Title: What TV/Netflix show are you currently watching? (Megathread)
Post by: marvelvscapcom2 on August 17, 2019, 02:51:23 pm
Hello everyone :)

I know I made a stranger things thread recently and I got hooked on another show and I didn't want to make any more of these Do you like this Tv show threads.  So I decided to make a megatread for all the shows.  Their are 2 other megathreads for Music and Movies.  So I thought TV and Netflix would be fitting too :).  Whenever you start a new show you like you can share it here.   :D

Right now I am so hooked on Orange is the New Black.

I know it is what is considered a "chick flick".  But I love this show so much lol.

It started by just watching it because I liked Piper Chapman (I think she's nice) but now I like all of the characters.  Or many of them anyway.  I hate a few.

Please try not to spoil too much because i'm early on.  As will be a universal rule of the thread. But I will say that Red is amazing and powerful.  And I like Pennsatucky even though she's crazy.  But she's pretty cool once the plot unravels.

So much drama interlaced in one season.  Let alone 7.  :D   I can't believe how much is ahead of me.

Anyone else love this show?   :)

Thank you for sharing any of your favorite shows past, present or future.

I watched Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus earlier and it was excellent!

I also recently watched Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling which wasn't as good but fine.

As for actual shows on Netflix I don't really watch much. I watched the first couple seasons of The Ranch but don't care for it anymore.

Mostly looking forward to the return of Eddie Murphy with Dolemite Is My Name on Netflix.

I hate the use of "chick flick" as a derogatory.  If something is good, it's good!  Regardless if it is made for kids, adults, men, women, etc...

That said, in the early seasons of Orange is the New Black there was nothing quite like it, or quite as good on TV.  It was phenomenal.  Like most shows it does have its ups and downs, but I feel like it managed to finish strong.  There are some characters that remain kind of bland and boring, and some that do shift and change over time.  Not a spoiler, because its personal opinion, but I hated Piper by the end, but that mostly came from a place that was because almost all of the other characters (except 1 or 2) were far more interesting.

I just finished watching the second season of Mindhunter.  While its still an exceptionally well made show, there is a turn halfway through the season that feels like it changes the what the entire show is about.  The focus and priorities shift, and while I know it is generally a true story and this did happen, the previous focus of the show is what I was far more interested in.

I used to have netflix but got rid of it because they took off a whole series movies I wanted to watch, and I got pissed because I wanted to watch them and they were gone earlier this year. The JAWS movie series. Other than that I was turned away by the selection. but a lot of series and shows and even movies offend me for religious reasons.

And I'm not much of a movie watcher this is the main reason why

I finally got to see the first season of What We Do in the Shadows since it showed up on Hulu.  It's based on the 2014 film of the same name (my favorite film of that year), which was written and directed by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).  The show is *almost* as good as the movie.  It's a little looser and a bit more broad, but I still watched it all in one sitting.

I agree :).  I'm still pretty late to the party which is awesome because I get to binge it all in one go.  It's always funner that way imo instead of waiting months for the next season.

I agree that even early on, Piper has already started to wear off in terms of complexity and her plot is getting a tad more bland.  I assume she'll pick up again in terms of depth because she's a main focal point but red seems to be taking over.

So far my top 10 favorite characters are

1. Piper (for now she's still my favorite.  It might be mostly because she's relatable personality wise but I also loved her plot line regarding Larry.  The other inmates are very hardened.  I'd definitely sit at the Yoga Lady and Pipers table lol)
2. Pennsatucky (Pennsatucky really is the most fun side character to watch. And she's very underrated. Her plot is great and she's funny.)
3. Poussey  (Poussey has a lot of depth and is my favorite of their group. She has loyalty. )
4. Fisher  (I love Fisher, I'm far enough to know key plot point regarding her but I won't spoil it.  But she is great)
5. Spanish Leader  (I forget her name, but she's smart and strong.)
6. Mr. Healey  (The only cop guy that I like, He has a good heart but personal problems make him mean at times)
7.  The New York Stalker girl.
8. The Blonde Heroine girl  (Forget her name too but she's cool)
9. Red  - (Red is a focal point character and she adds a tough element to the show.  But I didn't like her early on)
10.  The Transgender girl  (I forget her name but her plot regarding her son is pretty interesting.  And shes cool)

I hate soso.  Literally loathe her.  I hate people that are like her in real life.  I loathe most of the Diaz Family for their actions.  And I hate Alex Vause with every viber of my being and hope she gets beat with a lock sock soon.  :)

It really is a great show.  I love it and purchased the funko pops of the characters.

I'm currently re-watching Family Matters on Hulu starting from Season 1.

I haven't seen this show since the 90s and it brings back a lot of nostalgia for me.

I finished season 6 of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.  Easily the weakest season since the first.  I still generally enjoy the characters, but the endgame this season wasn’t particularly interesting.

Binged through Glow Season 3 yesterday and overall I thought it was alright.  I felt like the wrestling part took a backseat to all the other story stuff going on, more than usual, which I think is by design.  Setting it in Vegas as a nightly show that doesn't really change much, so you can't show tons of the same things happening, meaning more time spent on all the relationship drama and other things.  The different story lines going on are generally good, though feel a tad drawn out at times and found myself kinda skipping through some bits as I basically got the gist of it pretty quick.  Some of the storylines didn't get a very good resolution though, they just felt skimmed over, which kinda sucks, but I think we'll see more come of it with the next season.

The show ended in a pretty good spot though, so I think Season 4 could be pretty great.

I saw it when it launched and it's pretty good.  Not quite as crazy as I thought it was gonna be, but still worked pretty well.

Also began watching The Wire.  One of those shows I've heard about for years as top tier television.  Now it's kind of an interesting time capsule...Set after 9/11, during a time where computers weren't completely widespread, pagers existed, not everyone has a cellphone.  That right there makes this an interesting watch for me.  The show itself? Alright so far lol Still early, so waiting for it to really take off.

The Wire never really “takes off”.  It’s a slow build that is constantly adding new layers and complications while simultaneously exploring both sides of the law.  It’s engaging and intriguing, but it’s also a realistic look into that kind of life, so don’t expect set pieces or anything like that.

I just watched I Think You Should Leave on Netflix.  It’s a an utterly bizarre and surreal sketch show that is also incredibly funny.

Oh that's fine if it's more like that, I meant "taking off" more in way of the story really settling in, as the first couple episodes so far feel more about just working me into the setting, but it's starting to hit that point 3 or 4 episodes in now.  I'm fine with it not having any big crazy set pieces like a Breaking Bad would as a more realistic take on things can still be engaging.

I just finished Seasons 1-3 of King of the Hill last night.  This is a show that has aged remarkably well, but I believe I’m about to start getting into the era where I didn’t really watch it anymore.  I figured this would be a good spot for small break since there are still around 200 episodes to go.

Season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale.  Pretty inconsistent, but it finished extremely strong.  There’s finally some major catharsis at work after 3 seasons of misery.

Got through Season 1 and Season 2 of The Wire.  Season 2 wasn't as good to me.  Felt disjointed dealing with so many different storylines going on, not nearly as tight as Season 1.  The show is still pretty consistent though, so I'm hoping Season 3 can pull it back in, though taking a break from this to go watch The Walking Dead now that Season 9 is up on Netflix.

Season 2 is kind of considered the odd-man-out.  I don't think its the worst season, but it is a bit tonally and structurally different that all of the others, because of just how much it shifts the storytelling focus.  Each season expands the scope of the show in some way, but Season 2 probably does it the least organically.

Yeah there's just way too many separate stories going on and the stuff with Stringer and West Baltimore gangs were unnecessary to the stuff going on with the docks, though I know they had to have it there to keep that story going till Season 3 when they are back on that stuff.

I also started into the new Dark Crystal TV show, just the first episode, and it's really well done.  The mixture of CG and puppetry looks really good, giving it all a bigger scope.  Lots of good actors in it too, though outright I only recognized Mark Hamill and Sigourney Weaver.  Should be a real nice watch.

I just finished Episode 4 of Dark Crystal.  It’s incredible.

After re-watching the original movie a month or so ago, I was worried the the CG would overpower the puppets and actual sets too much, but it all blends so well, with CG being best for grander shots, and puppets and good sets up close.  The only thing I'd say was a little overdone with CG was that the Skeksis have CG tongues when they talk and it mildly distracting, because they don't all have wiggling tongues in every shot that the Skeksis talk, so I have to wonder why they even spent the money on doing that.  Other than that, I can't wait to continue the series.

Got through Walking Dead Season 9 and while the first half was fairly boring, the second half was generally better.  A change in the story helped to make things fresher, bring in a new dynamic, though it's still not reaching the best stuff of the earlier seasons.  Pretty standard stuff for TWD.  All it makes me want to do is read the comics, which I might do eventually.  I believe the tv show is still using the comics story points, but there's big character differences between them and the comic has always been way more intense.

Finished it last night.  I can't believe the show ended up being this good.  I wasn't the biggest fan of the original (it's a technical marvel while being only an OK movie, at best).  This series takes all the best things about the movie and makes them better while also telling an amazing original story.  Cannot recommend it enough.

Just finished the Lizzie Borden took an Axe movie and the following season that chronicles the aftermath "Lizzie Borden Chronicles" on netflix.   Since I live in the city it took place, it was pretty neat to see :).   I think the movie was very much so better than the series but they are sorta intertwined.  Very good views although their were quite a few historical inaccuracies.  They made lizzie pretty hot which was funny and it clearly had a bias to how the events took place in the mind of the director.  Which was cool.

I love the wonderful scenery and how they really brought it back into that era.  The series didn't take place in Fall River but it did it's best to capture the vibe which was cool.  Great performances.

I also have started binging Ink Master on YouTube.  I don't have cable which sucks and it's not on netflix so I have to just watch highlights :(.   But boy is that show addictive and fun.  I don't even have any tattoos nor am I an artist but I still love it :).

Do you think I will like Walking Dead?  I was actually spoiled to it pretty early on by one of the characters dying but now i've come to realize every single character dies so it's not much of a spoiler if I watch from the beggining lol.

I love the telltale game series. I heard they are similar.  I think they are both inspired from the comics right?

If you liked the Telltale games for their story, that's basically what the show is.  The show is based on the comics story wise, but the games are kinda emulating the comics look a little bit, but are an original story in that setting.

Charged ahead with KotH S6, which was extremely strong.  The first two episodes are filled with two classic moments; “That’s my purse!  I don’t know you!” and “Pocket sand!” respectively.

Took a break and binged Preacher S3 over the last two days.  It’s never been the best, and is often inconsistent, but it’s entertaining as hell.

This week I watched the Netflix mini-series Godless.  It's a good Western, but not quite what the marketing would have you believe.  It's a rather traditional Western that happens to include a town of women, it is not a Western about a town full of women.

Disenchantment Part 2 is definitely better than Part 1, but it still feels like it is missing something to really make it good.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse is easily my least favorite season of the show.  I've got a couple of episodes left, but I find myself quite bored by it.

Binged through the last season and a half of Gotham and finished it.  I was real off and on with the show, I think like the first half is a real mixed bag, but it got better for sure in the latter half and the last season in general was the best I think.  The show did enough to put it over the rest of the general super hero type shows I think, primarily the CW ones as it would get abit bloodier and nastier at times, though it's hilarious how often people are brutally shot or seemingly killed just for them to go "Oh, they totally survived or are in a coma".  It's kinda common in the comics, but not something you see in a show as often I feel and it comes off pretty silly.  Oh and the amount of times characters teamed up, just to betray each other might be in like the dozens? It's kinda ridiculous, especially towards the end lol

Overall I liked the show though.

Had a real good watch with Carnival Row.  I love the setting, mixing what is generally a sort of 1700's/1800's, Industrial Era, London, with that of a fantasy backdrop.  It's not based in any actual setting, a very different world, but because of that, it gets away from the faults you might see, like with that shit Netflix movie Bright.  As a general fantasy setting, it is pretty well done, kinda Fantastic Beasts crossed with Game of Thrones, but magic is fairly minimal in the story, so kinda leans in that way that you see with GoT.

Characters are all real good, I was actually genuinely interested to more know of the lore, more about the war that happened, the other side of the conflict that actually won it, but it seems to not be based on any book unfortunately.  Turns out the co-creator that wrote it also wrote the screenplay for Pacific Rim, which I love too.

I do recommend it if you want something with a taste of fantasy to it.

*EDIT*
Man, it's only been a few days since I finished the series, but I still want more.  That's a sign of a good series I feel, because I just wish this was based on a book so I could go read more and I don't usually read a lot of books (Last read Game of Thrones a few years back).  Got me into a fantasy mood and thought about rewatching Lord of the Rings, which also has Orlando Bloom in it lol

Well here's one the best western cartoons I think I've watched in awhile.  It's only 5 episodes so far, not sure if that's the whole season or if they plan for more, the last episode definitely isn't an end, more of a middle of the story type of feel, but it's so good.  Genndy Tatakovsky once again just makes really engaging animation.  I love that he's doing darker, bloodier, stuff now after the final season for Samurai Jack, and he goes all out here.  Dinosaurs, Ape-Men, Mammoths, all just getting ripped and battered.  There is no dialogue at all at any point, there's no setup for this intense, primal, fantasy world, you are just brought in and you are along for the ride, but they do a lot to characterize Spear and Fang, the sound design and music they do use really draws you in, so it's well designed.

I highly recommend it if you want just a damn good show.

Finished season 2 of worlds fastest car.  It's a very fun show to binge.  The episodes go by so fast because they are just exciting to view.   They pin 3 home built cars,  like rat rods, civics,  junk cars,  and project cars against a rich person in a supercar and see who wins.

The winners go on to a finale to race in a head to head.

I hope anyone who loves cars will give it a shot.  It's really fun.  and funny at times.

That Batman reveal was god-awful, though.

I watched the first 6 episode of Season 4 of The Good Place because they were about to start taking them off On Demand and I couldn't wait.  It's still easily one of the most creative and funny shows on TV.  I'll be sad to see it go.

Also almost finished with the Netflix series Tuca & Birdie.  It's utterly freaking bizarre.  It's hilarious, but often goes off in totally unexpected directions.

It's definitely a trip! I'm patiently waiting for the last season to hit streaming so I can see how it all end.

With October over I have switched back over to my total watch / rewatch of King of the Hill.  It is amazing how it feels both timeless and stuck in the 90s.

Finally got around to Good Omens, which has a cast that I love, but I ended up feeling the same about the show that I did about the novel - it's good but something about it just doesn't grab me the way I feel like the content should.

So, I watched the first season of Adventures of the Gummi Bears on Disney+.  It's definitely a cartoon from the 80s.  Not great, not terrible, just some decent fluff to have on in the background.  I plan on making my way through a fair chunk of the classic Disney Afternoon stuff on the new service, so I figured I would start at the beginning.  I've got much higher hopes for stuff like Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck.

I also watched the first episode of The Mandalorian, which hit pretty much all the buttons I was hoping.  It's so nice to really get to see the underside of the SW Universe.  Plus, Life Day is now canon!

Also, King of the Hill, Season 8.  Still good, but I'm kind of starting to hate Peggy.

Coming off what Star Wars has been for the last several years, I wasn't as much excited about The Mandalorian as I was curious. As far as Star Wars has fallen I still have hope that it'll become great again, or at least be passable entertainment, which is exactly what The Mandalorian is.

The first episode of The Mandalorian was pretty good overall, although it by no means was great on the level of the prequels or especially the OT. I guess the best direct comparison would be between this and Rogue One; the look and feel of this was very Rogue One, as was the more gritty, underbelly of Star Wars feel that it had. This show definitely was interesting based on the fact that it didn't have anything directly to do with the events of the original trilogy or the sequel trilogy, which was very refreshing imo. I want to see more Star Wars that isn't trying to succeed on the coattails of the original or prequel trilogy, but instead does its own thing set in the Star Wars universe.

The production quality of the show was pretty good and a lot of practical effects were used which made it feel very authentic. There were parts that felt cheap or like I was watching someone's fan movie, but overall the show looked great as did the alien costumes and sets. We are introduced to several characters, but unfortunately the main character has felt fairly undeveloped. However I won't criticize this too much since it's only the first episode. As for what happened in the first episode, there is a somewhat strange tonal shift at one point in the episode that was a bit off, but it did little to distract from the overall good quality of the episode. The climax and final scene of episode 1 were the best part and the ending definitely left you on a cliffhanger that makes me want to watch the next episode. One other thing I wanted to mention about the ending is the best depiction of an IG droid in all of Star Wars, which was totally bad ass!

While it wasn't riveting by any means, The Mandalorian's first episode was a breath of fresh air for the franchise. It was cool, well made, entertaining, but most of all it felt like Star Wars. Particularly this felt like if someone adapted an EU novel or comic into a high budget TV show or movie, which is something I wish Disney would have done instead of scrapping the old Legends EU. I will be watching the next episode and likely the whole first season. I really hope that Disney doesn't drop the ball on this show or ruin it in some way. I'd like to be optimistic, but this is the same Disney and Lucasfilm that brought us TLJ and Solo. We'll see I guess.

Yeah Gummi Bears was never one of my favorites from back in the day, just a casual bit of entertainment, but a lot of the other stuff I loved from the Disney Afternoon like Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, Tailspin, Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales.  I actually plan to check out the new Duck Tales since I saw that was on the service and I've heard there were some good episodes and they've been bringing in characters from other shows like Darkwing Duck into it.

Watched The Mandalorian too and really enjoyed it.  It's the kind of story stuff I've wanted to see from Star Wars done in show form, where it is a more stripped down story dealing with a side of that universe that we don't usually see, something we would've got with the canceled 1313 game, so it's nice that we are sorta getting that here in a different way.  Just one episode to go on, so I can't say too much on it, but the effects and action is good and I'm curious to see where they take it.

I just started watching Rick and Morty after some friend's recommendation a couple of weeks ago and I am two episodes away from finishing the third season. It's the first animated series I've watched in, like, a decade or so and I'm finding it to be pretty entertaining!

Definitely recommended even for people who, like me, may have some bias against cartoons in general...

Watched Episode 2 and while I'm not going to do a full review I will say that it was very, very good! Even better than episode 1. I'd give it an 8/10 overall.

I'm going to hold off reviewing anymore of this show until season 1 has concluded and then I'll give my full thoughts on it overall.

King of the Hill seasons 9-10.  This is definitely where the show starts to get a little shakier.  Still plenty of good episodes, but the number of duds is just a lip bit higher, with ones like Enrique-cilible Differences and Hank’s Bully.  Both are ok in a vacuum, but compared to the rest of the series are aggressive “meh”.

Hello everyone!   Just made it back from strangercon 2019 in Dallas, TX.   :D   A convention tributing the cult icon Stranger Things!    My all time favorite netflix show.

I must say, it was the absolute best weekend of my entire life,  so much so to the point that my actual life following it has felt completely void of fun and actually depressing in contrast.  Which is something i'm trying hard to fix before I spiral into depression.   Mostly coping by saving up for the next lol.

But I will say,  the atmosphere was electric.   The convention staff were incredible.   And Millie Bobby Brown and Caleb McLaughlin who play Eleven and Lucas on the show were both extremely nice and wonderful people.  I got to meet both and got a few of my pops signed by them :D

Millie is extremely talented.  and did some voice impressions at the Q+A which was awesome.  Spoilers were made by Millie but I won't share those here in case people don't want to know :)

Hope everyone has a very happy holidays.  :D

Sounds like you had a terrific trip!
I picked-up Stranger Things and Stranger Things 2 on Blu-Ray recently. I have watched every episode I own except the last episode of Stranger Things 2. Maybe I will get to watch it tonight. I think the show is very well done, and I hope to get the next season soon. Its the best Sci-Fi show I have seen in years.

Earlier this year I watched The Expanse.  It was amazing.  Then a few weeks ago I read the first novel the show is based on.  Then Amazon announced the premiere date for Season 4 (December 13).

Last week, the GF and I decided, sure, why not, lets watch it again before the new comes on - but let's not go nuts.  We don't have to speed through it.  We are already halfway through Season 2.

This show is so good, ya'll.  It's pretty handily the best hard sci-fi show that has ever existed.

I said I wasn't going to say anything else about this show until the season was over, but I absolutely cannot contain how happy and impressed I was with the last episode! Wow! For the first time since The Force Awakens came out I actually felt like I was watching Star Wars again. Full disclosure, there is one particular scene towards the end that actually put tears in my eyes; I was just so happy to be watching something again that resembled and felt like Star Wars.

Of course we aren't even halfway through the series so there is still a lot of room for things to go south, but right now The Mandalorian has just got better and better with each episode. I have to give episode 3 a solid 10/10. Wow!

The Mandalorian: episode 4: 5/10

This was definitely the weakest episode so far, mostly because it felt kind of a like a filler episode, which this show should not have considering it's only 8 episodes and they're only about a half hour each. A new character called Cara Dune was introduced and she is a breath of fresh air as an actually well written character in Disney Star Wars. She is also a total badass while also being relatable. There is also a pretty cool scene towards the end of the episode, but overall this one was a bit on the mundane and boring side.

The ending battle of episode 3 in The Mandalorian made me so happy.  I've always wanted to see Mandalorians kicking ass in live action and we finally got it.  I was originally a fan of Boba Fett as a kid, even if he doesn't actually do anything, it was a style thing (They did him so wrong...same for Phasma in the new movies.  A character that could be so good that they waste, but still looks cool), and he was always more interesting outside the movies in books and other media, so I've always wanted to see more done with them.  It's really reinvigorating my Mandalorian love and now I'm like "I gotta get me some Mandalorian toys" lol

Episode 4 has only extra confirmed that Baby Yoda is precious and embodies all that is good in this world.  As for the episode, it's totally fine.  A slower episode makes sense after the last one and I like the chill world building it does and it's still a good episode.  I always love a classic "Help the villagers fight the threat" setup, though I wish they had explored why the raiders had an AT-ST.  They bring it up and then just sorta drop it.  Might not be important to the story, but it's just an interesting bit of lore to know.  Still really enjoying The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian is just Lone Wolf and Cub in the Star Wars universe and I am so here for it.  The only real weakness of Chapter 4 is that the story is such a traditional archetype.

I also watched all the episodes of The World According to Jeff Goldblum which is fun.

Also rewatched most of Season Two of Parks and Recreation because it was what the gf’s family decided to put on TV while I’m still out of town.

Chapter 5 of The Mandalorian was another light episode like the last one, but the setting is cool for this one due to the nostalgia. Wish they had done more with it, but again I thought it was fine like 4 was and definitely still fitting that classic western theme.  Hopefully the last episodes of the season are just going all out.

The Mandalorian: Episode 5

This unfortunately felt like another filler episode where very little that happened moved the plot forward in any meaningful way. In a show that's 20+ episodes filler episodes are par for the course, but this being only an 8 episode season, with each episode only being around half an hour is almost inexcusable. Regardless episode 5 was still pretty entertaining and was filled with a ton of prequel and OT references that I absolutely loved. This was definitely the most fan service rich episode so far. Aside from that the action was entertaining, what went down was pretty cool, and without spoiling anything the last scene has me very excited as to who might show up later on in the show. Not a bad episode, but certainly not one of the better ones so far either.

I personally don't think the tease at the end is anyone we know, as I know people were getting abit worked up about that on twitter last night, but I think it's gonna just be the new character played by Giancarlo Esposito (Gus from Breaking Bad) who basically fits the tease of armor with a cape.  Not to say I wouldn't die if the tease was someone else, because it would be the best with who people thought it might be, but I'm not getting my hopes up.  At least not with Season 1 lol

Episode 5 was pretty easily my least favorite so far.  The guy playing gunslinger wasn’t very interesting, and it pretty much completely wasted Ming-Na.  Some decent fan service bits, but overall kind of weak.

I’m also expecting Giancarlo’s character to be the payoff.

With my recent Star Wars kick, I've been watching Star Wars: Rebels while I do bead art.  Never watched it before, but I'm through the first season and starting into season 2 and it's not bad.  It hasn't really won me over, I think it's just alright, but it has some good moments and just the general Star Wars aspect is good.  I know some of the stuff that happens coming up, so I'm hoping things take a step up in the second season and into season 3 as there looks to be a time skip.  Definitely looking forward to some more backstory on Sabine the Mandalorian girl.  I dig her design.

Ended up accidentally binging the first season of Bosch over on Amazon.  Kinda heard about the show through some off the cuff remark about how the cop in the show basically bought himself a super fancy house selling the rights to one of his cases, something that makes a lot of sense if you think about it (Like what if John McClane sold the rights to the story of Die Hard 1 and got rich off that? lol) and turns out its a real solid cop drama.  I'd say it's on the side of the more realistic cop dramas, not full on The Wire where they show every bit of procedure and such, but it keeps more to that side than say...an NCIS or Bones.  The Wire connection comes back with Lance Reddick also being in this show, but in a much smaller, though slightly similar role.

I also like that it's basically focused on Bosch, the main character of the show.  A problem I found with The Wire was that there were like a dozen different stories happening at once and it felt kinda stretched thin and was probably one of the reasons I sorta fell off the show, because for every good story they would tell, there would be two others I just didn't feel interested in.  And there's 5 seasons out with a 6th on the way, so this could be something I keep up with.  I like the lead quite abit and the show is fairly well done.  I'd recommend it if you are wanting to check out a newer solid cop drama.

The Mandalorian: Episode 6 - 4/10

I'll first say I'm kind of pissed and fairly disappointed that half the episodes so far are pointless filler episodes that do very little to nothing at all to drive the main story forward, or contribute to the overall story arch in any meaningful way. This is starting to feel like a show that doesn't know if it wants to be a show like GoT where every episode and everything that happens is relevant to the main story in some way, or if it wants to be freakin DBZ where the majority of the episodes are pointless filler. What makes this worse is that the episodes aren't very long and there is only eight of them this season. This really irritates me, and episode 6 is exactly that, another filler episode, albeit a cool one.

I'm not going to spoil the story, but essentially the episode is about a prison break with a lot of action. It's too bad that the background story to all that action is kinda mundane, and the crew Mando must work with are by far the most cartoonish, cringy group of characters in the show so far. I thought the person they were going to break out might be of some significance in some way, but he is probably the most unremarkable character of the whole episode. On top of that, there is a "twist" towards the end that you can see coming from literally the first 5-minutes of the episode and did not surprise me at all.

As I said, the action was good and there were some genuinely tense moments, but overall this episode was completely unnecessary and does not server the main story one bit. This has been my least favorite episode thus far, and I sincerely hope with only two episodes left that this show really, really picks up because it's becoming as unremarkable as Disney's Star Wars movies.

I still like these episodes, they are well done and this one had a pretty fun cast of recognizable people, but yeah, it's just another filler.  That's not the best in an already very short season.  Hopefully the last two episodes are going all out to finish up the season.

I did like the people that showed up, as I was surprised to see the dude from Sons of Anarchy, Bill Burr, and best of all, Clancy Brown, who gets to be another character in the Star Wars universe as he was also a character in Star Wars Rebels.

See, I like the fact that we are getting mostly stand alone stories with some minor tie-in to the overall arc.  It reminds of the old Tales books, or a comic run.  Not everything needs to be design as "a 8-hour movie" (or 4-5 as the case may be) that streaming services seem to have forced upon us.  The episodic structure makes more sense for a show that is releasing weekly instead of dropping for a binge session.

Speaking of binge sessions: season 4 of The Expanse came out a day early, so I watched 2 on Thursday and the remainder yesterday.  I think it was a slight step down from the previous two seasons, and roughly on par with the first.  From what I understand of the source material, this was kind of expected, as the fourth book in the series is generally considered the weakest, and mostly set-up for things to come.  It's still really, really good, and the new Amazon budget really shines with the specials effects this year.

That is the point though for low episode seasons.  It's meant to be a more focused, story driven, experience, without a lot of filler or dragged out story beats.  They can do a more tightly told show, while also maximizing the quality, rather than needing to stretch the budget across a lot more episodes.  I like these episodes, they are good, but when there's only 2 episodes left and nothing has progressed in the main story after 3 episodes, it doesn't feel right.

Well, it's not doing that, so one could argue that it is not what it's meant to be.  It's simply not what you expected.  Look at the first seasons of Always Sunny and Archer, a huge portion of BBC shows, all of the USA Network procedurals.  8-13 episodes a season, almost all standalone, with barely a thread to string them together - though occasionally you'd get a minor one.  You shouldn't judge a show for what you were expecting, judge it on what it actually is.

a Harlod and Kumar Christmas- I totally forgot this movie existed until I saw the blu-ray for cheap and bought it. Then I had completely forgotten that this movie came out when 3D was the biggest thing in movies. You can easily tell what were the big 3D scenes in the movie and honestly watching it in 2D... those scenes don't look the best. Overall it's a good Stoner comedy about Christmas, reuniting  with old friends, and sticking up for yourself against your father in law... even if he is Danny Trejo. Also Neil Patrick Harris' part is the best

It wasn't really about expectations, it was about how they setup the show.  3 episodes dealing with the main story, and then it was 3 random episodes that do slightly delve into the Mando's backstory, but dropped the previously setup narrative entirely, and now we only have 2 episodes (hopefully both deal with it) left to get back to the main story before the season ends.  Certainly not expecting it to be wrapped up by the end, but structurally it was how they were setting up show before we got these middles episodes.

They weren't really that connected though - at least not all of them (Episode 3 definitely was).  Episode 2 is just about Mando dinking around with Jawas and repairing his ship.  The only semi-big overarcing development was The Child using the Force, and lets be honest, everyone saw that coming.  That's about the same amount of long-term development as Episode 4, where we get confirmation the FOB is still for The Child, not Mando, and that they can't stay in one place - a generally more important storytelling revelation than the Force use.  Even as a standalone Episode 6 gives us a fair amount of history on Mando - he was not always as chivalrous as we see him now - and he was definitely getting busy with the Twi'lek.

Episode 1 is debatable, since its the Pilot episode.  Yes, it is the job that sets everything in motion, but if you change the quarry at the end from The Child to literally anything else the episode remains the same, and has no long reaching effects.  It's only in those last moments that it actually becomes important to the serialized story that is being told.  Like I said before, it's Lone Wolf and Cub - just continuing adventures of this baby and surrogate father, with occasional links back to who and what they are.

It's reminding me a lot of The X-Files revival seasons.  The premiere and finale were mythology heavy (and pretty awful because of it - hopefully not the case here), and in the middle we get a bunch decent-to-good stand alone stories.

Also, I watched Unbelievable on Netflix.  It’s really good, but also very difficult to watch.

Got through two more seasons of Bosch.  I really dig the show, just a solid bit of cop drama.  I think I like it, because it's generally pretty chill, like there's big drama and some action moments, but it never gets too crazy or feels unrealistic.  Just a well paced story from beginning to end and all the actors are pretty likable.  Gonna take a break from the series to focus on some other stuff.  The Expanse has a new season, Witcher is out in 3 days, and I got anime to catch up on.  Sorta ended up with a glut of things to watch lol

And Chapter 7 is back on track in The Mandalorian.  I'm hoping the finale is abit of a longer one to deal with the end of the season, but it's a good setup here for sure.  Sucks we have to wait longer than a week for the last episode lol

The Mandalorian: Episode 7 - 8/10

I'm SO happy this show is getting back to the main story, and what an episode it was! Definitely some of the coolest action we've seen so far! The ending of this episode has me totally hyped for the final episode and I can't wait to see how everything that got setup in this episode plays out.

I binged both The Righteous Gemstones and Watchmen over the last week, and they are both incredible in vastly different ways.

Finished the new season of The Expanse and it's solid stuff.  It's great that it was given a second chance at life as the story for everything keeps being interesting.  Though it's funny to see that with them off TV and on Amazon, they can do a few things they can't on TV, which basically amounts to people just saying the "fuck" a whole lot, almost comically so at a point with the UN councillor woman lol

I do recommend the series if you haven't started, though the first...I think 5 episodes of the first season are weirdly rough, I actually stopped watching around then the first time before giving the series another shot, but once you get past that, its all good.

*EDIT*
Haven't been sleeping great, so binged another season of Bosch.  I will say that binging these probably aren't the best, because while it stays consistent, it also doesn't have a lot of big highs, so it sorta runs together at times.  Not bad at all, because it does keep being interesting and this season has a surprise or two, and while I am gonna watch Season 5, I am sorta hoping it takes things up another notch.

Finished the first season of The Sinner .  Good, but way more melodramatic than I expected.  Second season seems a little better so far.

Season two was a hair better than the first, mostly due to cast and location changes.  Plus no idiot husband making the world’s worst decisions.

I watched all of the final season of Silicon Valley today.  There were some good laugh-out-loud moments, but it is a show that definitely lost its momentum and focus a couple of years ago.

Chapter 8 of The Mandalorian was a great end to this first season and I'm hoping they can continue to deliver on what is quickly becoming one of my favorite pieces of Star Wars media at least in terms of shows and movies.  On a smaller note for the show, I love seeing more good stuff with the Imperials, like we get to see a Death Trooper go hand to hand with Mando and we get this goofy little sit down with two Scout Troopers, and the ending I had to look up what it meant, but it actually involves something that showed up in the Clone Wars and Rebels cartoon, so I'm definitely finishing up Rebels and then going to check out the Clone Wars cartoon.

Great show, can't wait for Season 2.

The Mandalorian - episode 8: 9/10

This was an amazing finale to a show that really surprised me by its overall quality. Episode 8 was an excellent, action packed episodes that left season 1 on a satisfying note, while at the same time making want season 2 badly. Without spoiling anything, I thought the end was amazing and Mando as a protagonist is becoming one of my favorites, especially when stacked up against all original characters created since Disney took over.

As for the series as a whole, I'd give it a 7/10; to give some context to this score this is where I'd rate Phantom Menace and A New Hope as well. This is the best piece of new Star Wars we've got since Disney bought Lucasfilm, and is better than all the films. The closest anything has come so far is Rogue One, but The Mandalorian has the edge over it for having far better characters and overall a more interesting, well written story. Where The Mandalorian season 1 loses points is the 3 episodes in a row of filler episodes that contributed little to nothing to the overall plot; I feel like these episodes could be skipped entirely if you wanted and continuing from episode 3 to episode 7 would be nearly seamless. However, these filler episodes were not bad, and while it wasn't necessarily my cup of tea, I can appreciate why a lot of people really enjoyed episode 6. However, if I was just judging episodes 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8, this show would be a solid 8/10, but unfortunately I have to take the bad with the good when judging it.

I will absolutely be buying this series on bluray when it gets the inevitable release on it, and I will be anticipating season 2 highly. Well done Disney, and for the record this is how you do good Star Wars.

Finally got around to finishing The Witcher and I think it's a pretty alright show.  Good fantasy movies/shows are honestly kinda rare even nowadays, stuff like this, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, etc, so I'm always looking for more that I think are entertaining (Need to get back to the Dark Crystal show).  I think the show overall is good, but it's a messy good.  I think it drags abit, though thankfully it's only 8 episodes, and it has an obnoxious timeline.  You don't notice there's one until a certain point and then it's bouncing between multiple points of time and I don't think it did itself any favors with it.

Effects are mostly good, there's a point at the start where it feels a little sketchy and you worry that it won't be consistently well done, but I think it does well for the majority of the show.  I heard someone say that it gets to like "CW Super Hero" show level and that's not even slightly true.  You definitely won't have to worry about Supergirl tier CG here lol  Cavill also nails Geralt I think too, like I wasn't sure how they were gonna play him, but if you know him from the games, he's exactly that.

I've never been a Witcher fan, my only connection is Witcher 3 that I beat, and even then I wasn't in love with the game because the combat was a little iffy, so as someone just wanting a sword and magic based show, I enjoyed my time with the Witcher and I'm pretty interested in the second season as a better focused and paced story will do wonders for the show.

I'm actually gonna go and try and give the Witcher 3 a new shot after all this time, see if my views on the game has changed.  I even grabbed a mod that changed Geralt to the Cavill version pretty well to mix things up lol

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 was alright.  I didn't care for the season long plotline about her parents, but Midge and Joel's stories were pretty good.  It was also nice to see Sterling K. Brown show up.  He's great in everything.

The Witcher was entertaining, but something about it felt off the entire time.  It simultaneously felt very expensive while also feeling really cheap in some places.  The performances were good, but took some getting used to.  Messy good is the perfect way to describe it.

I think them not having a distinct timeline of events, jumping back and forth between not just different stories, but different points of time while doing different stories, it made it hard to follow things.  Especially when they are talking about decades of time, but almost no one looks different aside from that one court mage that's friends with Geralt.  I think the second season can fix that, bring a focus to the show that it desperately needed.

The biggest issue with the timeline was as you pointed out, it wasn't clear they were doing different timelines until Episode Four, and then they didn't do a lot to make it explicit.  It wasn't played up as a twist or big deal, it just happened and was pretty confusing - and I had already heard there were timeline shenanigans in the show.  I agree that it looks like Season Two will have more focus there.

Watched all of The Boys Season One yesterday.  That was a fun and mean little show.  Can't wait for Season Two.

King of the Hill S11-12.  You can definitely feel the show running out of steam, but it’s not really bad.  There are still some really great jokes sprinkled throughout.

Finished season 5 of Bosch, the last of the available seasons.  I still think it's a solid enough cop drama, but it's also not really doing anything particularly new or different at this point.  I'm probably done with the show as I think it needs a new swerve to keep me going, so unless I hear something good about the new season, I won't be continuing.

Since I needed something else to dive into, I thought I'd give Vikings another shot as I saw it was still going.  I think I only watched Season 1 in the past, but just never continued on for whatever reason, so starting over and gonna see how far I go.  Got kinda in the mood for Norseman related stuff after playing Hellblade the other night and after Bosch, I could use something with a little more action going on to it.

This also reminds me that I'm super behind on Vinland Saga...hrmm...I might catch up on Vinland now that I think about it as I want to catch up on my anime if I can.

And binged through Vinland Saga, catching up to it as I had stopped a little over half way through and it's great.  It wasn't till the end that the title of it was "End of Prologue" that this was all a prologue and the main story actually dealing with "Vinland" is coming up lol It's a great anime with a good story.

Also ended up watching all of Infinity Train, a cartoon network show and it's pretty good.  Comes across a little like the wackiness you'd get with Adventure Time, but with more of an actual ongoing story like with Steven Universe.  I dug the humor and characters and the story works pretty well.

The long great trek is over.  All 13 seasons complete.  What a good consistent run.  Even in the last 4-5 episodes there were quotes that have become memes.  That's an enduring legacy.

Also finished Adventures of the Gummi Bears season 2.  It's just a kids cartoon, but my dumb completionist brain won't let it go.

Preacher S4 came to Hulu much faster than I was expecting.  It was never a truly great show, but it was always entertaining.  The last couple of episodes are as good as the show ever was, but I do think it was time for it to end.
