interactive. I used to spend hours on Wii Sports and I would actually feel like I accomplished something when it was done.
-
And if the Wii is being considered the 7th gen, what is the Wii U? Cause the switch is supposed to be the current gen. Would that make the Wii U the only 7.5 gen console?

I have pondered this a lot. I guess it is technically gen 8, but then again so is the Switch I guess...I don't know!

It depends on whether or not you remember or forget the 6th generation Nintendo Gamecube, technically the Wii U was launched at the time of the other 8th generation consoles. and for a while competed against the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The Wii U was a failed console mostly, or was it considered it a handheld? I am not too sure ::)
the Nintendo Switch could be considered the first generation 9 console, but I can see where you are confused. since #1 not many people remember the Gamecube as being in the time of the PlayStation 2, Xbox and Sega Dreamcast. the Wii was one of the competitors against the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 from around the time the Wii was released
The Switch was an early generation 9 release in my opinion
-
Answering the origina question first, my favorite 7th gen console is, by far, the PS3.
Now, my thoughts about the discussion about video game generation.
I have pondered this a lot. I guess it is technically gen 8, but then again so is the Switch I guess...I don't know!
Well, I don't think that is a problem with a company having two or more systems in one specific generation, so classifying both the Wii U and Switch as being part of the 8th gen is not wrong in itself. As an example, Atari had the 2600 and the 5200 which are both part of the 2nd gen and Sega's SG-1000, SG-1000 II and Mark III (Master System) are usually all considered to be part of the the 3rd (even though I personally believe that the SG-1000 is much more similiar to the 2nd).
Particularly, I tend to think that one of the main characteristics of the 7th generation is being able to output video in HD, which the Wii isn't. So, based on this, and on how much the Wii's hardware is similar to that of the GameCube, I personally tend to think of it as being part of the 6th generation in the same fashion as it's older brother was. Thus, for me, the Wii U is actually Nintendo's first 7th gen console while the Switch is 8th.
However, as I've said, all this generation thing is VERY subjective and this classification may suffer a huge change sooner than later.

1. Xbox 360
2. PS3
3. Wii
Also the wii U is 8th gen Switch is the First Console of the 9th gen
-
PlayStation 3 wins by a large margin. I cherish my Wii U a lot as well, though.

It's a very early contender for the 9th generation, I'd think. Same as the Jaguar or Dreamcast were for theirs.
-
XBox 360 cleaned up that generation, as far as I'm concerned. It's like the PS2 of it's generation, due to the sheer number of games in its library, and how well the different genres are represented (except maybe JRPG, but it did get a few of those even). And it's very cheap and plentiful to collect for.
But if we were all being objective here, Wii is the clear-cut winner. Best selling system of all-time.

exactly why would anyone consider the switch to be 8th gen or worse the wii u 7 or 7,5 gen wich sounds pretty ridiculous.
The wii u alongside xbox one and ps4 are 8 gen while the switch is a brand new console after these generations 9 gen
the switch is the only 9 gen console while sony and microsoft have yet to release any 9 gen consoles except for some more powerfull upgrades.

The system I decided to buy was Xbox 360 which had a variety of software and HD remakes. Never played a PS3 but noticed the waiver of the monthly online fee. Looking back both systems had a similar library of games with a few exceptions; Ni no Kuni comes to mind. I plan to delve into the PS3 ten years down the line.
As for Nintendo Wii, initially I thought the motion controls were a grand gimmick so I decided to wait to buy it. As it turns out, digging through the shovelware, plenty of worthwhile software exists (besides first party) that look awesome.
-

My reasoning was always that Switch is Gen 9. Wii U was early Gen 8 but Nintendo always drops their console 1-2 years before Xbox and PS do. Maybe PS5 and One X will face Switch as the Gen 9 heavyweights or XB1 will make a new console platform entirely. Might take a while but I think switch should be thrown into next gen and One and PS4 is current gen. :).
As for the topic I always played Xbox 360 when I was gaming during the height of Gen 7 in my teen years. I loved 360 so much but I will admit it's a very unreliable console with design flaws. I still prefer it for racing and FPS games. I love the Forza games for racing fun and for first person shooters I always prefer Xbox's controller desgin.
But as a whole I'd say I love my PS3 most of gen 7 because PS2 is my favorite console of all time (so far) and PS3 ported so many of the best PS2 games over flawlessly in beautiful HD. Especially kingdom hearts and jak and daxter ect... I live for those ports :). Plus last of us was just icing on the cake. Last of us is truly one of my faves ever. :D.
Wii was the odd one out, it pushed motion controls too much imo. I wish it was optional but I do love at least 15 great games in it's library. It surprises me that it's the best selling of the 3 lol. It shows how powerful the whole 'healthy gaming" movement was.
-
I'd say it's pretty obvious what my console preferences are at a glance of my collection or at my signature.
As for why I preferred the 360, there were a few reasons.
First was the controller. It was a solid, comfortable controller that didn't cause hand cramps after using it for a while, unlike with the Dualshock and Wiimote. I honestly thought it was the pinnacle of controller design until the One came out and managed to make a great controller even better.
Next were the achievements. Having those goals for each game to obtain was something that really invigorated me to try to play each game to it's fullest. And they also had the bonuses of being a chronology of my gaming time as well as being ultimate proof of what I accomplished. Granted, the PS3 did come out with trophies after a while, but they've never really clicked with me as well as gamerscore did.
And then there was the online component. While Xbox Live did have a cost unlike PSN or WiiConnect, it really felt like a case of getting what you paid for. Matchmaking and other online modes were smoother and more reliable. Additionally, cheating was also not as prevalent as it was on the other systems, but whether that was because of the cost of the system, Microsoft's moderation team, or a little of both, I'm not fully sure. There were also good bonuses for having the service, like the Gold-exclusive sales and now Games for Gold, which will usually more than compensate for the small fee of the service.
As for the Wii, there were quite a few solid games that made it a good secondary companion to a 360/PS3. I'd say it's biggest problem wasn't the motion controls, but how there was no middle ground for them. The motion controls would either feel fantastic and natural or unresponsively frustrating; there wasn't really a middle ground. And when coupled with the idea that if a game is on Wii, it must have motion controls, most games fell to the lower end of that spectrum. It was pretty obvious which games had the motion controls tacked on and which ones took the time to properly integrate it into the game.
-
Xbox 360 and Wii won this generation. They provided unique experiences and moved gaming forward. I actually probably played my PS3 more than my Wii, but it didn't bring anything new to the field except for larger storage space.
I feel the same way about PS4 - a generic console that has a lot of good games. It even cracked me up when i saw they put a speaker on their controller. I felt like someone in their R&D department looked at what everyone else was doing and brought it over to Playstation. Achievements.... Uhh let's make Trophies. Wii motion controls... Let's make something with a big colored ball on it. Xbox camera..... Let's make a camera too. Wiimote has sounds... Us too. rumble controllers... We now have dualshock.
-
Definitely Xbox 360 for me.
During that generation I worked in game QA and tested solely on 360 and PS3 and I always found the PS3 cumbersome and sometimes downright annoying to operate. Only talking about the system here, not the games.
Both systems had amazing exclusives, but as a shmup lover the 360 was the superior system for me.
I never got into Wii, unfortunately.
This generation it's the exact opposite IMO, the Xbox One system is slow, buggy and cumbersome (only tried the first edition though) and the PS4 has the best library by far.
-
PS3 and Wii/WiiU.
I completely ignored the 360 due to all the hub bub regarding its high failure rates. Sony had a larger library of good exclusives and the multiplats were almost always better on the PS3.
That said the Xbox One Platform has been giving me an opportunity to go back and appreciate some of the 360’s offerings by way of backward compatability.
I’ve even gone so far as to pirchase the 360 versions of many of my PS3 games on the X1 so I can keep playing them without my PS3 hooked up.
I can clearly see the visual trade offs (tho the One X is crossing some of theat gap with enhancements). But I’m willing to pay that price to keep enjoying my games.

Xbox 360 > Wii > PS3
I was an early adopter of the 360 and it remained my mainstay for multi-platform releases. I got stung by the RROD a few times, but later models gave me no problem with reliability. Not needing to install games was a boon, the system also has a small but tasty selection of exclusives which cover a variety of action genres (the Rare games, Project Sylpheed, Ninja Blade, Earth Defense Force 2017, Bikini Zombie thing etc.)
The Wii, maligned as it is, has some great exclusives nonetheless, not least the Nintendo titles but also a raft of third-party gems. Motion controls = poo, but they only impact badly on a handful of titles.
The PS3 has several exclusives, sure, but they largely are a a clump of Double-A JRPGs and a few random others, in addition to an irritating installation requirement, easily the weakest of the bunch for me. Backwards compatible PS3 = win, but that's PS1 and PS2 titles, not the PS3 library.
-
I was pretty big on 360 for that generation. 360 controller is still one of my favorite controllers of all time. Still have my 360 mostly so I can play Guitar Hero and Rock Band once in awhile lol Didn't even get a PS3 till years later, like a year or two before the PS4 release, I forget exactly. The Wii was a dud for me mostly due to the motion controls. I ended up selling my launch day Wii to a friend within the first year as the tech and games weren't doing it for me. Kinda funny that I liked the Wii U more, despite it being a failure lol
-
Objectively... Wii > 360 > PS3
Subjectively... 360 > Wii > PS3
As someone who isn't entirely into JRPG games, the PS3 is obviously at a distinct disadvantage, the majority of their exclusives were geared towards that fanbase. To this day, I've never played a God of War game, I own them all, but I've never played one. It just goes into how unwilling I am to make time to play my PS3. Doesn't help that Sony caused so many problems with their systems and their systems had so many problems. Early 360's had high failure rates, but I didn't early adopt ANY console that generation... maybe the Wii. I bought my first PS3 solely because of the touted Other OS feature. At the time I was doing cyber security stuff in college, so Linux on PS3 was a cool thing to do. They took that away. I traded in my console for a slim. The ONE JRPG I tried to play had giant graphical flaws on that PS3. Bought an OG BC PS3, burned out after a few months. PS3 cost me so much money that generation. It deserves its place at the bottom of the list.
Every 360 I had, when it broke, broke within the warranty period. Microsoft and the store I bought them from, always fixed the issue quickly and without cost. I've gone through 2 or 3 360s, but it never cost me anything. My OG got replaced with a Slim Halo Reach, my Reach got replaced with a Gears of War Slim. Still have the GoW slim. The obvious choice of the generation in terms of multiplatform support. Most games performed much better on the 360 due to it having a relatively simple architecture, whereas the PS3 had the Cell architecture which made optimization and coding a pain in the ass. Case in point, look at any Bethesda Game. Buggy as fuck no matter what, but definitely performs worlds better on 360 over PS3.
Wii... with its... motion controls... was a casual gamer success... but it just didn't have the viability for long term support. Nobody wanted to continually play with motion controls. They kind of learned from this with the Wii U... but too little too late. Great games like Smash Bros, Super Mario Galaxy, Skyward Sword, etc. The system has so many first party titles that stand out and a bunch of third party titles from major franchises that also hold their own... but the system just reinforced that "Nintendo is for kids" stereotype. I'd argue that Nintendo had the best exclusives of this generation, at the downside of the worst third party and multiplatform titles of the generation... but if you tried to argue with me, I'd either give or ignore. Also, never once had a Wii break or fail.
-
When it was current, the Xbox 360 killed it. It was my favorite during that cycle.
Now days, the Wii is the only one of the three I drag back out. We play it on the garage door during the summer. It's still fun.
-
How do you guys play the Nintendo Wii these days? Standing up or sitting? for me?
I can't even play a games like one of the Call Of Duty games for the Wi. without getting a tired arms and stiff back. I've used the gun accessary playing Call of duty. and it was so uncomfortable, it was panful to stand or sit down, and impossible to aim. Since, both aiming, and turning is under motion controls.
In order to turn, in Call of Duty on the Wii you need to move the gun to the left or to the right all the while keeping steady. Most times you move you arms back and forth and up and down the game is only halfway responsive in my experience.
My dad however can play the Call Of Duty On the Wii. just fine and sitting down. what makes the motion controls so bad for me is how uncomfortable the Wii is to play. Am I alone, when it comes to laggy motion controls making you cramp up in pain? I envy anybody that can handle a First Person Shooter with motion controls, can anyone else handle a FPS on the Wii without feeling pain?
-
Some games were actually better playing while standing up, but in all honestly most games I used to play from the comfort of my couch.

Poor Ouya. So terrible nobody even remembers it.

Poor Ouya. So terrible nobody even remembers it.
I had to look that up, because I don't even remember it. Was that some kind of online digital only console? If so, I can see why it must have failed. :-\

Yep. First attempt (that I can recall) at a streaming only condole.

Yep. First attempt (that I can recall) at a streaming only condole.
Granted, the Ouya was an eighth-generation microconsole that was not exclusive to games being streamed in lieu of games being downloaded. However, later on, some games did utilize a cloud-based streaming service. It was a digital-only console, though.

Well, I'm sure the fools that wasted money on it do.

My interest in games was reignited with this generation after interest really dropped off around the mid 2000s. By the time I acquired an Xbox 360 and a Wii, there was already tons of games out for them and everything seemed so fresh and exciting, and then discovering the DS on top of that. It was a good time to be getting back into gaming. I still believe it was a superior gen compared to both the previous one, and the outgoing gen of today.

Favorite: PS3
I ended up getting a PS3 about a week after launch and that was only because I knew people. I missed the preorder window that was like... maybe an hour. I worked in Seattle at the time. Every day after launch I went to about 3-4 stores daily. Before the job I had during the preorder window, I worked at an EB Games and knew a few of the managers. I remember going in to a store 6 days after launch and a 360 fanboy was telling me that every PS3 game would also be on 360 so I may as well buy a 360. Had I not known.... had I been a casual gamer, I would have taken his idiotic word as truth cause he's the one working at the game store. Luckily, I've been a gamer probably since before he was born. I laughed at him and came back the next day. I saw the same moron was there and immediately left. I was going up an escalator and a friend of mine was coming down the escalator. Came to find out he was now the manager of that store and he had a PS3 in the store he wasn't supposed to sell till Black Friday, but he would sell it too me if I wanted it. I came back down to the store and bought it with Resistance and an extra controller. The moron behind the counter tried to interject that they weren't supposed to sell it but he couldn't cut off the manager's decision. It was fantastic.
My favorite series, Uncharted, was born on the PS3. I also loved the Infamous games, RE5, Tomb Raider (2013), Mass Effect 2 and 3, and tons of others. It was an incredible generation.
Neutral: X360
I didn't bother owning one but I had a few friends that had it. It was ok but didn't really have the games I wanted to play outside of third party releases that I could also play on PS3.
Loathe: Wii
Don't get me wrong, many Nintendo specific games still had a tinge of fun in them, but I found out with this system that I ABSOLUTELY HATE motion controls. I almost instantly regretted getting rid of my Gamecube. Luckily, my Wii could play Gamecube games so that's basically what it became. Skyward Sword was the nail in the coffin for me and it ruined me on Nintendo as a whole until the Switch advertising came out stating "Play how you want" and showed the Pro controller. After the Wii-U heavily advertised continued use of the Wii-motes, the system was DOA for me.

1. PS3
Sony consoles have been my goto consoles since the 6th gen for the most part and the PS3 was no exception. I definitely own and have played the most games for the PS3 out of all the gen 7 consoles, and in terms of exclusives it's pretty much unmatched for the gen.
2. Wii
The Wii has a metric ton of shovelware on it, however the excellent titles mixed in that shovelware as so high quality that they alone make this an amazing title. On top of that there were some super fun first party Nintendo games that I have a bunch of fond memories of playing.
3. 360
While the 360 is my least favorite of the 7th gen consoles, I still really, really like it and I feel like it was the lat XBOX console really worth owning. It's also the SHMUP console of choice for the 7th gen, especially when taking into account imports.

Wii was the first of the consoles that I bought from a co-worker of mines at the time that was selling it alongside a copy of Smash Bros. Brawl. I vividly remember getting this especially considering that this was the first gaming console I bought with my own money after getting my first job. Said co-worker was someone I got along with right away when I had arrived there. Not only that but because it had Gamecube compatibility, it allowed me to experience Gamecube games first hand since I was a PS2 owner in the previous generation and I had fun with it. I still have mines but in storage since I can use my Wii U for Wii games I havent gotten around to yet.
PS3 was the second one I bought and the my favorite of the 3. I bought mines via Ebay auction a few months after getting the Wii and best of all, it was the OG PS3 with PS2 support. I still remember doing a last minute sniping bid and winning it which felt so satisfying. Overall, I invested alot of time on it and my library is in the 100s but not as high as PS2. I've met awesome people through online who a few I still keep contact with and it was on overall great console. While I do have my OG PS3 from 2009, it has since stopped working atleast with the bluray drive. It works with CDs and DVDs but with Bluray media, it tends to lock up and I never tried to fix it. Instead I opted for Slim PS3 for a few years until I bought another OG PS3 and wound out giving my Slim PS3 and just because it was cheap, I bought a Super Slim from someone 2 years ago
Finally we have the Xbox 360 and I won't say its my least favorite but rather the least used if only because I bought mines way later for reasons I cant remember. That said, it is currently hooked up and I do have a number of games on disc and digitally. Most of what I have are multiplatform that supposedly run better but I do like the amount of digital games you cant find elsewhere in other digital platforms like Raystorm, Radiant Silvergun, Guardian Heroes, TMNT2(I got from a friend since it has since been delisted), UMK3(same as TMNT2) and few others. Alot of the big titles I have yet to play or I will but not on the 360 but on Xbox One since it is backwards compatible with a few games. Otherwise, it has gotten its use but not as much as the other two.

PlayStation 3
Having grown up with Sony platforms, and, as a young, casual gamer during the PlayStation 3's release, I soon later bought the system without knowing too much about it, including the new focus and direction that gaming as a whole was heading. I bought the system because I enjoyed the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 and had hopes that the PlayStation 3 would continue to meet that satisfaction. However, this generation began the heavy focus on online gaming and first-person shooters, which are an aspect and genre I particularly do not enjoy. In short, I was and still am disappointed in the PlayStation 3, as the overall lineup of title selections is lacking in terms of variety.
Wii
One year before the Wii U's release in 2011, I inherited a Wii. Having not ever owned a Nintendo console prior, I was able to experience a lot of high-quality titles from both the Wii and GameCube libraries. Personally, I generally enjoy the motion control aspects, especially those in first-party titles. And, of course, the debut of Miis and their collection of titles are still fun today. While there is a lot of shovelware, I don't necessarily think it's worse than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. While the Wii may not have had the high-quality support of AAA studios unlike Sony and Microsoft at the time, there are plenty of amazing albeit niche titles to experience.
Xbox 360
Not ever having been someone to game with Microsoft products, I have little to say about the Xbox 360 that hasn't already been mentioned with my opinions on the PlayStation 3. However, the notorious Red Ring of Death was an abysmal failure on Microsoft's behalf. If Microsoft wasn't the conglomerate it was and continues to exists as today, the Xbox line easily could have ended here.

It worth knowing that not all Nintendo Wii consoles actually play GameCube games, A relative of mine had this one Wii the clean GameCube Disc would not even detect. I would like to know exactly what Wii consoles do play GameCube games, mine is red and it has the GameCube Plugs and the memory card oirt but I never used it and I'm afraid to use it,
what I read earlier some Wii consoles do not read GameCube games, and I know this because I just said my dad owns a Wii that does not read GameCube game because I tired and I think it ejected the GameCube disc :(
Do I need a special update? or software to read gameCube games On the Wii?
My own Wii is red and it's have 4 GameCube Plugs and 2 memory card ports, will mine read the GameCube discs? or do I still need Special Software installed from the internet?

If it has the Gamecube controller and memory card plugs, you should be good to play the games as well. Pretty sure that those without those ports are the ones that won't play the discs either.
