Title: The General E3 2019 Discussion Thread
Post by: kamikazekeeg on May 19, 2019, 04:01:23 pm
We are coming up on E3 once again, a time of new game goodness, so figured we could talk about what we are excited to see shown off, possible wishlist items we'd like to have revealed, just whatever we'd like to talk about.

This is going to be a slightly odd E3 this year, as one of the big companies, Sony's, won't have their big showcase, being that they are readying for the PS5, but there is still a lot to look forward to.  I'll post up the known conferences right now and maybe some stuff I'm looking forward too...

https://www.ign.com/wikis/e3/E3_2019_Schedule:_Live_Streams_and_Press_Conferences

Microsoft - With no Sony, Microsoft is probably the biggest one to look at this year.  Not really for their 1st part offerings (Other than maybe Halo Infinite, I have not been an Xbox fan this gen at all), but like last year, they were doing great with showing off multi-platform games coming up, so like we could see whatever the new game Capcom has planned, stuff like that.  It's weird being excited for a Microsoft conference lol They could show off something for their new Xbox, but I'm not sure on that one yet.

Bethesda - After the horseshit they pulled with Fallout 76, I probably won't even watch it this year.  I know we'll get Doom Eternal gameplay, which will be great, I wouldn't be surprised if we see Starfield revealed, probably some other good stuff, but man I think they pushed away lot of their fanbase with Fallout 76 and they are gonna have to work extra hard to build things back up, because that was a disaster.

Devolver Digital - They always have their really silly, Adult Swim-esque, conference, and it'll be worth watching for that alone, but as a company, they are pretty fun with the smaller games they put out.  Would be nice to get a date for Metal Wolf Chaos XD so I can check out that goofy game.

Ubisoft - Ubisoft is Ubisoft, so not sure what to be interested in for this.  Maybe we see another Nintendo crossover, I know we aren't going to see anything on Skull & Bones, they could talk about the Splinter Cell game they hinted at, and there isn't much I'd personally be interested in with them.  Maybe they'll surprise me with something.

Square-Enix - This event is all about Final Fantasy 7.  Hopefully the reveal of Tifa, more gameplay, release date for the first part of the game, this is the excitement right here.  Hopefully there's other good stuff planned, but this is the only thing anyone is watching this for lol

Nintendo - I'm personally not very excited for it this year.  Normally I am, but the stuff likely to be shown off isn't personally something I'm not crazy about.  We'll probably get Animal Crossing reveal, which will probably just be what you expect out of Animal Crossing.  We'll get more on Pokemon, which will probably be what you expect out of Pokemon.  We'll see more on Link's Awakening, which will be nice even though I'm not a huge fan of the visuals.  I wouldn't be surprised if they announce Wind Waker and Twilight Princess for Switch, but thats not really big or important news.  We'll also get a Smash Bros character reveal guaranteed.  What I am excited for is Astral Chain and hopefully Bayonetta 3, making this event more about Platinum than it is Nintendo for me personally.

Since the PS4 is the only current-gen console I own and because I'm still very scepitical about the Final Fantasy VII remake (will it really be released in episodes or will we be able to have the full experience in one single release for a change!?), this is probably the E3 conference that I'm the least interested about in ages...
I think the only thing that could possibily catch my attention would be Nintendo announcing a new version of the Switch (which I don't believe will happen yet...).

Nintendo has stated that the show is all about "software", so I'm not expecting a new Switch.

I'm fine with FF7 Remake being in parts if it means it gets out quicker.  Like it being 20 to 30 hour chunks of game with more depth added into the experience and not taking however many more years it would take to come out is fine.  Mostly depends on the time between releases and cost.

Hell yeah! I look forward to E3 every year, it's like gamer Christmas lol. I go into every E3 with a ton of hype and high expectations. Many of those expectations are not met, however there are usually enough surprises and new info on other games where it doesn't matter that another year went by with no Half Life 3 announcement :p

But here are my thoughts, predictions and other things that I feel might happen at each of the big conferences this E3:

Microsoft - I feel fairly mixed about this conference. On one hand I am expecting MS to announce their successor to the XBONE with will a 100% digital/streaming platform. That's right, no discs or physical media. Unlike 2014 when they got a ton of backlash for their stance on no used games, I feel like a lot has changed in the industry since then, and I think as long as they present their console in the right way, more gamers will embrace it than shun it like what happened when the XBONE was announced. Other than that I can see them showing more about the new Halo, probably a new Fortza title, and some other titles that I can see being announced as exclusives on the new XBOX. I think we'll see some really good third party announcements on their stage as well, some I'm hoping for are more on Cyberpunk 2077 (hopefully with a third person perspective announced) and VtM Bloodlines 2. Other than that I'm pretty hyped for their conference, especially since last year was their best conference in years imo.

Bethesda - I think their main showcase game is going to be Doom Eternal, however I think that Starfield will make an appearance as a next gen title with a full on trailer (no gameplay though). I can also maybe see a sequel to Prey or Dishonored announced as well, and a very small chance we might get a new Wolfenstein announcement. My hype for their conference is fairly meh, but hopefully they'll surprise me.

Ubisoft - I'm not a big Ubisoft fan and never have been. Probably a new AC game will get announced, another cringe worthy announcement of the next Let's Dance game, and probably a new Far Cry game too. I really coudn't care less about what they show, but I'll watch it anyways just in case.

EA - This will be my least anticipated conference as it is almost every year. The only thing I am cautiously excited about is the new Dragon Age game, but if Bioware's track record over the last couple years is anything to go off of, and from the rumors I've heard about the upcoming Dragon Age title, I'll likely be in a worse place emotionally at the end of their conference than I was when it started. I hope I'm wrong, but I have no faith in the worst company in America.

Square-Enix - Currently FF7 Remake is my most hyped game and with the promise of more being shown off about it, I am very much so looking forward to Square's conference! I honestly don't care at this point what they do or don't share as long as I get more FF7 remake, with a release date too. I would also like to see FF8 get the remaster treatment that ff9 got a couple years ago. I can also see some sort of major DLC expansion for KH3 getting shown off too. Other than that I'm not sure what else to expect.

Nintendo - More than MS, this is my most hyped conference/direct of E3. I think Nintendo is going to unveil their new Switch model(s), which I personally believe will be a mini that you can dock, but the joycons are affixed to the console due to emphasis on mobile play. I can also see them announcing an upgraded model with a better screen and also more power as well. But either way I don't care much about that. What I am really excited about is I believe this will be the year they show off a lot of their teased franchises such as Bayonetta 3, the new Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem Three Houses, and Pokemon Sword and Shield. I can also see a new Splatoon announced since Nintendo said that they'd support Splatfests for Splatoon 2 for 2-years, with that mark coming up this summer, in fact I think Splatoon 3 will be their huge announcement this year. I can also see the next DLC fighter in Smash getting announced. I don't think that Metroid Prime 4 will get any mention since it's still in development. Aside from that, expect various third party announcements. I honestly think Nintendo will steal the show in 2019.

Sony - I know Sony isn't having conference this year and they will be absent from E3, but I think their next move will be based off what does or does not happen at E3. I think that the PS5 will almost certainly be announced in December at PSX, and I think if MS plays their hand and reveals their next console at E3 they will base a lot of their new console on the reaction from it. I don't believe the PS5 will be digital only like the new XBOX, but I do believe its emphasis on digital distribution will be based heavily on what happens with MS and their new console following E3. They will be sorely missed by me as they typically are my favorite conferences each year, but i think there will be more than enough to get excited about from the other big companies.

I don't think Xbox will bring up a digital only console, but they'll absolutely have the option for it.  They know they can't have another screw up like the Xbox One reveal, so they'll definitely promote a totally normal console, pushing more games, while bringing up the option for a digital only system with more storage for those that want it.  Digital only will happen, it makes absolute sense to do, but don't think we are there yet where consoles will make digital the default option.

Interested in the FF7 remake but really only care about DOOM: Eternal. Can't wait for that game!

Well, if they divide the game in like two or three (tops) physically released launches, I could consider it, but only if they don't cost full price (something like Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes).
Anyway, I'd never buy it until the Definitive Full- Experience Complete Version or some thing like that got a release.

Microsoft - On one hand I am expecting MS to announce their successor to the XBONE with will a 100% digital/streaming platform. That's right, no discs or physical media. Since I usually only buy Xbox consoles after they get discontinued, I haven't even got an XBone yet.
Because of that, I have no plans of purchasing the next Microsoft console anytime close to its release, so my opinion shouldn't care for the company, but if they decide to go all in with this digital/streaming stuff, it's sayonara bye-bye for me.

I'm curious in seeing which remaining Wii U titles will be gutted over and brought to the Switch next :^)

In all seriousness though, I would like to learn a little more about the new Pokemon game, and I'm hoping Nintendo puts some big announcement of an old franchise getting a new game or something.

Very interested to see that bethesda are still holding their E3 show after their year they've had, but the good news is that must mean they feel they have enough content to make it worth while... :) i can't see there being a Wolfenstein III announcement with the upcoming Co-op game.

Still very dissapointed that there is no PS4 Showcase, that is the one I would always go out of my way to watch. I would do the same with S-E, but after last years absymal showing, I just can't bare myself to do it.

Is THQ going to be there? Thats where my interest would be. Biomutant, Darksiders 4 and possible remake of Kingdoms of Amalur. **Edit** Guess they will : https://www.player.one/thq-nordic-teases-two-be-announced-titles-e3-2019-126376

I am interested in FFVII. Regardless if they change the fight style or not. Am I disappointed that its going to be in episodes? Yes. Will that stop me from playing? No.

Oh and DQ Builders 2 info will always be welcomed.

Think it's too early for Darksiders 4, but they are going to be there announcing something at E3 as they hinted at what seems like a Destroy All Humans return, and another franchise people are looking forward to, but I don't think it will be Amalur.

Great Thread! Nice to read up on what people are excited about.

I'm hoping CD Projekt drop a new trailer and gameplay for Cyberpunk 2077.

Me too, that's a huge game I'm excited for.  A shame we are still likely a year or two out from release at the least, but I'm glad they are taking their time.

I haven't gotten swept up in E3 hype since the late aughties, but I am really hoping to hear more from Square about the Final Fantasy VII remake.

I want to know more about the combat, whether or not these episodes are going to be a thing, etc.

Really only excited for Nintendo as usual.
-They have the Smash/Splatoon Invitational where I'm hopeful we'll see a Smash DLC character reveal.
-As for the Direct, I predict we'll see a lot of new gameplay/details for upcoming titles such as Pokemon Sword/Shield, Luigi's Mansion 3, Animal Crossing, Links Awakening HD, etc. and possibly more new game announcements.

-I would say I'm excited for possible news on Ghosts of Tsushima buuuut we won't be getting that anytime soon.

-Possibly a very miniscule chance of Bethesda showing new details on the new Elder Scrolls.

Well, they already have one with the XBox One S All-Digital (or XB1 SAD), so it may be a discussion point, but to launch a new console as all digital at E3?  That'll land with a dull thud.  The only way to remove the sting would be to have too models, but even then I bet the one with a drive would feel prohibitively expensive.

With Nintendo having done a Super Mario Maker 2 direct and soon a Pokemon one, I hope this means they are planning to push more new games coming up, like Bayonetta 3, now that they don't need to do info dumps on either of those games.  I'm still quite low on hype for their showing, but this perks me up a little more and hope they have some real good surprises.

Any guesses for possible new Smash Bros DLC? I may not play the game much, but I love kinda all the hype around the game, especially with the characters.  I feel at this point, with Nintendo and Microsoft being great with each other, I think Banjo-Kazooie have to be in.  I don't know if that happens at this event or down the road, but I want this to happen so much and it's the most likely its ever been.  I know they could also do something like Master Chief or Steve from Minecraft (Oh dear god no) for their more obvious and current popularity, but in terms of Nintendo history, and maybe a shift in better relations between Microsoft/Rare and Nintendo (I am desperately wanting Rare Replay on Switch), I think this needs to be.

Not sure who else would be good as generally I think the idea is that we'll primarily see most characters being from a Japanese company, so in terms of crossover potential with another franchise.   I want to see a Hunter from Monster Hunter like they did with Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.  Since that game is dead and Monster Hunter exists in Smash with the Rathalos, it makes a lot of sense to bring in a Hunter.  The moveset would be nuts and they could make numerous armor sets for the different versions.  Also Monster Hunter stage with rampaging monsters? That would be pretty dang cool.  Next to Banjo-Kazooie, this is my big pick.

We already getting info early about stuff we'll be seeing at E3 from certain companies.  We found out that Darksiders 4 was basically announced and will be shown off at E3, sounding like they are gonna maybe change up the gameplay quite abit as we likely get to play as Strife who could primarily be gunplay, so maybe less action hack and slash and more third person shooter RPG?  Either way, I'm hoping Darksiders 3 gets a sale this weekend so I can pick it up.

Dying Light 2 will be getting shown off at the Square Enix event now that they are publishing it and I'm pretty interested to see what new stuff they can bring to the game as the first one was pretty great with very well done developer support.

Signs seem to pointing to a Watch Dogs 3, which might be cool for some people (The first one wasn't good and didn't play the second).

Square-Enix also teased a new game from another outside dev called "Outriders", something scifi related (Lets hope that it's not another Quiet Man disaster).

Oh and I forgot, but for Square-Enix, they'll also have the reveal of the Avengers game they've been working on.  Add to that Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and I think Square-Enix and Microsoft are probably at the top of my must watch shows this year.

I really hope E3 deviates from their normal programming and actually talks about something other than sports titles, a new Star Wars game, another battle Royal Game, and a 5 year old Sims game.

So far Star Wars Fallen Order actually looks awesome despite taking place in Disney's canon, but I literally have zero interest in anything else they've scheduled to discuss. I am really hoping for a Dragon Age 4 teaser, an official title even. Something else unexpected would be nice too. Then again, this is EA we're talking about, the kings of industry rot.

You've got me excited about Dragon Age 4 now...that would be an excellent mic drop at the end of the presentation!

Fallen Order looks great...that's all I was hoping for from EA tbh.

EA Play 2019: D

I will start off by saying that if it weren't for Star Wars: Fallen Order this presentation would have got a huge F; the inclusion of the Star Wars game, which looks freakin awesome btw, is the only thing that made this thing worth watching. I just wish i had known that and turned the whole thing off after that game was shown off. We all knew EA would talk about their annual roster update sports titles, but the fact that the Sims 4 got a whole half hour designated to it tells me EA either has very little going on or more likely they are holding a lot back for next year in light of Sony and MS announcing new consoles soon, and releasing them in 2020. Sadly, I'm wondering if this is going to be the tone of E3 2019; publishers holding a lot back in order to reveal more for next gen. Regardless this was a crappy showcase, even crappy for EA whom usually has one of the worst if not the worst conference every E3.

Yeah I watched basically a short version of it afterwards and man, they knew what they were doing, front loading that conference with Star Wars and to a lesser degree, Apex, so people weren't sitting through the slog that is FIFA, Madden, and Sims.  Like it didn't seem to be cringey and I'm glad to get Star Wars stuff and a Battlefield V roadmap, but man this was a throwaway event.

I'm not sure if it was at E3, but I am so happy for THQNordic's remasters of Spongebob battle for bikini bottom and Destroy All Humans.  Such childhood nostalgia relived in 4K :)  It's going to be incredible.

Nintendo Direct killed it as well.  Pokemon Sword and Shield look like the classic purists have been begging for on switch.  :D

Due to a seemingly credible leak of the different retail versions for Cyberpunk 2077 to pre-order, there's a high probability that they'll be announcing a release date for the game.  My guess is early next year, but I'm incredibly excited for this game.

Also to note, the Microsoft conference is at 4pm EST today and could be the best one of the show.  Usually I like doing the separate threads for these shows, helps to keep discussions better organized, but I'm so tired from a convention yesterday, I think we'll just keep everything nestled into one thread this time lol

There's a high chance of a new hardware announcement for Xbox, lots of third party announcements, especially since Sony isn't there this year, and they said they have a ton of exclusives to announce, which could be good, and also could not...I mean when some of their exclusives were State of Decay 2, Crackdown 3, and the cancelled Scalebound, it's good to not get very excited about these ones all the time lol

I am incredibly excited, but also concerned about MS's conference today. On one hand I am expecting some crazy third party announcements, both on games that have been revealed like Cyberpunk 2077, but also on a lot of unannounced games that will make their world premier on their stage. One of these announcements will probably be the successor to the XBONE which I am still betting on being an all digital console with no place for physical media. The idea of this really sours my optimism for the future of gaming, however I could very well be wrong and they might continue to embrace physical media, but I see this as unlikely. Along with that I think they are going to come out swinging with a bunch of launch or near launch exclusives for the new system to get people excited. Overall it might be the best conference of E3, certainly the most interesting.

As for Bethesda I'm expecting very little from them this year. I think they'll spend 2/3 of their conference talking about the new Wolfenstein game and Doom Eternal. Doom Eternal is one of my most anticipated games and I'm very excited to see and hear more about it, including a release date. I do expect maybe one new game announcement, but it's anyone's guess what that will be. I do not expect anything new regarding Starfield or ES6, as I think Bethesda is gearing up to make these games their focus starting next year and beyond. I think overall Bethesda's conference will be okay, but nothing amazing.

Guarantee right now, no all digital system.  It'll be an OPTION, perhaps with a bigger SDD/HDD in it, but it'll optional for people who just want the game pass and no physical games.  As big as streaming and downloads are now, things still aren't in place for an all digital system right now, especially after we saw the Stadia full reveal and how insane it's data usage is going to be at the high end and how people weren't liking that as data caps is still a big problem right now for folks.

For Bethesda, I think that's pretty right on.   They'll probably have a new game or two, and I think they'll show off Starfield to some degree, because it's supposed to come out before ES6, meaning it's gotta be coming out within the next year or so.  I'm honestly pretty low on interest with Bethesda after they completely botched everything with Fallout 76 and how bullshit last years conference looks after the games reveal, but I'll still give it a careful watch.

*EDIT*
Oh yeah, Cyberpunk 2077 is out in April next year and Keanu Reeves is a character in it! Woo!

Guh, "Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot" is a real lame game name lol Hopefully the game is good, even if it's annoyingly rehashing the DBZ story again for the 100th time.

Actually kinda underwhelmed by Microsoft's show.  Not that it was bad at all, but I thought we were gonna get more big third party stuff announced...The only big reveals were Elden Ring (Which was leaked on Friday)...Oh geez, that was it wasn't it...Like getting dates and more for Cyberpunk 2077, Outer Worlds, and Ori was cool, but was a more basic show to me.  The biggest pop for me was Cyberpunk 2077 getting a release date with Keanu Reeves in the game and that was for a game I've known about for awhile now lol

Microsoft 2019 Conference: C

So that was...interesting. First off I really appreciate Microsoft showing off so many games at their conference, despite half of them being throw away, generic looking trash. As for everything else, it was mostly all stuff we were already aware of since last year, particularly the exclusives like Halo infinite and Gears 5. As for everything else, the new DBZ game looks meh, and Elden Ring has promise, but I really don't know what to think of it yet based off the trailer. The only highlight and the only time I genuinely was excited was during the Cyberpunk 2077 segment where we FINALLY got a release date! Now that we have a release date, I have a deadline window for when I need to build a new PC gaming rig ;)

And then let's talk about the elephant in the room, Project Scarlet. Beyond getting a bunch of buzzwords thrown at us and performance claims that have nothing to quantify the them, we know exactly what we knew prior to this conference; Microsoft is developing a new console. Considering they plan on releasing it in a year and a half, I'm assuming that it is 90% designed and I almost wonder if this is a game of chicken with Sony for them. Despite Kamikazekeeg's claim that it will have physical media, I'm thinking Microsoft wants to reveal this thing without it, but they're worried about 2013 repeating itself and the XBOX looking like the villain of gaming, while Sony looks like the hero. Essentially if Sony does physical media, which I'm pretty sure they will, MS will too. I am also betting that we'll actually see the PS5 console and know its specs before Project Scarlet gets its official unveiling too. Regardless, we know exactly what we knew prior to the conference about the XBONE successor, nothing really.

Not a great conference, but certainly not the worst either. I'm sure if you're an XBOX fan it had mostly what you wanted, but for others outside that group, the conference was okay at the very best.

Ori looks good
Psychonauts 2 is interesting to me
Tales of Arise looks Gorgeous (also it's probably the first time i can think of where a trilogy kept going backwards in time)
Cyberpunk 2077 holy shit Keanu Reeves

Literally nothing was said about the next xbox outside of a project name

As of writing this I'm listening to Rerez post conference and there was a rumor that miyamoto was supposed to show up... they just said the reporter who said that apparently mistook Keanu for miyamoto

Phantasy Star Online 2 is coming to the US on Xbox One.

It's also on PC.  I'll check it out, but personally not too excited for it as I have no history with the series and that this is originally a 7 year old Vita game, but maybe it'll be alright.

The audience made the Bethesda event miserable.  Normally I like it when the crowd is into the whole thing and it seems like genuine excitement, but dear god this audience.  I don't know if they were drunk or entirely bethesda employees or or just ridiculous fans, but they were cheering for damn near anything said.  It made everything feel way more manufactured and cynical than I'm sure a lot of these things are.

At least we got a possibly interesting game from Tango Gameworks with Ghostwire: Tokyo and that Deathloop game from Arkane Studios.  Doom release date was fine too.  Otherwise, boy, that was not a good time for me.

Bethesda's conference was boring.
I might check out Elder Scrolls Blade when it hits the switch
Ghostwire: Tokyo has me intrigued but it didn't see gameplay
Doom Eternal was the highlight of it all
Sadly I'm not excited about the Wolfenstein games
But it was a lot of mobile and just game updates

Overall for today so far
i agree with bikingjahuty giving microsoft a C
Bethesda: I'm going to be generous with a D-

Now for Devolver's mock conference with should at least be entertaining to watch

EDIT: Devolver's was good spoofed on Direct
Fall guys seem like it could be a fun time killer
Carrion looks fucking brutal and awesome
Not 100% sure if real or just them having fun but enter the gungeon house of the gundead a lightgun arcade game looks great
The messenger is getting tropical DLC FOR FREE
My Friend Pedro is so close to release I can't wait for that one
Overall B+ because that's what was needed

Devolver Digital was fun as usual.  Nothing much game wise that interested me except for The Messenger DLC.  Nothing on Metal Wolf Chaos XD was weird.

Overall, a pretty underwhelming day for E3 for me.  We mostly just got a bunch of release date info, which is always good, but there was not much hyping me up.  Tomorrow is primarily about Square-Enix as I'm not expecting much from Ubisoft or the PC game show, and then Nintendo on Tuesday.  Square is revealing Avengers, we'll get more stuff on Final Fantasy VII (Apparently the release date was leaked ahead of the FF7 concert they are doing right now, but I'll leave that out for now), and I'm sure we'll see a few more goodies.

*EDIT* Never mind, they confirmed March 3 2020 for the release of FF7R.  This is also likely for just the first part, not the full game, but the trailer was just a tease for tomorrow.

Bethesda's 2019 Conference: C-

Just as I predicted, Bethesda played it ultra safe and primarily talked about their main upcoming games, Doom Eternal and both Wolfenstein games, and some content for their existing games. The best was the pathetic attempt at reviving interest in Fallout 76 by adding content, including what else, a Battle Royal Mode *roles eyes heavily* and making the game free for a week. Someone please tell Bethesda that ship sank a while back. And of course there were the many mobile games they've shoved down people's throats every E3 for the past three years, with even more new, lame mobile games around the corner. While none of this stuff interested me, there is one game I really want to discuss; Doom Eternal.

I absolutely LOVED Doom 2016; I've played through the whole thing twice and can confidently say it's the best FPS I've ever played and is one of my favorite games of all time. I am completely serious. However, when Doom Eternal was first announced there was something about its gameplay and just overall feel that didn't quite feel or look like a Doom game. Those feelings were validated even more by the additional content they showed off at their conference tonight. I guess having a heaven setting is original for this series, however it just feels wildly out of place in this franchise. On top of that, all the platforming, acrobatics, and grappling hook gameplay was just sort of unnecessary imo. After all was said and done tonight, I actually wanted the game less and didn't really care that much that it was coming out the end of this year. It is possible that my feelings might change before it actually drops, but at the moment my hype has really cooled off, and I honestly could see myself waiting for a $30 or more price cut before purchasing this one.

My favorite part of the conference was the reveal of Ghostwire Tokyo. Even though we just got a trailer and there is currently no info on actual gameplay or anything else, the fact that Shinji Mikami is working on this gives me faith in its quality. I also really liked the concept and art style in the trailer too. I actually got pretty excited about this game, and it reminded me how much I miss when this would happen to me at E3s past. But for what it is I'll definitely anticipate more on this game!

One more thing I wanted to bring up was Bethesda making a deliberate point to show off their cloud streaming tech Orion. I don't think it's any accident they're mentioning this now, as they certainly have the scoop on Sony's and MS's new consoles and how they will deliver games. While I do see game streaming as being an option for these devices rather than their primary mode of playing games, I see this as where gaming is inevitably headed, especially since the tech is at the point where you can play a very hardware intensive game on a lightweight device like a phone or tablet. The game is running on an ultra powerful server in a datacenter so there is no need for your device to be as powerful, or even relatively close. This really puts a damper on my hope for the future of gaming and how involved I will be in that future.

So yeah, this conference left me in a worse place then it started, and if not for Ghostwire, Doom Eternal (I guess...), and Wolfenstein Youngblood this conference would have been terrible, but it was at least passable on those grounds, if only barely.

I was a bit underwhelmed with E3 today, but that was maybe because of the leaks beforehand. I felt I knew everything that was coming in the Microsoft conference.

The highlights for me so far, ranked with best at top:

Deathloop - I love Arkane so a new IP makes me happy
Elden Ring - Although the reveal was leaked, I am still excited for this
Cyberpunk + Keanu Reeves - That was a cool E3 moment
Tales of Arise - Looks very good
Ghostwire: Tokyo - Good trailer
Star Wars Fallen Order - Looks way better than I expected, still expect EA to ruin it somehow
Spiritfarer - I really liked the art style
12 Minutes - Looks okay

That's about it! Not great tbh.

I really expected a LOT more from Microsoft. I think they have missed an unbelievable opportunity to gain some ground over Sony heading into 2020.

It was a bit depressing to see their continual banging the drum for Game Pass. That is now an amazing deal, but I can't see more than a few of those games getting physical releases.

Final Fantasy VII Remake has a release date!:

The biggest let down for me this E3 is the lacking of any CAPCOM Presence... at all! The past few years have just been getting better and better, so I'm surprised to hear nothing from them.

I don't want to say Microsoft did good, but I went and immediately spent about $60 at the end of the conference to reup my gold and convert it to GPU, so they had to have done something right.

I'm mildly excited for a lot of things coming from Microsoft and hearing about how they found a way to use SSD tech as virtual memory really intrigues me.  Next gen sounds like it's going to be pretty amazing technology wise, but I'm with some speculators who don't understand how it's viable.  They can't charge $800 for a console.  It can't be cost effective to sell it for $400 or less.  Personally, my expectation is that they will expect to subsidize the cost of the systems by in a word forcing you to subscribe to their services.  A la, no disc drive, digital only and subscription based content.  Sony saying PS5 will be BC with PS4 doesn't necessarily imply that it will use PS4 discs, it could simply allow you to use your PS4 downloads.  I'm cautiously pessimistic about the whole thing.  I don't expect any real news before May 2020.

As for Bethesda, I went in expecting a lot of stuff about mobile games and MMO games, so I was bored through a lot of the conference.  They didn't really have much about Rage 2's DLC other than that one trailer.  I don't care about watching Doom Eternal stuff, I know it'll be good.  Ghostwire intrigued me, but it didn't really show anything about the gameplay, so cautiously pessimistic as well.  No interest in Deathloop, I actually zoned out during that part because it bored me so much.  Orion was intriguing to me.  If this is MS, Sony, and Google's broad answer to how they'll combat the US's not even top 10 worldwide ranking in internet infrastructure, this could be interesting.  Optimizing game engines for cloud streaming is kind of genius.  It sounds obvious when put so bluntly, but changing the way the game is rendered and the background stuff is processed such that you can either send things in compressed chunks or saving bandwidth by sending like data once with a set of instructions on what to do with the like data could potentially turn a 100MB downstream to a 10MB downstream.  The question still remains how input lag will be handled.  But as a developer I'm super curious about Orion.

Devolver was a hot mess as always... and they didn't even announce anything about Metal Wolf Chaos.

EDIT: Apparently both Sony and Microsoft confirmed disc drives for Scarlett and PS5.

Ubisoft's was okay, much like Microsoft, it all felt pretty well paced and while I wasn't really blown away by anything, I'll take a consistently alright show over a bad one and it at least was way better than Bethesda and that annoying ass audience.

Only thing that stood out at the show was Watchdogs Legion, with the London setting and being able to recruit all sorts of different people.  It's unfortunately placed between Final Fantasy 7 and Cyberpunk next year, so I won't be playing it lol

Square Enix is tonight and hoping for good stuff there.

Limited Run Games Conference 2019: A-

Funny enough, Limited Run Games might actually win E3 this years. Whether or not you want to count their conference considering it wasn't really a conference, or that they aren't one of the big players in the video game industry is fine, however their conference was good enough where I felt it mattered in the grand scheme of E3, especially this year which has been incredibly underwhelming so far.

So it's no surprise that LRG is just publishing physical copies of digital only titles and retro games on modern consoles, however what was surprising to me was the quality of those games they're planning on publishing over the next year. I was genuinely excited to see games like Corpse Killer, Turok 1 and 2 remastered, Red Faction, and all those classic Lucasarts Star Wars games get announced for physical release. LRG has really come a long way since I first heard of them back around 2016 when they were mostly publishing throw away indie titles. Now, they are getting seriously large IPs and allowing them to be purchased physically for modern audiences which definitely is a huge win in my book. Of course there is their business model that's still problematic, however I appreciate them leaving more games up for preorder rather than printing them in limited batches. The reason they didn't get a perfect score is because they still do publish quite a bit of mediocre crap, however there were enough great looking games, both ones I mentioned and several others that really have my attention!

And to top it off, a Shenmue III Limited Edition is being printed exclusively for them. I know there is some controversy around this given another Limited Edition is being distributed via the Kickstarter, which hasn't even been revealed yet as to what this will look like, however from the details of both it's clear that this is it's own separate thing. And being the huge Shenmue fan I am, I need this! I have been refreshing LRG's Twitter and their page all day trying to find details of when I can grab this. I am determined to get it, and I imagine it'll be one of the fastest selling items they've released to date. I will be ultra pissed if I miss it. But anyhow, this announcement only made me enjoy their conference even more, and it will be a tough act to follow given we're down to only two more conferences at the time of me writing this.

Ubisoft's 2019 Conference: C+

I will come right out and say I'm not a big fan of Ubisoft or their IPs, and I honestly only watched in hopes they'd show off more of Beyond Good and Evil 2. Sadly they did not deliver on this and I was forced to watch over an hour of gameplay and trailers for series I don't give two craps about. However, I am not so self centered that I can't appreciate that these games might appeal to others and there was enough there that I felt someone who did like these franchises and Ubisoft might have found their conference appealing. They seemed to buck the trend this year of big publishers holding a lot back in order to save more for when Sony and MS announce their new consoles, announcing some pretty big games that will presumably be coming out this generation. Given my lack of interest in Ubisoft that's about all I have to say on their conference. Luckily we have two of my most anticipated conferences left before E3 2019 comes to an end.

Square Enix was the best general event for me I feel.  Final Fantasy 7 Remake looks absolutely awesome and damn am I excited for it.  The gameplay in particular looks amazing.  Avengers also looks and sounds great, but they didn't show actual gameplay which was real annoying.  It's supposed to be playable at the event, which is crazy that they didn't show any proper gameplay.  They also announced a Final Fantasy 8 remaster which I'll check out, and I think Outriders could be cool.

Square-Enix 2019 Conference: A+

This is what E3 is all about; getting gamers hyped out of their minds for games they've been waiting a long time for, and getting them excited with new games that have never been revealed before. That is exactly, to a T, what Square did tonight! Holy hell, that was an amazing show! It was just this non-stop, rapid fire assault of amazing reveal after amazing reveal! The last time I remember getting this excited over an E3 conference was back in 2015 with Sony, where they shocked the word by finally revealing a release date for The Last Guardian, revealed FFVII Remake, and revealed Shenmue III, a game that many thought impossible to ever happen. In some ways Square's conference tonight was the fulfillment of part of that amazing 2015 conference where we now have gameplay and a release date for FFVII Remake, which is now officially my most anticipated game right now.

I fanboyed so hard during the FFVII segment of the conference, especially during the Tifa reveal. The game looks absolutely incredible and it's hard not to imagine having an impact on the JRPG landscape of today like it did back in 1997. While we do not have all the details, it seems as though Square has perfectly modernized the game while keeping it true to the original, all while enhancing it even more. The fact that this game is on two bluray discs too blows my freakin mind! I am so insanely hyped for this game right now I can't even!! Lol and that was just the first game.

This conference truly had something for everyone; whether it was DLC for other popular Square games, localized ports of classics we've wanted in the west for years, or brand new IPs and titles, there was just so, so, so much! I have to give them special recognition for giving FFVIII the remaster treatment too as it might be the most criminally underrated FF game of them all. Holy shit, I am so happy and excited right now for the next year of Square releases! This might be the end of this console generation, but Square is not going to let it go out quietly!

Nintendo is going to have to have an incredible show tomorrow, and I mean amazing in order to match that. Even if they don't I look forward to it. Even if they end up dropping the ball, it won't matter thinks to Square's 2019 E3 Conference :)

I was overall pretty underwhelmed by Nintendo's direct, but getting Banjo-Kazooie in Smash was joyous and wonderful and we got a tease for the Breath of the Wild sequel, so I'm very happy with that.  The show wasn't bad at all, it just personally didn't have a ton to excite me other than some more Astral Chain gameplay which looks cool.  I was tearing up with BK though just a bit, I was so happy lol I really hope we can see BK come back to Switch game wise.

Nintendo E3 Direct 2019: A+

Damn, I really have to give it to Nintendo in doing so much that I don't think anyone expected! The announcement of Banjo Kazooie in Smash immediately followed by Breath of the Wild 2 nearly killed me with excitement lol. I would have easily predicted Bayonetta 3 or Metroid Prime 4 well before a sequel to Breath of the Wild, although I'm pretty sure Bayonetta and maybe Metroid will actually be out before, but who knows. Aside from those two huge bombs, it was very nice to see so many games that were teased last year get release dates, many of which are coming a lot sooner than I thought. There were also a lot of other surprise games like a Panzer Dragoon remake which had me giddy as hell, as well as a new Contra. My only real complaint was about how short the Direct was, but despite this it did not lack in games or surprises. In the end Nintendo made me happy to be a Switch owner and I am incredibly excited for the next year of releases on it!

I know E3 is still upon us, but with all the conferences out of the way, and likely all the major titles announced I wanted to give my thoughts on E3 2019 as a whole as well as rank all the conferences from worst to best.

This was a very strange E3 in that there were a lot of bad conferences with a game or two that really made a huge impression. I truly believe the reason for this was because many of the big publishers are gearing up for next gen, which will likely kick off holiday season 2020. With the exception of Nintendo since the Switch is still pretty new and will see support for the next 3 or 4 years, all the other big publishers were obviously holding a lot back this year since their big, next gen projects will likely be revealed at next year's E3, and probably during the rest of the time leading up to next gen actually starting. As a result, there were a lot of underwhelming conferences, with most of the highlights being games getting release dates that have been hyped for years now. Despite this, there were still some stellar conferences, mainly from Square and Nintendo, and in many ways this was the best E3 since 2015.

Speaking of E3 2015, E3 2019 more than any other year felt like the fulfillment of that legendary E3 4-years ago. Many of the most insane revealed from 2015 like FFVII Remake and Shenmue 3 are finally getting released soon, and it felt like this year was the end of that chapter in gaming. In a way this makes me sad, however there will be a golden opportunity next year for all the publishers and devs at E3 2020 to pull out all the stops and give us amazing games to be hyped about for years and years, just like E3 2015 did.

As mentioned, most of the conferences were fairly forgettable aside from one or two major announcements within them. The only outright terrible conference was EAs this year, with Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order being the most noteworthy game shown off. Microsoft had a better conference, however it was mostly uneventful minus the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer and of course Keanu Reaves lol. Some might argue that the Project Scarlet teaser was noteworthy, however I'd disagree since it really only outlined the obvious that MS is working on a next gen console. Until we get actual specifics this news is about as meaningful if they never said anything at all about it. Bethesda's conference was also fairly underwhelming as they mostly showed off their two main games that are coming out, Doom Eternal and Wolfenstein Youngblood. Other than that we were showered with half an hour of failed Fallout 76 revival, mobile games, and ESO expansions. There was the reveal of Ghostwire which I'm excited about, but it did little to make the conference more than average at best. Ubisoft's conference was the definition of mediocre, but at least they have games on the horizon that some might really want. I watched the LRG and PC Game show, and both were actually pretty good! LRG definitely had the better showing off the two with some amazing titles that will get physical releases soon, but the PC Gaming show was no slouch either, with some very cool titles shown off, however a good mix of crap was also shown too. And then as if saving the best for last, Square-Enix and Nintendo both absolutely crushed E3 this year, by flooring us with so many great announcements and reveals it was hard to calm down during either presentation! While I think both presentations were outstanding and embodied what you'd want every E3 conference to be like, I'd have to pick Square as this year's winner; not only did they deliver on FFVII Remake and then some, they also revealed so many incredible looking titles that have me genuinely excited about their IPs again. It's been easily 15-years since I was last really into Final Fantasy, however FFVII Remake has me wondering if that game might once again revolutionize the JRPG genre once again just like it did in 1997. However, Nintendo is a very, very close second place, with Breath of the Wild 2, Banjo Kazooie in Smash, and many of their other games slated for 2019 and 2020 releases getting me ultra hyped! In summary of this enormous paragraph, here is my rank of all the E3 conferences/presentations this year.

1. Square Enix
2. Nintendo
3. Limited Run Games
4. PC Gaming Show
5. Ubisoft
6. Microsoft
7. Bethesda
8. EA

Sadly I wish Sony was included in this list as their conference is typically the one I get the most excited for every year, but even without them this was one of the best E3s I've ever seen! God, I am so excited about the next year of gaming, and I have reason to be even more excited beyond that with next generation dropping the end of 2020, and undoubtedly a ton of excellent games on the horizon for it. Now, excuse me while I drop a small fortune in preorders at Gamestop lol.

For me, the best were Nintendo, Square, and Microsoft, with Microsoft mostly just being for like one or two things as generally there wasn't a lot that interested me, but overall was a nice and consistent conference that didn't piss me off like Bethesda or bore me like Ubisoft.  This was probably one of the more lackluster years for me in general, even there is good stuff coming, as the biggest thing were release dates for stuff (Final Fantasy 7 in March, Cyberpunk in April).  Nintendo's definitely had the biggest pop from me as I went nuts over Banjo-Kazooie and the tease for Breath of the Wild 2 made me very happy as I wasn't super hype on Link's Awakening.

I'm so very glad this is happening too. I will probably still prefer the original but anything Panzer Dragoon in this day and age is great in my book.

Any info on whether it will be exclusive for the Switch? If it is, Sega will be forcing me to buy a Nintendo console (try saying this to me some 20 years ago)!
